Currently thinking about how the death of Polites fractured the dynamic of the crew which led to quite literally the rest of the Odyssey in EPIC the musical. The entire crew relied on this man and NO, I am not exaggerating.
Polites served as the temperance of Ody; the diplomatic and optimistic council who was a liaison between the captain and his crew. Why? Well, Polites is never acknowledged to hold any power in the crew (we're talking EPIC canon here) but is clearly respected and valued by the captain. This combination is familiar; the crew is comfortable approaching Polites because he's their equal and Polites is comfortable approaching Odysseus with their problems because they're friends. That is his role.
Now I have my own issues with Eurylochus but I do think he's written well. And I also do not think he is fully in the wrong. HOT TAKE I KNOW, but hear me out: Eury was Ody's right hand. Odysseus is clever but he's also pretty humble (excluding the whole "I am the infamous Odysseus" but Bro had a right to crash out there). Odysseus does not surround himself with "yes-men", he surrounds himself with friends who are willing to challenge him. Case and point; Eurylochus and Polites.
Polites challenges his morals and instincts - Polites is always trying to ensure that Odysseus is doing what is best for himself. "You can relax my friend" is not something you tell your leader to do casually. It's what you tell your friend to do when they're working themselves too damn hard. "Greet the world with open arms" is not what you tell your commanding officer who you're trusting to get you home.
Eurylochus challenges his decisions. Always does, in every scene and NO that is not a flaw. He serves as a point of resistance so that Odysseus is forced to consider every option carefully. He makes sure Ody has considered the worst-case scenario and is fully prepared to back him up when that happens. Bro was ready to burn the Lotus island down if his friends didn't come back. Eury is the guy who's willing to strike first and make the difficult decisions, much like Ody is. He is a good second in command.
The point is: the two filled massively different roles in the crew. Eury is supposed to challenge Odysseus and question his decisions - that is his job; to make sure that his captain is making the best decisions for the crew. Polites is supposed to support Ody; he is a friend, a confident, and a source of trust and camaraderie.
What makes them such a well-oiled machine is that they all have specific roles and they are good at them. Ody makes the plans and decides what battles to fight, Eurylochus takes initiative and counterbalances Polites optimism, Polites offers ethical and moral support while counterbalancing Eury's cynicism. That is why the crew works so well.
Odysseus has someone to rely on and someone to challenge him. The crew has someone to confide in and a second in command to consider their needs. They have a captain who listens to both. Eurylochus and Polites have each other to balance out and a captain who values their opinions.
It works. It's balanced. It's a powerful type of leadership.
Then Polites dies, and so does that balance.
Eurylochus finds himself having to fill two roles. He has to question his captain and calm the crew. He has to place complete trust in Odysseus as Polites did, but he can't. His and Ody's relationship has always been based on challenging one another to ensure that they're considering every angle. He has spent his entire life being critical of Odysseus' plans because he knows that's what he's supposed to do. He doesn't have blind faith, he's a realist - optimism and trust were Polites forte.
Odysseus finds himself without that support and line of connection to Polites. He grows disconnected from the crew because of it and flounders when it comes to dealing with Eurylochus.
This is seen clearly in the song: Luck Runs Out
Eury was not in the wrong for pointing out how fucking crazy it is to casually ask the Wind God for some help. Sure let's go knock on a god's door and ask for loose change; HELLO!? There are so many ways it could've gone wrong and it has always been Eury's job to point such flaws out. It's what he's always done - probably what he's done for Ody throughout the war.
But Odysseus? He just lost his best friend and his mentor. His entire support system is crumbling, so being challenged by the one person who he needs to have his back pushes him into a dangerous space as a leader.
On the one hand, he cannot afford to have Eury question his every move, especially since Polites isn't there to challenge him for Odysseus. Especially now that he doesn't have Polites instilling trust in the crew - he can't afford Eury's challenges to eroding what trust remains in his disheartened crew.
On the other, pushing Eurylochus away and demanding staunch obedience from him is so out of character for their relationship that all trust between Captain and SOC is suddenly up in the air.
