Taking the stage without a word, the band temporarily known as mONKEYS oN eGGNOG offered just one word - “Meat” - during the first quarter-hour of its Dec. 21 gig in Vermont.

Under cover of its temporary pseudonym, moe. let the music do the talking on the show-opener and livestream sampler while highlighting its instrumental prowess with composition and improvisation; shifting tempos; and stylistic detours occasionally punctuated with the titular noun.

This is moe. in its element, playing to its strengths, nodding to its influences and taking chances from the jump while coloring mostly within the lines of familiar melody.

Georg also knows how to captivate his audience live, whether on his first U.S. tour from Denver to Seattle, on stages on Nashville Broadway scene or the biggest country music events in Europe, such as the country music meeting berlin or the western experience in the Netherlands – the cowboy casts a spell over the audience. In 2020 Georg’s debut album “radio cowboy” was released to much praise which to date has racked up more than a million streams on Spotify alone. The official videos have been viewed over 2. 7 million times. So far, five singles have been released to radio, reaching an incredible number of 17 #1 positions on various U.S. charts. His latest radio release “this old house” just spent two weeks at #1 in the U.S. national radio hits country chart and has made the jump to #1 on the new music weekly charts. So, it will not surprise you that Georg and his co-writers are already busy writing tracks for the second album. In his Covid19 lockdown project, a Spotify podcast called “country music ain’t dead,” of which the first episode was released in early December 2020, he supported other country artists from around the world by interviewing them and then introducing them to his 450,000+ social media followers. Management companies and artists are jockeying for interview slots on the bi-weekly artist talk, which has been booked full into late summer 2021 and was published bi-monthly. On top of the struggle all artists had to face in this unexpected moment, bad news were adding up for Georg. Both of his parents got diagnosed with severe illnesses. So, he moved into his parent’s house for several months, first for supporting his mom while his dad had to undergo several surgeries with extended hospital stays, then for the caretaking of his father and for helping him to recover from the severe surgical procedures, spending the nights watching over mom and dad at their house writing new songs. “I never wrote my lyrics and recorded my vocals with so much devotion and emotion like i did for these coming songs!” Georg says followed by a deep sigh. If there’s one thing Rob proved to us with the two songs “Ghost” and “Carry The Wind” from his debut album, it’s that his special talent is to turn heartbreaking experiences into wonderful pieces of music that are outstanding. As soon as the travel ban was lifted in late 2021, Rob finally was able to plant his feet on us ground again, just to be back in the studio and record the new material, of which one new song is being published every 6 weeks from March 2022 on. With winning the New Music Award in the category “Country Breakthrough Artist Of The Year” in 2022 and being nominated for the Josie Awards in the categories “Artist of the Year 2022” and “Song of the Year 2022” (“My Mother’s Arms”, the second release of the new recorded songs), he managed to get back into his career stronger than before. Moe. Return to NYC to Play the Beacon Theatre on Saturday Night

It’s amazing to think, and maybe easy to forget, that moe. were once an upstart jam band at the dawn of a newly evolving scene that had already bred Phish, Widespread Panic, Blues Traveler and others and was soon to create seminal, unifying scenes at long-gone venues like New York City’s fabled Wetlands Preserve. Now, some three decades later, moe. are part of a still-thriving, veteran vanguard—a connoisseur’s jam-rock crew that still attacks songs with the same ferocious energy and still insists on propulsive, forward-chugging jams that don’t have much time for ambient noise or shapeless noodling. A moe. show moves.

“We’re not going to do something for 17 minutes because it’s wholly self-serving if the audience is disinterested and it’s not the right thing for us to be doing at that time,” guitarist Al Schnier said in November. “However, the only way to know is to be sort of in the moment and be present and to be a part of that, but everybody has to be a part of it. Otherwise, we’d be better off just in our garage doing this and playing this music for ourselves.”

Moe. feel fun but as the intrepid Mr. Schnier notes, the band also feels like family, especially here. On Saturday they’re back at the Beacon Theatre—a room they first headlined in the heady days of 2002—and there you’re likely to meet a few folks who remember moe. from the Wetlands or Tramps, or Nightingale’s, and maybe a few who’ve seen them play semisecret shows under aliases like Monkeys on Ecstasy—and maybe a few who have a few moe.downs or throe.downs or snoe.downs under their belt. And maybe a few who’ve seen shows with guests or themes, and maybe even a few who were there a year ago when bassist Rob Derhak played his first shows since being sidelined by cancer treatment—an emotional return that’s prompted a run of exciting new moe. originals and, as of 2019, among the healthiest and most interesting shows the band’s played this decade.

Song Review: moe. - “Ups and Downs”

Part ballad, part thrasher, “Ups and Downs” finds moe. borrowing from “Super Freak” and “Throwing Stones” to preview its forthcoming album.

Eclectic in the extreme, moe. is one of a small number of bands that could meld riffs from Rick James (bass) and the Grateful Dead (guitar) into a tender, balladic story song about a long marriage interrupted by a fiery Chuck Garvey guitar solo that has no business fitting with the harmony vocals and spare musical accompaniment on either side. But the solo does fit - like a stormy period in an otherwise-placid relationship.

There are two versions - an in-concert take recorded Aug. 1 in Colorado, and the studio track that’ll appear on Circle of Giants, arriving Jan. 31, 2025. The former is imperfect, with less-than-smooth vocals but a longer, more-spontaneous delivery than its pristine studio counterpart.

Both have their place as Rob Derhak has written a strong, introspective song from a perspective only age can provide.
