Dragons: Race to the edge is a literal pinball machine of villains.
First its Alvin, then he changes for the best, then Dagur who goes through an entire arc, then Viggo dies then doesn't. Then because a monstrous nightmare helped him, he's OK and didn't want to harm another dragon. (Yay arcs) Then Krogan gets revealed, only for Johann to be mastermind pulling the strings. Johann gets turned into a forever icicle.
Then Krogan gets killed by Drago, which sets the events of the second movie.
It's a pinball machine, but a fun one to watch!

Hiccup still gets a lot of criticism for his decisions in Httyd 2, but I feel like they make sense and it's because of the tv-shows.
He doesn't want to be chief?
Well, he just spent a whole year mapping the world outside of the Archipelago, that's a lot of freedom. So of course, he doesn't know who he is now and doesn't think his father's lifestyle fits with him.
And in that year, he almost did become chief when Stoick almost died. In that scene when Spitelout is sent out specifically to bring Hiccup home to succeed his dying father, they already call him chief! This, despite Hiccup's plea towards Spitelout to not say it.
Chiefdom for Hiccup means losing his father. (Which is exactly how he ended up becoming chief, too)
He thinks he can change Drago's Mind?
Of course, he does! Alvin switched sides, Dagur switched sides, Viggo saw dragons as something more. And let's not forget Stoick and his entire village, including Astrid and his friends.
In a way, he changed Mala's mind, too.
In a way, he changed the minds of the dragons about humans.
He tries to end a war by talking to a warmonger?
Again, of course, he does. He ended their war with the dragons, fought in a war with the Outcasts, then the Berserker, then the Hunters, then the Flyers.
Of course, he thinks he's just as capable of making the most responsible calls in war when he has fought in several ever since he was 15. This, although Stoick has decades more experience and actually met Drago before.
Not to mention that all of the bloodshed was on the side of the enemy, and RttE confirms this. Hunters and Flyers are dying in those battles.
If anything, Hiccup talking to Drago first is him giving Drago a chance to save himself and his men. Something Astrid pretty much confirms when she threatens Drago that he better not lay a hand on them or Hiccup and Toothless will blow his fleet to splinters.
Which, in the tv-shows, they do. And then Drago did end up dead at the end of the movie.

Another kid in the chat finished watching the series and we remembered, that I had a fucking theory and it fits the lore of the universe very well. And it concerns two of the most mysterious characters that we were not shown — Oswald the Agreeable (Dagur and Heather's father) and Viggo's grandfather (whom we named Ulric, and took the nickname from the book). I called it the Dragon Eye Saga and I would like to see a spinoff about this couple. The grandfather's fate is unknown, but I remember the moment with the discovery of the Dragon Eye. It was the Grimborn ship where in the captain's cabin there was a skeleton of a large man clutching the device. And also Viggo's words that the DE had been in their family for centuries (so he saw it, trivially in childhood or youth, and he knows how it works.) But why was it lost and he was looking for it? And Oswald hid the most important lenses for the DE in his family. That's why it seems like there's a connection between the two. The theory is that the two of them were able to decipher the lenses of the device, and perhaps they were not just allies, but friends.
And apparently they both understood the danger of this thing in the wrong hands. Which is why they decided to hide it, and the lenses. Some lenses were hidden in the Grimborns style — with traps and riddles, others in unusual places. The lenses were hidden, Oswald decided to keep one for himself, and give the other two to his children. Ulric kept the device itself with him. Apparently, towards the end of his life, he went on a voyage, leaving Viggo as his successor. But he did not return. The Reaper ran aground and Ulric died there, holding the Dragon Eye even after his death.
Oswald went to hide the most important lens, which belonged to him, and eventually suffered a shipwreck, after which he got stuck on Vanaheim and ended his life there far from his beloved children.
Perhaps a compelling reason to urgently hide DE and the lenses was the appearance of Drago Bludvist and his idea of an army of dragons. After all, an army needs a dragon king, and DE leads to him.

