Genuine With You - Kalim

Author Notes: Someday, I will feel comfortable writing Kalim, but today is not yet that today. In all seriousness though, I wrote this while listening to "Romantic Flight" from the How to Train Your Dragon OST. I really can't quite decide how I feel about this fic, but I sort of thought it was time for me to post it. As per usual, reader is gender neutral. I hope you enjoy!

It wasn’t the first time you’d taken Kalim’s hand to join him on a magic carpet ride through the night sky. But something about it felt different this time. 

When your hand had slipped into his warm one and he’d tugged you through your window and onto the surprisingly soft fabric, you’d felt strangely shy. 

Kalim seemed like his normal self, though, if perhaps a little quieter, as he steered the carpet to take you up higher until you were sailing above the clouds and could see the moon in all its pale glory.

You wrapped your arms around yourself in a feeble effort to protect yourself from the cool night air, “Does it ever get old?”

Your eyes were stuck on the moon even as Kalim looked over at you with a surprised expression that soon melted into one of understanding, “Never. It’s just as magical everytime.”

You smiled, oddly comforted by his words. Somehow, being up in the sky with Kalim by your side made everything feel just a little bit simpler. Your problems seemed distant and far away, with even the school itself appearing tiny.

But perhaps distance had a way of putting things into perspective. While NRC often seemed larger than life, it was just a small part of this great, big world.

Amusingly, you never felt closer to anyone than when you were with Kalim, sailing through the sky high over the sleeping campus. There was a strange serenity, and though Kalim was always joyful, his happiness seemed easier and more relaxed when it was just the two of you.

It wasn’t like you thought he put on for others, but he did seem a little more genuine when it was just you and him. After all, it was only when it was just you and Grim around that you’d ever truly heard him voice any sort of complaints.

“It’s funny; you’re easy to be around,” Kalim’s voice interrupted your musings and spoke your thoughts aloud. You turned to look at him with no small amount of surprise, and he had the good grace to look slightly embarrassed, “I know it's an odd thing to say…. But I really do feel that way.”

You felt a smile creep onto your face at his words, feeling both touched and relieved that he felt the same way. “It’s not odd; I feel the same way about you.”

Now it was his turn to stare at you with wide, disbelieving eyes that had you letting out a laugh, “Is that really so surprising?”

He let out an almost sheepish chuckle and actually nodded, startling you even as he began to explain, “Yeah, it is. A lot of people seem to think they have to put an act around me because of who I am. Even Jamil….” 

He trailed off, looking down as the smile on his face faded at his friend’s name. You’d known for quite some time that the events of winter break…. Jamil’s overblot was still weighing heavily on Kalim’s mind.

And though you entirely understood why that was the case, it pained you that everything that had happened during that time still bothered him so much. But you had no words to comfort the young man, even though you desperately wanted to. So instead, you decided to distract him by continuing on with your previous vein of thought.

“I’ve never felt that way,” You responded honestly and almost immediately regained Kalim’s attention. He no longer looked as sorrowful as before, and the longer you continued speaking, the happier he looked.

“I’ve always thought you’re one of the most comfortable people to be around at this school. I’ve never felt like I needed to be wary or put on an act around you. I can just… exist.” You glanced back at him, a smile on your face as you awkwardly lifted a shoulder.

“You just strike me as a really genuine guy, and I guess I want to be just as genuine with you as you are with me.”

It was like your words had opened some sort of door for Kalim. His eyes shone with both unshed tears and joy, and the next thing you knew, all the cold air that had been blowing around was blocked by his body as he tugged you into a tight embrace.

Because, despite the fact that Kalim was a carefree boy who seemed to do little work, he was by no means small or weak.

You let out a tiny, half-startled laugh as you wrapped your arms responsively around him and received a tiny squeeze in return as you reciprocated his affection.

“Thank you, Y/n; that means so much to me.” The young man leaned bac and you wished you’d had time to brace yourself for the unadulterated affection that shone in his garnet-colored eyes.

“I feel the same way. It’s easy being with you, and I’m so glad you’re here. Even if you aren’t originally from Twisted Wonderland, you mean the world to me.”

He held your hands in his, maintaining eye contact in a way that felt incredibly meaningful, even though you could never read the myriad of emotions that floated through his gaze, though you did catch a few.

Gratitude, honesty, joy, and pure, unfiltered love.

looong Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Vesperia rambling incoming:

I was chatting with my buddy about Tales of Vesperia and Tales of Symphonia and idk by what miracle this could ever happen, but I truly wish someday Bandai Namco could make a TRUE remake of Tales of Symphonia but with Tales of Vesperia's cel shade graphics

Because so far, all "remakes" are just more or less good ports from what I read/ saw? And TOV still holds up to this day, even 20+ years after even if the animation is a liiiittle stiff it' still works, but yeah TOS could really have a fantstic revamp

I want her so bad to experiement this journey too, but I totally get it that the graphics are a turn off... Which is also so sad because to me they still feel cute and I grew up with them OTL

idk... I understand TOS isn't necessarily the most insane RPG out there, same with Baten Kaitos but they have their own identity and amazing writting and complex stories and charming characters aaa even 20+ years later and I still hold these games in my heart and still listen to their OST, it really feels like magic

It's not like today where you have to constantly play daily for grinding or worry about being tempted to buy micro items in the shop with real money, it was a one time payment and one shot story and had an end... And that's what made it great too imo... if that makes sense, idk what I'm saying anymore, I guess I just miss so much how things used to be haha

Where games had more soul and personnality and passion behind it and ofc you still have that today but i feel it's... Rarer and back then I feel it was still experimental but that's what made it so great, now there are so many copy cats and it feels like a race to which one can be the next lottery... and I know they're all companies BUT LIKE at least I could feel my money was well spent you know?!

