"Everything about [Jean Kay] has always been very fine and intricate. She had a ballet education and it was very easy to tell when you saw her on screen. Height, shoulders back, extended neck, the steps she’d take. And so we did everything to accentuate that. No necklaces, at all, because we didn’t want any bulk [there]. The earrings had to be very small, or long, to follow the line of the neck. No bracelets because directors would want to show her wrists and her hands, how careful they were. No rings. If her hair wasn’t up then it was pushed back. It was the same with clothing. We steered away from patterns that were too bold or garish and focused on shape instead. Shape and movement, that’s what it was. Everything was tailored, so she always looked trim and tall on screen - even if she wasn’t wearing heels, and she often didn’t in case the leading men were shorter than her [...] And after all that, we did the complete opposite if she was playing a funny sort of woman, one who maybe didn’t quite fit it.
