Russell T Davies – revived Doctor Who

Russell T Davies wasn't just "some guy" they got to run the revival series; He lobbied the BBC to bring the show back and was in discussion talks in 1998 before the show was back on air. Davies brought the show back in a ginormous way and allowed a new generation to fall in love with the series, which translates into people going back and watching Classic Who as well. Under him, the show was immensely popular, regularly being one of the most watched things each week. Doctor Who would not exist today without him and I'm not even sure the classic show would have the same love it currently does without Davies introducing the series to a brand new audience. Steven Moffat – showrunner for the eleventh and twelfth Doctors

This might be a hard sell on the website that, for some reason, can't seem to progress past 2011 when it comes to evaluating Moffat and his work, but I'm going to try anyway. Curse of the Fatal Death, advocate for female doctor since 1998. First onscreen biracial and bigender regeneration. Wrote some of the most iconic episodes of the series, including the 50th, Blink and Heaven Sent. Things like Weeping Angels, the Empty Child, the Silence, all instantly became part of the show's iconography because his concepts were THAT GOOD. Wrote Missy. The 50th special, again, was basically a love letter to the entire show. Brought Doctor Who to an even bigger audience than ever! It was airing in cinemas worldwide! Stuck around for s10 because there was no clear successor for showrunner position, because he loved the show that much. Took criticism to heart and always tried to better himself as a person and his writing, which - well, Doctor Who's longevity is in its willingness to change. Cast Peter Capaldi. Wrote Heaven Sent. Has written the most stories out of anyone in the show's history. Most of all, I think he understood the true heart of the series when he ends his first story with "Everybody lives Rose! Just this once, everybody lives!". He gets it. Also Capaldi run again I cannot stress this enough. (anonymous)

September 10th 1985 saw the birth of Nicola Ann Raphael.

It's not easy putting together a post like this but it's such an important subject we can't just ignore it because it makes uncomfortable reading. Believe me when I say I shed tears researching this, anyone who has lost a child will find it difficult to read this, whatever the circumstances, believe me, speaking from experience it lives with you forever.

On June 24th 2001, Nicolas mother, Rona started her day as normal, she made herself a coffee and waited for Nicola to appear from her bed, by the afternoon there was still no sign of her, so she went upstairs to check on her, it would be a day no parent should encounter, Rona knocked and knocked but got no response. Worried that something must have happened, she forced herself into Nicola Ann’s room. Sadly, she had come far too late. Nicola had taken 40 of her mother’s Coproxamol painkillers before going to bed the night before. She was pronounced dead when paramedics arrived.

As a child, Nicola was a bright, friendly child who had a flair for the unusual and a penchant for being more than a little individualistic. She had attended the local schools Millersneuk Primary and Lenzie Academy. It was when she began attending Lenzie Academy though, that things began to take a turn for the worse.

Perhaps it was because of her individualism, or perhaps it was her taste in not only Goth music, but also her Goth-inspired fashion sense, but Nicola’s fellow high school students didn’t seem to like her very much. She was bullied constantly at school, and it was a burden which she bore in silence for a very long time. Nicola Ann's is also notable in that it represented an early wave of media coverage of bullying by way of texting/mobile phones.

15-year-old Nicola Ann Raphael had committed suicide by overdose because she could take it no longer. Though her parents didn’t know it at the time, the reason for Nicola’s suicide was chiefly due to the bullying behavior of her classless classmates. They would soon learn not only that, but also that there were people who could have helped ease the verbal abuse against their daughter and did nothing.

Nicola’s suicide had shocked the nation but what was even more shocking about her death was that the teachers in her school knew about her classmates’ bullying and did nothing to stop it. It wasn’t just verbal abuse either as it turned out, but physical as well. Nicola lived under the threat of physical violence simply because she liked a certain style that they considered outside the norm. One girl said that they approached the head of the school who said it was our own fault because of the way they dressed. They went to him again and his solution was just to stay away from them bullies. They weren't reprimanded at all.

What is even more sickening about this is that even in death Nicalo was not left alone, a year after her suicide someone defaced her grave and items placed there were stolen, this is really sad as I have a friend who has had items stolen from her daughters grave, how can people do this??!!!

Nicola had been set to attend a Marilyn Manson concert a few weeks after she had committed suicide. Manson, who is an alternative icon, was one of her favorite artists. When the singer heard what had happened, he dedicated his song “The Fight Song” to Nicola Raphael and even met her mother after the concert.

In June 2003, Nicola Raphael’s story was featured on Tonight: GIRLS AFRAID “A report on the dramatic increase in bullying by girls. ” The program saw both bullies and their victims being interviewed and included an interview with Rona Raphael as well. It was designed to show two sides of the story.