Now it's feels like, "we have your money AND you have shitty rushed half-baked product, you're welcome"

If only Llyod could have made it into Super Smash Bros Melee at the time, I feel it could have helped the Tales of popularity even more OTL I remember reading somewhere he was considered to be added to the roaster but maybe it was rumors too... But the thought of it is so cool. I rly don't think it's for nothing TOV and TOS keep getting so high in popularity polls when it comes to general Tales Of games, those two are really memroable and beautiful.

TOS almost feels like the blueprint for TOV to me, so they are very similar but different enough as well. I must have played TOS on my gamecube at least 10 times in my whole life and everytime my gameplay reaches 60h-80h+hours, it's just so much fun everytime

aaa but yeah.. all that to say I just wish it could get the remake of a lifetime so more poeple could experiment it too OTL I don't think it'll ever happen but yeah.... If only if only if only...

This show gets a little crazy, but the acting is top tier, and the ensemble cast is one of my favorites ever. (Also, the OST is my new most beloved.)

LBFAD is the most inspiring series I have ever watched and here is why…

Although Love Between Fairy and Devil (LBFAD) only caught my eye on Netflix in December 2023, I’m so glad it did and that I didn’t miss out on this stunning and thought-provoking masterpiece. It is the most inspiring series I have ever watched for many reasons. Aesthetically, I found the beautiful 4K production quality as enjoyable as high-budget productions such as Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones. I frequently felt the need to pause and admire the well-designed sets, and exquisitely detailed costumes of even minor characters. The acting is superb across the board, and the leads act and respond very naturally to each other. The long hair of male characters is especially well-done, falling naturally with subtle highlights and looks real. All these details breathe life into this fantasy world and make it very realistic.

Every line of each song from the phenomenal OST is brimming with hidden meanings related to the series, adding lots of additional context! The artwork created for the opening and ending sequences is also full of meaning (minor spoilers ahead). Take, for example, the last picture where the OTP are sitting on a boat in the Oblivion River, the junction between their two tribes, the male lead has removed his crown and hence his responsibilities at least for the moment, and they are watching the sunrise together for the rest of eternity after the close of the series (sigh!)

Every single character of note in the series goes through profound character growth, the only exception being the abstract ultimate villain Taisui. Even the secondary villains and dictator of Shuiyuntian have grown and changed their perceptions by the end. It made me believe that anyone is capable of opening their minds and bettering themselves. Both lead and side characters are repeatedly faced with overwhelmingly bleak choices and heartbreaking challenges, especially in the last ten episodes. Yet every time, they show courage, sacrifice and selfless love that is amazing and very inspiring.

It is rare to find this kind of poignance in any production. I used to find Game of Thrones inspiring due to Daenerys freeing the world of slavery…until Season 8 happened. LBFAD tops Game of Thrones in this regard by freeing two distinct realms from conflict. The actions of the OTP break through a hundred millenia of mutual hatred and relentless conflict between their people with no end in sight, to create a new dawn of lasting peace. LBFAD reminds me of Lord of the Rings in terms of its cinematographic beauty and themes of never losing hope and prevailing over overwhelming odds. However, the stronger focus of LBFAD on the lead couple’s development and on creating multidimensional villains and side characters made it, for me, more engaging to watch.

The world-building and depth of characters has many layers in LBFAD, to the extent that much of the context was clear to me only in retrospect on rewatching the series and on deep reflection. The fast pace of the series also means that a lot of action occurs off-screen in between scenes. There are no filler scenes, there is no room for them. Every scene adds new plot twists and depth to characters, making the series highly addictive.

I am not a native mandarin speaker, and came to realise how beautiful the language is only on encountering LBFAD and its OST. It inspired me to learn mandarin, which makes rewatching the series highly enjoyable as I am able to pick up new nuances. I’m embarrassed to be late to watch LBFAD after its release in August 2022, but have thoroughly enjoyed the posts on Tumblr from fellow fans, including enthralling artwork, meta and links to fanfiction. It has encouraged me to post on Tumblr myself. I have started to post my interpretations of artwork, mandarin names, xianxia concepts, and story-format reflections on each episode. I am thrilled to be a part of this wonderful community!

🤓 Regarding the Eldar and Sexy Sex | Textual Analysis of the Laws and Customs Among the Eldar within Tolkien's Lore

A.K.A Let the elves be horny. Textually, there is no reason they can't if we're creative.

Notes: Tone varies between scholastic and sarcastic and back again. Rated mature for use of language only. Sexual activities not described.

The concept I am analyzing: An unfinished Tolkien work, an in-universe essay, Laws and Customs Among the Eldar, describes the elven view of marriage vows which cannot be broken. In sum: Some have interpreted this text as saying that Elves can not/will not have sexual activity (“bodily union”) outside marriage.

The concept I have landed on: “Bodily union,” as described in this unpublished text can be interpreted as an intentional act that elven couples choose to perform. The term is not a catch-all for any or all types of sexual contact. In sum: From my close reading of the text, I interpret that Elves can and could engage in a variety of sexual activities without creating marriage vows if they wished to do so.

finished datv - this is pretty long, oops

[shoutout to bystander ghostzzy who witnessed the hit and run that was this game.]

well. the game felt without teeth, no bite. datv was wrought by a long dev-cycle, a slew of firings, and several rewrites, but i put cynicism aside because i genuinely wanted to give it a chance. unfortunately, it started going downhill pretty quickly from there.

i want to be fair, so i will start with my personal positives:

-robust character customization

-the locations were very beautiful, there were times where i just wanted to stop and soak up the visuals

-the actual gameplay was very fluid and quick, and the rhythm once you find it was fun 

-i liked the solas memories, and some more insights into felassan

-i liked that your character could be explicitly trans, but it was so jarring to hear the words trans and non-binary in this setting. i think they did it so there would be no room for plausible deniability, but it still felt so out of place. we understood what it meant when dorian said he preferred the company of other men instead of using more modern terminology. also if someone misgendered me and started doing pushups i would feel so embarrassed for them.