Ok ik I can be little slow, but did people notice that the branding tool that the dragon hunters threatened hiccup(/dagger) with yk the one they demonstrated on the bucket
Tumblr media
(Season 3 episode 1 enemy of my enemy)
Is the same branding mark/ scar that eret has in httyd2
Tumblr media
And ik when Krogan shows up, viggo and drago are slightly connected(kinda) but never meet. (rtte confirms that with viggo telling Hiccup about krogan's employer but not knowing who it was)

The gang’s names are under-appreciated, not just because they are amazing, but for the comedy potential.
They’re out here being named, Snotlout? Fishlegs? Ruffnut? Tuffnut? Hiccup?
While everyone else has normal names like Viggo, Ryker, Dagur, Heather, Johann, Drago, Mala and so on!
Can. You. Imagine. Being a villain, fighting these teenagers, being defeated, and utterly impressed, and then you ask for their names, thinking it’ll be something amazing like TORMOD THE GREAT, and then it’s… Fishlegs????? Fishlegs Justin Ingerman??
And the leader is HICCup? UHH???!! And his deadly beast is Toothless? Like, “NO??? No no no, I see teeth”

the fact that hiccup, despite being taller than the average viking height and tallest in his friend group, is actually still a runt when in the perspective of 'product of his giant parents', is hilarious
httyd1 hiccup: aww fml i'm so small and weak compared to my peers :(
httyd2 hiccup: my dad's almost 7 foot it counts ok
also that so he has something intimidating to overcome they keep making the villains massive. these people should be topping out before 6 foot

Dragon Hunter Infiltration Arc
Viggo had wasted no time after the pleasantries, questioning her on things she had not thought known by anyone. He held her gaze. If she looked away, she knew, it would be a weakness, an admission. She took a deep, shuddering breath. She looked to the floor. "The reasons for your suspicions are just... Sir." Heather mumbled as mist glazed her eyes. "I have, indeed, been acting out of line." Before her, sitting easy, Viggo smiled gently. "Why so, my dear?" "I have come here... I've joined the Hunters with ulterior motives." She clutched her skirt, watched as her pale fingers turned ghostly white at the knuckles; her breath hitched. "I've come to kill my brother."
Messy sketches + Value practice
A rare time that Heather is the A plot <3

I don't like any of the maps I've seen for HTTYD so i'm playing a puzzle game w all the locations. This is the 3rd version so far
Tumblr media
#httyd#how to train your dragon#httyd map#rtte#race to the edge#mm i already see things i wanna change lmao#the red circle is the are where the Red Death has control#not every dragon in there is under her control but all the dragons of her flock stay there so it's the area where dragon raids happen#i don't believe in the 3rd movie so there's no hidden world but if there WAS i'd put it there hence the ()#also i saw someone saying how funny itd be if hiccup's sarcastic narration of the 1st movie's opening scene was actually the names of place#hence ''freezing to death'' ''hopeless'' and especially ''the meridian of misery''#idk how i feel abt the bewilderbeast under berserker island so instead they're barely located in the red death's territory hence the lack o#raids#and since they're not in war w the dragons n don't get raided they have more people and can actually afford resources and time to things#like fighting other ppl and pillaging like actual vikings#the upper square is the map that berk&berserkers&freezing to death etc use#they're all p concerned w the dragon raids so there's not much energy put to exploring or interacting w Other ppl#n traders rarely go there#they're the weirdos who've settled too close to a dragon nest in the north#n the lower square is the map viggo has and where his Dragon Hunters mainly operate#im thinking of shifting that more to the right to put the rookery where the 'northern markets' currently are#also something that bothers me is that we never rly explore any normal villages#like we've got berk&the berserkers. then we've got uhh 2 dragon-friendly islands the dragon hunters and drago#like who is buying all that dragon product? who are the tribes of the other chieftains in the meeting drago burned down?#where is everyone???

