Chilchuck analysis speedrun: As a hardworking half-foot who grew up poor and discriminated against and had his gullibility taken advantage of multiple times in his early adventuring days, Chilchuck thinks optimism is a dangerous flaw. He’s stressed and strict all the time because his job is noticing details like traps that could get everyone killed before anyone knows it, he takes the lives of everyone to be on his shoulders, and with the way he speaks about it that probably partly reflects how he felt about taking it upon himself to provide for his family too. His life’s always been pretty centered around work and has become even moreso now that his wife left and everyone is independent, and due to past events he’s very iffy with bonding with coworkers. He thinks feelings and job are a disaster mix. Like with his wife or with parties hiring him as sacrifice, being open or having good faith is vulnerability which can get you hurt, so he processes and shows all his stress as anger instead of worry. Doing strict dieting probably isn’t helping the irritability what with hunger, and on top of being a hunger suppressant alcohol might be the main stress reliever he has.

On the topic of Astarion and his disapproval towards helping NPCs in specific scenarios, I personally think at least some of it stems from spiteful jealousy. Especially considering some of his later dialogue in the game about how "nobody ever helped me, nobody ever had a kind word or tried to lend a hand." He's just been loosed from 200 years of torment by pure fucking chance because of the illithids, a situation that he likely never would have managed to get away from otherwise- and is now faced with watching his group, day after day, dragging other people out of horrible situations (some more similar to his own than others) with a smile and a wave. I think he's fucking seething about it- the fact that these people are so easily (and gleefully!) helped by a more good-aligned PC where he was not. Part of him may even consider it unfair, as well, that he is now spending his time as part of the group helping resolve all these other people's issues while still being haunted by his own- and doing so instead of spending his time relishing in his newfound freedom by doing whatever the hell he wants.

This could also explain why, as you progress with his storyline and move farther into the game, getting involved in his quest to free himself permanently for Cazador, he has fewer complaints. As his own problems are being addressed, I think he loosens up about precious time being "wasted" pulling other people out of the dumps, and starts focusing more on what the future promises and his plan for success rather than resenting other people for finding a quick solution to their problems at your hands.
