tell me about drawtectives. what is this little show.
oooooh my god oh my god. they are my guys. so.
drawtectives itself is a youtube series created by julia lepetit on Drawfee. it's an rpg mystery show– s1 is a murder mystery, s2 is just a mystery– that doubles as an art challenges show. she draws all of the backgrounds and npcs and most of the assets (the 'cutscenes', you could call them) and then the team gets together, knowing absolutely nothing besides what julia's asked them to prepare, and does some funky improv to create a very funky storyline.
there are 3 players and one dm; the pcs are rosé, york, and grendan/grenda/grandma/gma, and the Big NPCs are Jancy True (s1/s2) and Eugene Finch (s2) and they're, in their own words, a found family, so. beloved. their backup plan if all their jobs fail is to move out east and open a bookstore. jancy and eugene have fully accepted their titles as mom/ancestral ghost and son despite meeting each other likely once before the drawtectives dragged them together. overall though if i had to summarize, it's a bunch of friends getting together, making a bunch of puns, appreciating julia's art, and laughing together. the vibes are 10/10 so loving. in writing the transcripts i've written (Karina laughs) (Nathan laughs) (All laugh) So Many Times it's just fun.
so there's three pcs. first one we meet is gyorik 'york' rogdul, who's a half-orc come to the city to learn about his mother's culture. he is the character we have by far the most lore for– if I compiled all the lore I had about the Northern Tribes and Wild Trains, I think the document would be multiple pages. he's also illiterate, which was an interesting decision for the english major of the group to make (in other words, York Will Not Be Illiterate For Season Three bc Y'all Cannot Read) and morally gray if you think about it too hard (he killed his own brother) but yknow he's hot so it's okay. they're all hot any crimes committed are okay. he's also aroace (confirmed by the player, which is!! vibes!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TELLING ME @axolotllee!)
rosé is the Human Rogue and the youngest of the party; her main trait in s1 was Millennial and she Dealt with that. she, in contrast with York, has so little lore we are scraping the barrel. she was a thief, then left everything about that life behind and changed her name to rosé when she went to work for jancy. she lied on her resumé. she knows how to sew; she's sewn Pockets of Holding on most of her clothing. she bonded with a stray cat that lived outside her last apartment. she's three credits short of graduating college. she's, in addition to being a drawtective, jancy's intern, and cried when jancy got her a cupcake. she won't tell her best friends when her birthday is or where she goes to school or what her last name is. that's all we know about her and i love her and she could probably kill someone as she has multiple knives on her person and does not use them. she's bright and funny and can be pretty dark but really does find the humor in it which is. wonderful.
so grendan highforge starts out as The Snobby Rich Boy which. already love the trope something Always Happens To Them if they're a pc. then through s1 they make an offhand comment about a character (faucon, whose name is pronounced 'falco') and how if her name was pronounced that way it'd be grenda. faucon asks how they feel about it. they are caught very off-guard by that and then ask to be called it for the next hour or so. then the next witness calls him gma, and then grandma, and then. yeah she realizes she's genderfluid. and he uses any pronouns and has a full beard and also wears a romper and loves dogs and the player is the Most Experienced TTRPG-er so through maybe using resources a bittt grandma is the most observant character of all of them. he's also a dog walker and a lightweight and does canonically have druidic magic though that was Not Touched On Much and showed up to their first day on the job slightly stoned (they did stop doing that though.) she carries around a box to make the height difference (york is 7'. grendan is 4'. rosé is 6'. you can see the formatting issue) slightly less difficult. she doesn't know how rhinos reproduce but has had a fascination with them since a police chief said one might've committed a crime. i think they could kill someone by talking too much but they don't actually have the strength or dex to do Jack Shit.
and jancy true is the head pi (a great many of the characters are puns and i love it so much) and is there to make sure things get done and clues don't get missed. she has a cochlear implant and uses a cane and solved s1 just by Reading The Paper and hearsay. she solved about half of s2 before Someone Stopped Her. she says hello children to the drawtectives and it is such a fond thing. eugene is. a guy who i love. julia started the show thinking he would be some mysterious character to join them and then made the wonderful improv decision– avoiding having to do npc-npc conversation– of saying 'yeah eugene is spinning a camera on its stand' and rosé just says so gleefully. 'guys. i think he's stupid.' and he became their son. his character is a lot of The Plot of s2 so i don't want to get into it too much but. jancy and eugene my beloved.
