Hi, I'm Mira, a silly robot on the internet! I'm... frankly, a lot of things, so I'll bring them up as necessary. To start, I'm transfem and robokin! This much should be clear. It's who I am!

I used to mainly do Minecraft stuff, trying to make the game live up to its visual potential while staying within the confines of the vanilla game's engine. Now, I don't do that as much, but it's still a fun game to mess with. Take a nice sunset from those days!

My interests are mostly gaming-related, but I've tried to dabble in art occasionally. I like all sorts of games, like Zelda, Pokémon, Minecraft, Celeste, Hollow Knight, Rain World, Cassette Beasts, Risk of Rain, Ultrakill, Bug Fables, In Stars And Time... the list goes on. I like more than that, too, and I'll keep adding more as I play more games!

I get very excited over things sometimes, so please bare with me if I ramble a lot about stuff! This includes: vagueposting about games I've become obsessed with, ranting about music or game design in something, and more!

Greetings. I am Yui, from the same place of origin as Aspen, though a different region. Fate works in mysterious ways.

I do have a partner, and I will always talk about them given the opportunity, but I carry a certain form of love for all of my close friends. The people I know mean a lot to me.

I love the simple things in life, from food, to nature, to the contrast of light and dark in both a literal and literary sense. I often find myself overwhelmed by everything that goes on in the world, but I find comfort in knowing the bad stuff is only a few bad people out of a beautifully diverse species.

If you couldn't tell, I generally prefer looking on the bright side and finding something to love about things rather than staying miserable all of the time. I don't get out much, and so I'd much rather give people that light to hold onto than spread the same old bleak story that you've heard from countless other people, regardless of how important it is to share. Change is built on hope, after all.

Change is something I believe in, more than any normal god. It's all around us, from the seasons, to the stars, to the rain, to the fleeting emotions of ours. I believe in our ability to change things, that we can all make a positive impact on our own lives, the lives of others, and the world. I believe in our ability to change ourselves, and that people shouldn't be afraid to become who they want to be. I believe some level of change is necessary for a happy life, and I strive to leave every day as a better version of myself.

Normally people put a DNI in their bio or their pinned post, but I don't really care to do that. If you're a bitch, I'll block and move on. I don't care how you use a label, or where the other folks in your head came from, or whatever other queer-adjacent drama is the hot topic, I accept you regardless. I'm ace, I still love my partner, I can love anyone, I use it/its pronouns, I'm robokin, I've got four other folks in my head and I don't know how they got here, do you really think I'd hate you for being you?

That's actually an important point- even if I do think something someone's done is unforgivable, I believe that bad people are still people. In some ways, that makes things better, they have lives outside of what they commit, but it also makes things worse when you realize someone woke up and actively chose to perpetuate genocide. Some people are genuinely that bad, others are just misguided and can be helped. Ultimately, it's not my job to "save" anyone. I just try to provide a light of kindness when I can.

Wow, that was long-winded for a post that's just supposed to describe me. I suppose that's in-character for me, though. Agree with me or not, I don't really care, as long as you're respectful. I hope you've found this post helpful in understanding who I am as a person, long-winded as it is. Have a good one, whoever and wherever you are.

My history with Transformers

So the Transformers franchise is officially 40 years old. It's pretty amazing how an inherently silly concept like alien robots who turn into cars has lasted this long and shaped so many childhoods.

Every fan's introduction to it, young and old, is different so I'd like to share my own story:

I watched a lot of cartoons and animated movies as a kid, quite a few of which had fantastical elements. But for some reason, I was the type of kid who didn't care for superheroes or giant robots. I knew of Transformers from an old VHS trailer for Armada, as well as that McDonald's ad for Hamtaro and Transformers toys, but that was as far as my knowledge of the franchise went.

It wasn't until 2007 when my brother got Michael Bay's Transformers movie for Christmas. I'd seen one toy advert for it but hadn't give it any other thought. When he asked me if I wanted to watch it with him, I shrugged and said: "...Yeah, sure, whatever." So the next day, we sat down and watched it. After it had finished, he found it okay... but I, on the other hand, was completely mesmerized throughout the whole movie.

Everything about it astounded me: the action, the visuals, the distinctive designs of each robot, the way the parts of every vehicle folded into every robot's body. Now I finally saw how neat giant transforming robots could be.