That is why Eurylochus opens the windbag. Not because he wanted "treasure", but because the captain who demanded he "be devout" is not the captain he's followed all this time. The captain who sits awake for four days, eyes following every crewmember with a glimmer of distrust is not the Odysseus Eurylochus knows.
Eury knows Odysseus with Polites. If Polites had been alive, he would've been able to quell the crew's distrust because he would have had full trust in their captain. Odysseus would've been able to trust his crew because he could trust Polites. He cannot trust Eurylochus to have that same blind faith, because Eury doesn't have it; and the crew knows it.
Everything's changed since Polites
It's not a throwaway line; it's what the crew whispers to Eurylochus. He's different. He's changed. Odysseus is not the same. Maybe it is treasure. Maybe he's lying to us. How do we know? How do you know?
And Eurylochus doesn't know. He isn't certain. Odysseus is his friend and his captain; that's a difficult power dynamic to balance.
So Eury opens the windbag, because he doesn't trust Odysseus. It's a different sort of mistrust though - not one of constructive criticism from a friend, but earnest dangerous mistrust of your superior.
Eurylochus leads the mutiny, because that was always his role as Ody's right hand; to question and stand against what he felt was wrong. To speak for the crew as another leader.
But Eurylochus never wanted to be captain. He never wanted to betray his friend. He felt he had to - Yes, he was willing to leave crewmates behind in Circe's lair because he has always been willing to make those hard calls.
Odysseus? He so rarely does what Eurylochus wants to do because they are not the same person. Eury doesn't want Ody to be him (Eury has flaws, but ambition is not one of them. He recognizes he isn't a good leader hence he immediately falls back on Ody's judgment after the holy cow bit) - he wants Ody to listen to him and consider his insights. So for Odysseus to sacrifice six of their crewmates without a word to his friend - without consulting anyone - without leaving space for his right-hand man to question him... that is when Eurylochus loses faith in Odysseus. Because that is not his captain. He doesn't know who it is. But his captain would never.
Hypocritical? Yes. But also rather insightful.
And Odysseus? He loses the last pillar of support he has in the crew, not because Eurylochus changes - not even because he changes. He loses it all because it is doomed to fall apart without Polites. It was all doomed to fall apart when they lost their counterbalance.
It is not Ody's mercy or ruthlessness that kills them. It is not Eury's distrust. Both of those existed far before it all went to shit. It was Polites dying. It was the fact that the three of them were so well suited for leadership as long as it was the three of them.
It had to be the three of them.

Part Two / Part Three
Ao3
It's 8:45 am.Â
The Red Barn, which is neither red nor a barn, has been open since 7, catering to the early morning crowd with rounds of coffee and pancakes.
It was no Benny's, but given the size of Hawkins and the lack of alternatives?
No one was complaining.Â
They were all too happy someone had opened up another watering hole for the working class man (or lass, as Foreman Shelly will dutifully remind you) which meant the place was packed with both day and night shift regulars, passing each other in staggered waves.Â
It also meant Wayne was sharing the packed breakfast counter with a warehouse worker by the name of John Cheese on one side and Police Chief Jim Hopper on the other.
He doesn't mind it.
Wayne's a man on a budget thinner than his shoelace, but he's also a man who understands that small indulgences need to be made in life or you didn't truly live it.
This is how he convinces himself to get a coffee at the Barn after work everyday, reading the morning newspaper and chatting with the other regulars before he heads home.
Bonus, it gets him out of the rapid-fire franticness that is his nephew in the mornings.
(All the love in the world wouldn't change the fact that all that Eddie came with a lot of noise.Â
The kind of noise that was a tried and true recipe for a headache right after a long shift.)
As a trade off, Wayne went to bed early so he could wake up in time for dinner with Eddie.
It was a nice little system that worked for them.Â
A routine Wayne was reminiscing fondly on, when the pager on Chief Hopper started to chirp. With a sad moan, the man fished out a few crumbled bills and threw them on the counter, abandoning his coffee to trudge out to his truck.
