need more fics where Ghost is obsessive. where he’ll kill for Johnny, where he *does* and he does it well. where hes fucked up and unhealthy but does it so casually, so without a thought. too used to a fucked up life to know the difference anymore

Recently extinct species make me sad for all the usual and normal reasons (loss of life, biodiversity and unique life forms that experienced the world wholly uniquely and acted in it like no other, to name three), but a big thing that also makes me so sad is the forgetting that comes right after. Many endangered species are greatly ignored to begin with whilst alive of course, which is awful, but the way that extinction also causes us to forget. A species could’ve been so abundant a hundred years ago, people would’ve used a fish species or a tasty plant for food, or parents would’ve warned their children to not put a poisonous toadstool or insect in their mouth, a diver would exclaim, “Aha!” after emerging from the shallows holding an especially big bivalve, or someone making a species diary would sketch out a local bird or fasten a single flower to the page. But.. then the species goes extinct. It doesn’t exist anymore. None of these events, these actions happen anymore. Not with these species. The people who had these experiences dwindle out and they may not even realise that their experiences were among the last of their kind. And we forget.

vi and jinx both really like sour candies but the difference is vi is normal abt them and jinx will eat an entire bag of warheads in an hour or less

you can tell if vi likes you bc food just. starts appearing in your general vicinity. this is an extension of "she brings caitlyn food bc she overworks herself and forgets to eat"; i think she does that w everyone. she visits ekko and an apple has just "magically" appeared on his work table. jinx shows up to torment her and finds a lil pack of cookies slipped into her bag later on. its the older sister in her (and growing up w some level of food insecurity)

i think ekko would be into music! goes to a lot of concerts, has strong opinions on the local music scene

vi eventually does manage to get caitlyn to try jericho's food. she Hates it but it means the world to vi that she at least tried, and they find places they both like in both cities eventually

mel and jayce make a funny couple to me bc i think that when the situation arises neither one of them is going to kill a bug. they're both going to scream and not help at all

viktor is so good at cards. he knows so many card games and he's so good at all of them

DANDELION JELLY:

Ingredients

* 2 cups dandelion petals, lightly packed * 4 cups water * 4 cups sugar * 2 Tbs. lemon juice * 1 box powdered pectin

Instructions

1. Three or four big heaping cups of heads yields about two flat cups of petals. Big open blooms are better than little or half-open ones. Use your thumbnail to cut open the green base of flower and peel out the petals just above the undeveloped seeds. It will take about an hour to get two cups of petals, once you get the hang of it. Pick out any stray green bits: too many left in the mix will make the jelly yellow-green instead of gold. 2. Pour 4 cups of boiling water over the flower petals. Allow them to cool and then place into the fridge for at least 24 hours. Up to 48 hours is okay. 3. Strain the flowers well and squeeze out as much dandelion tea as possible. Make sure no petals remain in the juice, as they could decay in the jelly and shorten the shelf life. 4. Place into a large pot your 4 cups of dandelion tea, lemon juice, and pectin. Bring it to a boil while stirring the pectin. 5. Add sugar and return to a boil while stirring it smooth. Boil the jelly for 1 to 2 minutes. 6. Remove from the heat and pour into canning jars. Let cool on windowsill if possible and pop into fridge. Unless properly sealed with professional canning techniques, do not ever leave homemade jelly at room temperature, and consume fridge jelly in one or two months. Jelly can be frozen if it’s set right, but only thawed once, so several small jars are better than one big jar.

so for my whole life my grandma has never put hot or warm food in the fridge, she always sets it out to cool first, she is so beholden to this rule that she will under no circumstances ever break it, to the point she gets irate if any of us break it

I never understood this, because I have always put food in the fridge whenever I was done with it, and it never gave me any problems

I thought it might have been some theory about it affecting bacteria growth in the food, like she thought it would go bad quicker, or maybe she thought it would mess with the taste or the texture or something, if I asked her about it she'd say something like 'it's just not how it's done'

so I thought it was just an old people thing

but tonight I found out my friend does it too, (this actually directly caused both of our pizza leftovers to become cockroach ridden because they were left on the counter to cool), I asked why they didn't put the pizza straight into the fridge and they told me they had it drilled into their head from childhood to never put hot food in the fridge

I go home and I talk to my mum about it, she says at some point she got curious about why my grandma was so adamant about it and looked up if there was any merit to it

y'all it's not about bacteria, it's not about food quality at all

it's about the fridge

back in the ice box days, hot food in a fridge caused condensation, which caused ice build up on the walls/roof of the ice box, which would then have to be chipped away, they didn't put hot food in the fridge because they wanted to reduce the amount of ice build up, which would reduce how often they had to chip it away

so if you were brought up to never put hot food in the fridge, now you know the truth, and you can put your dang food in the fridge instead of giving the cockroaches the feast of a lifetime

Thinking about Roach whose love language is food. Baby boy was raised with an overprotective mother who wouldn't let him leave the table until he had at least two plates of food. Raised with one of those Southern grandparents who makes him all sorts of foods when he comes over and sends him home with two pans of cinnamon rolls for the whole family. Raised with a love and appreciation for food and the love that can be shown and given through food.

