Always love it when I see people making pre-mutation(and even pre-moviestar) Lou act a lot like Leo. It's literally my favorite thing. Like father, like son- wait-

I’ve gone on and on about how Leo wants to be who Splinter finds is the ideal person (which just so happens to be Splinter’s ideal version of himself) but I have yet to really touch upon how Donnie is the one who most directly parallels Splinter himself to an honestly shocking degree, Raph’s taking from Splinter’s teachings and parenting has resulted in an unhealthy mixup in the different dynamics of a family versus a team, and Mikey is the one who is simultaneously the most focused on family and the most intrinsically himself which both leads to his better grasp of mystics and honestly what just might be the healthiest dynamic with Splinter.
#rottmnt#rise of the teenage mutant ninja turtles#rottmnt headcanons#it’s late so I’m just speaking from the top of my head haha#anyway yeah#the Donnie Splinter parallels are crazyyy tho#I always see ppl say Leo is just like splinter but no Leo WANTS to be like splinter but he’s more a Karai#meanwhile Donnie exhibits many of Splinter’s traits and behaviors#basically Leo has taken on many perceived Lou Jitsu attributes#including his stance his most flaunted skills and his overall demeanor#while honestly being more of a quiet and determined soul at his core that is most like Karai - with the same hope and love for family#we see the more Karai aspects of Leo throughout the series but most blatantly with Future Leo’s portrayal and how Casey Jr talks about him#Donnie though - rather than Lou Jitsu he has many Hamato Yoshi attributes#it’s funny too because Donnie ALSO parallels Draxum in many ways#(you know who else does albeit to a much lighter extent? Mikey)#make no mistake I super wanna get into Raph having a hard time separating team and family and just sorta jumbling them together#but that mindset can be unhealthy!#SHOULD I GET INTO HOW RAPH ALSO PARALLELS HAMATO SHO IN SOME WAYS AS WELL AS ATSUKO#not to mention his direct parallels to OROKU SAKI HIMSELF#and Mikey - I actuallly have a touched briefly upon how his individuality and sense of self has led to his greater control of mystics#but I do think it’s interesting that he has arguably a more healthy relationship with splinter than the others as well?#idk it’s late#and I may be talking about nonsense BUT#I gotta stop here bc I’m very sleepy but I’ll probably be back in these tags rambling more later lol#would just like to add that splinter loves them all very much he is just a flawed and depressed man with a lot of untapped trauma#which unfortunately ends up affecting his boys to different degrees