This was not unusual.
Particularly recently, given they were but a scant few weeks past that whole mall ordeal. A fact all too easy to remember when one caught sight of the Chiefâs still healing face.Â
What was unusual, was when he came storming through the doors a minute later, face now a furious shade of red with his hat clenched in his hand.Â
The energy in the room shifted, taking on something a little watchful as Hopper swept his gaze from side to side, like a dog on the hunt.
Judging by the way he stilled when he caught sight of Wayne, the latter assumed he found what he was looking for and could only pray it was the person behind him.Â
(He liked John, but Wayne had enough trouble this year and he wasn't looking for any more.)Â
"Munson." Hopper called, striding over and dashing all his hopes. There was a choked fury emitting off him, and given the way John audibly scooted his chair away, Wayne knew everyone had clocked it.Â
"Chief." Wayne greeted, inclining his head towards him.
Idly he wondered what the hell his nephew had done this time.
'So help me if he stole all the town's lawn flamingos and put them in that damn teachers yard againâŚ.'
Wayne didn't even get to finish his threat, the Chief was already next to him.Â
"Mind if I have a word outside?"Â
Dammit Eddie.
"Ah hell, what's he done now?" Wayne asked with a sigh, eyeing the coffee he had left morosely.Â
There was still almost half of it left and the pot had tasted fresh for once.Â
"What?" Hopper said, and then Wayne got to watch as the man ran through an entire chain of thoughts, each one punctuated by things like; "Oh," and "No. "Â
"This is something else." He finished, flushed and fidgeting, anger making him antsy.Â
Wayne stared up at him.Â
"Something else?" He repeated, not sure he heard.
"Yes, something else." Hopper snapped impatiently, before leaning forward, voice dropping low. "This doesn't involve your nephew, but we both know you owe me for how many times I've let that kid off, Wayne. That's a damn big favor I've been doing you and I'm calling it in."Â
If it were any other cop, it'd sound like a threat.
It was Hopper though. The same Hopper who Wayne had gone to school with.
They'd never been friends exactly, but they had been friendly and remained so. Even now, after Wayne had taken Eddie in, whoâd gone on to be an undeniable pain in the local PDâs ass.Â
Hopper really did let the kid off easy.Â
Wayne really did owe him.Â
So he put down his coffee with a sigh, passed his newspaper over to John and stood up, motioning for Hopper to lead the way. Got into the Chiefâs truck when he waved him in, and didnât make a big fuss when Hopper tore out of the parking lot like hell was about to open up under them.Â
"Not a lot of the kids involved in the mall fire could be identified, but a few of them were." Hopper started, which felt nonsensical given the utter lack of context.Â
Wayne hummed to show heâd heard.Â
âSome of them got banged up more than others, and a lot of people wouldnât be surprised if they didnât make it.âÂ
A pause, Hopper white knuckling the steering wheel as he swung the truck hard around a turn.Â
âFor certain people, those kids dying is the preferred outcome.âÂ
A mix of fear and warning swopped low in Wayneâs gut.Â
"Jim." Wayne said, dropping the use of a last name because if any situation called for it, it was this one. "What exactly are you saying here?"Â
The Chief chewed on his split lip.Â
"I know you're smart, Munson. I know you, and plenty of others are aware that something's happening, been happening in this town."Â
Which was a hell of an understatement if you asked Wayne. Plenty of the upper classes might be able to bury their heads when it came to the military parading about and the flow of âaccidentsâ they brought in their wake, but then, they didn't see all the other signs of trouble.Â
The absolute oddity that was Starcourtâs construction.Â
How it had been built using primarily outside crews and anyone who'd taken a singular look at the site could tell you they were building it weird.Â
Weird as in it looked like it would have a multi-level basement, and not what a mall should have.Â
Then there were the constant electrical problems. The backups upon backups that failed. The late night delivery vans headed out to the Hawkins Lab.Â
The things in the woods that kept spooking all the deer and the weird markings they left behind that unnerved even the hardest of hunters.Â
This didnât even touch the Russian military that more than one reputable person swore was hanging around.Â
The very same Wayne himself had seen, on more than one occasion.Â
(And you couldnât deny it; those boys were military. Past or present, it didnât matter. They moved like a threat, and Wayne treated them like one, staying well clear.)
