‘Get off my ship’ Just thinking about this scene. Ed does have claim to the Revenge having commandeered it in 103. It’s how these things work.
If Ed really is the monster he thinks he is, he could say to Stede, ‘Only by the grace of Blackbeard do you still get to call yourself Captain.’ Ed could easily lay full claim to the Revenge, refuse to budge. Make Stede leave instead. Not sleep on a beach. But he doesn’t take the role even for a little while. And there are many reasons why, both good and not so.
And co-captains? It’s nothing to do with who captains the Revenge. It might help the crew’s confusion a little, but between Stede and Ed, it’s an unspoken emotional understanding telling Ed not to leave, that Stede wants him to stay.
Co-captains is a domestic partnership agreement.
Ed never lays claim to the Revenge until Stede isn’t on it anymore. And cedes control immediately once Stede returns - ‘I’m not captain anymore, you are.’
Even if it doesn’t always occur in the best of circumstances, I really like Ed’s respect for Stede’s captaincy.

I usually skip the vast majority of 1x8 so I don't talk/analyze that episode too much. But I was thinking about CJ's swift justice as well as the imagery in the movie The Lighthouse.
Tumblr media
CJ was sent to the Revenge to get Ed off the ship and he was told in some manner that "Stede warped Blackbeard's brain." When he arrives, the crew, Stede, and Ed are all getting along. There is a casualness amongst the whole group. And Jack keeps up these appearances at first, becoming a part of the group, but this is part of the mission, adding little cutting remarks at Stede and trying to not only separate Stede and Ed but to "remind" Ed of the old Blackbeard that he knew. All this to separate Ed and take away the friendship he is developing with Stede and the crew. (This is also done to Ed by similar cutting remarks but also more of the toxicity of pirate life.)
Jack escalates as time starts to run out. And there is an argument to be made if he hits Karl with the whip on purpose or if that was an accident. CJ is not as drunk as he appears, he is still working the crew and Ed. We see his prowess with the whip, so I think the reading that this was done on purpose is clearly supported by the text. (In fact him doing it on accident doesn't make sense).
That is the final straw for CJ. He has crossed a line, several in fact. The audience knows how important the seagull is to the first mate, and CJ essentially killed his friend, but he also crossed a line in a common seafaring belief/myth. "Bad luck to kill a sea bird."
A pirate at sea as long as CJ has been would know this; he would know the myth of killing a sea bird as bad luck. Yet that is the thing he decides to do to really start to turn the crew against him and gets Stede to kick him off the ship.
The Lighthouse is psychological in that we see the characters slowly go mad over their time there. And it is alluded to that at least part of it is brought on by the killing of a sea bird.
OFMD has never been subtle about the villains/antagonists getting their comeuppance and this is twofold for CJ. First, Olivia challenges him to a western duel, which is very fitting. Since CJ's whole schtick and outfit is western-inspired, but the original trio of Blackbeard's crew are also introduced with written film making throughout the first season. Second, he gets hit with a cannonball, the object of his enemy that he (knowingly) teamed up with.
Enjoy some standoff photos cause they make me happy.

There is something to be said later on about the use of a cannonball to "kill" Ed, who has a whole speech about being a seabird who doesn't want to land, and the crew feeling guilty about it afterward (cursed suit). But because all of them are the protagonists, these comeuppance aren't dished out. But that's only half formed.

Treacherous liar? Frenchie? Bit harsh. Okay, he fails to carry out an important instruction once, then lies about it. Obviously and badly. Offers to throw himself overboard when ‘found out’, he is so racked with fear and guilt.
We know who is a treacherous liar though. Who deceives and equivocates constantly. Ed’s displacing some feelings. How can Ed ever process what Izzy has done to him? When does Izzy ever show proper remorse for his actions other than when it’s too late to answer for them?
Treacherous liar doesn’t begin to scratch the surface.
