The Killik Cup, an annual invitational game between Barbarians and a national squad, promises an exhilarating clash when the home side hosts Fiji’s national rugby union team at Twickenham Stadium on Saturday, June 22 at 12:15 a.m. EDT.
The Barbarians are set to take on World Cup quarter-finalists Fiji in the annual Killik Cup match at Twickenham Stadium on Saturday evening.
This will be the second of a back-to-back schedule at the home of English rugby, with Wales and South Africa set to face off earlier in the day.
Barbarians v Fiji Rugby
Date: Saturday 22nd June 2024
Venue: Twickenham Stadium, London
Kick-off: 5:15pm
Referee: Gianluca Gnecchi (Italy)
TV Coverage: Live on Sky Sports (UK)
As is usually the case, the Barbarians have assembled a star-studded squad for this showdown, and with Fiji making significant strides in recent years, Saturday’s match in London has all the makings of a thrilling encounter.
Robbie Deans has returned to coach the Barbarians for a sixth time and his squad will be captained by All Black legend Sam Whitelock, who is set for one final swansong before retiring from an incredible career.
In their head-to-head record since 2013, these teams have met three times, with the Barbarians emerging victorious in the first two encounters, while Fiji claimed the most recent meeting in 2019.
That match was a back-and-forth affair, with the Pacific Islanders eventually securing a thrilling 33-31 victory in a showcase of running power that lasted right until the final blast of the whistle.

South Africa v Wales Rugby at Twickenham Stadium
New Post has been published on https://thedailyrugby.com/south-africa-v-wales-rugby-at-twickenham-stadium/
The Daily Rugby
https://thedailyrugby.com/south-africa-v-wales-rugby-at-twickenham-stadium/
South Africa v Wales Rugby at Twickenham Stadium
The South African Rugby Union is in charge of the nation’s national rugby union squad, also referred to as the Springboks. The Springboks, the national animal of South Africa and a native antelope, are represented by their insignia, a green and gold jersey with white shorts. Since their first test match against a touring side from the British Isles on July 30, 1891, the team has represented South Africa in international rugby union.
In men’s international rugby union, the Welsh Rugby Union is represented by the Wales national rugby union team. The Welsh Rugby Union, which oversees the sport, was founded in 1881, the same year that Wales participated in their inaugural international match versus England. The team’s home games are held in Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium, which took the position of Cardiff Arms Park as Wales’ national stadium in 1999.
South Africa vs Wales Rugby
The legions of Wales rugby supporters who made the trip will recall vividly how Warren Gatland’s team destroyed Eddie Jones’ Australia with a record 40–6 victory, setting up a World Cup quarterfinal matchup with Argentina. However, Welsh rugby had a gradual downturn after that, which persisted until the end of the domestic season. Before Munster defeated the Ospreys in the quarterfinals on Friday, the team had advanced to the United Rugby Championship (URC) play-offs, demonstrating their radiance. News for The Daily Rugby
The men’s team from Wales dropped to 10th in the global rankings after losing to the Pumas in the global Cup quarterfinal and a convincing loss in the Six Nations to win the Wooden Spoon for the first time since 2003. In their competition, the Wales Under-20 team came in fifth place.
Wales’ women’s team mimicked the men’s team a year after placing third, topping the Six Nations table despite only managing a dramatic last-day victory over Italy.  Only Ospreys emerged from the Welsh teams who participated in the URC in the top eight, with the other teams placing far lower in the standings. Dragons finished the season in 15th position out of 16, while Cardiff finished in 12th place, one spot ahead of Scarlets.
The Champions Cup and Challenge Cup finals will be held in Cardiff’s Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, and it will be the first time that no Welsh team competes in Europe’s premier championship.
Given the budgetary limitations, it has turned out to be the season of difficulty that most anticipated. No matter how you spin it, Welsh rugby is still in danger. both within and without the field. Tom Shanklin, a former center for Wales, warned Scrum V that things would worsen before they get better.
For all four of the Welsh professional teams this season, just making it through could be the biggest accomplishment. David Buttress, the departing CEO of the Dragons, described how the Gwent area was on the verge of collapse last summer. During that campaign, Cardiff’s preseason consisted of just eight players, and due to roster shortages, clubs had to practice against one another.