"Yeah." Wayne admitted. "I also know better than to stick my nose in it."Â
"That makes you a smarter man than me.' Hop complained under his breath, but the anger was self directed.Â
"The point is, there are some government types crawling around, doing shit they shouldn't be doing, and more than a few of them are in the business of making people disappear.âÂ
This was absolutely not where Wayne had thought this was going.Â
Hopper took a breath. Than another.
A third.
It was starting to make Wayne nervous, in a way he hadnât felt since a social worker had brought Eddie to him for the last time and final time. It was the feeling that things were about to shift in a way that would change the course of his life.Â
"Steve Harrington is sitting in my office right now, beat to absolute shit.â Hopper admitted.
Wayne gave him the floor to talk, letting him go at his own pace without interruptions.Â
âHe's there because some of those government types finally figured out his parents are never fucking home.âÂ
Wayne sucked in a breath.Â
"We both know his parents, Wayne. Harassing them to come back and take care of their kid won't work, and frankly, Iâm beginning to think all the phone lines are tapped anyway.â He winced here, like voicing such a thing pained him, and Wayne understood.
It sounded a little too out there, a little like he was buying into a conspiracy.Â
Except he wasnât. Wayne knew he wasnât.Â
Jim Hopper might have been an alcoholic, a man living in pain and unconcerned with his own life, but if there was one thing he was solid for, it was shit like this.
He didnât jump to conclusions. Didnât believe the first thing people told him. Even at his worst, he did the work to see what was really happening, and made his decisions from there.Â
(Even if that decision was to accept the occasional bribe, or drive an intoxicated 13 year old Eddie home instead of hauling his ass into the drunk tank.)Â
âHarrington wonât admit it, but heâs got a hell of a concussion if not a full blown brain injury and heâs not reacting as well as he should to Suites trying to run him off the road.â Hopper continued. Angrily, he added, âDamn kid didnât even come to me until they tried to break into his house last night.âÂ
His fingers squeezed the wheel so hard Wayne heard the leather creak in protest.Â
âIâd take him, but my cabin is being renovated fromâŚâ He trailed off, heaving a sigh.
âA storm, so me and my kid are bunked with the Byers right now and weâre full up.âÂ
Hawkins hadn't had a storm like that in years, but Wayne wasn't going to call him out on the blatant lie.Â
âI need a place to stash him for the next few weeks, until I can work with some of the higher ups sniffing around, and get them to call off their attack dogs.âÂ
âAnd you want to stuff him with me.â Wayne finished.Â
âI know you donât have the room.â Hopper admitted easily, stopping his truck at a red light and locking eyes with the other man. âBut I also know youâll be the last place anyone would look for him.âÂ
'Ainât that the damn truth.'
âYouâre really gonna go this far for a Harrington?â Wayne asked, instead of the million of other questions leaping to the forefront of his mind.Â
This one, he figured, was the most important.Â
âHeâs not his dad.â Hopper said, as firm as Wayne had ever heard him. âHeâs not either of his parents, and he saved my little girl.âÂ
Wayne hadnât even known Hopper had another little girl, but he also knew better than to ask where the guy had found one.Â
It wasnât his business, just as nothing else Jim was involved in, was his business.
Except, apparently, Steve Harrington.Â
âIâm gonna need my own truck if Iâm takin' Harrington home.â Wayne said easily, instead of bothering to ask anything else.
If Jim said the kid was different than his daddy, then he was--because when it came to things like that, Jim didn't lie.
No point in it.Â
âI know. Just needed to talk to you first, without anyone overhearing.â Jim said, before swinging the police truck around and heading back to the Barn.Â
âIâll stay in contact with you, and Iâll make sure Harrington pays you for the pleasure of your hospitality. Just--â Here Jim cut himself off, looking like he was struggling an awful lot with the next thing he wanted to say.Â
Once again, Wayne waited him out.