-there were moments where i did feel endeared to characters, even if briefly

now onto the stickier points.

i can not get over the lack of worldstates. it also puts such a sour taste in my mouth that they waited so long to announce there wouldn't be any. it gives veilguard the feeling of being grafted on.

pacing was weird, companion quest beats were at times out of place. some moments did not feel adequately built up or often had us going "that's it?"

man, oh man, do i miss trevor morris' touch. years later i still listen to the dai ost for drawing or walking/biking, and i just do not feel the same compulsion for datv's score.

the chantry has always been a presence in these games, and they're just gone. they were practically breathing down your neck in games previous - where are they now?

i was expecting to be able to go to minrathous' "high town" so to speak. we don't see any slaves or any other magisters. we don't see the black divine. it feels like they were afraid to broach the subject. after years of talking up how corrupt and hard it is to navigate tevinter life, it's disappointing to not see it. additionally it was disappointing to not explore an actual rivaini city.

major lore reveals were treated with such a blase attitude. perhaps it is the ten years of anticipation, but the way it was presented was done so quickly and no one seemed to have much of a reaction.

i hated the waves of faceless enemies that were just evil for the sake of evil. the evanuris’ motivations just didn’t feel compelling. power for the sake of power, and nothing else. was also deeply disappointed in the lack of dread wolf elven movement and the cutting of espionage plots. wish we saw more groups aligning themselves with him, even if he was only just using them. it would have been interesting interacting with an antagonistic group that wasn't outright evil.

choices (or lack thereof)

i sure wish we had the ability to make more difficult choices throughout the game and to have to carry the weight of them. seeing the ruined base and the aftermath of a dragon attack was neat, but the decision itself felt hollow. having to wait until the point of no return to get anymore just made the lack of meaningful decisions before then more obvious.

izzy asked one of the best questions ever. why is rook in charge?

the other protagonists of the dragon age games were very clearly thrust into their role. there's a blight, a betrayal, and the warden and alistair are the only ones who can do something about it. da2 didn't have world ending stakes, but we were clearly following hawke and their contained story. the inquisitor has the anchor and many eyes on them. i think they wanted rook to be just some guy, but it just feels so strange. can't get past the why them feeling.

the game tries to posture rook and solas as equals, a mirror unto the other, but i didn't feel it. other than the faction blurb we start off with, rook is not given any other difficult decisions in which sacrifice is incurred (minrathous/treviso doesn't feel earned to me). the narrative is constantly reminding us that solas got his hands dirty in the pursuit of a goal, doing whatever it takes by any means necessary to achieve it. you would think they would give us more opportunities to make more challenging decisions.

the factions could have been more morally dubious, instead of this weird conflict-free sheen they all have. they all get the sparkling-eyed-rebel retcon. it feels like they’re trying to recapture the vibe of origins, but it shakes out differently. origins gives you the context of your character’s place in the world, and veilguard doesn't. there is no meaningful change we could make within the factions themselves. they feel redundant.

i like decisions where you really have to chew on what’s being offered to you. it doesn’t have to be between being a perfect angel and the mustache-twirlingly evil option. i didn't mind the minrathous v. treviso decision in theory, but it felt too soon. too uneven. 

that in turn makes the replayability factor questionable as well. where are the major differences in choices? games previous you could play fully-fleshed out characters with enough variance to be distinct from each other. rook is just rook. no matter how you shake it. 

companions

the found-family dynamic feels inauthentic, more forced-family. many moments of sentimentality/opening up feel completely unearned. it takes the fun out of getting to know the companions when they are ready to spill their hearts out from jump. i do miss that we can't be blunt or just sometimes outright mean to our companions or the world at large.

grossly lacking in character reactivity. part of the fun of dragon age is being presented with a choice, and experiencing your companions' various povs. even those who you get along with may have wildly different ideas and philosophies than you do. 

there is no way you could miss out on any companions, just refuse to recruit them, get them kicked out, or have them leave autonomously. no one challenges you or your world view, and you can’t really do the same back. the companion quests got tedious after a certain point, and it quickly got exhausting when the bulk of them devolved into rook playing therapist. negatively impacting your companions isn’t something you do by choice, it’s only something that occurs with inaction. which, in a what's-supposed-to-be a choice-driven rpg, is a pretty boring way to negatively affect your companions’ stories.

maybe it’s misplaced nostalgia, but dao-dai companions were so human. sometimes their worldviews clashed with each other or your pc's, or they made terrible mistakes, and you had to decide whether or not you would stand by them or turn away from them. they had a choice to stand by or turn away from you.

in datv there is little friction.  there is no human complexity. it’s impossible to get on anyone's bad side. they are seemingly always agreeable. they don't have uncomfortable or ugly facets to them. they don't feel like real people with their own sense of right and wrong. but we also don't have many situations where their values can be challenged. and what are the consequences? slower level ups? 

taash's personal questline bothered me so bad. when a character's whole arc is about how they want to escape the binarism of gender, it comes off pretty condescending when, in practically the same breath, you enforce a binary choice on their culture. the choice between qun vs. rivaini comes off even more insidious when the qunari have been explicitly referred to as "islamic borg." it's implied that the non-qun choice is the "better" option. to have that juxtaposed side by side makes it that much more insulting. people have been critiquing the depiction of the qunari for over a decade at this point, so it's disheartening that they haven't paid attention to that criticism, to say the least.

lucanis. the world's softest beige-est pillow. he probably suffers the worst from flanderization - i started getting irritated with him and all his cafelitos. i expected spite to be a much more challenging character, but really it just felt like making sure the kid you’re babysitting doesn’t run out into the street. 

i think the climax of emmrich's questline was the first character specific decision i actually really liked. i liked that neither choice was the "wrong" choice, if that makes sense. it reminded me of the cole spirit/human decision in inquisition.

neve's character arc felt thrown together, kind of meandering around a crooked line. i really like how dry she is and how hesitant she is to let go of the worst case scenario. but she she feels like an afterthought to the devs. playing with a hardened neve did not feel particularly different than when we met her earlier.