those are all so interesting! sho chasing him around the world bc the writers did say yoshi became cosmopolitan during his fame, is so funny and kinda sad. yeah, i'm pretty sure its canon that sho and yoshi were the last hamato bc in end game, foot lt says yoshi is the "last descendant". i hc that yoshi has struggled with depressive disorder since his mom left. being told he had to save the world and all his plans being overun by his hamato destiny did not help. but sho (in typical asian fashion) was like "depression isn't real, get a hold of yourself" (sho was also depressed bc of atsuko's death but he was in denial). big mama soothed it during the time yoshi dated her but then obvi, his depression came back 100x worse during his captivity and stayed quite severe to this day (being a mutant really sucks also how is he supposed to be a dad when he never had a dad really???)
yes! share you big mama hcs 😁 did you know she was with yoshi for 11 years (probably)?? in many unhappy returns, it says they met in 1984 and the writers said she kidnapped him around 1995. i feel bad for yoshi bro (I still love big mama tho) i know fans want her to have a fake human name but i think it's funnier (it's also canon) that she just went by big mama bc yoshi didn't care that she was purple and had yellow eyes and ate bugs and talked weird af so why would he care about her odd name?
I definitely agree with the depressive disorder, as someone who also has on and off depression. I also think he has AuDHD which could be part of why he did bad in school. I also agree that Sho didn’t see them as real problems, which I think is part of the reason Splinter is so cut off when it comes to talking about his feelings, or opening up in the slightest.
I think his depression got a lot worse sometime after the overtaking parts of parenthood were over and the boys started becoming a lot more independent and self-sufficient. Then he like crashed from the last, basically 45+ years of his life.
I’m still trying to figure out how such a loud and proud personality didn’t tell his sons about his days in the sun. I can only think it has something to do with his mother leaving, or him trying to forget. Also can’t figure why he changed his name to Splinter of all things. It was probably the boys fault- somehow, or possibly just poetic. New life, new name.
Tbh, Big Mama and Lou Jitsu, despite all their flaws, are my favorite couple. They’ve spent like half their lives together. I think Big Mama is a younger Yokai, perhaps only a couple years older than Yoshi himself. This is opposed to Draxum who I think is well over 200. I think she has commitment issues, but her and Yoshi bonded over their drive to create something spledifirous. I think she spent her time on the surface being a rebel, just like Lou, hiding away from some like rich Yokai family who wanted her to inherit the family business (their chain of hotels). Just another reason to bond.
This one’s silly, and I kinda stole it from someone else on the webs, but I think Big Mama and Lou Jitsu both got really into the renaissance while they were dating. Hence Splinters names for his son being the splinters of their relationship. Haha.
I think the battle nexus is relatively new and was started with Lou Jitsus kidnapping. It just got a lot of attention. And with her champion, a lot of other Yokai joined to get a chance at beating up the human, which backfired for them.
After a couple years of fighting, and winning, I think Big Mama laxed up on her rules. They were still kinda dating and would spend time together and tour the Hidden City and such (cause how else does he know so much?). Up until the last year, before the boys, when he once again requested more from Big Mama and wanted to stop fighting, so he wound up back in his cell. He declared he was a pacifist so he wouldn’t have to fight anymore, cause he knows she’s tricky but he’s still a little too dumb to figure things out.
Because I think the battle nexus is new, I also think her going back to the hidden city to take over the family hotels must have some cause and effect. So I think a family member died, which caused her to flip out like she did when asked to marry. That and her commitment issues (which also cause her to change the deals at the last second). And allowed Lou to “forgive” her when the “got back together.” He clearly still has resentment, but not to the point of hatred (cause they still got that chemistry in the show). They might be a little perfect for each other. 🙂‍↕️
If Big Mama was going to have any other name, which I’m fine with her name being what it is but it feels much more like a title, or perhaps originated as a pet name from Lou, than an actual name; I would think it’d be Tang Shen. Only cause other tmnt iterations have Yoshis ex wife be named that, but I think it’s fitting as well. Understandably, I get why she might keep it hidden and a secret, because, just like Lou, wearing masks is sometimes easier than facing the truth.

Oh interesting. Rewatching the ROTTMNT series finale, and I didn’t realize before, but the Hamato family scroll, and Karai’s sword, both have the same aesthetic style.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both red, dark red, and gold - my screenshots aren’t good but they even both have a fine, dark red cloud pattern on the red parts.
I wonder if the scroll was written by Karai herself...

Thank you for answering my ask! I love everything you wrote, it was so fun to read!!
Sho casually visiting (because if he acts different now, then he's gotta acknowledge the loss and that hurts too much so he sorta acts like nothing happened) The Park. Conversely, Yoshi being highly reactive about it. He doesn't understand how Sho also isn't overcome with intense emotion when he sees That Park. Yoshi thinks Sho acts so callous and distant concerning Atsuko while Sho thinks Yoshi is unnecessarily irritable and snappy. Hamato sacrafice, that's what we do. Like "dude, all I did was mention your mom, it's not a big deal" and Yoshi's like "IT'S EVERYTHING."
Yoshi's classmates kindly invite him to yozakura with them and he just stares at them and is like "I'd rather die 😐" and they're like "shit, ok, damn, we just asked 😟" Since he doesn't give context, they just think he has a weird hate for cherry blossoms
I think to some extent Sho was much more entrenched in the ideas that you don't mourn the people you lost because they were following the Hamato way. He's much more focused on doing one's duty and being prepared for the potential return of Shredder, and it kinda makes me think that Atsuko wasn't the first person Sho lost in a similar manner. He's so intentionally nonreactive in that scene, letting her say here goodbyes and without speaking or moving. He doesn't like it either but thinks it has to be done.
And that's where he and Yoshi's relationship starts falling apart, because Yoshi didn't see his mother's sacrifice as something that had to happen, while Sho did. Yoshi grieves for a mother who's dead, while Sho mourns a daughter who had to leave for the sake of duty.