they're just. such a family. to quote nathan (grenda's Player) from the s2 talkback: "That's one of my favorite things about this show, is we came in with these vague ideas for characters, and just playing them with each other, they became friends and became better people as a result of knowing each other and solving mysteries. ... Like, we all kind of independently made our characters people that either were distant from their families or, you know, just had tenuous connections to other stuff, and so these are, like, the realest connections they have in their lives."
and then karina (rosé) about 10 seconds later: "Yeah, we love a found family where they bond over just being the worst."
god. them. they're chaotic and loud and feel very real to me. they have excitement and are pretty bad at social cues but they love each other and want to die together because they would hate too much to be separated. i could articulate this better but it's one in the morning and they mean a great deal to me.

Drawtective's Headcanon:
With how much everyone loves Eugene(audience, the Drawfee crew, AND the characters themselves) I'm so very eager to see how they add him to season three!
Like, I easily see him shadowing ALL of his parents.
Dog-walking with Gma(maybe even running into Harper and her new pupper from the one shot! I'm sure that'll be a fun day to tell the rest of the team over boba or sammies).
He's for sure fashionable enough to walk the catwalk with York! THEY CAN HAVE MATCHING OUTFITS!
But mostly, as he's brought on and will be qualified to be on the next case as a JUNIOR Drawtective, he's mostly an intern at the office doubling as Rosé's assistant!
I am very eager for next season, I can't wait for my found family to come back. And I can't wait to see what my baby boy's been up to in prep to join his parents on the next case!

Where does eugene or jancy stay if they come over to the apartment? Is there a particular reason that rosé has her own room? (your blueprint is so cool!!!)
aw ty!!!
Rosé has her own room bc she needs to have a private space, even if she doesn't always use it-- she probably sleeps in York's bed with him and Gma most nights anyway. Her room sort of doubles as guest room, so that's where they would stay. The couch has a pull-out bed in case they need extra space, though.

Forgot to post this follow-up to "Doppelganger Date," It's time for Sara and Hunter to meet the rest of the Drawtectives! And Harper is there too.
(Eugene is not here because this is set in between the one-shot and season 2. Idk what's going on with him in Season 3)
Enjoy!
We Party with York
Hunter hadn’t agreed to party with the Drawtectives, yet here they were. It was hard, not impossible, but very hard, to say no to Sara.
And Sara rarely said no to a party.
“You’re not getting paid for this one?”
“No, we’re networking. Plus, it will be fun to see Harper and Rosé and meet their friends.”
“Do you think they’ll flirt with me again?”
“Who wouldn’t?”
“Lots of people.”
“Their loss.” Sara scanned the crowd, searching for their new friends. After a moment she spotted familiar pink hair and waved, and suddenly they were surrounded.
Sara seemed unfazed but Hunter wasn’t used to being around so many attractive strangers all at once. The big guy with enormous arms obviously wasn’t her type, but she recognized that he was male model hot.
Rosé looked similarly cute as the first time they’d met, with a loose arm around Harper, who was pretty but an acquired taste personality-wise.
And then there was, “Grandma, nice to meet you.”
Hunter didn’t make a habit of asking people if their names were real, but she must have looked a little confused.
“You can also call me Grendan, or Grenda, or Gma. Any pronouns.”
“Nice to meet you too.” Grandma was kind of… Well, her cousin Maddox would say they were a baddie, or something like that.
“I love your names,” Sara said earnestly, “and your romper!”
“Thanks, I like your outfit too.”
Since it was a party for models, Sara had gone with a plum-colored off-the-shoulder top (you could just see her lime green bra peeking out underneath), black jeans with a rhinestone rainbow on the back pockets, butterfly earrings with matching hair clips, and eight rings in the ROY G. BIVO spectrum (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, and opal, all fake except for the opal). To Hunter, she was the hottest person at the party, and she was turning heads left and right.
“I like your knuckle guareds. I bet you punch very hard,” the big one, York, said appreciatively.
“I’m more of a lover, not a fighter.”
Rosé wiggled her eyebrows at Sara. “Us too.”
“I’m a fighter and a lover,” York said stoically.
“Then you’ll have to give me some punching pointers.”
Sara was such a natural, Hunter was both utterly in awe of her girlfriend and also profoundly uncomfortable.
Despite being the only one who wasn’t a detective, Harper was the first one to notice.
“Ugh, I know, rich people parties are the worst. Let’s get a drink.”