with bellara i could feel my interest diminishing as soon as her baby brother was revealed to be alive. as soon as cyrian's reintroduced, it becomes more about him than her. would have been cool to see her struggle with the choice instead of him. i kept seeing ghosts of merrill whenever i had her around.

davrin was the character that felt most dragon age to me. additionally he was probably the only one that felt like we were hanging out and connecting vs. being the team's in house therapist. that being said, it did get tedious having to go walk his puppydogbird so often. i wish we had more chances to talk to him about him though. he went into weisshaupt fully ready to die, and the conversation following that felt so lackluster. like we had to hurry up and pivot back to assan.

harding feels like she regressed maturity-wise. i do like how we get some dwarf-specific content, and some more titan info, but overall it felt like something was missing. also at the back end of her questline, she shares titan-visions with the kal-sharok dwarves, and playing as a dwarven rook had me sitting there like. i would also like to see it. hello.

i think my overall issue with the companion quests this time round is how passive they feel. it feels weird that rook has the final say-so in their lives. many of their personal quests don't connect to the main issue at hand, which, when we are supposedly at the behest of a ticking clock, messes with the sense of urgency. i like the companions well enough, they just don't quite itch my brain. it could be a matter of needing more time to think on them, but this is based off first impressions.

the varric twist was goofy. we kept saying he should have died on those stairs and i guess he did but huh. he never left the room, and we immediately attributed it to bad writing instead of hinting towards a twist. we just assumed they only wanted to pay brian bloom for a day's work and didn't bother to record enough lines for him. easy to dismiss as a cheap nostalgia grab, especially when the other cameos (isabela, morrigan, dorian) illicted the same feeling of seeing those folks in cheap mascot suits.

my only real hope for this game was that it would tie up the story in a neat bow. that we would have satisfying closure before moving on - from dragon age altogether or perhaps to a different era in thedas. but with what we were given, i don't know. classic gnawing feeling of is that all? i did start off feeling very hopeful, and there were moments that did shine through to me, but eh. eh. /minor pet peeve but i don't like the trend of always upping the stakes for each installment (if i get into the executors i will simply pass away).

i don't know what would have fixed this game. it's clear from the info in the artbook that they really wanted to do more. and the waves of firings, and having to pivot so many times came at the expense of the quality of the story. headcanons can only carry you so far. when you have to fill in all of the empty gaps with your own load-bearing headcanons, there is a problem. it’s fun to extrapolate on what’s there, but it feels hollow in this instance. i have always had nitpicks with certain details of the dragon age world, but this game really knocked the wind out of my sails. i'm not looking forward to what comes next. maybe i just need time to let it all marinate, but my gut says no.

i still have a lot of love in my heart for dragon age. but still.

overall disappointing.

you and nagi meet in middle school. he is a loner with a penchant for playing videos games and sleeping during class. you are a high maintenance individual with dismal grades known for your dour disposition and carrying around the violin you practice obsessively. the two of you have no friends. your middle school has designated and granted you a music room to use where you can practice in peace for your upcoming competitions. until one day you find nagi curled up in a corner of the room, asleep. obviously you're peeved. this music room is for your use only, not some secret hideout slackers can use to catch up on sleep. but also it's not like he's being a disturbance. you'll let him off. just this once. then you'll start to lock the doors.

it's not until the sky is pitch dark outside and your fingers twinge with use do you begin to gingerly pack your violin. you get so absorbed in playing you wouldn't be surprised if the slacker got up and left hours ago. you are surprised when you turn around to find nagi spread out on the floor, gaze latched to the ceiling, wide awake. in a drowsy voice, he tells you that that single song you were playing over and over again sounded like the OST of some game he likes. (you are immediately offended. the great composer bach didn't die to be compared to some video game soundtrack). then he asks if you're in this room everyday, practicing, because he can't comprehend that level of effort and devotion to anything because he isn't that interested in anything. but he liked it. the sound of you playing. you were good. the best he's ever heard. and all you can hear is the best the best the best and you're so pleased that you don't mind when he comes back the next day. and then the next. then the two of you are walking to school together and walking home. (wow the two of you were neighbors?) and when you get into the prodigious hakuho academy on a violin scholarship, nagi tests in with ease because he didn't bother to do any research and just chose the rigorous high school you got into.

it's good for a while. then it isn't. there's a violin competition gone wrong. you lose. badly. second place, which realistically isn't bad. but you wanted first. you wanted to be the best. realistically you've always known you weren't a genius. you weren't born with the talent. your fingers were fumbling over the same strings other fingers were gliding over. but you practiced. every single day. hours every morning before school and hours every night after. it's the first time you've ever competed against a genius, and you're heartbroken at the gap between your skills. your competitor took up the violin only four years ago. you've been playing since you were a child. the news outlets call him a prodigy while you're just a temporary talent.

nagi tells you to give up. realistically, he says, you'll never be first as long as long as you're up against a genius. what he doesn't tell you is that the devastation on your face made his heart hurt. he doesn't want you to hurt. but your heart breaks all over again. you lash out. it's the last time the two of you speak together on friendly terms and nagi doesn't talk to you again. turns out, there's somebody else occupying and monopolizing his attention now.

you meet mikage reo and it all goes even further downhill from there.

storyline:

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ min yeoreom is the reincarnation of wang yeo's and kim sun's daugther (and the goblin's/kim shin's niece)

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ however, unlike kim sun/sunny, or wang yeo, yeoreom does remember her past life as their daughter/princess

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ she retained all her memories

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ so she recognized her parents and uncle, but she was paranoid about what would happen if she said anything, and knowing they don't remember her, she chose to keep quiet

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ however, since kim shin does remember his past, he soon realised who she was

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ kim shin expressed joy in finally being able to see his niece grown up as he died when she was only a child

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ he only found our her identity when she accidently called him a nickname she used to called him as a baby, 'shincheon' (a combination of samcheon/uncle and shin) as she couldnt properly pronounce uncle

