Song Review: Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country - “Lose Your Mind” (Colbert)
Viewers who caught Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country performing “Lose Your Mind” on “the Late Show with Stephen Colbert” likely came away not knowing much about the band other than it tries to approximate the Allman Brothers as led by Dickey Betts in the 1980s.
And while Donato and company do do that, they also idolize Gram Parsons, the Grateful Dead and others. Furthermore, Donato, which this clip does not demonstrate, is an uncommonly accomplished guitarist. And the musicians in Cosmic Country are multi-instrumentalists who sing lead and occasionally front the band.
So while it makes sense Donato would opt for one of his least-exciting, yet most-accessible, songs on a platform such as this, “Lose Your Mind” is not particularly representative of the things that make his Cosmic Country such a promising young act.
Read Sound Bites’ review of the band’s Reflector here and Cosmic Country’s recent Ohio appearance with moe. here.

7/5; Levitt Pavilion; Neighbor, Daniel Donato Cosmic Country, and Moe. What you can't see, but which I should have taken a picture of, was the stethocope I had hanging from my rear view mirror. I like to put it on display when I go to concerts that have an unlikelihood that I'll bump into someone I know, at my car, in the parking lot. The steth is a lovely red, and has a NY Giants steth cover on it, and a Giants sticker on the diaphragm. It was quite fitting since I had a Giants shirt and hat, and was a stone's throw away from the NY border.
Fuck, it was hot and humid like a mofo yesterday.

I feel like Moe would enjoy seeking out organizations that sell yarn made from wool from like endangered sheep because there's multiple organizations that they are trying to like keep sheep breeds like the Navajo Churro alive!
And you don't kill a sheep for its wool you keep sheep alive, and you make sure they're healthy so they make a good wool

Song Review: moe. - “Ups and Downs”
Part ballad, part thrasher, “Ups and Downs” finds moe. borrowing from “Super Freak” and “Throwing Stones” to preview its forthcoming album.
Eclectic in the extreme, moe. is one of a small number of bands that could meld riffs from Rick James (bass) and the Grateful Dead (guitar) into a tender, balladic story song about a long marriage interrupted by a fiery Chuck Garvey guitar solo that has no business fitting with the harmony vocals and spare musical accompaniment on either side. But the solo does fit - like a stormy period in an otherwise-placid relationship.
There are two versions - an in-concert take recorded Aug. 1 in Colorado, and the studio track that’ll appear on Circle of Giants, arriving Jan. 31, 2025. The former is imperfect, with less-than-smooth vocals but a longer, more-spontaneous delivery than its pristine studio counterpart.
Both have their place as Rob Derhak has written a strong, introspective song from a perspective only age can provide.

concert/cardio meet-up
Heading to a cardiophile meet-up is like heading to a concert: I’m eager to have drinks, chat it up, yuk it up, listen to music, and have a fun time. I’ll have plans and hopes, but no expectations. I’ll enjoy myself regardless of the person[s] I meet, and regardless of whether any heart play, or even heart conversations, take place. At last week’s concert, I pretty much kept to myself, and took no pictures, but had a crazy fun time. Summer concerts cometh. Road trips cometh. Boston-area shows I don’t consider road trips. Like I often do right before a concert road trip, I’ll post where and when I’m going, with the hopes that somebody might meet me on the way, out of the way, or there.  First concert road trip: Friday, July 5; Westport, CT; Levitt Pavilion. Anyone is welcome. Fun starts as early as someone wishes to meet. Steths, doppler, bp cuff, and ultrasound will be available for anyone wishing to indulge.
Last summer, before a concert, I covered the side windows of my car with white T-shirts, the windshield with a windshield cover, and the back window with a white bath towel. Nobody could see the stething, dopplering, and ultrasounding taking place in the car.  Granted, nobody was around, so we could prop the doors open, because the sun was hot, and the temperature and humidity high. The gazebo covering the car helped a lot.
“In the hands of bad, music is a weapon, but in the hands of good, music is medicine, and the way and means to the source of everything. Likewise, in the hands of bad, the heart is a weapon, but in the hands of good, the heart is medicine, and the way and means to the source of everything.” -- Funkygroovejam