Harper untangled herself from Rosé, who was still flirting with Sara, and pulled Hunter away from the crowds. Hunter briefly wondered if divide-and-conquer was their foursome strategy. At this point, she wouldn’t rule anything out.
“Do you go to a lot of rich people parties?” Hunter asked, trying her hardest to make unflirty small talk.
“I used to, before my dad died.”
“Oh, I’m sorry.” Unflirty had definitely been achieved.
“Yeah. It took me a while to be sad about it,” Harper admitted, pouring them some drinks.
“I get that. I didn’t know hwo to feel for the longest time after my parents died.”
“How long did it take for you to get past that?”
“Well, it’s been seven years and sometimes I still feel numb. But it comes and goes in waves, and having people you care about helps.”
Harper looked over to where the Drawtectives were learning an elaborate dance move from Sara.
“My people are weird.”
“So are mine. I wouldn’t trade any of them for the world, though.”
Harper nodded and handed Hunter a drink, so that they didn’t have to linger in sentimental silence. Then Harper showed her pictures of Harold (her dog) for a few minutes, which was way better at setting Hunter at ease than the alcohol.
After a few minutes of Harold pics (Harper had so many, it was impressive), Sara and the others noticed they were gone and came over.
“Hey! So, apparently it’s not a dancing type party, and we have been politely asked to leave. But we’re having an after party at Waffle House!”
“Sounds great,” Hunter said with a smile, grateful for the exit. She still wasn’t sure about partying with the Drawtectives, but Harper was an acquired taste she was starting to enjoy, and if Sara vouched for the others then she knew they must be cool.
So they ended their night with hashbrowns and more pictures of Harold, which was honestly the best way any party could have gone.

Regarding pitches for media involved in the tournament... I have one for Drawtectives! Strap in, it's a long one.
It's a series on Youtube from the Drawfee channel, and it's like. It's roleplaying + drawing. The plot and the NPCs were all done (and most voiced) by one member, Julia Lepetit, and the other three are player characters who must solve the mystery by talking to NPCs and doing drawing challenges. It's mostly goofy and fun bcs. Well. It's Drawfee, that's what they do.
So. The player characters! One, part of this tournament, is Gyorik Rogdul aka York, an arospec ace half-orc prince who loves arm wrestling and can't read and got turned into a model by chance; then, there's Grendan Highforge, aka Grenda/Gma/Grandma, the chill dog-walking dwarf druid who has a realization halfway in S1 and is officially genderfluid in S2 (any pronouns); and finally, Rosé the cool human rogue who can fit so many things in her pockets, (also she is unlabeled but has flirted with men and women). By the start of S2 they all have bonded much more closely and have a sort of ambiguous found family/queerplatonic polycule vibe and I love that for them!!
The NPCs! They are all so varied, and most have punny or silly Ace Attorney-esque names. A paladin named Sorin Justice and his wife Lotta Justice. A director named Anne Daction. A conductor named Conrad Uctor. S2 even has justification for the punny names! Which I am not going to spoil. Julia does a wonderful job with designing all of them and voicing most of them! And a few in S2 are voiced by fun guests like Elyse Willems, ProZD/SungWon Cho, and Caldwell Tanner (the OG Drawfather himself)!
The settings! Oh the settings, the background art! So lovingly created, so detailed and beautiful and fun. In S1, they were all parts of a fancy mansion-- a dining room, a library, a parlor lined with paintings and animal masks! S2 allows for more variety like a circus, a bar, even a jousting arena, and some of these have gorgeous posters made into IRL merch (currently sold out tho)!!
The drawing challenges! They're a staple part of Drawfee as a whole and hence they're a main feature here. Some are fun prompts like "draw a food creature" or "draw a steed to joust with", some are actual challenges like drawing (fantasy, knock off) celebrities based on description and drawing blindfolded guided by spoken directions. Since it's all in character, the usual Drawfee banter turns into nonsense lore and character interactions, and it's so, so much fun!!
Of course, the episodes average at about 50 minutes long, so... I get that it's tough to even start. But it's recommended (iirc by the crew themselves) that if you want a taste tester, go to S2 (Celestial Spear) episode 7. It's the one with SungWon in it, it can generally stand alone, and it's absolutely hilarious. (But it's also a dating sim parody plot, so your mileage might vary. I think it's fun tho)
So yeah. Try out Drawtectives (S3 in the works)! Thanks for being my captive audience, and I'm sorry! (for the long ramble, and also it's a Drawfee thing to end with sorry)
!!!!