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ but yeoreom was happy to see her parents, especially her father happy as he had yet to remember his past, eventhough deep down she still felt some resentment towards him for what he did to her

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ yeoreom was only one when her mother and uncle died at the order of her father

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ after her mothers death and as she grew up, her father wang yeo practically ignored her existence as he was too pained to be remined of her mother everytime he saw her

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ lee juyeol was born in a high-class family but fought to be a general in the military, as his family was full of scholars

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ he worked alongside kim shin, shin was juyeol's mentor

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ and because of his status, he was arranged and bethrothed to yeoreom since they were newborns

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ and so they grew up as childhood friends who knew that one day theyd marry each other

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ they quickly grew fond of each other, and that fondness grew to love

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ but, wangyeo forbaded yeoreom to leave the palace, so they would find ways to meet in secret

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ finding peace and an escape from the world, in each other's presence under the moonlight, as their young love grew, they anticipated for the day they'd wed

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ however, what they didn't know was wangyeo's rage and envy was brewing when he stubbled on their secret meeting, and upon seeing his daughter who resembled his late wife, smiling at juyeol, his blood boiled, his ever-growing daughter never smiled at him, sure he ignored her but she had never once smiled at him like that, that enraged him, and right then and there wang yeo promised he would kill them both, why? who knows, wang yeo's rage did unfathomable things

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ so he waited, he waited for their next meeting under the moonlight, he would only then confront them

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ then that day came, yeoreom and juyeol, innocent young lovers were strolling in the royal garden when they reached the bridge, yeoreom pulled juyeol to it, wanting to see the moon's light reflection on the water

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ once they reached the bridge, after a moment of admiring yeoreom soft features as she gazed at the rippling water, juyeol pulled out a small pouch, telling her to open it, it revealed a small hair pin

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ he told her the hairpin was a promise, a promise of his love and their future

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ however, as he was holding the hairpin, about to place it into her hair per her request, they were interrupted

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ wangyeo openedly threatened juyeol, hollering curses at him in a fit of rage and envy, juyeol pulled yeoreom behind him, shielding her from wangyeo's drawn sword

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ but then, yeoreom stepped forward, finally confronting her father

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ she condemned him. for all his actions. for killing her mother. for neglecting her. even if he tried to pretend it didnt happen, she remembered. finally confronting him with the fact she never considered him as her father and that her mother would never forgive him.

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ this made wangyeo lose it.

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ he swang his sword, aiming for yeoreom.

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ but juyeol spun them around, hugging yeoreom close, as he felt the sword plunge through him, but what he only realised after as he looked in yeoreom's eyes was that the sword had plunge through her heart too

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ wangyeo's sword had penetrated through both of them as they embraced each others dying body

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ they died in holding each other, taking their last breath together, joined by a single sword, her father's, they died whispering promises to meet in another life, somewhere they can finally be together and see the moonlight once more

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ only when wangyeo let go of his sword as the two fell to the ground, did he slowly realize what he'd done

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ he killed his wife, now he killed his daughter and her lover, the only person she had ever smiled for, wang yeo fell to his knees infront of his daughter, and weeped until the guards found him the next morning, struggling to pull him away from her body as he wouldn't loosen his grip on her hand, which wore a small delicate ring. a ring he had made for her when she was a baby.

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ he had a ring made for her along with a matching hairpin for his late wife, how could he ever let go of them now? soon, he passed due to his overwhelming grief.

current timeline:

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ she still remembers Juyeol, but he lost the memories of his past life.

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ they met again when yeoreom was attacked at night after a late shift, when juyeol heard her and saved her.

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ a direct parallel to their first meeting in the past. where juyeol saved her with his sword that he was gifted from kim shin, when they were still young.

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ yeoreom recognised him immediately, and turns out, juyeol was a police captain this life, yeoreom began to tear up and went to touch her hairpin

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ the one that he gifted her back then, which she still wore

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ in the police station, as juyeol filled out the papers for the formal police report for yeoreom, he couldnt help but notice her longing gaze, he then picked up the courage to ask her why she was staring at him like that

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ startled by his direct question, after avoiding his gaze, afraid to meet his eyes after all this time, she finally looked up to meet his piercing gaze that were already on hers

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ she daintly answered him, "you remind me of my late fiancé"

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ reliving all the memories she had, but also looking in his eyes to see if he recognised her, pain in her eyes as she looked into his, he felt some sort of familiarity, he felt like his heart was burning.

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ he felt a surged of pain, love, longing, yearning, relief, and a sense of similarity as he looked in her eyes. confused he brushed it off.

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ juyeol cried in her arms saying how he’s having a hard time because she reminds him of someone, but he doesn’t know who. he doesn't understand why it makes him so happy yet so sad to be around her

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ telling her of someone he meets in his dreams. he describes his dreams, these dreams being his memories replaying, as if taunting him

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ she’s shedding tears as well, as she pats his back, and caressing his hair trying to comfort him even though she's restraining herself from telling him the truth, telling him about their past lives, telling him of their past love, but even if she tells him, that wouldn't mean anything, reminding herself that, he isnt the same juyeol, this is his reincarnation, even if it hurts to see their same mannerisms and how similar they are. this isn't the same person. he doesn't remember.

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ when she fell asleep after drinking, she drunkingly called juyeol, who brought her back to his aparment

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ he caressed her hair and face, not understanding how he can feel such fondness towards someone he doesn’t love.

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ he covered her with a blanket and placed medicine on the bedside, letting her take his bed as he took the couch.