âDonât let Steve fool you. Heâs good at fooling people, letting them think heâs okay. Too good at it, and between the two of us, I have a real good idea of the reason why.âÂ
A memory came to Wayne unbidden, of Richard Harrington and Chet Hagan, beating some poor kid in the highschool bathroom bloody. The grins on their faces as the poor guy wailed for them to stop.
How they almost hadnât.Â
âAlright.â Wayne agreed.
Hopper swung back into the Barn's parking lot, and Wayne moved right to his own beat to shit truck, ready to follow Jim back to the police station.
He wasnât a praying man, not anymore, but Catholisim wasnât a thing that let you go easy.Â
He found himself sending up a quick prayer, fingers flicking in a kind of miniature version of the sign of the cross.Â
Considering his own kidâs history with Harrington, and the sheer small space of the trailer?Â
Wayne had a feeling it was needed.

What are your witch headcanons?(Thinking of making a story about young kids witches/wizards that shrink down the size of cookies)
Congratulations! You have opened Pandora's Box of shit I brainrot about! BEHOLD!!!
The Many Cookie Run Human Headcanon/Theories I Spin Around in my Brain
Based on what bits and pieces we've seen of the Witch of Light and her Coven (and some bits of concept info from the Witch's Castle Artbook). the human world seemed to be spiraling out of control. War, famine, greed, and more was leading the planet to death. The world was practically self-imploding. It seems like this specific Coven - which I call the Coven of Light - wanted to change things and make the world abundant once again via Dessert Magic.
Whether they discovered this kind of magic or it was already a thing before this is unclear.
They must have been experimenting with Life Powder, and I wouldn't be surprised if why they focused on desserts would be because Life Powder might just be easier to bake into things than use it for anything else. It seems like a very unruly substance that even Dark Enchantress has a difficult time handling.
However, even tho the Witch of Light and her Coven had good intentions that doesn't mean whatever magical breakthroughs they discovered were going to be treated with respect by OTHER Witches. The other Witches we've seen so far (like the ones at the Banquet) seem to be in the magical-baking game for entirely different reasons. What those reasons are have been left pretty vague, but I wouldn't be surprised if it had something to do with extending their lifespans or increasing their own magical abilities. After all, consuming Life Powder might have an effect on humans we aren't privy to.
Basically: WoL goes to an island/continent/whatever to do her Life Powder research and make the world a better place, winds up creating an entire sugary ecosystem and becoming a goddess WHOOPSIE!!!
Other spellcasters see this and go "oh shit that's some powerful stuff over there and also the land isn't dogshit and can sustain life" hence City of Wizards, other Witches arriving, etc.
From a conversation we see between the Shadow Witch and Sheriff Whiskerton, along with some interviews leading up to the release of Witch's Castle, it seems humanity has survived whatever near-extinction was going to claim them. However, as a result, magic is being abandoned and those who practice it (Witches and Wizards) are being persecuted.
Before arriving at the Castle, the Shadow Witch lived with her Grandmother who owned a bakery. It was massively successful! Until rumors started being spread about them practicing witchcraft. Suddenly, the whole town turned against them. (Witch's Castle Special Story - Lab in Chaos)
ââŚmagical baking has become a forbidden craft. Attempts at the Ultimate Recipe shook up the world, you see. Now, Magic is almost forgotten. Witches and Wizards hide their true identities and seemingly, magic had all but disappeared from the world.â - Witchâs Castle Launching Showcase
Magic is a dying art in the human parts of the world, and is seemingly a shunned practice. This might have had something to do with why the Wizards abandoned their City. Maybe they were trying to escape persecution? Perhaps they were under threat of attack?
The City of Wizards seemed to be an independent city-state, and a powerful one at that, so I can imagine nations with strong bias against magic-users would probably feel threatened.