The Use of Dragonskins (HTTYD/RTTE)
Tumblr media
Hello, my fellow Furians! Welcome to another article! Today, we'll be talking about dragonskins and their usage.
In the HTTYD books, dragonskins are used to make fireproof items and are even commonly used to make fireproof suits. It's also meant to be worn as a type of body armor. Either it can refute arrows or cuts, or it was used to defend against dragon fire (since in this world, Vikings used dragons as hunting companions and steeds of war like how one uses horses and dogs). According to "How To Twist A Dragon's Tale", the Lava-Lout Tribe were particularly famous and distinctive for always wearing dragonskin suits to protect them from fire and heat, since they live on a volcanic island.
In the TV series, it's quite different. There are no scenes that provide evidence that dragonskin have anti-fire properties. At best, Eruptadon saliva does that. While Buffalord saliva is the only known cure for Odin's Scourge. However, it's also true that there hasn't been any evidence AGAINST the dragonskins used by the Dragon Hunters and Flyers having anti-fire properties. Considering their occupations, it's logical to assume that the dragonskins they wear provide some if not complete protection against fire.
Interestingly, though, in the last two films, HTTYD 2 and HTTYD 3, there are clear signs of dragon scales and dragonskins being used as direct fire protection agents.
Also, the dragonskin gear that Dragon Hunters and Flyers wear must have anti-dragon protection since they keep returning in following episodes like Stormtroopers. Though that could just be your typical DreamWorks Dragons cloning technique. 😂
That being said, though, it kinda defeats the purpose of fire protection if most of your skin and flammable clothes are exposed to flame. 😂
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, unlike in the books, in the TV series (and in the films), dragonskins also have another purpose: a statement of status and fashion.
Aside from the fact that they look aesthetically pleasing to wear, it's also a show of one's prowess and status as a man and as a warrior. As Hiccup had even said in the first film:
"Killing dragons is everything around here. A Nadder head is sure to get me at least noticed. Gronckles are tough. Taking down one of those would definitely get me a girlfriend. A Zippleback? Exotic. Two heads, twice the status. Then, there's the Monstrous Nightmare. Only the best Vikings go after those."
As such, in Archipelagoan society, even if we discount differences between the Inner Isles and the rest of the Archipelago, there is a hierarchy or meritocracy that is based on what dragons you kill, and how many of them. And it's also based on how difficult these dragons are to kill. Speaking of which, Mildew was mentioned to have been an excellent dragon slayer in his younger days.
In fact, the "Deadly Dozen" who pursue and hunt the Gang in S5's "Dawn of Destruction" and the two-part "Wings of War" episodes are all wearing dragonskins from these dragons, signifying their status and prowess as elites.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hiccup goes on to saying this:
"No one has ever killed a Night Fury. That's why I'm going to be the first."
Night Furies were considered by many to be the ultimate prey — the coveted prize to fame, glory, and fortune. While no one on Berk had ever seen a Night Fury let alone slain one, Hiccup was desperate to kill one in order to be accepted as a Viking like the rest of his community. (Only for him to wimp out in the end and become friends with one. lol 😂😉) Had he gone through with it, he would've had a luxurious dragonskin that would've boosted his status among the many famous Viking heroes in Archipelago and Berkian history.
Interestingly, in HTTYD 3, Grimmel, the villain, and a contrasting portrayal of what Hiccup could've become, says this:
"When I was a boy and I came up on a Night Fury, I killed it where it slept. That simple act of courage made me a hero in my village."
Strangely though, he doesn't wear anything to show his prowess or achievements. For somebody who boasts about having practically slain every Night Fury in existence (a declaration that I doubt in itself since it's technically impossible in this era), he doesn't wear anything to represent that, like a Night Fury dragonskin cloak, or outfit, or Night Fury claws or teeth. Nothing. Just... boring old leather. 🙄
However, it's different with Drago from HTTYD 2. As you can see from the picture below, he's wearing a cloak of dragonskin which he uses as both a status statement and also as something to shield him from dragonfire.
Tumblr media
Of course, as much as I'd like to declare that to be Night Fury skin, there's no proof of it being so, and could easily be some other type of dragon. But if it is, it could be the skin of an older Night Fury. It looked darker in the film, but whatever.
So in conclusion, dragonskins are used for their anti-fire properties (to protect them from dragonfire and from fire in general), as a fashion statement, and most importantly as a status symbol that showcases their prowess and accomplishments as warriors. Dragonskins make good tent material, apparently, as evidenced by the Dragon Hunters.
I hope this was somewhat enlightening. It certainly was for me. Thank you for reading, and see you in the next article!
Long Live the Night!