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ and then he noticed her hairpin, a sudden erge to touch it came to him, a gut feeling yelling at him to touch it, he gave in to this instinct, and when he did, the floodgates of his suppressed memories came flooding back in

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ memories from the beginning, all the way to their deaths, he started crying, sobbing, as he felt his heart aching from the memories he began reliving

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ the last memory he saw was her in his arms as they slowly passed away, taking their last breath together, whispering promises of seeing the moonlight together one more time

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ when he retratched his hand from the hairpin, his breathing heavy, the tension he felt in his heart softened as his gaze fell on her delicate sleeping face, juyeol's gaze avered down to see that she had grabbed his hand in her sleep

┈─๋࣭ ⭑⚝ a soft smile crept onto her face, before breathlessly whispering his name, he could only analyze her soft features as she slept, caressing her face, sighing as he felt the familiar touch of his fingertips against her soft cheek, “Why didn’t you tell me…?”

oof that was depressing, but dw they had a happy ending. but yes this is the storyline suin and kyungsoo played in goblin, ㅠㅠ

2025 QL Anticipations, Wishes, and Resolutions

After wrapping up my top 10 list for 2024, it's time to look ahead to next year with my most-anticipated upcoming series, series I'm planning to catch up on, and some resolutions.

Top 5 anticipated series in 2025

Us (pilot trailer) / dir. Fon Kanittha (GMMTV) / adaptation / rumored for January: Emi Thasorn had her Mark Pakin moment last year—she was literally everywhere (Last Twilight, Beauty Newbie, Wandee Goodday, The Rebound, The Trainee, and currently in Perfect 10 Liners), and that has built up my anticipation for her first leading role. I don’t actually have super high expectations for the storytelling, as this is an adaptation of an author with certain weaknesses, but I’m hoping the simplicity of the plot allows the acting to shine, and I’m enticed by the potential of two fresh GL pairings in EmiBonnie and ViewMim (if they do end up as a side couple).

Khemjira (pilot trailer) / dir. Ron Patarapon + Aoftion Kittipat (Mandee Works) / adaptation / currently filming: I am not the biggest fan of Domundi/Mandee projects, but this feels a little different in scope and flavor, with the supernatural horror elements and a largely rural setting. Also, I can’t lie, I'm excited for the combo of KengNamping and TleFirstone. I have a weird little fascination with the entire [vague handwaving] of DMD The Friendship and TleFirstone are my third-gen blorbos; I suffered through the entirety of Secret Love just to see if they kissed good (they did). Also, with the musical talent here, if we don’t at least get a banger OST out of this show I’m going to be so mad.

Knock Out (pilot trailer) / dir. Tee Bundit (Deehup/WeTV) / adaptation / recently did fitting: Boxing/martial arts settings are gonna be everywhere in 2025 (there are at least two more QLs that I can think of), but the combination of Deehup production quality, WeTV je ne sais quoi, and a promising new acting pair in GunNice is just delicious, especially after seeing that pilot trailer. Tee Bundit excels in not only drawing out excellent physical intimacy but also making show settings feel lived-in, and the action scenes in Jack & Joker were pretty decent, so I'm excited to see how he brings a boxing gym with ties to the mafia underworld to life.

Love You Teacher (pilot trailer) / dir. Dome Jarupat (Parbdee/GMMTV) / original / script being written: Boy, was this ever the most willfully misinterpreted pilot trailer from the entire GMMTV25 event. This post beautifully sums up most of my thoughts on that matter, but I want to add that after two episodes of watching PerthSanta elevate the milquetoast Perfect 10 Liners with impeccable chemistry, my excitement for them in these specific roles has grown exponentially. Give me the sunshine/grumpy dynamics with a poignant exploration of devotion and care! And we know p'Dome will bring the poignancy.

Girl Rules (pilot trailer) / dir. Jojo Tichakorn (Moongdoo/GMMTV) / original script / most likely late 2025?: p'Jojo is bringing the gospel of messy gays to the sapphics this year, and I will be seated front-row for it. I already know that Milk Pansa playing a stone cold casanova bitch is going to be A Problem for me, and I am on my knees begging for some honest-to-god hatesex or spite-fucking, just give me a truckload of whatever they have going on:

(I didn't include series like Cranium, Ticket to Heaven, and Love of Silom, which have either already been slated for 2026 or could go either way. Or series that simply don't have enough info, like 8 Hours. Ggurhggh I'm hoping the last two I listed above make the cut...)

5 series to catch up on

Pluto: I watched the first ep and definitely wanted to continue, but the series ended up on the back burner due to time. I also thought it would be a good one to binge due to the melodrama of the storyline. From the gifsets I've seen, I'm in for some good fucking food.

Century of Love: Honestly, I'm kind of looking forward to DaouOffroad's next project a little more (I think they are going to thrive in the bodyguard dynamic), but I know I'll want to watch something lakorn-ish at some point, and CoL will scratch that itch.

Reverse 4 You: This seemed to fly under the radar in fandom circles, but the concept sounded interesting (it has speculative elements like time manipulation and precognition) and by all accounts the acting was really solid. I also have Apple My Love (Kongthup + Ormsin lead = winning combo in my world) on the list but this one is just a little more compelling so it will take precedence.

Blueming + Where Your Eyes Linger (movie version probably): After losing my mind over LFCT, I promised myself to finally finish off the Hwang Daseul cinematic universe this year. 🫡

The On1y One: I prefer to binge Taiwanese series, so it's nice to have this in the back pocket for a slow weekend or whatever. See Your Love is making me remember how much the pacing of TWBLs drives me nuts sometimes, so we'll see when I'm in the mood again...

2025 resolutions

Prioritize GL! This might be obvious from the series I mentioned above lol. I did such a bad job of this last year, but luckily GL seems to be a growing slice of the pie. The things I'm looking forward to: new pairings, messier dynamics (GIRL RULES), and hopefully more original scripts (GIRL RULES!!!!) as well. Pipe dream: CAN I GET ONE (1) NON-FEMME SAPPHIC CHARACTER PLEASE...

Watch a series outside of the big four markets (Thailand, Japan, Korea, Taiwan). There are a couple of completed Filipino series on my watch list, so it's just about making time for it.

Write more consistently about QL. I did participate in Tumblr discussions this year, albeit spottily, and I'd like to do it more! I tend to put my thoughts in tags rather than adding onto a reblog or commenting on a post, so let's see if I can break that habit and contribute more directly.