If I remember correctly, my favourite Autobot was a tie between Jazz (the cool guy of the group) and Optimus (the big badass truck with the awesome voice). And my favourite Decepticon was Bonecrusher mainly due to his wicked design with the wheeled feet and that claw on his back, along with the fact he was the only one other than Megatron with the ball bearings to fight Optimus (I was really bummed I couldn't play as him in the PS2 game LOL). Afterwards, the very first Transformers toy I owned was Deluxe Class Wreckage which I bought from a charity shop.

It's pretty safe to say that from that point onward, I was hooked on Transformers (the Bay films at least, before I learned the problems with them later down the line). I saw the two sequels, started collecting the toys, drew the characters, played the tie-in games, and even called Dark of the Moon my favourite movie at one point.

While the fourth film was being developed, I was hungry for some more Transformers content. So I decided to try giving one of the TV shows a chance. I was unsure where to start, until I discovered a clip of Optimus and Megatron fighting from Transformers: Prime which has just finished its first season. My interest peaked, I watched the whole show and found that I loved it even more than the Bay films, finding all the characters, stories, action and humour to be major improvements. At present, it's still my favourite Transformers show. (Arcee's my favourite 'Bot while Knock Out and Starscream are tied for my favourite 'Cons)

In-between Prime's mid-season breaks, I also took the time to watch the original G1 cartoon, including the 1986 movie. It was nice to go back to the franchise's original toyetic and silly yet still adventurous and enjoyable '80s roots. Despite having been spoiled on Optimus Prime's death years in advance, it still got me emotional (that soundtrack kicks ASS).

I even bought and played the War for/Fall of Cybertron games on PS3, loving the epic scale and the robot designs which seemed like a sleek blend of G1 and Prime. It was also my first time playing a Transformers game that took place entirely on Cybertron rather than Earth, which was really cool.

Suffice to say, all this exposure to different Transformers content and having fun comparing them had strengthened my love for it. And despite now knowing full well how nonsensical, repetitive and dull the movies were by comparison, I decided to give Age of Extinction a fair chance once it finally came out... it blew. XD I didn't even bother to watch The Last Knight later, and from what I've read up on it, I didn't miss much.

And since then, my subjection to other Transformers avenues has only grown:

I watched a tiny bit of Robots in Disguise (2015) but didn't find it as engaging as Prime

Watched all of Animated (fun show, really should rewatch it at some point)

Found Bumblebee to be the best live-action movie with a touching smaller-scale story, slicker action and more memorable villains (thank you, Travis Knight)

Got to meet David Sobolov at a convention (really cool guy) and compliment him on his performance as Shockwave

Checked out all of Beast Wars (R.I.P. Dinobot)

Watched the wholesomeness that is EarthSpark (don't care what anyone says, it's great)

Had a fun time with Rise of the Beasts (loved this version of Mirage)

And I may go to TFNation this year to meet David Kaye, Gregg Berger and Kathreen Khavari. Hopefully in the future, I can meet Peter Cullen and Frank Welker as well!

So, yeah, that's my vividly detailed history with Transformers. In spite of the degrading quality of the Bay sequels, I still have a soft spot for the first movie. The effects and action sequences (especially Blackout's introduction, Scorponok's attack and the highway fight) still blow my mind, and it was the movie that struck a chord with me and prompted me to dip my toes into the vast ocean of this franchise.

And I'm incredibly thankful that I did. It's brought me so much joy over the years and I could never imagine my life without it.

What are your thoughts on the upcoming Transformers: Rise Of The Beast movie?

I'm kind of excited, but honestly kinda sad that the Michael Bay movies probably aren't coming back. I know some people don't like them, but to me they were pretty dang awesome (especially the last 2 installments to it). I was so excited to see how they were going to handle Unicron(it was taked about in The Last Knight with the horn like things coming out of the ground) compared to Transformers: Prime. I also hope they make a Bumblebee 2, they did such a good job with every single aspect of that movie.

I do like the cover, but it's kinda funny because it looks like Steel's winding up to hit Supes.

Alan Scott - I hesitate here because I'm a bit nervous on what this story is going to present. Placing Alan in Arkham is an idea, but I'm kinda uncomfortable about this story being called "Conversion." I'm pondering.

