Closed Starter for @werewolfroman Where: White Oaks Dive Bar *** It hasn't been a good day. Work has been slow for a while now, and every contract that has come his way has been one Asher can't afford to lose. Of course, today he lost one. It was mostly his own fault, he knows--his initial estimates were off, quote was under, the usual--but he had tried to make it work. He needed to make it work. The customer pulled out anyway.

There was nothing left to do except get well and truly shitfaced about it.

He was well on his way, too, before Roman walked into the bar. Asher does his best to ignore him for a while like he usually does, but it's like the third rule of the universe that there is no greater buzzkill than drinking in the same establishment as one's asshole dad. Resigned, he pays his tab and hits the can before heading for the door. Two steps into the parking lot and the day gets worse...

"--Are you fuckin' kiddin' me?" Asher snaps angrily, sprinting over to rip the keys from his father's hand before the older man can climb into the driver's seat of his vehicle. It's hard to tell which one of them reeks worse of cheap liquor, but even through his inebriated haze Ash can see that Roman has no business being behind the wheel at the moment. "What the hell are you thinkin' right now?"

Life before the man called Roman is no concern to you, he is a shell of the man he once was and a ghost to those who knew him.  Instead we begin the tale of an ambitious young family man accepting the invitation to join a black operations team for the US government.  Upon the acceptance, he gained the code name Roman and that is where we will begin…

At the ripe age of twenty-eight, Roman joined a sector of the military that few people had knowledge of its existence.  Only those with certain expertise joined the ranks of this elite task force.  The mission was simple, to take out targets no one even knew existed; threats against the United States and the free world.  Over the next decade, Roman would place work as his highest priority, being gone for months at a time without so much as a word between his wife and him.  The children hardly knew their father, all they knew was he was a man with a mission and when the government came knocking, he answered.

For almost half a decade, he went on numerous missions until one fateful day the mission went in disarray.  The men and women he called family were killed next to him, he barely survived but the enemy certainly left their mark on him with the burns from the blast along his left side of his back along with the mental scars no one can see.

Roman emerged from the ashes, after months of therapy and counseling he returned home to New Orleans to his faithful wife and children, a broken man.  Civilian life did not suit Roman well; he lost all sense of worth knowing he survived while his boys and girls were buried six feet under.  Things began to unravel quickly with his inability to keep a job, his anger issues and alcoholism.  Despite his wife’s efforts to comfort him and help him through this turmoil, Roman could not climb out of the hole he was digging. 

Eventually, with the alcoholism getting worse his wife for the sake of their children had to kick him out of the house.  Over the next year, he would see his wife and children when he was able to stay sober for a few days and they tried over the months to go to counseling to help restore their family unit.

It would be the car accident that threw his family in further disarray, his wife driving home during a storm swerved off the road and hit a tree, costing her life.  It was during the mourning of his lost wife, Roman’s alcoholism and drug use got out of control, one night finding him in the wrong situation and discovering the next full moon what he had become. Although he was there physically with his children after their mother died, the spirited father lost that fire inside him and became an empty shell of a man.  Often, he was picked up by his eldest son who took care of his father and his siblings and became the stable one in the family trying to keep things afloat.

He had a position as a bouncer at  the local strip club making sure the guests stay in check and making friends with the strippers, many of them calling him papa bear.

I saw a post recently about short-term memory autistic people, but I'm unable to find it again.

So, I don't know who you are but thank you. Thank you 'cause, yeah, shout-out to autistic people who are not really able to tell you about their special interest, all informations having left their brain the second you asked question. Shout-out to all the ones who love spending hours doing researches and word documents, only to forget it when not in the action.

I'm like this. And since I'm questioning, through my official diagnosis, and even now I feel like an impostor. I feel like I CAN'T be autistic because I'm not really a walking data-base. Because I definitely have some special interests, and although I LOVE talking about it it's always so difficult to not make mistakes, giving the impression that I made-up my autistic trait. That I'm exagerating it.

I spended 3 years of my life documenting myself every day about figures of speech, and today I'm only able to tell you the basic ones. I had passion about flowers language for 2 months, and remember 4 of them. I was a mythology kid, able to teach you about greek, roman, egyptian and nordic ones on an impressive level, and now only know well the basic pantheon and famous myths. I had a BIG Undertale and Vocaloid phases, and now ? Now I'm back to normie knowledge. My brain has chosen to forget it all. Almost everything. It feels like I lost parts of me.

