TWO REMARKABLE WRITERS

1. Fernando Ma. Guerrero

Biography: Fernando María Guerrero Ramírez was a Spanish Filipino, poet, journalist, lawyer, politician, and polyglot who became a significant figure during the Philippines' golden period of Spanish literature, a period ranging from 1890 to the outbreak of World War II in 1940. He was born on May 30, 1873 and he died on June 12, 1929.

Contribution: He was a member of the First Philippine Assembly representing Manila's 2nd district, the Academia Filipina (Philippine Academy) and also became a leader of the Municipal Board of Manila. He was also a correspondent to the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language in Madrid. His poetry book Crisálidas was published in 1914.

2. Manuel H. Bernabe

Biography: A poet, linguist, and politician, Manuel Bernabe was born on February 17, 1890 to Timoteo Bernabe and Emilia Hernandez of Paranaque, Rizal.

He studied at the Ateneo de Manila where he finished his Bachelor of Arts degree with high academic standing. In 1910, Manuel's first paem was published in the Renacimiento Filipino. In 1912, he translated Virgil's Aenid from Latin to Spanish. In 1913, he received an award for his poems The Hymn to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, El Zapote, and España en Filipinas.

Contribution: He taught Spanish in different schools such as: Far Eastern University, Philippine Law School and Institute de Espanol at Colegio de San Juan de Letran. In 1951, he accompanied President Elpidio Quirino on the latter’s state visit to Spain. He joined the world of politics, as a representative to Congress of the first district of Rizal.

Liam is back and in excellent form! I have missed chatty Liam, he is such a chill pleasure to virtually hang out with. He went live to answer questions about his performance and joke around. He trolled fans in his response to a question about collabs- “I’d love to do one with hmm... Niall... and Zayn... and Harry and Louis,” he teased, and joked that “they’re here! Behind this curtain! Haha no… we could have put them in virtually! Probably would have gotten cease and desist letters from their managers…” and considered who would send the first letter. “Zayn,” he giggled, but then added that in fact his next upcoming collab is “with myself, tonight!” (hmm sounds dirty when you put it like THAT Liam!) And about the performance? Liam agreed that it’s very confusing but said he’d make things easier on us by naming virtual Liam; he’s Kelvin. He said he (Liam not Kelvin) has “been away for a while, been having a bit of time” and then immediately added that in fact he’s been rehearsing and working on this performance a lot but that “it’s the only thing I’ve been doing.” He said IDK when is LP2 coming- “when I can get to LA and work” (because he doesn’t like writing on zoom), that he’s currently working on a song for a film but that he can’t tell us anything about it but that it’s with some old friends he’s known since he was 17, they were the first people 1D worked with, that he’d consider making a visual album, “maybe a cartoon or something… maybe even an NFT, who knows!” A man in touch with what the fans want, always (well except for the NFT thing), he fulfilled my wish and demonstrated making faces to program Kelvin, and he shared a picture of his mo-cap feet like SEE they look like TINY SNAKES right? And then asked people to trend tinysnakes and the fans dutifully obliged. Look out you guys, it’s a tiny snake habitat!

And the performances? Well first there was the avatar-only one and I finally understand why he kept saying he’d be anywhere you wanted him in your house, sorry- I think other people got it all along and I just… didn’t… but anyway it’s like a pokemon go thing were tiny Liam Kelvin is just perched on your dirty laundry or table or whatever you point your phone at. ANYWAY, virtual Liam is awkward and weird and not a very good lipsyncer, but real Liam sounds amazing and looks terrific and the contrast only draws more attention to how well Liam holds the space on stage and how good he looked, in particular when they put the avatar and Liam together for the main event. He/ they sang Midnight, and it sounded great and was a big hit besides, the papers loved him as the show opener and were into the gimmick.