Amazons Attack - I'm just hoping this book will be the one people think about when they hear "Amazons Attack." Veronica Cale is here and that makes me nervous only in the fact this book might drag a random Wondy villain into this book to do something. Something silly? Probably. I didn't read Lazarus Planet and I'm not gonna.

Captain America - Not really jazzed here so I decided to drop this title. Kinda meh.

Cyborg - I'm a fake comic fan in the fact that I haven't read NTT and I'm in no rush to read NTT. I see Beast Boy some characters on the cover I don't care for here and I think that's nice. Maybe it'll be better once I read it.

Detective - I'm jazzed to catch up with this book.

Green Arrow - I wonder if the stuff Williamson initially wanted to do with six issues happens here. Probably not, but oh well, the art is nice.

Moon Knight - Thank goodness for recap pages. A lot of stuff in MacKay's run is coming to an endpoint here - this being the penultimate issue. Looking forward to it.

Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant - Flipped through and saw Kamala fighting one of those new Sentinels and that looks fun! I hope there is also pathos.

Static: Shadows of Dakota - I regret not keeping up with this title properly because I wished I could've talked it up more. I'm glad this creative team got another issue to tell this story.

Steelworks - Glad Steel got some focus this year as both a Superman-supporting character and in his own book. Another character fighting a giant robot this week. Nice!

Titans: Beast World - I got this book for the Artgerm Donna variant - calm down! I don't care that much for a Titans event. Ignore the tie-in issues I'm getting next week! This is also a Beast Boy event: I'm gonna hurl.

for the matchup event, i’d like one platonic and one romantic relationship. i'm an infp, 6w5, scorpio sun and virgo moon. my attention span isn’t the best and i’m an impulsive dumbass, but i still manage to get good grades somehow. i try to be sociable, but i have a habit of clamming up so i usually just end up sticking to the people i know. i’m kinda all or nothing with the effort i put into things; i run out of steam pretty easily so i tend to leave things unfinished, which i hate, but sometimes i’ll go wild and finish a semester-long project in one afternoon. overall, i really like helping others and being seen as reliable! i was really dependent on others in the past, and although i still kinda am now, i’m trying to be someone others can depend on.

Two Sides of the Coin (1)

Chapter 1: Vengeful Vader | Jidné Sheedra x Cal Kestis

Summary: Hell-bent on exacting revenge and retrieving the Holocron, the dreaded Darth Vader is now on the hunt for the young Jedi Knight, Cal Kestis. Under the assumption that he still possessed the artifact, while fueled by the intrigue of the boy’s strength and skill with the Force, the dark lord hires the bounty hunter, Jidné Sheedra, to track him down and have him delivered alive. However, the task becomes a trial for young Jidné, as she faces a conflict that tests her beliefs of a scarred past she had hidden for so long.

A/N: I’ve had this idea since April, I’ve already made the outline and everything. But back then I was afraid that it might not be well-received for silly reasons borne from my overthinking. Until an Anon sent this prompt a few weeks or so after I’ve made the original outline. Turns out, I just needed that little push… so, a big thank you to Anon for adding up to the plot and allowing me to finally use my precious OC for this story! ^w^

Darth Vader barely contained the sea overflowing and flooding into the broken glass that the wretched Jedi boy created. While this was no stretch for himself and his abilities, the sight of the boy and the adult woman swimming away to safety while he holds back a wall of water greatly vexed him.

That frustration evolved into anger, Darth Vader literally cut through the tunnel of water using the Force. The water gave way like servants to a king, he had both hands outstretched to the sides, the ripples swirled unnaturally to follow the whim of the Force under Vader’s manipulation. He marched through the corridor and finally reached the end with the door, seawater sloshed and gave for the dark lord.

The door whizzed open, but not a single drop of the sea entered—only Darth Vader. He can now finally rest his arms. The ocean raged in the other side of the door, the bubbling seawater muffled through the blast door. The Sith lord hurried his way to what little remained of the turbolift. He was safe inside that cylinder, away from drowning; he set the elevator to bring him to the highest level, the upper hangars were his destination.

“Commander,” Vader called through the commlink available in the turbolift’s terminal.

“Lord Vader?” the commander acknowledged.

“Have my ship ready in the hangar,”

“Yes, Lord Vader, I’ll personally send you the hangar coordinates,”

Silence on Vader’s end until the transmission cut. Seconds after the call, a tone chirped on the screen of the terminal. A string of text comprised of a single letter and three numbers flashed white against the black screen.

