TOS S1E8 What Are Little Girls Made Of
Aired October 20, 1966
Stardate 2712.4
Rating - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This episode has great conflict and themes. Christine Chapel makes a sympathetic, level headed heroine. Always gotta give my TOS girls appreciation.

We get to see Kirk's strategic mind in action. I really appreciate how his strengths - understanding what drives other people and strategy - are showcased.
The conversation about the humanity of androids is compelling, and the androids' drive to live, be fulfilled and thrive is haunting. It may lack some nuance that Next Gen will explore, but it's a solid introduction to the concept.
Summary
The Enterprise visits Exo III to see if researcher Roger Korby is still alive on the planet. Christine Chapel, Korby's fiancee, joined the Enterprise's crew in hopes of finding Korby.
When Korby responds to the Enterprise's hailing frequency, Kirk and Chapel go to the surface with two security personnel. When the security personnel meet unfortunate ends, Kirk realizes Korby is not what he seems.
Well for the time - 😬🔘🔘🔘🔘
The episode implies Andrea was created to provide Korby physical pleasure. I think she's actually handled quite well, but it is uncomfortable.
I have a lot of conflicted feelings about Andrea. A very surface-level observation: her outfit is very revealing, but that's part of the show implying her purpose. And, I mean, she's serving.

So I'm ultimately fine with it.
The one thing I think is questionable is Kirk kissing her and using physical intimacy to manipulate her. She's so uncomfortable and confused in the scene, I have a negative reaction to it. But that doesn't make it an inherently problematic scene.
Kirk introducing women to love and lust to ensure his survival is so classic, and while I can think of an explanation for why she would kill Korby and herself (being jealous of Christine), I can't think of another reason she would kill android Kirk. Not having the scene would also rob Andrea of depth because it's the catalyst to her struggling with free will vs programming.
Andrea is a strong character that elicits many thoughts and emotions. Considering what she was made to do, I think she's handled with respect and compassion.
All of that to say, on the surface, I think a viewer could think this episode is misogynistic but I actually think it's pretty thoughtful.

Kirk made sure to manipulate the programming of the Kirk android, so he would be mean to Spock. As far as I can tell, this was a safety net, so Spock would be suspicious of Android Kirk when he impersonated him.
It worked. Especially because this interaction has no impact on the episode's plot, I consider it foundational material demonstrating why Spock and Kirk trust each other so much.

Something that I want in SNW season 3 is to fall in love with Roger Korby.
I want my consent concerns of Christine as his student removed (maybe they met and fell in love before they knew each other’s names?).
I want the man he was before the machine he became to be kind and witty and fun and smart and a wonderful partner for Christine.
I want Christine’s future mourning for Roger to make sense as their could-have-been shone bright and beautiful.
I want so many of my long-held beliefs about this character to be upended as we truly meet him for the first time.

I'm intrigued to see whether Strange New Worlds will actually show us anything of Roger Korby beyond just the fact that Christine gets engaged to him; because I know that, in the old novelverse, they established that Noonien Soong used the technology from the Exo III androids in designing Data and Lore, and I think that they could fairly easily tie this into the Soong family legacy arc and the "Higher Synthetics" arc from Picard season 1.

i need an extremely sexy fancast for roger korby so that i feel a little better about him being christine's fiance.
he is old and a groomer and is probably going to exploit christine's work but he can still be charming at least.

I’ve seen people complain that Chapel serving on the Enterprise under Captain Pike before she met Roger Korby is a retcon because in TOS she says that she’s on the Enterprise specifically to search for him, but I actually like her role in SNW because it’s all about developing her as a character apart from her romantic feelings for others. Plus it could be that she originally planned to leave the Enterprise in order to be with him but decided to remain because he went missing so it still fits.

I just realized this today---
Granted, the Korby we saw in TOS wasn't technically Korby. However, I always thought he had that same kind of personality. Very reserved, devoid of emotion. Almost like--
Spock?
im not a "mad scientist" im just disappointed. scientist

For Ask Trek characters anything: Seven of Nine and/or Christine Chapel
Thank you for asking, @isagrimorie! ❤️
I answered Seven of Nine here (the ask was in my inbox when you sent yours) and I also love your Q&A for Seven of Nine.
For Christine Chapel, my question might someday be answered by canon but, for now, it’s: “How did Roger change your life for the better?” We all saw the pain Roger Korby’s death causes her, but how did Roger make Christine happy, secure, so convinced of his gentleness despite the horrors of war she had witnessed that she planned to join her life to his in marriage?
I would hope Christine would tell a sweet story about falling in love, hard, and surety in her choice as she watched Roger open a window to shoo out a fly instead of smacking the fly with the papers in his hand. I would hope Christine would laugh as she reminisced about introducing Roger to Joseph — Joseph’s appraisal of critical importance — and, not even halfway through dinner, Joseph’s slight nod of approval. I would hope Christine would talk seriously about her mental state before Roger’s death and after, with Roger as someone she could truly share her fears with and he would listen.
And I would hope Christine would share how, even though it took years to mourn the loss of Roger’s love, that love continued to help Christine move forward.
It could be the opposite, though. It could be that throwing herself into an engagement was the wrong choice, Roger’s love less important in context than Christine’s own motivations for planning their marriage. In this scenario, it could be that by finally recognizing her own actions as not motivated by love that Christine was able to help herself move forward.
Bottom line: I don’t want Christine Chapel’s canon story to be one of loss after loss. I do want her canon story to be one of loss and climbing back, loss and climbing back, loss and climbing back because she’s not just going to survive, Christine Chapel is going to thrive — a strong, brassy, sassy woman whose core of care someday leads her to lasting joy. Maybe, just maybe, with an understandable delay to mourn, memories of her experiences with Roger could help Christine eventually find her version of happiness.
Send me a Trek character and I’ll reply with a question I would ask them — and, if you want, my hoped-for answer.
If you want to play this ask game, too, here’s the post to reblog.