Nicola was an organ donor and after her death, many of her organs were sent to folks who were in desperate need of them. Her heart was frozen and used to save the life of a toddler. A few years after her death, a BBC TV documentary on organ donation entitled Life on the List saw the Raphael’s meeting one of the recipients, a young boy named Jack.

14- Something I've always wanted to do but am scared of?

I'm in my Do It Scared Era. I just rode a 300ft drop ride and was terrified. Art School. Etc. I want to go sky diving. I'll consider my life a failure if I don't go skydiving. I want to go proper caving, the kind where you can't lift your head.

All that stuff takes money, though. Realistically, I want to hike the Chilkoot Trail and then travel up to Dawson, but I'd have to do it alone, and I'm scared that my ankle injury will act up and go out on the trail. That's my answer. I don't think you guys understand the degree to which I was insecure about my art. My sketchbook functionally has a padlock on it, and my new years resolution in 2020 was to post 10 drawings publicly. That's it, and I didn't post one. Exploring Religious Syncretism

As-Salam-u-Alaikum wa-rahmatullahi wa-barakatuh (“Peace be unto you and so may the mercy of Allah and his Blessings”)!

Religious syncretism is the practice of blending two or more religious beliefs. This phenomenon has occurred throughout history and has given us a plethora of diverse religious beliefs, rituals, and customs. Religious syncretism often occurs from assimilation and conquest. However, its origins are not always born from negative events; syncretism also comes from cultural exchange, trade, and other peaceful interactions between different religious communities.

The Ancient Origins of Religious Syncretism:

One of the oldest examples of religious syncretism is that of Ishtar. Ishtar was an ancient Mesopotamian goddess of fertility, love, and war. There is a list, known as the “Ishtar Tablet” which lists the names of other goddesses that are syncretic equivalents to Ishtar. Syncretic examples of Ishtar include Innana, Astarte (who is mentioned in the Old Testament and is my cat’s middle name), and Aphrodite.

Key Examples of Religious Syncretism:

Interpretatio Graeca/Interpretatio Romana: Ancient Greece would often try to identify foreign deities by using their own pantheon. Rome would do this same practice, especially with the Celtic pantheon. For example, Sirona is the name of a Celtic goddess. However, she was often paired with Apollo “Apollini et Si/ronae.”

Ancient Egyptian Religion: Syncretism was frequent in ancient Egypt. The god Amun and the god Ra were combined into Amun-Ra. Ancient Egypt would also combine their gods or goddesses with those of neighboring civilizations. For example, Osiris would be combined with Helios or Zeus. Whether the combination is due to religious similarities or political gain is up to historians.

Christmas Trees: Anyone familiar with the Gospels will tell you it never mentions evergreen trees or ornaments or even Santa Clause. However, these are iconic aspects of Christmas season. The Christmas tree finds its roots in pagan religious practices. The evergreen being a symbol of life in a dark, lifeless time.

Challenges and Controversies: 

Critics of religious syncretism claim that it raises questions about authenticity, purity, and the preservation of traditional practices. Some religious purists may view syncretic movements as heretical or impure, leading to tensions within religious communities, even going so far as saying religious holidays are “fake” if they are touched by syncretism.

The Significance of Religious Syncretism:

Despite the critics, religious syncretism is still incorporated into most of today’s societies, religious or not. It’s clear in the examples given, but also in the names of the days of the week (Norse paganism), names of some of the months (Roman paganism), the workday/weekend schedule, etc. Ignoring thinks simply because they have been affected by syncretism is, in my opinion, silly.

For those of us trying to find some divine meaning in our lives, syncretism can show us the overlap of everyone’s beliefs. Personally, I always hated the idea that there is only one, chosen group of people that have had the truth revealed to them. The Qur’an tells us the names and stories of some of the prophets, but not all of them. Messengers have been sent to all ends of the Earth, to all people. Their messages just get lost in time and change into different religious beliefs (almost like a giant game of telephone). In my opinion, by seeing the reoccurring themes throughout religions, such is flood stories or “golden rules” that are prevalent in many belief systems, syncretism is just one of the many tools we can use to find the “truth.” Additionally, I personally see syncretism as a way for people to see how their beliefs are not so different from others.

Conclusion:

In a world characterized by globalization and cultural exchange, religious syncretism continues to shape the spiritual landscape, offering a glimpse into the rich tapestry of human belief and practice. By embracing diversity and dialogue, we can appreciate the beauty and complexity of syncretic traditions, fostering mutual understanding and respect across religious boundaries.