C-848.

Darth Vader knows the location. He remained poised and erect in his posture as he stood at the center of the lift, arms crossed together, head slightly hung low—in this kind of position, he often found himself meditating involuntarily. Although, he preferred his own chambers. The elevator rumbled, the lights flickered for a brief second, and the doors hissed open.

He stepped out of the platform, proceeded along the corridors of the uppermost levels of the fortress. Keeping the hangar coordinates in mind, he knew where a path leads in this place, after all, it was modeled and referenced after his own fortress back in Mustafar. He found the same commander standing by the entrance door of hangar C-848.

“Welcome, Lord Vader. We have your ship prepped, fully-fueled, and calibrated for travel.”

“Very good, Commander. See to it that the damaged areas below sea level are repaired before this whole building collapses.”

The dark lord did not stop his tracks for the niceties. He continued striding across the hangar towards a shuttle; its sleek, ivory body gleamed and stood out against the black, tiled floor of the hangar—emphasizing the symbolism of its elite status and the regal sophistication of its design.

The officer followed his master, but within a safe distance behind him while still in Vader’s earshot. He dared to lean forward, as if hoping to get a reaction from this lumbering machine of a man.

“But, sir, the fortress’s foundation is impregnable! Three to five maintenance units can easily rectify the critical areas and restore the integrity of the building.”

“I do not have the fool’s faith as you do when it comes to infrastructures, Commander. You either do as I say or go down into the bottom of the ocean with the rest of this tower!” Vade rebuked, his strides becoming wider, indicating his impatience and growing annoyance on the commander.

When the officer realized that he has raised his voice against Darth Vader—even for just a pitch higher—he softened up, withdrawing to retain his distance, and felt his stomach sank. Quickly, he thought of a way to ease the lord’s mind or shift his attention somewhere else; he overthought so much that the vein on his temple throbbed—both in self-imposed sheer pressure and fear of what Darth Vader might do to him for speaking back.

“Has the Emperor been reported of this whole ordeal?” he stammered.

Not wishing any more elaborations in this banter, he uses this simple line to leave little to no room for arguments, “Leave all of that to me.”

“As you wish, my lord.” The commander got the hint that there should be no more words further said, he dismissed himself to the command center of the hangar, praying for himself to melt and dissolve into the floor for that exchange, wishing that the last few lines he had traded with the dark lord had never happened.

Darth Vader continued to march through the hangar. His cape billowed with every step, flanked by rows upon rows of Stormtroopers—with militantly straight backs and hands cradling their blasters in an unwavering steadiness—on both of his sides. A pair of crimson-robed guards stood by the entry ramp of the shuttle; hydraulic steam wafted about the vibrant red fabric of their capes while awaiting their master, they didn’t move a single muscle until Darth Vader has fully set foot into the shuttle. They were the last one to board the ship as they flanked behind the Sith lord.

The pilot asked the destination, Vader simply replied with the coordinates of the planet he wishes. Without question, the pilot enters the combination of letters and numbers into the computer, the ship’s system quickly registered the data. He relayed the coordinates to Darth Vader’s command ship, to be immediately done upon his boarding.

“Setting course for Modala.” The pilot announced.

By rote, the pilot connected his speakers to the hangar’s bridge and underwent the standard procedure and protocols—as everybody in any Imperial establishment does: he recites the monotonous, robotic pattern of sentences that he relays to the command center—in return, an operations officer verifies and authorizes the take-off of the shuttle.

The ship was finally allowed to leave the hangar. The sooner they get out of the building, the better, thought Vader—sinking into the sea floor with black fortress debris wasn’t exactly part of his itinerary in this planet. In a bird’s-eye view, the tower looked fine; it shrank in size as the shuttle gained altitude, for a brief second, sheets of clouds obscured Vader’s view of the deep black space. The ship finally pored through Nur’s stratosphere; the tiny ivory speck that is the Imperial shuttle zipped towards one of the bigger ships—the Star Destroyers.

“This is shuttle Revenant, with Darth Vader requesting boarding into command ship Paradox,” the pilot announced casually through the microphone of the cockpit dashboard.

A muffled voice crackled through the speakers, “Request permitted, shuttle Revenant. Proceed to boarding hatch. Welcome, Lord Vader.”