Another international match is lost by the Wallabies to rival sport
New Post has been published on https://thedailyrugby.com/international-match-is-lost-by-the-wallabies/
The Daily Rugby
https://thedailyrugby.com/international-match-is-lost-by-the-wallabies/
Another international match is lost by the Wallabies to rival sport
It was confirmed today that Wallabies fly-half Carter Gordon will switch from rugby union to rugby league due to the Melbourne Rebels’ financial crisis. The playmaker, 23, played in the team’s last-ever game last weekend as they were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Super Rugby Pacific playoffs. After 14 years of involvement, the team soon announced their removal from the league.
Gordon has chosen to join the Gold Coast Titans in the NRL, following in the footsteps of players like Mark Nawaqanitawase, despite having choices available to him. Titans Coach Des Hasler expressed his excitement to have Gordon join the team in a statement issued by his new team.
Wallabies Rugby
Carter has demonstrated strong competition in rugby, having represented his nation and participated in the World Cup. However, what really struck me was his willingness to push himself and accept the challenge of learning a new code.He is a confident player with skill. The 23-year-old says he can’t wait to challenge himself in the NRL after moving to the Gold Coast. News for The Daily Rugby
Gordon remarked, “I’m excited about the direction rugby league is taking and the positive vibe around the game.” “At 23, I believe I had to seize this chance right away. “I know this will be a tremendous task, and I have no illusions about it. “The professionalism that the Titans shown throughout our talks truly impressed me. “I’ve enjoyed playing rugby because it’s allowed me to represent my country, which I will always be grateful for.”
Another massive blow to Australian rugby, Gold Coast has pulled off a sensational signing coup with the addition of Wallabies five-eighth Carter Gordon to the team. The 23-year-old, who will play No. 10 for the now-defunct Melbourne Rebels, was a vital component of the Wallabies World Cup team in 2023 and will sign a contract with the Titans until the end of 2026.
Gordon, a Test winger from the NSW Waratahs, will join fellow World Cup standout Mark Nawaqanitawase in the NRL when he signs with the Sydney Roosters next year. Next season, Joseph-Aukuso Sua’ali’i will be playing rugby union instead of rugby league, having played with the Sydney Roosters.
Izaia Perese, a center from NSW, and Josh Kemeny, a potential backrower from Melbourne, were two additional players of the Australian side who made a record departure in the pool phase under Eddie Jones. They have both given up on Australian rugby to play overseas.
Gordon’s addition, according to Titans CEO Steve Mitchell, significantly increased the team’s depth on the wings. The Titans also have Tanah Boyd on their roster, but veteran playmaker Kieran Foran, whose contract expires at the end of this season, is anticipated to sign a new one.
Titans CEO Steve Mitchell told AAP, “It is very exciting for the Gold Coast Titans and very exciting for the game.” “The challenge of competing in the NRL is the next big chapter in his athletic career. He is undoubtedly one of the most exciting young stars in rugby union, both domestically and globally.
“Carter will be a fantastic asset as a utility and spine player. He gets to collaborate with Des Hasler and an amazing team. The fact that a talented current Wallabies player chose to participate in our campaign says a lot about Des and the values of this team.

2024 Super Rugby Pacific Semi Final Blues face to Brumbies in Eden Park
New Post has been published on https://thedailyrugby.com/blues-face-to-brumbies-in-eden-park/
The Daily Rugby
https://thedailyrugby.com/blues-face-to-brumbies-in-eden-park/
2024 Super Rugby Pacific Semi Final Blues face to Brumbies in Eden Park
The Blues are a professional rugby union side from New Zealand that are located in Auckland and compete in the Super Rugby league. From 1996 to 1999, they were known as the Auckland Blues. The NZRU founded the Blues, along with the other four Super Rugby clubs in New Zealand, in 1996.
One of the most successful teams in Super Rugby history, the Blues finished as finals in 1998 and 2022 and semi-finalists in 2007, 2011, and 2023. They also won the championship in its first two seasons, 1996 and 1997, and again in 2003. In addition, the squad competed in a Trans Tasman competition in 2021.
