This magnificent climbing frame has been created in the productive garden for Phaseolus coccineus (runner bean, scarlet runner bean). This perennial vine from Central America has a tuberous root but is usually treated as an annual in Britain. The plant was introduced for its scarlet flowers but later it was grown for the edible pods. The plants need large amounts of water when the flower buds start to appear and trenches are dug in the autumn to add organic matter to retain moisture. The cultivars being grown here included Phaseolus coccineus ‘Painted Lady’, an old variety with red and white flowers and considered one of the best flavoured beans, and the heavy cropper Phaseolus coccineus ‘Scarlet Emperor’.

Langsam gegarte grüne #Bohnen in Tomatensoße. Das ganze köchelt eine gute Stunde und ist dann herrlich aromatisch und weich. Zwiebeln, Knoblauch, #Kreuzkümmel, Paprikapulver und Muskat werden mit Tomatenmark angebraten, dann kommen die kleingeschnittenen Bohnen dazu, Brühe und Tomaten. Am Ende ist alles schön eingedickt, noch etwas Koriander drauf und – lecker. #Runnerbeans have never featured highly in my cooking. Culturally speaking, we don’t use them that much in #Cuban cuisine. That’s why I wasted no time in getting experimental with one of @MeeraSodha’s runner bean-based, #vegan recipes. Mind you, as you’ll notice from the photo, #fish was added to my meal. Less vegan, more… #omnivore. Although I served this #recipe with #rice, I consciously hid it under that mountain of #curry. I’m fussy when it comes to cooking rice and this time around mine was below par. That’s what happens when you leave rice for a couple of minutes too long. It sticks to the pan and lumps up. So...layered plate with cavolo nero greens, beans, red onions, adding garlic paste and squeezes and pegs of lemon at each stage. Then added a layer of chicken liver, bacon, turned chicken upside down to cook to try and avoid the whole dry chicken breast situation! Its a bit much but then again who doesn't love a feast? The lovely weather has given me a chance to start to catch up on the lottie. Bean trench time...... filled using a mix of home-made compost & grass cuttings with a handful of 6x to help it along. It’s blossom time for my “Marjorie’s Seedling” plum And one of the pears (conference I think, the label has fallen off).
