Because of my recent obsession with Six Nations, please can we have a harringrove au where Billy is on Ireland’s rugby team and Steve is on Italy’s.

Billy is the only out player and while Steve isn’t publicly out, he’s definitely aware of his bisexuality. Their rivalry culminates in a hookup after a night out in Dublin and then making a pact to keep their slowly intensifying relationship secret. Easier said than done.

While I mean obviously one of the major reasons (American) football is gender segregated is misogyny, I’d also point out the level of homophobia that is experienced by girls playing “masculine” sports. Specifically speaking as a rugby player in the US, the prominence of lgbt women in the sport as well as the assumption that anyone playing a contact sport (or tbh any sport) is a lesbian has led to chronic underfunding esp at the local level. Not sure statistically, but anecdotally I’ve heard a lot of players from other countries express that US rugby in particular is a very Gay Sport comparatively to countries where rugby is an official sport in local schools (as opposed to more independently run grassroots orgs governed by unions the way it p much exclusively is in the us). I’d say this personally intensity of homophobia increases in older players, esp after the opportunity for college scholarships based on sports is no longer relevant.

I’d say generally that sports are seen very much in the US that boys/men do for fun/prestige/masculine supremacy vs something women/girls do for social advancement/scholarships/networking. Obviously there’s some overlap and some sports are seen as more “feminine” than others (volleyball was my first thought)

I'm sorry about the homophobia! The dynamic you describe is common to the rest of the world though, where female athletes are assumed to be lesbian and this gets worse as the sport gets more contact heavy. But outside of the US, I feel like there is not really such thing as a 'feminine' sport – gymnastics and figure skating maybe but they're not popular at all where I'm from. Its more like all sports are generally only serious business for men, and girls who play do it because they were a bit crazy or hadn't grown up.

Tennis for eg, which often has had the world's most recognizable female athletes feminizes them quite forcibly with mandates on wearing skirts. The "scandal" of Billie Jean King and Navratilova's sexualities was often described as the end of the women's tour by hysteric commentators. A lot of early tennis writing contrasts itself as a more respectable for women than other sports, but as the narrative around Battle of the Sexes stuff illustrates, ofc it was a men's game first. Due to the misogyny, chronic underfunding, lack of interest from sponsors and so on in general women's sports tends to be far more openly political – and hence the prominence of openly lesbian and bisexual women. I'd push back on LGBT. Transphobia & esp transmisogyny is rampant, women's sport functions as both a cultural battlefield and as a staging ground for the deployment of invasive tests and polices about what a woman is. Caster Semenya's case is instructive about how racism and intersexism end up collaborating in the transphobic hysteria ongoing in women's sport.

He’d started polo at her suggestion and quickly added it to the ever-growing list of things he tired of after a season, all without seeming to realize that his boredom was not the fault of his sports, but rather the player himself. He met Steve through a mutual friend, now long gone to the West Coast, and instantly decided to begin a new sport, simply to achieve the prize that came with it: Steve Harrington himself. He shipped in a beautiful strand of rose gold pearls from India- worth damn near $400k-and it was as simple as the gold clasp to ensure a marriage. He thought of it less of a purchase and more of a divine right- the same way Louis XIV constructed the palace at Versailles or Shah Jahan ordered the Taj Mahal- to convey that his flourishing wealth was proof enough of his worthiness. Okay so i have a folder on my phone where I put pics of boys I like (usually actors or rugby players lol) and somehow i have gathered 57 (FIFTY-SEVEN!) pics and gifs of Joe Keery and didn't realise I had that many.

The rules (that I totally made up years ago) say that if you have 10 or more pics you need to make a folder.

How did this happen without me realising?

I have nearly 1k pics of Dacre in a folder, btw, and nearly 500 gifs (and a separate folder for Billy/Harringrove fanart (over 400 to date). And I've been collecting pics of Nicholas Galitzine.

But the amount of Joe Keery just blindsided me.