The Australian professional rugby union side, the ACT Brumbies, was founded in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory (ACT), and was simply known as the Brumbies from 2005 to 2022. The team plays Super Rugby and gets its name from the wild horses that live in the outskirts of the capital. Together with the Far South Coast and Southern Inland areas of New South Wales (NSW), the team represents the ACT.
The NZRU founded the Blues, along with the other Super Rugby clubs in New Zealand, to compete in the recently formed Super 12 league, which also included teams from South Africa and Australia. The five teams in New Zealand each represented a number of provincial unions: the Waikato Chiefs, who were neighbours, represented the Waikato, Bay of Plenty, King Country, Northland, and North Harbour unions, while the Blues represented the Auckland, Counties Manukau, and Thames Valley unions.
The Blues and Chiefs received half of the international delegates in the Auckland region since it was deemed unfair to have so many. The bulk of the Blues’ home games during this time were round-robin affairs held at Eden Park. News for The Daily Rugby
In order to create a third Australian franchise for the recently established Super 12 (now Super Rugby) tournament, the Brumbies were founded in 1996. The Brumbies, who were supposed to be made up of “rejects”—players who weren’t selected by the other two teams—were expected to play badly.
Since then, they have made seven final appearances and won three, enjoying greater success than all other Australian teams combined. Strong tactical kicking, set piece play, ball retention, and applying pressure to opponents in their own half are some of the Brumbies’ most well-known attributes. There are just two Super Rugby clubs with 200 victories, and that is the Brumbies.

The Rough lesson that the Blues gave the Brumbies during their most recent game
The Brumbies, who have not defeated the Blues at Australia’s iconic rugby graveyard since 2013, will be visiting Eden Park after losing their most recent match, 46-7, to the Aucklanders in April.
In the Brumbies’ worst-ever loss to the Blues, coach Stephen Larkham bemoaned the team’s lack of physicality. Alaalatoa understands his team needs to prevail physically in order to have any chance of reversing the situation.
And after winning seven straight games after that round-10 lesson, he is sure they can. The next week, the Brumbies defeated the Hurricanes, who were atop the table. During that run, they also defeated the Crusaders, the reigning champions, and the Highlanders, a Kiwi team.
Alaalatoa is certain that the Brumbies can make history if they can physically equal the Blues, despite the fact that no Australian team has ever won a finals match in New Zealand.
“Playing in the finals and experiencing what it’s like to play at Eden Park was probably the first time the boys were over to New Zealand last year and the year before,” he said on Monday. We will thus draw from the experiences of those lads who were present.
“The players on this current squad have been together for a number of years and were part of the last two years.” It will thus be quite beneficial for us to have the experience of competing in the semi-finals there.
The seasoned front-row player acknowledges that the Brumbies need to get much better at the scrum after being outclassed by the Blues in the set piece last time out.
“It was a challenging lesson,” Alaalatoa remarked. “We had to address that right away and carry it over for the remainder of the season, and I felt the boys did a great job picking up on it.”
Therefore, we are aware that it will happen, but much more so, we are aware of what we will bring. “We need to improve on that component of our previous performance. “Yet I have a lot of confidence because of how we’ve improved this year, how we’ve overcome setbacks, how the lads are becoming more open in meetings, and how we’re pushing each other in the training area. News for The Daily Rugby
“You can see the contribution of the guys outside of that who are really challenging and want to do their part for the jersey. It’s not just the 23 who are going to play.”
In the title game the following week, the winners will take on the team that emerged victorious from Saturday’s second semi-final between the Chiefs and Hurricanes in Wellington.

Italy will play the All Blacks at Juventus home ground

Italy will play the All Blacks at Juventus home ground
The Autumn Nations Series this year will pit the Azzurri against the All Blacks at Juventus’ home stadium, according to the FIR.  The fact that the game is taking place at a location rich in Italian history and significance is evidence of rugby’s rising stature and ascent in that nation. With several high-profile football matches held there and its association with greats like Alessandro del Piero and Zinedine Zidane, it has transformed into a sports temple.
Global superstars in music and entertainment have also performed at the stadium, drawing crowds inside to see performances by Madonna, U2, and Coldplay. It is envisaged that rugby’s entry into this arena would help the sport become more well-known in Italy and become more interwoven into the country’s larger sporting and cultural landscape.