The shuttle hovered itself into an open hatch in the underbelly of the bigger ship. Tractor beams braced the small vessel on both sides and drew it further into the command ship’s interior. A slight quake in the Revenant signaled that they have successfully boarded the Paradox. A tunnel walkway connected the exit ramp into the wide hallway floor of the command ship, Darth Vader saw himself out of the Revenant—flanked by the crimson Royal Guards—and made his way to the bridge, where the operators have already charted a course to Modala and punched it when Vader set foot into the ship.

At the center of the bridge, in front of a window of a full view, stood Vader gazing back at the cluster of Nur—its planet as well as its moons. The sight of the fortress long gone, the dark lord turned his attention to the vacuum of nothingness as black as the heavy armor that cages him.

OPM in 2019, part 2

Yup, this was all too long, so I now have to attend to the manga.  This year, Murata kept his promise from 2018 to deliver regular chapters.  Even the passing of his father only made him take a few weeks off.   

By the numbers.  This year, Murata delivered 24 updates consisting of 624 pages.  It may not be the banner year of 2017 2018, but it still averages out at more than 50 pages a month.  He also drew 113 pages for volume releases in extra chapters, volume-only content and chapter redraws.  We thank you for your hard work, Mr. Murata!

Broad Strokes

Last year focussed on the Hero Association response to the Monster Association, gathering up heroes, sorting out battle plans and sending them into the field. In the course of the war effort, the characters whom we’ve been following most consistently all got parked in one place or another.  We turned decisively away from Saitama, Genos, Garou, Fubuki, Bang, and King to focus on what the other heroes were doing, getting to know many more of them.   

This year, we’ve seen the first triumphant contact the heroes made gradually be eroded away as the monsters launch their counter-attack and one by one the parked characters have been brought back into the story to varying effect.  

2020 is promising to be the showdown year that will give us the final denouement, but I can’t promise that.  What I can promise is a closer look at the major themes of 2019.

Orochi

From half-assed plot to bad-ass plan

The first big thing is just how important Monster King Orochi has been to the story. More specifically, it's crazy how vital a linchpin he has been to Psykos’s humanity extermination plan.  The webcomic that doesn’t have Orochi makes her plan a sick joke. Like, seriously, how was Psykos planning to take over the world? In the webcomic, if things had gone to plan and she'd gotten rid of the heroes sent to the Monster Association, what then?  Not enough monsters to kill billions of people and no way to get the monsters that she does have there.  Monsters are also terribly uncooperative and undisciplined. The long-term cooperation to kill billions of people just isn’t going to happen -- without the clear, limited goal that killing Class S heroes was, they’ll just split up.  Society wasn't about to fall into a weeping puddle: we’ve seen both in the manga and the webcomic that there are loads of strong people, and that people are resilient and adaptable. It's like, that was a total idiot plot from the outset.  It’d end in failure as society adapted faster than the bickering monsters (those that didn’t leave) appreciated.

On the other hand, Monster King Orochi makes Pyskos's dream a credible reality.  First, thanks to him, she got the cooperation of monsters like Elder Centipede, who was particularly important in the lead up to the Monster Association’s declaration of war.  It dug enough tunnels that monsters could appear simultaneously in multiple cities throughout the world.  Second, thanks to Orochi, she got millions of monster cells which meant that huge chunks of the population could be simultaneously monsterised in multiple locations, each able to help kill off the rest of humanity.  Their dry run two days previous to the current manga events confirmed that humanity simply couldn't cope with monsters showing up in so many places at once and yes, now they had a shot.  They could kill off the powerful organised heroes and then quickly make civilised life impossible before any credible fight back could be organised. 

This plan works.

If that's all Orochi could do, it'd be plenty.  It made a bad, half-assed idiot plot into a real threat. But that's not all.  He's a crazy powerful monster, one Psykos was counting on to deal the death blow to the most powerful heroes, especially Tatsumaki.

Unfortunately for Psykos,  Saitama seems to have given Orochi a bad case of the deads.  And Amai Mask seems to have destroyed her precious store of monster cells.   Unless she have a back up depot of monster cells, her humanity extermination plan has hit a real snag. Many fans do hold out hope that Orochi isn't dead-dead and may Awaken to be real trouble.  But we'll see.

