I am greedy, and you are everything beautiful. The wind rattled the tent, presaging storms, but inside they were warm, so wound together. Invulnerable to rain. This post canon Valinor fic has everything. Aredhel being a flawed badass. Nolofinwean drama. Complex mother-daughter relationships. Come for female-focused Silm Fics, stay for Aredhel breaking Valinor while dealing with her family. Cannot recommend enough.

A Boy, A Girl, And a Dog: The Leithian Script posted to Ao3 by GammaCavy (originally by Philosopher At Large) - L��thien/Beren, 593k, rated G (complete)

A retelling of the Lúthien and Beren in script form based vaguely on Ol’ Will Shakes. I rarely read true canon compliant works, but this is worth every heart wrenching second. It’s funny, poignant, and deserves to be produced as an actual production. I would pay money to see it.

THIS. This is The Silm Fix-It. Begins with A Thread Unraveled, a Nirnaeth Arnoediad Ground-Hog day style fix-it centered on Maedhros, then expands. The author does a great job with the politics and the fallout of the Nirnaeth being a success and how that changes the rest of the events of the Silm. I especially love her characterizations of Melian, Finduilas, Turgon, and all the Brothers Fëanor.

The Last Spring by clothonono on ao3 - Finwëan fam + background Fingon/Maedhros, 26.2k, rated G (complete)

This right here is how I imagine the Family Finwë pre-canon. Fëanor brings his children to visit Tirion for the first time. The tension between the children of Finwë is delicious. The characterization of Fëanor is delicious. The foreboding ending, also delicious. This could be an entire six course meal if it was edible. Also baby Galadriel is amazing and terrifying.

As a Star Upon a Hill by @mynameisjessejk - Lúthien/Beren & Fingon/Maedhros, 11.9k, rated T (complete)

A fix-it au where Celegorm and Curufin decide to not be assholes, Beren and Lúthien steal all three Silmarils, and everyone agrees that dads kinda suck. Borderline crack, but such a feel good fic ugh it makes me happy.

Light Touched by whovianhiddlestoner on ao3 - kidnap + peredhel fams, 48.9k, rated T (complete)

Another (relatively) lighthearted fic where everyone who touches the Silmarils get to be Eldritch and Elrond has a lot of family reunions. Mainly set in the third age, ending in Valinor. Beautiful language all around, and also Maedhros’ hair is on fire. Which is awesome.

The Iron Ring by lulumiche on ao3 - Glorfindel/Maeglin, 39.2k, rated M (ongoing)

Post-canon in Valinor. Maeglin was actually in love with Glorfindel, which no one but Idril knows. Come for the discussions of homophobie in elf society, stay for some of the realest feeling characterizations I have ever read. Seriously, I don’t really like Maglor as Lindir but I ate it up here. Also lots of interesting magic.

The Silver Rule by SpaceWall on ao3 - Celebrían/Elrond/Gil-galad, 70.4k, rated T (complete)

More post-canon Valinor shenanigans. This time, Celebrían argues law, makes friends, and wants her husband back. I love breaking Valinor, and I especially love when Tolkien women do it. And let’s be honest, the Statute of Finwë and Míriel is utter balogney.

I Do; I Will by @littlewhitemouseagain - Fingon/Maedhros, 22.8k, rated M (complete)

The one in which everyone is on their worst behavior and the sons of Fëanor challenge Fingon to duels over his crown. I cannot emphasize enough how this is The Fingon Fic. His flaws are exposed and addressed in such a way that I’ve never seen before. The insights into the Fëanorians, especially Mae, are also really super poignant. This deserves so much attention.

Across The Table by Tuginda on ao3 - Gimli/Legolas & Glorfindel/Erestor, 9.5k, rated G (complete)

A conversation between two couples at Aragorn and Arwen’s wedding. Beautiful, sweet, and containing one of my favorite things: crotchety old Fëanorian Erestor. Somehow feels like both a conversation about dwarves and elves, and a lovely tribute to the Noldor.

Five Series/Multi-Chapter Fics

1. By Treason of Kin Unto Kin by @amethysttribble

This epic Silm/aSoIaF crossover is the third part of Tribble's Everlasting Song series. It's gripping, fantastically written and very carefully thought out. You won't regret checking out how the sons of Feanor, reborn in Westerosi noble families, navigate the aSoIaF world.