Italian rugby has seen a growth in grassroots involvement over the past few years, accompanied by more successful age-grade teams. The senior squad is starting to see rewards from their efforts; their performances in the most recent Autumn Nations Series and Guinness Men’s Six Nations Championships have confirmed their status as strong competitors.
After an incredible season under new head coach Gonzalo Quesada, rising star Tommaso Menoncello was crowned this year’s Guinness Men’s Player of the Championship. Meanwhile, new defence coach Richard Hodges recently expressed his confidence in his ability to lead the team to new defensive heights.
Federugby.it will soon provide ticket information for Italy vs. New Zealand’s Autumn Nations Series match in Turin. In the days leading up to their match against the All Blacks at Allianz Stadium, the Azzurri will also play against Argentina and Georgia.
The All Blacks of New Zealand are a well-known sports brand that is not limited to professional rugby. Thus, Italy, rugby’s most improved tier one nation, has thrown open its red carpet for the men in black, especially because such a legendary brand is visiting their shores in November.
While the Stadio Olimpico, their usual home field, is a legendary location in and of itself, Italy will travel to the world-famous Allianz Stadium, the home of Italian powerhouse Juventus, to play the All Blacks.
Juventus, which is well-known for drawing the best names in international football, has won two UEFA Champions League crowns and 36 victories in Italy’s premier league, Serie A.
Italy, who just had a highly successful Guinness Six Nations season in which they won two games and claimed a draw to move up to eighth place in the World Rugby rankings, will be looking to carry on the great Italian athletic history at the location. News for The Daily Rugby
“The All Blacks are an icon of international sport, as is Juventus,” stated Marzio Innocenti, President of the Italian Rugby Federation, in reference to the test match.
“To be able to welcome them once again to our country and to be able to do so in the best sporting facility in Italy adds a new element to the Federation that we are building, day by day,” the President continued, paying tribute to the All Blacks.
“I would like to thank the local institutions, from the Region to the City Council, who have enthusiastically supported Italy’s return to Turin, as well as Juventus for making this deal possible by customising the facilities to our game.
“The Allianz Stadium match between Italy and the All Blacks will be a memorable occasion for Italian sport in general as well as the rugby community.”

Richard Wigglesworth elected into the Hall of Fame for Premiership Rugby
Wigglesworth, who was instrumental in the club’s success as a coach and player, started for Tigers in the 2022 Premiership final. Wigglesworth a seven-time Premiership winner, has participated in 322 Premiership games, setting a record most league appearances. “To be inducted into the Hall of Fame is a really special moment for me and my family,” stated Wigglesworth. I’m honoured to have received this recognition because I enjoyed participating in the Premiership for so many years. Gallagher has awarded Richard Wigglesworth, 2340 for the Leicester Tigers, with his induction into the Premiership Rugby Hall of Fame.
“I was very ambitious and wanted to win with my friends and support the teams that I played on. I just really loved what I did.” I consider myself fortunate to have the work I have now and to continue be involved with rugby. However, nothing can ever compare to giving it your all each week as a player and taking pleasure in the process as you go. Every club’s first title was always particularly meaningful. First, I won the title with all of my friends at the age of 21 with Sale Sharks, a northern team that was nearest to my hometown.
After nine years at Sale, I then made the bold decision to go to Saracens. From that South African influence, Sarries developed into a group of young English guys who had attended the same Academy. It was also incredible to defeat a team I played for one that hadn’t lost a championship in a long time while finishing it with the Leicester Tigers. “To top it all off, we packed so much into so little time to win the Premiership with Leicester, and we did so thanks to a remarkable turnaround under Steve Borthwick.”
“Richard is one of the most decorated players in Premiership Rugby history and is now seeking the same success as a coach,” stated Phil Winstanley, Rugby Director at Premiership Rugby. For news The Daily Rugby
“He set a record with 322 Premiership Rugby appearances, and given how long his career lasted at the highest level, I believe it will be some time before anyone approaches this number of games.”
“It’s incredible that you won seven Premiership titles with the Sale Sharks, Saracens, and Leicester Tigers, but it’s truly amazing that you did so fifteen years apart.”