So food is part of his love language. Roach joins the 141 and immediately he can tell that these guys don't eat enough. They all look strong as hell, they all are strong as hell, but he notices how little they actually eat.

He notices Price skipping meals in order to try to get more paperwork done. He notices the aversion that Ghost has to most of the foods the cafeteria serves, and how little he eats because of it. He notices the way that Gaz gets so busy and focused that he just forgets to feed himself. He notices the way that Soap tries to avoid eating as much as possible and, when he does, that he's monitoring every bit of what goes into his system. He notices the bad relationship that the rest of the 141 has with food, and he says absolutely not.

So Roach starts slowly working them up with meals. He starts bringing lunch to Price's office. He buys little containers for it that look like the ones from the cafeteria and he makes a good sized meal and he starts bringing them to Price around lunch and dinner. He makes them all meals that can easily be eaten while working on something else. Easily eaten and little mess. He notices the healthy weight that his captain puts on with absolute delight.

He starts taking notes of what foods Ghost will and won't eat, what flavors and textures he hates and which flavors and textures he likes. He pieces it together through watching Ghost in the cafeteria, offering him different foods, and just straight out asking him in some cases. Eventually he has a full list and he starts making Ghost meals with only textures and flavors he likes. He puts them in the little cafeteria boxes with care, making sure there is no chance that the foods will touch or mix together. With the foods that Roach is giving "from the cafeteria", Ghost starts eating more and Roach notices how much happier he seems.

He begins a little ritual of finding Gaz and asking him to join him during meals. Gaz forgets, so Roach reminds him. If Gaz says "yeah I'll come in a minute" or anything similar to brush Roach off, Roach will simply wait for him. His presence is able to get Gaz to finally leave whatever he's doing and go to eat. They start a routine of taking their meals together and Roach watches with nothing short of pride as Gaz devours his breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Roach starts small with Soap. He has to. Its healthy deserts and sweets and healthy big meals. He tells Soap what's in them and watches with dissatisfaction as his friend monitors everything that he eats, making sure he's well beneath his calories for the day. Slowly, Roach starts asking him to try things he's made. Just a bite. Just a bite of a brownie won't hurt. Just a bit of a cookie. And every time that Soap does, Roach praises him.

Roach makes sure to give praise any time Soap eats something without monitoring his calories, without counting. Any time Soap brings it up during meals, Roach distracts him. He asks him some question about the explosives he'd been working with. When Soap gains weight, Roach compliments him. Roach tells him how pretty he is. He tells him how beautiful he looks.

He takes Soap out for ice cream, for dinner, for any treat he can think of and they eat it together. They split things and Roach always makes sure to get "full" before he's finished his half. He always makes sure that Soap just isn't thinking about the fact that he's eating.

And it works. Bites of brownies go to the full thing, half meals go to full meals, occasional treats turn into common treats. And Roach compliments Soap through it all. He builds up his confidence, he makes sure that the other man isn't scared of gaining weight. He makes sure that Soap knows that he's quite possibly the prettiest man that Roach has ever seen in his life. And when Soap is no longer worried about what he's eating, when Soap is finally enjoying his food, when Soap has a better relationship with food, Roach doesn't think he's ever felt so happy in his life.

Roach's whose love language is food. Roach who refuses to let the people he cares about continue to starve themselves. Roach who slowly works to improve the 141's relationship with food. 💙

Fic Rec: Chef's Best by Hideous_Sun_Demon

I wanna rec this with a whole post instead of just having it marked as a rec in my bookmarks, because it's gen and I know a lot of times people are usually searching through ship tags and miss gen fics, and I think it really deserves some attention!

It's about Roach figuring out how to feed Izzy post-toes. It's expertly in character for everyone, not just the fic's own main characters but everyone that features in it. Roach felt fleshed out and extrapolated from canon rather than just wholesale made up to fit the author's needs, which I loved very much (and which, in my opinion, usually results in a more interesting character anyway, not too softened out). I think Ed and Lucius both stand out excellently despite having I think one actually relevant line each lmfao, and Stede was great and not too sanded down into perfection either! Basically I loved everyone.

It also just has some really great turns of phrase and sentence construction that I liked, but idk if y'all would really care about that as much lmfao.

I haven't left my comment yet because I read it for the first time on my phone, but I plan to read it again and comment as I go!

Author's Summary:

Roach takes pride in his cooking, and if anybody turns their nose up at it - well, that's a personal attack. So, when Izzy refuses to eat any of his food, he's determined to get to the bottom of it.

Warning for cannibalism of course, but not only the canonical forced autocannibalism incident(s) but a pretty detailed recollection of past survival cannibalism as well. Also some pretty gross vomiting, and a sort-of poisoning.