Dandadan Episode 1 Review - Ghosts Vs Aliens

October is considered the spooky season, so Dandadan is perfect for the vibes. It’s a good mix of comedy and horror that you don’t get too often in anime. The animation quality was super unique and I really like what was presented!

The story is about two people named Momo Ayase and Ken Takakura, commonly known as Okarun. Momo is a girl who likes guys like her celebrity crush Ken Takakura (an olden day Japanese actor, sort of like Clint Eastwood), but she has a good heart when she defends Okarun from bullies in his class. However, Okarun believed she likes occult things like UFOs and extraterrestrial phenomena. While Momo does believe in the occult, she doesn’t believe in aliens but in ghosts. However, Okarun doesn’t believe in ghosts, so the two decide to challenge the other to see which supernatural existence actually exists by going to occult hotspots. Little do they know that both exist.

The premiere was super quirky in the sense that we get character building first from Momo and Okarun and then all the action and supernatural stuff happens at the end. I like that, honestly! It’s nice to learn who these two are. Momo has extremely high standards in men due to her ideal type being her celeb crush, but still has a good heart in that she defends Okarun and also hates people insulting her grandmother. Okarun may seem meek, but he does come around at the end saying that he wants to protect Momo as she was the one who stood up for him when no one else did.

Now for the action and supernatural part…that was crazy. Man, it’s nice to see a supernatural show where both ghosts and aliens exist. I feel like this story is one where they explore the existence of other paranormal creatures and not stick to a specific type. I like that! Though, it was sort of scary seeing these creatures move around! The Turbo Granny was by far the scene-stealer. Who’d ever think that you’d actually meet a lewd granny in a tunnel saying that she’d let you suck her t*ts in exchange for your balls. Then, there are very creepy aliens wanting to r*pe females because their species cannot reproduce. They even have a grotesque form underneath their default form. However, it was interesting that the person who believed in aliens got entangled with the ghost and the person who doesn’t believe in aliens got entangled with them.

I really like the animation! It’s really floppy in the sense that the characters are always moving around. I haven’t really watched a Science Saru anime, but if this is what they produce, I should reconsider and start watching more of their stuff. Even for mundane stuff like Momo walking towards Okarun is fluid in movement. The action scenes were also well animated in that it goes really fast. This anime feels like a roller coaster in a sense in that it slows in the beginning and then goes fast after a certain point. If the premiere is this good, I do wonder what will transpire for the rest of the show.

I love the music! The OST was amazing and I loved the opening! Creepy Nuts had a hit song with the Mashle opening in Winter, but I think they hit another home run. The song for this show is a lot different from the Mashle dance, but it’s really good and hits the vibes of the show! My favorite part is Momo doing the shimmy with Okarun and another guy doing the Carlton in the back. The ending song is good too! Though, I do wonder who that cat is…

The voice acting cast was really good! Like I mentioned in my Blue Box review that Jump title animes usually cast new faces for their animes at times, but like Demon Slayer, Dandadan uses a plethora of big names for their production. The only “new face” in the cast list is Shion Wakayama. Well, I wouldn’t call her a new face, but more of a rising star in the sense that I’ve seen her in other stuff before this. I usually associate with her with soft-spoken girls because of her roles in The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses and Pokemon Paldean Winds where she played characters who are reserved. This is the first time I’ve seen her with a more ‘boyish’ and talkative role. I actually like this voice she’s using for Momo! It feels natural and there’s so much emotion. Natsuki Hanae voices Okarun. Given his track record, Hane never has a bad role. I honestly think this role is perfect for him because of the amount of screaming. If you watch Demon Slayer and seen how many times Tanjiro screams, then you know Okarun is perfect for Hanae.

There are super big names in this anime too. The one role that shocked me the most was Mayumi Tanaka as Turbo Granny. The one and only Mayumi Tanaka is known for her roles as Krillin from Dragon Ball and Monkey D. Luffy from One Piece. Yes, Turbo Granny and Luffy are voiced by the same person. I remembered an episode where Luffy didn’t want to give his balls to the Amazoness Tribe and now Tanaka is playing a granny ghost that bites others’ balls. Luffy would be shocked to see this like how he was shocked with how Robin got Franky to join the Strawhats. The aliens Momo encounter are all voiced by Kazuya Nakai. If you’re a One Piece fan, he’s the fan-favorite Roronoa Zoro. Yes. It’s hilarious how Luffy and Zoro are playing roles completely different from their One Piece roles and even their usual roles! It’s really nice to see that even at the prime of their career, they try new things! Another surprise was Nana Mizuki as Momo’s grandmother. Another One Piece voice actress in this anime! Mizuki voiced Hiyori from the Wano arc. Momo’s grandma isn’t seen much, so I can’t wait to see what sort of person she is later on.

The English dub cast is crazy too! Momo and Okarun are voiced by Abby Trott and AJ Beckles, who are both good rising stars in the English dubbing world. However, the name that shocked me the most was Kari Wahlgren as Momo’s grandma. Wahlgren is a union voice actress, meaning that she doesn’t appear in anime all that often nowadays with the last time I’ve heard her in anime was in Durarara as Celty. It’s crazy how she made her big anime comeback in a big show like this! If you like English dub, then this is one you shouldn’t miss out on!

I honestly can’t wait for what happens next. Will Okarun get his balls back? The fact that the plot progression is due to his missing balls is funny in itself. I hope he can get them back… If Momo has psychic powers, what will Okarun have? I want to know! What are your thoughts about the premiere?