Every so often, the dominant ratio of the home-town crowd would slowly build into a unionised chant: Cooooollingwoooooood, Coooooooollingwooooooooood, COOOOOOOOOOOOOLLINGWOOOOOOOOOOOOOD. I thought how strange, it felt less encouraging than haunting and outright taunting or more accurately, a threat to suggest: you better win, or else. It felt very British, actually, about as Punk and counter-productive as tossing bottles on stage out of love. A Brissy supporter three rows behind us spent the entire evening screaming profanities at his own team, only cheering with a tense hesitation despite them holding the lead. I knew better than to say so. I recognise he may be a typical Sports-fan™ who knows how these things go, I just hope he gets laid soon. Seagulls circled and surveyed the stadium. I wondered whether our behaviour struck them as strange but later realised: they don't care / we leave chippies here. I couldn't resist admiring the Lions who most resembled the kinds of guys from high-school who'd intimidate me into kissing their hand or fart on my head during I.T. class. The Melbourne team seemed borderline lethargic, too thoughtful or reliant on luck -- I remarked they didn't have enough hatred in their hearts. Each goal they scored was met with two levels of commercial screens flashing, a tribal drum appraisal, flashing of overhead lights and roars of acclaim. For the first time I understood beyond a spiritual sense what home ground advantage meant. So now we're down to 4 minutes in the final quarter and Collingwood score a goal, but they're still behind. I didn't crave a cigarette the entire time, my dopamine was naturally sky-high and look, I don't know the rules, hailing from the land of Rugby League as a teen I'd watch my boyfriend's training days with a kind of curious detachment, but after tonight, this sports™ stuff... I get it. The intensity, the tension and potential of vindication in it all. With 3 minutes remaining they score another and defeat Brisbane by one fucking point and are crowned the comeback-Kings. The lights, the drums, the roars and team anthem begin Good old Collingwood for ever, etc. etc. Not a bad first ever live football spectator experience. Noottta bad addalll.

Everything that happened at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane as the Queensland Reds defeated the Highlanders. To take against the Reds, the Highlanders have selected a considerably rotated squad. All Blacks prop Ethan de Groot, who started last week’s loss to the Rebels off the bench, is back in the starting lineup. Lock Oliver Haig comes into the loose forwards at No. 6, while Captain Billy Harmon switches from openside flanker to No. 8.

James Arscott and Connor Garden-Bachop have taken Folau Fakatava’s and Jacob Ratumaitavuki-Kneepkens’ places on the bench and in the starting lineup, respectively. Ajay Faleafaga moves to the bench and is replaced by Cameron Millar in the No. 10 shirt. Jonah Lowe is injured and Tanielu Tele’a returns to centre field.

Based in Dunedin, the Highlanders are a professional rugby union team from New Zealand that plays in Super Rugby. The Otago, North Otago, and Southland unions are represented on the squad, which was established in 1996 to represent the lower South Island in the recently established Super 12 tournament. The Scottish immigrants who established the areas of Otago, North Otago, and Southland in the 1840s and 1850s are credited with giving rise to the epithet “Highlanders.”

Throughout the 2011 Super Rugby season, Carisbrook in Dunedin served as their home field; on occasion, they also played at Invercargill and Queenstown. Forsyth Barr Stadium in University Plaza, Carisbrook’s successor, opened in time for the 2011 Rugby World Cup but after Super Rugby season, and the Highlanders moved in for the 2012 campaign. They placed seventh at the end of the first season, then after winning just three of eleven games, they ended last in the second season. However, in the 1998, 1999 and 2000 seasons they qualified for semi-finals; hosted the 1999 tournament final against rival South Island team the Crusaders. They lost the game 24–19, and the Crusaders eliminated them once more the next year, this time in the semi-final. They would only place in the top four once again in the next fifteen seasons, in 2002. However, they defeated the Hurricanes at Westpac Stadium in 2015 to win the Super Rugby title.

Aaron Smith, a current Highlander, has participated in 176 games with the club in record time, while 47 other players have played in more than 50 games. With 866 lifetime points, Lima Sopoaga leads the Highlanders in scoring, while Waisake Naholo leads with 45 career tries. Billy Harmon is their current captain, while Clarke Dermody is their coach.

The Super 12 included five New Zealand clubs when the Highlanders franchise was established. The North Otago, Otago, and Southland provincial rugby unions came together to become the Highlanders, a franchise that originally played on the lower South Island of New Zealand and was known as the Otago Highlanders.

Gordon Hunter was the coach and John Leslie was the captain of the 1996 squad. On March 3, 1996, they played their debut Super 12 game at Carisbrook against the Queensland Reds, whom they beat 57–17. The Highlanders were leading the competition and unbeaten after three games. But the next week, they lost to Northern Transvaal 59–29 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in South Africa. They concluded the season seventh on the table, winning just two more games that season—at Carisbrook against Natal and at Lancaster Park against the Canterbury Crusaders.

The Highlanders’ least successful season to date was 1997. They only secured three victories and came in last in the competition.  Taine Randell was now their captain, while Glenn Ross served as their coach. Among their eight losses that season was a 75-43 setback against Natal in Durban. Gavin Lawless scored 50 points for Natal, setting a tournament record.Tony Gilbert took over as coach after their 1997 season ended in last place.