“Richard is a fantastic guy off the pitch in addition to his incredible skill on it, and we are honoured to induct him into the Premiership Rugby Hall of Fame this year alongside Paul Sackey and Danny Grewcock.”

Super Rugby Pacific Highlanders v Reds Result Round Nine Clash
Everything that happened at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane as the Queensland Reds defeated the Highlanders. To take against the Reds, the Highlanders have selected a considerably rotated squad. All Blacks prop Ethan de Groot, who started last week’s loss to the Rebels off the bench, is back in the starting lineup. Lock Oliver Haig comes into the loose forwards at No. 6, while Captain Billy Harmon switches from openside flanker to No. 8.
James Arscott and Connor Garden-Bachop have taken Folau Fakatava’s and Jacob Ratumaitavuki-Kneepkens’ places on the bench and in the starting lineup, respectively. Ajay Faleafaga moves to the bench and is replaced by Cameron Millar in the No. 10 shirt. Jonah Lowe is injured and Tanielu Tele’a returns to centre field.
Highlanders 1-15: Ethan de Groot, Ricky Jackson, Saula Ma’u, Hugo Plummer, Pari Pari Parkinson, Oliver Haig, Sean Withy, Billy Harmon (c), James Arscott, Cameron Millar, Jona Nareki, Sam Gilbert, Tanielu Tele’a, Timoci Tavatavanawai, Connor Garden-Bachop.
Reserves: Henry Bell, Daniel Lienert-Brown, Rohan Wingham, Will Stodart, Nikora Broughton, Folau Fakatava, Ajay Faleafaga, Jacob Ratumaitavuki-Kneepkens.
Based in Dunedin, the Highlanders are a professional rugby union team from New Zealand that plays in Super Rugby. The Otago, North Otago, and Southland unions are represented on the squad, which was established in 1996 to represent the lower South Island in the recently established Super 12 tournament. The Scottish immigrants who established the areas of Otago, North Otago, and Southland in the 1840s and 1850s are credited with giving rise to the epithet “Highlanders.”
Throughout the 2011 Super Rugby season, Carisbrook in Dunedin served as their home field; on occasion, they also played at Invercargill and Queenstown. Forsyth Barr Stadium in University Plaza, Carisbrook’s successor, opened in time for the 2011 Rugby World Cup but after Super Rugby season, and the Highlanders moved in for the 2012 campaign. News for The Daily Rugby
They placed seventh at the end of the first season, then after winning just three of eleven games, they ended last in the second season. However, in the 1998, 1999 and 2000 seasons they qualified for semi-finals; hosted the 1999 tournament final against rival South Island team the Crusaders. They lost the game 24–19, and the Crusaders eliminated them once more the next year, this time in the semi-final. They would only place in the top four once again in the next fifteen seasons, in 2002. However, they defeated the Hurricanes at Westpac Stadium in 2015 to win the Super Rugby title.
Aaron Smith, a current Highlander, has participated in 176 games with the club in record time, while 47 other players have played in more than 50 games. With 866 lifetime points, Lima Sopoaga leads the Highlanders in scoring, while Waisake Naholo leads with 45 career tries. Billy Harmon is their current captain, while Clarke Dermody is their coach.
The Super 12 included five New Zealand clubs when the Highlanders franchise was established. The North Otago, Otago, and Southland provincial rugby unions came together to become the Highlanders, a franchise that originally played on the lower South Island of New Zealand and was known as the Otago Highlanders.
Gordon Hunter was the coach and John Leslie was the captain of the 1996 squad. On March 3, 1996, they played their debut Super 12 game at Carisbrook against the Queensland Reds, whom they beat 57–17. The Highlanders were leading the competition and unbeaten after three games. But the next week, they lost to Northern Transvaal 59–29 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in South Africa. They concluded the season seventh on the table, winning just two more games that season—at Carisbrook against Natal and at Lancaster Park against the Canterbury Crusaders.
The Highlanders’ least successful season to date was 1997. They only secured three victories and came in last in the competition.  Taine Randell was now their captain, while Glenn Ross served as their coach. Among their eight losses that season was a 75-43 setback against Natal in Durban. Gavin Lawless scored 50 points for Natal, setting a tournament record.Tony Gilbert took over as coach after their 1997 season ended in last place.