2. The Valiant by whyyesindeed

Reborn Fingon returns to Beleriand to find his husband just before the Third Kinslaying in this beautiful and touching fic. It has a sequel too, which I haven't read yet, but I'm sure it's just as well-written as the first part.

3. Celechwes Fixes the Noldor by @tanoraqui

To my shame, I haven't finished this fic yet, but I can't recommend it enough. Celechwes - who marries both Fingon and Maedhros - is a delightful protagonist, the story flows so smoothly and is so much fun to read, while also being very moving.

4. The Seven Trials of Fingon the Valiant by @melestasflight and @polutrope

All seven sons of Feanor court Fingon in this hilarious, brilliant and inspiring fic. I had so much fun reading it, and if you haven't yet, please do yourselves a favor.

5. For We Walk by Faith, Not by Sight by an_evasive_author

This fic began in 2019 and continues to this day, and I still love it like before. Post-Thangorodrim and beyond Russingon with canon divergence. It is exceptional but deals with a very heavy subject-matter, so make sure you read the tags.

Five Single Chapter Fics/One-Shots

1. Tender Morsels by @sallysavestheday

Everything Sally writes is brilliant, but this one did something to my brain. Dark romance (like cannibalism dark) and Russingon coupled with perfect prose. It makes me go insane.

2. Project Requirements by @searchingforserendipity25

This short supply list by Miriel will delight you and break your heart. The author is an expert in this.

3. The knife that shapes the knife by @quixoticanarchy

This OC-centric fic is a careful, heartbreaking study of observing without acting, going with the flow until you sink into evil when you were trying to do good. It stayed with me for a long time.

4. enemy of good by @welcomingdisaster

Every single fic by the author could be here, I chose this one because it was the first one of I read. Maedhros is going through some stuff and tries to resolve it through bondage and sex. Incredible characterization and writing. Russingon, E-rated.

5. post mortem by @swanmaids

Examination of four Feanorian bodies post-Second Kinslaying - a brilliant idea, executed perfectly. The clinical description doesn't take away from the horror, on the contrary, adds to it.

Five Oldies but Goodies

1. No Way You Can Fall by @hhimring

Himring's Maedhros is one of my absolute favorite Maedhroses ever. This fic takes place post-canon with Maedhros freshly out of the Halls meeting a suspicious Fingolfin at Fingon's house. It is written with so much care and gentleness. It warms my heart every time I read it.

2. Tributary by @oopsbirdficced

It's a Spirited Away/Silm fusion and it's Russingon! What's not to love? Adorable, beautiful and magical, I still remember this fic from time to time, even though I read it so long ago.

3. In From the Cold by @dorwinionwhining

Short but so sweet and so well-written Russingon ficlet. The tenderness and their easiness with each other kills me. So good!

4. fools enough to love each other more than we can bear by @potatoobsessed999

After the Nirnaeth, Maedhros receives braids with golden ribbons from Morgoth. Now he has to decide if he should go and save Fingon. Unbearably painful and so good. I can't bear to reread it because it hurts so much.

5. Testrun by goldtoashes and heirsofbrokenlegacies

This is just one part of the authors' series Grow as we go. It's a Modern AU that includes pairings Maedhros/Fingon, Maedhros/Sauron, Sauron/Celebrimbor and even Maedhros/Sauron/Fingon. The whole series is amazing, but this part is my favorite because it's just Maedhros and Fingon in domestic bliss. The series is E-rated, this one part is M-rated.

Five Fics of My Own

1. Lady Makalaurë Fëanáriel Dying of Poison, Late Second Age, Artist Unknown

Post-canon Maglor wanders alone in her spaceship until she discovers something that Gil-galad has to know. This fic doesn't get much attention, which is understandable (it's an AU, a Space AU at that, genderbent and Maglor/Wife), but I loved writing it and I still like it. This was my second TRSB fic this year, and it's the first time I wrote two fics for this event, so I'm pretty proud of it.

2. My cannibalism ficlet and it's companion the other cannibalism ficlet

The first one is quite tragic because I like tormenting Fingon. The second one is lighter in mood, but it's still about cannibalism, so.