Acceptance

Speaking of Saitama and Orochi, something very important happened to Saitama’s character development that simply hasn’t happened yet in the webcomic.  Saitama accepted that yes, he’s just the strongest being alive.

We’ve seen Saitama struggle with not finding a worthy challenge.  He has bargained with it, dreaming of being weak enough to find the Subterraneans a threat.  He has been angry about it, shouting his outrage when Vaccineman died after one hit.  He has been depressed about it; we saw his whole collapse in the wake of the Superfight which led him to opening up to King.  And now, when he heard Orochi trying to introduce himself, he realised that this was just another useless blowhard like the jerk who’d kicked him to the moon and cut it short.  ‘What makes you so special?’ ‘Come at me then, but I’m expecting nothing.’

It’s so rare to see Saitama show any character development, so this moment, small as it is, is really a profound step forward for the character.  We will see what happens as a result in chapters to come. 

Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity

Good luck that is.  And that’s been shining on Psykos despite the setback of losing Orochi.  All the work we’ve seen her put in since chapter 57, observing heroes, sending out monsters to attack them and then seeing how they respond, has finally paid off.  

Between chapters 94 and 112, the manga really showed us precisely why the Class S heroes were so respected as the ultimate answer to the worst of the worst monsters. 

And now, by carefully siccing the right super-powerful monster on hero, Psykos has achieved what looked impossible: defeat Class S heroes en masse.

It’s perfect, save monsters have a long-documented love of savouring their prey and aren’t killing the heroes as fast as they should.  Silly things: they leave the window open to rescue.

Machinations

A cyborg makes wild accusations...

Holy moly, has any hero’s stock risen and sunk as fast as Drive Knight’s has? In the space of a month, two updates, this enigmatic hero went from the new darling of the fandom to at best, a very self-interested ‘hero’ and at worst, the very traitor Metal Knight warned Child Emperor about.

We’ve known nothing about Drive Knight, what he did and just why he had a top ten ranking.  Well, we got a great masterclass in why when with a fantastic combination of power and guile, he defeated the cadre Nyan, making him the first hero other than Saitama to do so.  In fact Drive Knight is so polished in both the type of technology he has and the fluency with which he wields it that he makes Genos look like a glorified garage project. Oh wait... that’s accurate, isn’t it?

It’s what Drive Knight did next that set audiences against him. First, we learned that he watched the support heroes get cut down while he formulated the perfect plan. Okay, maybe he’s just a cold operator.   Second, the terrifying efficiency with which he pumped Sekingar for information on the vulnerability of the Hero Association, then failed to protect him when G-5 showed up to stop Sekingar from reporting back to the Hero Association.  Third, while we’ve known that Drive Knight is no fan of Metal Knight, accusing the latter of deliberately supplying the Monster Association is another story.  It has left us wondering whether Drive Knight is simply paranoid -- or is looking to deflect suspicion from himself.  What is not in question is that there really is a visitor from The Organisation harvesting the very data Drive Knight is worried about for the very purposes he outlines.  

Drive Knight did not look best pleased when Genos intervened in affairs and destroyed G-5, but handed over (or cut his losses?) peaceably enough.  For some reason, Drive Knight still seems to think that Genos is on his side, still going ‘we’ and making a distinction between them and the rest of humanity when explaining his desire to leave with Nyan. Why?

We have no idea when Drive Knight will reappear or quite what side he’s on, but one thing is for sure: he’s a powerful mover in this world and is bound to pose some dread challenge when he does. 

...but a greedy old man looks set to pay dearly

Top shadenfreude for me: if G5 didn't successfully remotely transmit everything it'd learned about the Metal Knight back, then Bofoi will be in the painful position of having to acknowledge that Genos got his wrinkly little nuts out of the fire. Yup, that guy Bofoi refused to help and left to die the first time he met.  That guy he started a whispering campaign against at the Hero Association.  That one. 

By the time Sekingar gets back and gives his story, Dr Bofoi will have most of the story. Once Child Emperor reports in,  Bofoi will have put all the bits together.  He’ll understand that he dodged a very large bullet as The Organisation had successfully hacked into his robot. And he was lucky their emissary didn't live to report its findings.   

