Fans of the books might recall that the Tin Woodman lived in a standard castle in Marvelous Land of Oz and his tin castle wasn't introduced until Road to Oz. In this comic, it's been 4 years since the first adventure, so I figured he'd have the tin castle by now.

In the book, Billina says, "He built it because the old castle was too damp," but that doesn't make sense! Why would the Wicked Witch of the West's castle be damp? So, I decided it's the same castle. This gave me a fun design challenge of making a friendly-looking metal castle with the general shape of a spooky castle. I was inspired a bit by the eclectic nature of castle Duckula, though that probably isn't obvious.

My favorite depiction of the tin castle is probably Andy Hirsch's design in Kovac & Hirsch's Royal Historian of Oz, which incorporates corn cob towers, implying that he shares the castle with the Scarecrow.

The alderman joke is also from Road to Oz. Jack's line was spoken by Button-Bright and Logan's line was spoken by Dorothy Gale.

A sequel to Neither Heir nor Spare (The Sole Survivor)

In which I reprise a mediocre one-off story from Batman Chronicles because I can.

Excerpt:

”With only 30 hours remaining in the federal deadline, evacuation in Gotham is well underway. The National Guard—”

“Do you really have to listen to that?” Helena asked. She was perched on the edge of a half-ruined building, watching as Gotham bled out below. The city had survived the quake—struggling, sure—but she was still there until DC decided that they wanted to finish the job.

In her ear, Barbara hummed and turned down the radio. “We need to know what they’re saying if we want to counter it.”

“And how are we supposed to do that?” If Bruce Wayne had still been Batman, maybe there would’ve been a chance. He had money. He had connections. Sure, Helena had money, but it was the dirty kind. If he’d still been Batman, they probably wouldn’t have gotten into this mess in the first place. “You’re staying here, aren’t you?”

“Yes, but I can work from anywhere.”

Helena wasn’t leaving either, but that was what being Batman meant: going down with the ship. “I still think it sounds like a lost cause.”

“And isn’t that every day of our lives?”

“I guess it is.” She was going down with the ship after all. (Helena would’ve stayed in Gotham even if there wasn’t a Bat on her chest tying her there.)

Down below went buses, trucks, and cars. People on bikes and pedestrians on foot when there were no other options. All of them heading in the same direction: out towards the bridges. Out of town. Something about the picture itched at her. Not something that was there, but something that wasn’t.

It clicked. Helena swore under her breath. “O, I’ve got to go,” she said. “Need to check something out.”

“Good luck,” Barbara said.

Helena muted the comm and jumped out into the dusk.

Technically, Helena Bertinelli was still employed by the Gotham City School System, and she would remain so for the next 29 or so more hours until it ceased to exist. Practically speaking, Helena hadn’t actually done any teaching in months. They’d converted Grant High into a relocation center for children separated from their families and people displaced by the quake. They were supposed to finish evacuating today. One last bus of kids going to foster homes in other parts of the state until any family could be found.

She hadn’t seen the schoolbus. It had been scheduled to leave the city over an hour ago, but Helena hadn’t seen it, and that meant that it was either running behind, or something had happened to it.
