*throws some patterns in your face* These will all be lanyards and probably gold foil washi tape as well. Pattern inspiration from top to bottom: Ukrainian egg dying, Chinese blue porcelain, Japanese kimono motifs, the locked tomb, Norwegian rosemaling

For the past few centuries, immigrants have brought with them their knowledge of European folk art painting to decorate furniture, walls, and accessories for various types. This particular type of decoration, called rosemaling, evolved in Scandinavia during the early part of the eighteenth century and is, perhaps, the most exuberant of all forms of folk art.

Bday card for my mom :^]
We made a big snow dinosaur/dragon creature in the winter, so I drew it being reborn as a spring fairy! I tried to do some kind of rosemaling design with spring flowers for the boarder. Tulips, snowdrops, and dandelions. 🌼💐

I finally decided I'm done messing around with this piece and have now deemed it COMPLETE!
This is a Rosemaling painting, a traditional Norwegian folk art, and specifically, this is in the Os style, a more fantastical style that uses bright vibrant colors and bold designs. The least traditional of the styles XD This was done mostly over a weekend class with a stencil given to us by the teacher, and you can see the progress pictures below:

Here you can see the chalk stencil, and I based in my green leaves. The stencil is meant to tell you the basic layout and shape and you do not want to get detailed with it, as it can make your pattern confusing and messy.

Details added into the leaves. I tried a few different detailing designs, as our teacher encouraged making every leaf pattern different.

Flowers and scrolls.

More flowers!

MORE FLOWERS.

And this is what I managed to finish at the end of the weekend class. All major flowers completed with only filigree and linework (and the landscape in the middle) to do. The paint is very wet and glossy so it's hard for me to get a good picture of it.

And complete! Coincidentally, my first landscape painting too!
Enjoy!

The "Rosemaling" collab between fashion house Embla Bunader and skateboard company SHIT
In 2020, Embla Bunader and SHIT released the "Rosemaling" collection of hoodies, t-shirts and skate decks. The designs are by Torhild Lambersøy, mother-in-law to the founder of Embla Bunader.
Full article about the collection (in Norwegian) English translation of the article

Wanted to share my washi and lanyard product photos on a separate post because I’m proud of how they turned out. Product photography has always been one of the aspects of my job as an independent artist that I struggle with the most, especially since I don’t have any background in photography, but over the years I’ve found a simple system that works for me ^^ Lanyards and washi are still available at Smurfee.com (or link in my pinned post)

Rosemaling (Norwegian art form)
Rosemaling can be painted on anything, mostly we see it on objects such as cake boxes, chairs, cabinets etc.
Here you can see the traditional art form on walls, roofs & beds. During this time, rosemaling is quite common in norwegian houses, but mostly for smaller objects. However a while back the art form was also used to decorate houses, curches, cabins etc.

Throwback to the time I stood inside a reconstruction of Cappelenstugu, a house where every single surface was painted with rosemaling, and nearly burst into tears because it's so fucking beautiful. The pictures I can find on the museum website don't quite do it justice, but it's just. staggering. artist Olav Hanssen did this around 1800, in an enclosed space without reliable strong artificial light, and covered every single surface in gorgeous, intricate artwork (featuring Adam and Eve hiding after eating the apple, among other things).
Looking at Scandinavian interior design and thinking about how much cooler the world would be if the nordic countries took the South American approach to decor
#ROSEMALING MY BELOVED#also many of the reconstructed houses in skansen had art and murals on the walls#and the doors were all carved with patterns#nothing was undecorated!#everywhere was a testament to artistic expression#history#rosemaling