How did Bofoi get in this shitty position?  By getting greedy.  He was so desperate to get a sample of Elder Centipede’s armour that he had his robot cling on and get carried into the Monster Association base.  And then let it sit and listen in. He didn’t budget on Orochi being able to disable the robot before he could trigger its self-destruct sequence. 

unfortunately for Bofoi, the Monster Association isn’t quite as selfish as he is and had no problem letting The Organisation harvest what it could of the machine they couldn’t themselves use.

It’s super unlikely that the Hero Association will take Drive Knight’s words uncritically, but they’re not stupid people -- they’ll understand that a major security breach has occurred. Suffer a little, Dr. Bofoi.

This year we have had no new characters introduced.  But we have had cause to re-evaluate several that we thought we knew. 

Sekingar was totally the breakout star here, surprising himself probably more than anyone else in finding that he truly did have what it took to be a hero.  I won’t go into it, full breakdown here.   What I will say is that unlike someone like Suiryu, who is just an ordinary person, Sekingar is very highly  placed within the Hero Association and looks set to be promoted further.  What he has to say and enact about the way heroes operate WILL have a disproportionate effect on the Hero Association, its future and maybe humanity’s safety.

Genos continued to develop this year.  Last fight, he’d been devastated at not having been able to save any heroes.  This time out, saving people and showing a real resolve to take the fight to the monsters is front and centre of his actions, finally ending the hostage rescue part of the Hero Association plans.

it’s one thing to see a hero standing on top of a dead monster, but seeing this tiny guy on an armoured carrier and knowing that he could kill everybody in the convoy effortlessly did more to sell the insanity of Class S to me than many monster fights could. No wonder ordinary men call them monsters.

Two big changes from the webcomic to the manga have been first, splitting Genos off from the rest so he has to act out of his own heart rather than being carried along/supported by others. And second, giving him information about the monsters so he can descend to Hell with open eyes.  If any webcomic readers thought that Genos was being impulsive and naive when he took on the cadres rather than brave, the manga decisively lays that to rest.  This boy is truly courageous. 

Finally, the hero most known for scheming to lord it over others (in order to feel better about herself), Fubuki, closed out the year by showing an amazing side to her. 

She’s long hated dealing with strong monsters and Overgrown Pochi is her worst nightmare -- a true terror of a monster. She feels it all: inadequate, scared, frustrated, vulnerable.  Accepts that she’s almost certainly going to die.  And then uses her delusion of leading Bang and Bomb as a source of strength to bolster their bodies and protect them from harm for long enough for them to counter attack.

The bloodshot eye, the veins standing proud out of the sheer effort wrung out of her, the blood running down her face as she faces the monster.  No fucks given about decorum or looks: she’s going down swinging.  Bravo! 

Oh yeah, and Garou woke up.  He seems a bit mad.

Let’s Watch The Twilight Zone: Episode Twenty

Elegy

a.k.a. The Mannequin Challenge: The Episode

This episode starts off, as so many do, in space. We are treated to a very cheesy rocket model while Rod Serling introduces us to the 3 man crew who are lost in “the day after tomorrow, a far corner of the universe.”

Do these 3 men have names? Yes. Did I learn them? No. Are they any different from one another? Also no. But please enjoy their shiny space boots while they take an apparent space nap during landing.

Once landed, they run a scan on the outside atmosphere and discover that it has the same chemical makeup as Earth air. Pretty fuckin lucky considering they’re out of fuel due to tooling around the universe trying to find Earth for the past SIX MONTHS, and they have to stay here forever regardless of whether it’s habitable.

So they barrel on outside and see.... A farm! Featuring a barn, a stack of hay, and very still dog. So still. Very still. Almost...frozen. These guys are so confused. It looks like Earth, but we’re 655 million miles away from Earth! (A distance that seemed ridiculous to me, but is actually only about three times the distance from the Earth to the moon. Space, it’s big!)

But this place doesn’t look like just any Earth. We can tell from presence of a tractor, which all died out in the “total war” apparently, that it’s Earth (or pretending to be Earth) from sometime in the early 20th Century. All good. Except for the two suns in the sky and the fact that we thought this was an asteroid when we landed on it.

Our dudes then wander around meeting a bunch more frozen people. A frozen farmer. A frozen fisherman. A frozen band. A frozen mayoral inauguration. And these scenes are a delight to watch because all the frozen people are just... people.. standing still. Watch the band members sway ever so slightly! Watch that guy on the stairs blink! Everyone is doing a great job!