3. Alone in the Unknown

The angstiest thing I've ever written. It's the latest part of my Fingon Lives AU. This one focuses on Maglor and his futile attempts to bring Maedhros out of his near-catatonic state.

4. Fingolfin and Fingon and later Maedhros and Fingon discuss some heavy subjects

Not to be too modest, but I think I did some of my best writing here. Fingolfin has fears that Maedhros might be under Morgoth's influence and shares them with his son.

5. Now a Quill, Now a Sword

Maedhros and Fingon's relationship told mostly through letters. This fic deserves a click just for @melestasflight's absolutely stunning art embedded in there if not for anything else. It was a pleasure collaborating with them.

Summary of fic: "Maedhros wakes up again, on the first morning of the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. Of course, nobody calls it that. For them, it hasn't happened yet."

The paylist follows the general vibe of the narrative: Maedhros' realization of the cycles, his struggles, his saving grace, and his determination to succeed in battle with his loved ones alive no matter how many times he has to get back up and try again. The songs genre is mostly: indie, folk, with some musical numbers thrown in because honestly, its not one of my playlists without a musical song or two

This is a brilliant fic so if you havent read it already i would reccomend! It's also an ongoing series and I've probably read the entire thing over a dozen times, its really become one of my favourite comfort fics/series of all time.

It's a 50k+ words 1920s gangster silmarillion AU and believe me when I tell you there's everything in it. the noldor (and the sindar) are rival gangs, there's police officer oromë, there's dwarves, there's family drama, family feud even, there's fingon wearing golden ribbons on his hat, there's people going on movie dates and nargothrond is a god damned night club. starring, the nauglamir. I can't stress enough how smooth and effortless the narration and the writing are and how good the characterization of every single one of them is. and they all fuck. in every possible sense.

everyone should read the Silmarillion Among Us AU close encounters of the fourth (base) kind. I cannot recommend it enough. 38k; russingon with background canonical couples; porn with extensive plot; premise: Maedhros has just moved in with Fingon on Fingon’s-side-of-the-family’s spaceship, and is adjusting to that life (which includes several big and many little deaths). It has everything you could possibly want in a Silmarillion Among Us AU:

Creative and interesting xenobiology and xenopsychology, in a sexy way and just in an ‘aliens are neat’ way

Moral issues that make me genuinely uncomfortable

Quite good (hot) smut

I literally laughed out loud repeatedly

A significant period of the fic where you have to wonder if Finwë genuinely prioritizes the lives and happiness of one set of grandchildren over the other (while Maedhros decides Not To Think About It)

A much shorter sequel (5k) starring clone!Glorfindel

And most importantly of all, a basic premise which would INSTANTLY start a fight in late YT Tirion!

Excerpt 1:

Fingon reaches past him and Maedhros nearly startles at the sound of the door sliding closed, close enough behind him he can feel the pressure of the air displacing on his back.

Cornered, some part of his mind yelps, nervous. Predator, another part points out wryly, already resigned to the reality of shacking up with an alien with active prey instincts. Fingon, most of him sighs in strange, newfound contentment at having this latest addition to his tiny circle of loved ones practically cuddled up into his space.

Excerpt 2:

“You know,” Argon interjects again, longsuffering, “maybe we wouldn’t know so much about your ‘sexcapades’ if you just kept it to the bedroom like literally everyone else on the ship.”

“Oh, that is a blatant lie!” Fingon scoffs. “If you knew where Turvo and Elenwë used to—”

“Okay!” Turgon calls over from the next table, “maybe we should just change the subject!”

“What’s this ‘we’ you speak of, you aren’t even involved in this conversation,” Fingon calls back. “Stop eavesdropping!”

“If our names get mentioned, we’re involved!” Turgon insists. “Honey, tell them.”

Elenwë twists in her seat to look at them properly, expression supremely judgmental. “You don’t get to claim you’ve had epic sexcapades until you’ve made love in the captain’s chair. You’re like babies to me.”

After repeatedly getting ficlets from me where I cram in Russingon wherever I can, they have returned the favour.

I was fairly screaming when I read this. It starts out very tense, but ends in a beautiful, soft, touching scene that made my heart soar!

