Jerry Eisenberg, a longtime Hanna-Barbera artist, passed away last week. We were fortunate to have had the pleasure of working with him on some of our Scooby-Doo DTV films, where he worked as a storyboard artist. This drawing of Ruff and Reddy was drawn by Jerry and has hung in a place of honor in my home for many years.

---
Ruff and Reddy finally get the humanization treatment for the first time. They were Hanna-Barbera's first television characters, predating iconic figures like Huckleberry Hound, Yogi Bear, The Flintstones, The Jetsons, and Top Cat, who graced television during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Originally premiering on NBC in 1957, The Ruff and Reddy Show introduced audiences to a serialized storytelling format, with episodes forming multi-episode story arcs. This approach set it apart from later Hanna-Barbera productions.
The show followed the adventures of Ruff, a clever and steadfast cat, and Reddy, a good-natured but somewhat dim-witted dog. Unlike many rivalries between cats and dogs in cartoons of the era, Ruff and Reddy were portrayed as loyal friends and housemates. Each episode, approximately four minutes long, contributed to a larger thirteen-episode arc.
The Ruff and Reddy Show was also groundbreaking in its use of limited animation techniques, allowing for quicker production times and lower costs, an innovation that shaped television animation. In 2017, the characters were reimagined in a DC Comics miniseries, The Ruff and Reddy Show, as stand-up comedians navigating the 1950s entertainment industry.

The Toonies
Tumblr media
The name is a reference to "The Goonies" and while Ruff and Reddy were portrayed as kids in Jellystone, I can imagine Reddy being a teenager. As for Auggie, I'll have the kindness to let the audience pretend which gender this is.

HB Guardians: I drew Chopper in his male form because he is NOT a pretty woman but I did keep the ginger hair because it’s different

Meanwhile, imagine for a moment--
Kwicky Koala spending some time back in his native Australia on some remote stretch of Queensland coast between the Sunshine Coast (north of Brisbane) and the Tropic of Capricorn at Rockhampton, sipping on the local ginger beer infused with eucalyptus juice and lemon ...
Ruff and Reddy just trying to make up their minds over what to have at the local steakhouse buffet, trying all along not to annoy fellow diners (or what few there are, considering that it's at a slack part of the afterlunch) ...
Top Cat and clowder performing in glee club manner evenings at none other than the Original Farmer's Market in Hollywood just as the "blue hour" comes along ...
Orange Julius with added banana being a favourite with Magilla Gorilla, enough so that on one occasion, he downed no less than a half dozen chili cheese dogs and as many Orange Julius with banana, such being his appetite to the moment ...
The Banana Splits, as a publicity exercise, doing some swimming at The Land of Natura in Wisconsin Dells, and looking none the worse for their wet fur in seeking to reclaim their good name and repute as much as an impromptu "meet-and-greet" ...
The Skatebirds' Scooter, what with his fondness for skate skis, leading a group of cross-country skiiers in summer training likewise outfitted, and discussing his fondness therefor over a subsequent supper ...

REDDY, coming off a dive just experienced with Ruff, his feline companion: If I may just say there, Ruff, wasn't thst dive experience--fascinating? RUFF, trying to contain the excitement: I should say there, Reddy, that it WAS fascinating! How else could the feeling underwater be, come to think of it? REDDY, trying not to feign it: Beats me, Ruff....
