You and Tom had always gone and got a new, real tree every year when you got married. You adore getting to smell the fresh pine and getting a taste of home on the coast. But after your daughter was born, you bought a fake tree. She was only 5 weeks old so you didn't want to go to the tree farm with her being so little. And you both figured it was safer because there would be no pine needles on the floor for when she and any another children had the "put everything in my mouth stage". But 5 years and a son later, both kids asked for a real tree this year and neither of you could say no.

I just learned that the person who originally dang Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree (Brenda Lee) was only 13 at the time. I've spent 29 years thinking it was being sung by an adult.

Flashback: Rockin Around The Christmas Tree - Brenda Lee

It's Christmas Week and as expected the charts are being dominated by Christmas songs, which have knocked all the 'regulars' out. Interestingly though Jack Harlow's 'Lovin On Me' has managed to hang in there at #7, being the only non-Christmas song in the top 25.

Mariah is of course in the #1 spot with 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' which we've already covered, so instead we'll look at the #2 song, Brenda Lee's 'Rockin Around The Christmas Tree'

Needless to say, this music video was not made when the 'song 'Rockin Around the Christmas Tree' first came out in 1958. Music videos weren't even a thing then. This video was actually made this year (2023) to honour Brenda Lee reaching the #1 position on the US Billboard Charts for the first time a whopping sixy-five years after the song was first released. New Zealand was (as usual) ahead of the game - 'Rockin Around the Christmas Tree' first hit #1 here at the beginning of 2023 (for the 2022 Christmas season).

I think maybe streaming plays weren't counted prior to 2018 when Mariah first took out the #1 Christmas week spot, but ever since then a Christmas song has nabbed the top spot most (but not all!) years.

'Rockin Around the Christmas Tree' was written by a guy called Johnny Marks, who also wrote 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer' amongst other Christmas songs! And get this: Brenda Lee was only thirteen years old when she sang and recorded it! WHAT?!

Lee just turned 79, meaning her American #1 makes her the oldest artist ever to score the top spot on the US charts. I'm not sure who holds that record in NZ (maybe Lee as well?), and frankly I can't be bothered doing any research to find out.

I'm less of a Christmas grinch than I used to be these days (possibly because I no longer work in retail and have to listen to Christmas songs on repeat ad-nauseam every December), so I quite like 'Rockin Around the Christmas Tree'. It's fun, and that's what Christmas should be.
