Congress of black writers - Congrès des écrivains noirs

From Friday, October 11 1968 to Monday, October 14 1968, at the McGill University in Montreal. Hundreds of Black thinkers, artists, politicians, activists, students, militants from all over the diaspora gathered to discuss and debated topics such as:

the history and struggles of Black people;

the impact of colonialism and racism in the “Third World”;

the meaning of Black Power in face of widespread racism;

the difference between colonialism and exploitation;

the importance of culture in the struggle for liberation;

ways to achieve a Revolution;

emphasis on oppression as a system

etc.

The event was co-chaired by Elder Thebaud the future Dominican Prime Minister Rosie Douglas and was dedicated to the memory of Frantz Fanon, Martin Luther King and Malcolm X.

The Trinidadian Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Ture) and C.L.R. James, the Barbadian Richard B. Moore; the Guyanese Walter Rodney; the Jamaican Robert A. Hill; the American James Forman, Harry Edwards, Alvin Poussait, Ted Joans and Harry Edwards, the African-Nova-Scotian Rocky Jones (Burnley Allan Jones) were among the featured speakers.

Despite playing an important role in the very existence of the event, Black women were absolutely erased and absent from the roster of speakers.

For instance, in spite of being a guest, Miriam Mabeka hasn’t uttered a word at the Congress and was completely overshadowed by her husband, Kwame Ture.

One of the Black women present were Dorothy Jean Hughes, the Haitian Adeline Chancy, the Canadian Joan Jones, the Trinidadian poet and McGill geneticist Barbara Jones.

Another issue at the event was the overwhelming number of white people in the audience (nearly half of the audience was white !).

Earlier, the congress was seen by many as a black haven in a white supremacist and dominated society, such as Richard Small whom refused to discuss strategies for black liberation in front of a white audience. The organizers ultimately settled down by letting white people in and putting in place small all-black caucuses.

Historian David Austin on the impact of the event, “For that long Canadian Thanksgiving weekend in October 1968, the Congress of Black Writers temporarily transformed Canada and Montreal into the center of the Black Power Movement. Edwards, Forman, and Carmichael’s speeches left an indelible impression on the minds of everyone who sat in the ballroom of McGill University’s student union building that day. But it was the range of black political figures that made the event particularly rich, despite the absence of speakers from the African continent, Latin America, and the French, Spanish, and Dutch Caribbean.”

He also said, “It represented a public announcement that Black people were ready to stake their place in this country. It also showed that the issue of anti-Black racism was a feature of Canadian society.”

i'm not gonna lie, the dude's completely demented and his backstory/powers are ludicrous but he's fantastic 😂💖 so. backstory. he. he had a weirdly erotic dream about gloves hanging from a tree. and when he woke up his arms were gone. but he was left with 'The Love Glove', which functions as a disembodied hand. and the Love Glove itself can pull Bobby into the dimension with the glove tree. where he can pick and choose left-handed gloves (the Love Glove is right-handed) with a variety of powers. 😭😭😭

s1:e13 - Bare Knuckles

The actual synopsis of this episode is unimportant, as I choose to sum it up as "Slim and Jess go on a date to see a boxing match."

Although, it's thanks to Jonesy going off to earn the mortgage money that we get to see Jess mending one of Andy's shirts, which is cute.

And Slim gets to do some boxing of his own later in the episode!

Let’s first address the SIX plot lines in the episode.

That’s just wayyyyyy to many plot lines, some that are trying to be established and some that are clearly just filler. IMO the most important plotlines are #1 & 2 on the list. Julia’s & Watt’s plotline could definitely be cut from this episode so we can focus more on Murdoch in Montreal & how Effie got into that tree. Violets subplot was small so I think it’s okay to keep, the few scenes with her transferring the house & revealing Carmichael’s condition.

Brackenreids plot line could be saved for a later episode but I think it’s okay if we do a little first episode rewrite!

Okay so if we eliminate Watts’ plotline we could have him helping Brackenreid out trying to figure out where his son is. I think having Brackenreid & Watts spending more time together is good because their characters are so different so it’s a good dynamic. Meanwhile Julia could be consoling Margaret. Maybe she taps into some of her psychology knowledge or criminal insight (some of that stuff she learned from Dr Roberts way back in S4/5). This way we have several characters involved in one subplot rather than having each character on their own.

This way we only have 2 main plots (#1 & 2), 1 subplot (new #4), and 1 mini mini subplot (#6). Way more cohesive and then maybe we get some stuff RESOLVED!

Hoagland Howard "Hoagy" Carmichael (November 22, 1899 – December 27, 1981)  Singer, songwriter, and actor. Robert Lawrence Crawford Jr. (born May 13, 1944)  Actor who portrayed the character Andy Sherman on the NBC television series Laramie in 1959 and 1960. He was cast as the younger brother of Slim Sherman, portrayed by John Smith, owner of the fictitious Sherman Ranch and Relay Station some twelve miles east of Laramie, Wyoming. Their co-star was Robert Fuller in the role of former gunfighter Jess Harper. Crawford's role on Laramie ended in 1960, when Andy Sherman was shipped off to boarding school.