A blessed artist and crafter, lferion submits incredibly inspiring art to events, and I am always utterly bewitched by it!

Moreover, they've written truly mesmerising, poetic, compelling, and often mind-blowingly beautiful fics!

A Russingon Retrospective

Maedhros! Fingon! All the angst and tenderness and bitterness and the wasted potential! I've been in the mood to try some new things with them recently, which was a reason to look back at the overall arc of my Russingon fics and see what might be a good addition. I've written more of them than I'd realized...if you're in a Russingon mood, here's a tasty sampler (newest to oldest, a mix of angst and humor and horror and fluff, all canon-compliant or canon-adjacent):

The Marriage of True Minds (M: 1,900 words). Maedhros and Fingon experiment with ósanwë's many uses and permutations. Spicy.

The Region Cloud Hath Mask'd Him From Me Now (T: 2,000 words). Misty meetings (and missed meetings). Bring tissues.

In These Altered States, Rejoice (T: 1,300 words). Reborn Maedhros and Fingon adjust to their new lives.

Between the Shadow and the Soul (M: 600 words). Fingon is tired of waiting for Maedhros to make a move, and makes his own.

Hyemation (T: 500 words). Fingon finds some closure after the Helcaraxë by wintering over at Himring with Maedhros.

Tender Morsels (M: 600 words). Horror-ish. They love each other, but they are monstrous. Cannibalism, voluntary mutilation. Mind the tags.

Hymn/Dirge (T: 350 words). It is Lalwen who marries them.

Full Disclosure (T: 2,000 words). Epistolary commentary on Finrod's relations with the many peoples of Beleriand. Mildly spicy humor.

All The Way Home We'll Be Warm (T: 1,100 words). Maedhros finds Hurin annoying until he solves the problem of how to make Fingon happy when visiting Himring in the winter. Humor.

A Thousand Years and More (T: 600 words). Fingon doesn't adjust well to being reborn without Maedhros.

The Quality of Mercy is Not Strained (T: 600 words). Fingon tries to play word games with Mandos around the concept of Doom. He is not successful.

Helcaraxë (T: 300 words). Fingon's thoughts on ice (and Ice). Pairs nicely with Hyemation.

Long-Remembered, Long-Imagined Touch (T: 350 words). Reborn Fingon is disappointed in his new hands.

And a Voice Answering Called to Him (T: 800 words). Maedhros and Fingon at Fingolfin's coronation.

I'll be damned if I don't mention @hhimring's classic No Way You Can Fall featuring a Fingolfin who is as feisty as his firstborn and figures out that Russingon is a thing, along with several other pieces from Gloom, Doom and Maedhros

The road is narrow, the horizon wide a long favorite by @quixoticanarchy with a bonus Elrond, who as usual, comes to solve everyone's problems

The Sun Must Go On Rising by @tilion-writes, I'm about halfway through and can already vouch for this Russingon ala Orpheus and Eurydice

Red and its sort-of-less-angsty-sequel Fears by Yours truly where Fingon and Maedhros re-learn who they are with and without one another (with some help from moms, grannies and gods)

Tolkien Fanfic Reading Month - Days 13 and 14

I was very tired and not in a great mood, so I decided to go through the Russingon fic list by @sallysavestheday. It was the right decision despite the fact that many of the fics made me cry. It's not only angst though. You'll find everything in Sally's fics - from heartbreak to uncontrollable laughter.

There are 14 fics on the list - all Russingon to various degrees, all SWF (M at most), none longer than 2000 words. And most importantly, all brilliant. (And a Voice Answering Called to Him deserves more love. Just saying.)

Voices That Were Once Ours 4.8k, M Finrod meets the host of Fëanor in the new lands. They are not the Elves he remembers from Valinor and Maglor, least of all. Reconciliation is a long road for them both until a Song brings them together, and they find each other again.

sown as seed in the dark 800, G Ard-galen witnesses Fingolfin's final stand.

Stay, Forever 1,3k, G The first snow brings bittersweet memories for Elrond. Through remembrance and song, he reveals a feeling that has been budding in his heart for a long time.

Monster 2,8k, T The Noldor come together in battle at the Dagor Aglareb, and Fingon must face his past and his feelings for Maedhros.