Clawcode Headcanons (because I could literally talk about them all day)

If Miles G is unsure about someone he'll put up a mask/front with them, but the minute Ganke M walks beside him and says the funniest unfunny joke known to man he snorts and the tough guy act completely crumbles against his will

Ganke M is the 'bro let's have fun' to his 'my life is the grind, all I know is the grind'. Even when Ganke M helps Miles G with complicated missions, afterwards he'll patch him up, then get him some Wcdonalds or King Burger and then play some Mario's Cart with him the rest of the night. Cue them falling asleep together on the couch

I'm still not over the idea of them getting each other Dragon Ball Z matching dog tags (rip to the goat of course 🙏🏾). Like there's so much sauce there it's perfect. Spider-Miles from 1610B would think its the coolest thing ever even when he teases Miles G about it, and the first week Ganke M wears it he makes sure every one can see it proudly around his neck

Ganke is Pan and Miles is Bi and Ganke doesn't think about gender too hard

They know each other's birthdays, favorite foods, shoe sizes, game catalogues, jokes, childhood stories, favorite songs, allergies,  icks, moral boundaries, biggest secrets, and worst fears...and they've only known each other for a year and a few months

Ganke M is simultaneously the class clown and one of the smartest students in his grade. Miles G is the other top student. Despite Miles G wanting to keep a low profile, when he's around Ganke he can't help but joke around and start roasting people and clowning in class too, and the two become pretty popular among the other students. Between their high grades, class disruptions, pranks, one or both of them disappearing to 'use the bathroom for a sec', prize winning robotics projects, funny jokes, and passing test scores...their teachers don't know if they should flip a coin to give them awards for their grades or to send them back to detention again

Rio and Jefferson were suspicious of Ganke M at first, thinking he was a bad influence, but eventually they warmed up to him and welcomed him after seeing how much he made his son smile. Even after Jeff was no longer there, Rio would still smile and welcome Ganke to their house just like they always had. Ganke sometimes even stops by to cook some Korean dishes and helps clean up whenever he visits Miles.

When Aaron Davis finds out Ganke M knows Miles G's big secret, he meets with Ganke alone for the first time (even though he would meet him once or twice in passing when Jeff was alive, they've never really talked to each other until this moment). At first Aaron is intimidating and tries to tell Ganke to stay out of Miles' business, but Ganke has never been a pushover and refuses. After a while, Aaron can see his determination and realizes Ganke's loyalty to Miles isn't shakeable. He sees something in Ganke that reminds him of himself. So Aaron says if he really wants to help Miles, then he needs to become stronger. It's after this that Aaron teaches him to box and fight, and teaches him more about tech, engineering, surveilance, tracking, stealth, and hydraulics.

Even though Miles G can hear his mom in his ear saying not to waste any food, Miles doesn't like eating the crust on sandwiches or pizza. But that's ok because Ganke will eat his own food and then eat the crust for him. Ganke will eat the tomatoes off of Miles' burgers too

Months after Miles G and Ganke M meet their universe's Gwen V. Stacy aka Gwenom, and she becomes an ally, she admits to them that she thought they were a couple at first. They weren't dating yet so she's not completely right, but with the way the two look at each other after she says that, she knows she's not completely wrong either. She totally teases them about it.

In this universe Dr. Ophelia Octavious is an African American scientist, ruler, and engineer who is part of the Sinister Six and runs a big part of the city. Miles G and Dr. Octavious have a Sonic the Hedgehog and Dr.Eggman type dynamic. Miles G keeps getting in the way of her plans and she knows he somehow has a connection to the original Prowler. Still, she secretly admires the kid for his heart and genius at least, not that she would admit this. One time at her base she successfully captures Ganke M saying "I have your little boyfriend" to try to get leverage over Miles G, but Ganke M is smarter than he looks and doesn't give her any information right before he escapes on his own with a dohickey he has in his pocket. When Miles G comes in to save the day and go toe to toe with Octavious, Ganke M looks from side to side and backs up towards a computer terminal and inserts a flash drive that hacks into and shuts down her whole system. Ganke and Miles slip away when the lights shut off, and all Octavious can see in the darkness is a computer terminal that has an anime girl dancing with flashing text that says 'Get Miku-ed'. Dr. Octavious is in disbelief and has several emotions at once before laughing and saying "I hate heroic teenage couples"

Their universe's Felicia L. Hardy will either work with you, be your ally, con you, or sell you out and Miles and Ganke don't know what to make of her. She guesses they're a couple almost immediately with the way they fight her (when Ganke already has his own suit) and even when they're on different sides, she teases them like she's an aunt or a big sister. Eventually they meet her girlfriend and even she teases them affectionately too.

Ganke's mom cooks Miles so much food when he visits (even when they don't have a lot) and Miles struggles to finish it because he's already so full from the first five plates but it's ingrained in him not to waste food. He taps out and brings the rest back home in Tupperware for him and his mom.

Ganke M and Miles G go to the rooftop a lot to listen to music and look at the stars together. Now that they know their universe is so big and that there are other universes out there, it really puts it into perspective that in the grand scheme of things they're grateful for what they do have in this world...

And that is each other

A married couple who have fallen out of love get to see each other in a new light after the husband, Ju-hyeok, goes back in time and changes their history. You've never rooted this hard for such an infuriating man.

After 15 years stranded on a desert island, Seo Mok-ha pursues her dream of becoming a singer while searching for the boy who helped her escape her abusive father. Despite the horrors, this show will make you believe there is good in the world.

4. Hometown Cha Cha Cha (2021)

Yoon Hye-jin moves to a seaside town to open a dental clinic and finds the home she always wanted amidst its colorful residents. So funny and the male lead is basically the perfect man.

3. Crash Landing On You (2019-2020)

After a freak accident lands her in North Korea, Yoon Se-ri must rely on the soldier who saved her life in order to survive, stay hidden, and get back to South Korea. Rips you apart in the best possible way.

2. Live Up To Your Name (2017)

Renowned acupuncturist Heo Im falls 400 years through time and lands in Seoul, where his life and fate intertwine with cardiac surgeon Choi Yeon Kyung. Beautiful, unmatched chemistry.

Ha Eun Gyeol is mysteriously sent back in time, where he meets his parents as teenagers and discovers he didn't know as much about them as he thought he did. Peak family feels, peak soft couple, and peak enemies to lovers.