Louis’ new friend Sergio Aguero talked about DMing with him on his recent twitch stream (Sergio’s). Being Argentinian he ofc just starts talking to him about mate (the Argentinian tea, not bros, pronounced like mah-tay) which I have to say is dead on brand for every Argentinian I have ever met; you think Louis is serious about his Yorkshire but he’s probably met his beverage obsessed match here! Anyway so Sergio is like do you like mate, and “check out my tea stuff” (and sends him a picture of the traditional gourd and straw drinking apparatus) and Louis is like “idk what that is mate” which is hilarious because what it is… is mate… which is spelled the same… which Sergio tries to explain to his viewers but anyway yeah that’s the tea! Lol. He said that Louis has reached out a while back (but he didn’t know who Louis was until he was like “I was in One Direction”) and invited Sergio to a footie match in Portugal (to play with Louis’ famous people league team we’ve heard about before I bet) but he couldn’t go and they just started chatting now, after Louis messaged again; Louis was in Mexico but they’re gonna hang out when he’s back in the UK, and Sergio will give him some mate! LMAO OF COURSE he will. Louis will absolutely hate it but I would LOVE to see him try to be nice about some unfamiliar bitter herb water served in a gourd that sounds like PURE GOLD tbh.

Anne Marie talked about the Niall teaser pic for their collab. She said she’d wanted to work with him because “I just love his voice and he’s Irish, you know, he’s hot”, lol, and that “ he was just playing guitar, playing piano, and I was like wow you’re actually talented cause you never know who’s actually talented these days” and “we wrote like three songs and they were all brilliant.” Will we ever hear the other two songs?? I mean I’m fine to start with just the one, anytime now, but something to consider...

Falling won an ADG Award, the members of the Art Director’s Guild apparently feeling that Harry’s leaky piano was better than the competition, Taylor Swift’s leaky piano, and the tabloids picked up on twitter chatter about Harry going blond for My Policeman (because the character in the book is blond some people think he will bleach his hair) and then everyone talked about it more because the tabloids said so IT MUST BE TRUE. UM, are you even hearing yourselves? They don’t know shit people this is a feedback loop here.

Anthologies and journals have been published, like the Journal of Hip-Hop Studies and the Smithsonian Anthology of Hip-Hop and Rap. Kendrick Lamar won a Pulitzer Prize for music for his album DAMN. The genre has thrived, and so has the research, Kubrin said.

Nitasha Tamar Sharma, an associate professor at Northwestern University, teaches a class and has published a book focusing on the racial and gender politics of hip-hop culture. The course traces the foundations of hip-hop, from its 1970s beginnings in the South Bronx, and explores its influence in politics, race relations, gender and sexuality issues, and other aspects of American culture.

Sharma said studying hip-hop benefits students because they are able to see the effects of the music as they unfold. Rap lyrics shape current events, she said, like a “soundtrack” to Black Lives Matter, #MeToo, and other modern movements. Hip-hop reaches students where they are, so they can learn more about the world around them, she said.

“All kinds of young Americans come to know themselves and understand the black experience through professors and teachers who are not in the academy, but who are rappers,” Sharma said…

Lashana Lynch (Capitana Marvel) es Nomi, una nueva agente ‘doble cero’ de MI6 cuya misión se cruza con la de Bond en la historia de Sin tiempo para morir. Ben Whishaw (Paddington) está de regreso como Q, el icónico proveedor de equipo especial para los agentes del MI6. Naomie Harris (28 días después, Rampage: Devastación) también vuelve a su rol como Eve Moneypenny, secretaria de M. Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) es otro de los veteranos de la franquicia. Él interpreta al agente de la CIA y amigo de Bond, Felix Leiter. Christoph Waltz (Bastardos sin gloria, Django desencadenado) está de nuevo interpretando a Ernst Stavro Blofeld, jefe de SPECTRE y villano de la anterior entrega. Está en custodia del MI6 y no sabemos que rol jugará en la trama. Ralph Fiennes (Harry Potter) es M, cabeza de MI6 desde la muerte de su predecesora en Skyfall. Ana de Armas (Blade Runner 2049, Entre navajas y secretos) es Paloma, una atrevida nueva agente de la CIA.

¿Quiénes están detrás de cámaras en Sin tiempo para morir? El director de esta entrega de la saga de James Bond es Cary Joji Fukunaga, principalmente reconocido por producir y dirigir la excelente temporada 1 de True Detective. También dirigió la película para Netflix Beasts of no Nation, protagonizada por Idris Elba, y la serie ‘retro-cyberpunk’ Maniac para la misma plataforma.