Regardless, the general human populace seems ignorant of Cookies and other living Desserts, just as cookies seem ignorant about humans. It looks like Earthbread as a whole is difficult to get to and difficult to leave. Perhaps this was put in place by the WoL to protect it from the wider world?
Or maybe what few Witches are left cast such a spell at one point in order to hide away from a world that wants them dead? After all, there's evidence of Witches still living across Earthbread, hidden away and isolated in huts and castles.
Regardless, Witches and Wizards are far and few, but what human spellcasters remain practice in secret. I can imagine them viewing Earthbread as a safe haven since such a place gives them freedom to practice their craft without having to be afraid of getting burnt at the fucking stake like in the Salem Witch Trials.

In your Spitfire AU, since Zuko is looking after Lu Ten II, what happened to Ursa?
Zuko is slightly older in the Spitfire AU. He was banished at fifteen, his head a little clearer and denial a little weaker than in canon. After his first look through the Air Temples, Zuko decides that if he can't find a myth, he might as well search for the next best thing.
Finding Ursa isn't easy, but in time he makes it to a secluded house in a near-forgotten part of the world. His mom is there, older and stronger and alive.
But she isn't alone.
And Zuko, as it turns out, didn't keep the best company during his search.
When Ursa is discovered and her secrets are laid bare for assassins (for Ozai) to find, she begs Zuko to take his little brother and run. She'll do anything it takes to protect her children, even if that means leaving them behind to keep a target off their back. Ursa diverts attention from them and allows Lu Ten's ancestry to be kept a secret. She orders Zuko not to follow her again, and disappears.
Zuko is left with a little three-year-old brother to raise and a mother he cannot hold onto.

He's a mess of courseâand raising the little brother you never knew you had isn't easy.#But he has Uncle and (once those loyal to his father have been taken care of) he also has his crew.#Look three years into the future and you've got a six-year-old Spitfire running around the ship and giving Zuko early gray hair#Ursa will be reunited with them in the future. She holds him and takes care of him and makes sure he's well-behaved. And he loves her.)#(Is that what makes a mother? Or is it the blood you share?)#Ursa isn't much like Tara. But she loves him dearlyâthere's a reason he has the name of someone who was so dear to her.#She is Lu Ten's mother. Zuko's mother. Uncle's sister.#And she isn't like Tara. Shantyman
Headcanon time Doubling as the Salty Shark's leader in moral boosting, Blue Sponge Cookie also works as the Shantyman and instigates, well, shanties as the crew works. Which was a real thing they were used for, both for fun and to keep the sailors on a rhythm. And while having a good singing voice for that was... Negotiable; Blue's actually got a good set of pipes. Woulda made it big as a singer, had he not been more interested in the sea than the stage-

just...thinking about how zeb was picked up by kanan and hera, two kids (basically), one of whom was also a survivor of genocide, and another whose species has been persecuted, enslaved, etc. repeatedly, and they helped him. zeb, who hadn't seen young people of his own species in so long, and as an older being, he's probably unsure of his place in the galaxy after what happened on Lasan, and having young people trust in him, look up to him, rely on him, that probably made zeb feel so needed and wanted. like, they're experienced and confident, and far wiser and more mature than maybe someone their age ought to be, because of what they've gone through. so he probably doesn't think he can teach them much.
and like zeb knows they're young; but just thinking about when that really hit him, how young they are. and how he probably vowed to look out for them, as much as they look out for him. like, thinking about how much fear he probably had in calling any place home again, after what happened to his last home. but these two young adults gave him a home, a safe place to land; they gave him their friendship and gave him a little found family to call his own after everyone he lost. and he's happy and proud to belong to a family again.
#i so badly want a book or a comic run about when it was just kanan hera and zeb on the crew. i need to know how they met#like when they found zeb he probably was at a really low point and needed someone to be looking out for him. and he found that in them#but then him realizing that they're YOUNG and they need someone looking out for them too and yeah#garazeb orrelios#zeb orrelios#kanan jarrus#hera syndulla#the ghost crew#swr#star wars rebels