I'm still in good shape for my current ones. 'Cause it's moving, 'cause it's active. But after ? After I'll forget it. I'll forget Baudelaire, I'll forget Starmania, I'll forget Marauders. And I'm so afraid of that. I feel like my brain easily over-saturating is my life's tragedy. I feel like my others mental health issues encroaching on autism good traits is the worst thing that could have happen to me.

So, yeah, shout-out to me.

Alors alors. J'ai fini le bouquin. Spoilers dans la suite au cas où vous voudriez lire malgré tout (il a 4,5/5 sur Babelio, je suis juste passée à côté mais foncez foncez, c'est un premier roman, il faut encourager l'écriture, et je suis loin d'être une référence en lecture)

Donc on en était au moment où elle est hospitalisée et Alexandrin devient pote avec le papa.

Et puis ça fait ça :

- tout va bien

- elle annonce sa grossesse le jour du mariage

- tout va bien

- première écho, c'est des triplés.

- tout va bien malgré une légère inquiétude, pour rappel, elle est très malade du cœur

- tout va bien

- deuxième écho c'est des triplées. Monsieur ose raloter une seconde pcq il se voyait bien jouer au foot avec ses petits mecs. Après, il a très vite un élan de paternité protectrice pour toutes ses petites femmes.

- tout va bien.

- elle meurt subitement lors des premières contractions. Césarienne, les petites vont bien.

Alors après le décès, le personnage évolue, et c'est ce qui sauve un peu le livre à mes yeux, il y a de la tristesse, la présence subtile de Marie dans le caractère des filles, une joie légère et enfantine dans les petits détails précieux. La poésie va mieux à la mélancolie qu'au bonheur, c'est mon côté Baudelaire.

Alors je me pose des questions, pourquoi ce livre a-t-il 4,5/5 sur Babelio ? Est-ce que je suis une vieille conne aigrie ? Je n'ai pas aimé, ça ne veut pas dire que c'est mauvais, je ne me permettrais pas. Mais je n'ai pas aimé, je ne suis pas la cible, je suis passée à côté. Le texte est beau quand on aime la poésie. L'histoire est belle quand on aime que tout se passe bien. J'ai trouvé que c'était trop imprégné de clichés sur les hommes, les femmes, la vie. Le personnage principal m'est antipathique et encore maintenant je ne sais pas si c'était voulu. La fin sauve le livre mais tient en 20 pages.

Allez ⭐⭐⭐. La première pcq j'aime quand on ose écrire, la deuxième parce que la poésie est bien mariée à la prose, ça me l'a rendue plus digeste, la troisième parce que la mélancolie finale était douce à lire.

The hour was late now. So much later, the flames on those few buildings that had caught fire had finally gotten under control and, for the most part, put out. Raven's Peak downtown area was an absolute mess of lingering smoke and soot, as well as the remnants of destroyed festivities. One couldn't walk more than a couple of steps without a crunch of something under their boot. But, save for the authorities and clean-up crews and maybe a few volunteers, a good majority of the people had gone from the area.

Sheriff Smith was still out, however. She wasn't helping others, either. In fact, she'd been personally responsible for the attack of quite a few thus far tonight, and showed no signs of slowing down as she came upon the passed out figure of Roman Baudelaire.

Now what's so wrong with this one, Sheriff? A widowed drunk of a father who can't keep it in his pants... What more could you possibly want? A total catch, you ask me. In fact, let's show him how much.

"Mr. Baudelaire?" Neylani's voice filled with concern as she crouched down to check on him, "Are you okay?" Hands cupped the man's face gently. "Are you hurt?" She pet hair back from Roman's face, her mannerisms in that moment treating this person as if he was some old lover of hers. Or, at the very least, someone she cared about. And while Neylani wouldn't say she didn't care about Roman Baudelaire, it certainly wasn't in that way. The demon's behavior in that moment was in stark difference to the usual staunch professionalism in which she usually handled this man. "Oh you poor thing, let me help you."