¿Sin tiempo para morir es la última película del agente 007 con Daniel Craig como James Bond? Este filme está siendo fuertemente publicitado como la última película de ese actor en el rol. Pero no es la primera vez que dicen eso.

Eso lo convenció de volver para completar el arco de su personaje.

Todo parece indicar que esta vez Daniel Craig sí le dijo adiós al personaje.

hello. it’s me. mickey. the following story was created by me in 9th grade and is now being posted because I made the reckless proclamation “if this video gets 200 likes I’ll post the serious, gritty detective story I wrote about the duolingo owl in 9th grade

i would to clearly state that this story was written IRONICALLY. even at 14 i had some braincells.

CWs: implied crime syndicate, cops, gun violence, kidnpping, blood, general violence and the motherfucking duolingo owl. it does not end well.

SPANISH OR VANISH

“New one, Sands.” Lieutenant James set a beefy file on Theo’s desk. “Yessir.” A coy smile rested on his face as the young detective looked up from his third cup of coffee. The lieutenant raised an eyebrow.  “Three missing. No connection. Better work fast before homicide calls dibs.”  “Yessir.” Theo grinned. “Oh and Sands?”  “Yeah?” “Get some sleep tonight. That’s an order.” 

There was no ‘yessir’ to this one. Theo only huffed and waved his boss off, flipping through the folder with routine precision. 3 vics, no relation. Olivia Shirley, Jason Abbertson, Bethany Brooks. A professional dancer with the royal ballet, an independent film writer, and a high profile CEO. No relatives in common and, at first glance, no one who’d know all three of them. The precinct door clicked shut at the Lieutenant made his exit with a quiet “Get some sleep Sands!” 

A couple minutes later, the gurgling of the coffee pot rung out the beginning of another all-nighter. 

TWO WEEKS LATER

It was a long shot. The vics only had one thing in common, an app on their phones. Duolingo, a popular program used to help one learn languages. All of them had been months off lessons but kept the app on their phone Theo’d known people who used it to help squeeze out a pass in high school french.

Only now did he realize how long it’d been since he spoke to them. 

It should’ve been a walk in the park. A quick recon of an abandoned warehouse, with backup on standby. Theo was smart, and a good shot. No one was meant to be there, worst case scenario there as a chase. 

That was not the worst case scenario. 

He didn’t plan for his phone to ring, no one called him. He didn’t plan on the warehouse being a base of operations, one of two people at most. And, if Theodore Sands knew one thing, it was that he sure as hell didn’t plan on getting shot. 

“Detective Sands?! Where the HELL are you?!-” “Lieutenant James I-” Theo’s scolding was cut short when a bang went off and pain erupted through his side. He instinctively pushed his hand to the place, only to draw it back when warm blood coated his fingers. “Fuck fuck fuck- no-” He staggered, drawing his own gun. “Who’s- who’s the-” What was meant to be a threat came out as a gurgled cough. It hurt too much to speak. 

He dropped to a knee. There were footsteps, heavy boots on metal pushing their way towards him. Then there was a sweet cloth over his face. Theo kicked and pushed against his attacker, floundering to bring his gun around to them, but his strength was leaving with his blood. 

“En Espanol.” A gruff voice hissed in Theo’s ear. What? That doesn’t make- Shut up Sands just get out of here-

A knee hit his ribs and, with a pained squeak, his world slipped away.

Detective Theodore Sands awoke in a dark room. He was sat against cold metal, ropes digging into his wrists and ankles. A quick jerk told him the knots were good.  Did I just get fucking kidnapped? I think I’ve just been fucking-

With that, metal door slid open. It was too dark to make out anything other than a large figure... avian? No, that made no sense. It was just the blood loss. The figure was holding holding... something. Something also large. 

“Who the hell-” Theo’s question went silent as whatever the thing was struck his shoulder. 

“Try it again.” The visitor leaned in, and Theo could clearly make it out. Whoever it was wore a large mask of the bird from the app cover. Wait- was that a mask? Is a mask meant to extend... everywhere? No. No that’s not how things work. Focus Theo, you’re just low on blood is all. But those eyes looked so real-

“Try it again.” The owl repeated, dragging its weapon down the side of Theo’s face. “This time in Spanish.”