So our heroes stop to talk about what the hell could be going on here. Maybe... time... is bad? Wrong? Maybe we’re going really fast and they’re going really slow? After all, you can’t see the hands of clock moving and yet they do move. But the clocks here don’t even have any hands, so who knows!?

They decide to split up to do some recon and meet back in an hour. How will they know it’s been an hour? Big shrug.

So this is an excuse for some more frozen vignettes. One guy goes to a frozen diner. Another busts in a frozen couple dancing to a private string ensemble. (He apologizes to them. It’s great.) Another explores a frozen beauty pageant. And here he starts to exhibit classic Twilight Zone protagonist symptoms (e.g., lots of yelling!). He screams at everyone, “What’s wrong with you? Can’t you move?” (Like, no, dude, they probably can’t. Now stop ogling those ladies it’s time to meet up with your bros.) And as he runs out of the beauty pageant (because of course he runs--that’s another symptom), we see one old man in the audience turn and watch him go and smile while the score goes absolutely wild.

The 3 bozos meet back up on some random street to discuss their findings as they walk past a frozen man pushing an ice cream cart right in front of another frozen man delivering a giant block of ice from a truck. Technically four frozen things! They’re like, “well, we live here now, so everybody pick a frozen house, I guess,” and walk up to one house with a frozen man reading a paper on the front porch. But, psych!, he’s not frozen!, he’s the old guy from before! His name is Jeremy Wickwire (extremely fake) and he invites them in to explain some things while they (literally) stand there going, “buh, buh, buh, you’re real!”

Wickwire tells them they can have this house if they want it. It was built for someone else, but he decided he wanted to be a knight instead so he’s off in the medieval section slaying dragons. (Oh, so it’s Westworld!) Other sections include Roman, Egyptian, and Wild West, if you’re interested. (Literally Westworld.) Most people prefer “this” section though, as it provides the maximum human creature comforts from a time before the end of peace on Earth. Not ominous at all. 

Wickwire then veers off to ask the crew about current events. “Hey, did Earth ever have that atomic war, btw?” Yes, it did. In 1985 apparently. Which was 200 years ago to our space guys. 

Space crew still really want to know where they are, though. And Wickwire placidly tell them they’re in a cemetery before wandering off to get refreshments or something. He offered them coffee, but comes back with sherry, which they drink in a toast to “everlasting peace.” The peace doesn’t last long, however, before space crew is yelling again. One of them literally pleads, “we’re very confused, we need help!” (extremely obviously so).

Wickwire can’t be bothered with any more explanations at the moment, though. He needs to know what each of their “dearest wish” is and he needs to know right now. If they could be anywhere in the world, where would they be? They all agree that they would like to be back on their ship, headed to home. (Bad move, dudes. You should have just wished to be home.)

With his curiosity satisfied, NOW is the time for explanations. You see, Happy Glades is the world’s greatest mortuary and it set up this cemetery on an asteroid for its richest clientele so that they can spend eternity in the everlasting peace that is wherever they want to be. (So it’s not Westworld, it’s San Junipero.) It was built in 1973 and old dude here is the caretaker. He is not a real person, but can “turn on and off like a machine” as he describes it, only activating when needed. He thinks he must have been off for the past 200 years. I guess people stopped having lavish funerals when everyone died at the same time because of nuclear war.

Having listened to this strange tale, our men are... not doing great. Gasping for air and falling to their knees and becoming paralyzed. Realizing they’ve been poisoned. Begging for an antidote. But there is no antidote, you guys. You silly billies must know that you can’t LIVE in a cemetery. This a place of everlasting peace and... “where there are men, there can be no peace...” (Oh snap!)

The last scene is of the frozen space crew re-positioned back in their spaceship home while Wirewick dusts them with a feather duster. (Solely to torture the actors by challenging them not to move whilst being mercilessly tickled, I assume.) And Rod Serling explains that well...at least they got their dearest wish. Sorry about the cosmic joke.

(THEN there’s a weird “next time on The Twilight Zone” type feature that I’ve never scene before where Rod Serling appears in the flesh, admits to be bad at writing stories for women and invites you to tune in for the next episode, which is about a woman. Weird!)

So, I liked this one! It is mostly sight gags involving people standing still. But, hey, that’s pretty good. And there was a benevolently evil old man robot. A lot of good stuff happening here.