Something that I think is kind of interesting is what Rise did with the traditional Leo & Splinter dynamic, throughout the different iterations of TMNT Leo is usually the one to take after Splinter the most & the same is true in Rise as well.
Tumblr media
Leo: Relax. We’ll do what we always do. Ninja in, ninja their faces, ninja out.
Tumblr media
Splinter: Once the hounds sniff out the boys, I ninja them out!
It’s been shown that Leo can often have a similar style of both talking & thinking as Splinter has as in the movie Leo was also shown to say similar phrases to things that Splinter had said in the show, Leo’s original plan to save Raph being to ‘ninja in, ninja out’ is also similar to Splinter’s plan to save the Turtles in the episode End Game.
Tumblr media
Leo: Sorry, I missed that. Can you repeat everything from... well, everything?
Tumblr media
Grandpa Sho: Yoshi! You never listen to me
Splinter: What was that? I wasn’t listening
It has also been shown that Leo has some of the same avoidance tactics as Splinter as in the movie Leo expresses a similar actions when he is trying to avoid talking to Raph about being the leader of the team that a young human Splinter expressed when he was trying to avoid his destiny as a Hamato to spend his life protecting the world from the Shredder.
It is also possible that Splinter also might have trained primarily with a sword when he was younger as we see a sword in a young Splinter’s bedroom similar to how we sometimes see swords whenever we are shown Leo’s bedroom.
Tumblr media
There have also been a few people who have pointed out that Splinter had a similar pose in the episode Turtle-dega Nights: The Ballad of Rat Man when throwing Donnie as the future version of Leo did when throwing Casey Junior through the time gateway.
Tumblr media
Future Leo: Casey, when you’re done saving the world, do me a favour. Grab a slice!
Tumblr media
Splinter: Bring home the win boys
Members of the Rise team have also said that putting Leo in a Lou Jitsu outfit in the episode Many Unhappy Returns was also partly meant to be symbolic on how Leo is the Turtle most like a younger Splinter
Tumblr media
However though Splinter & Leo share a lot of similarities unlike most iterations of TMNT where those similarities make Leo arguably the Turtle closest with Splinter, in Rise those similarities actually cause Leo & Splinter to clash with one another.
Tumblr media
Leo: What do you even know about training anyway? You’re just a rat
Tumblr media
Leo: Trust me
Splinter: I do not!
Tumblr media
Leo: No! I’m not going back to whats-his-rat
Tumblr media
Splinter: Oh why did I ever trust you to handle this? My other sons would’ve taken this seriously!
There are a few times in Rise where Leo & Splinter clash where Splinter seems to not like Leo’s attitude or Leo seems resentful of Splinter however even though the two clash there is still a lot of love between them both.
Tumblr media
Leo: Dad was right, and we were so mean to him
Tumblr media
Leo: Locked in a cage, failed in our mission, held for ransom by the Foot, and none of us gave him grandchildren! Somehow I think he wanted more
Leo is shown to regret whenever he lashes out at Splinter & seems kind of visibly upset at the prospect of disappointing him
Tumblr media
Splinter: Where is Leo? And, uh, Future Boy?
Tumblr media
While Splinter has shown concern over Leo’s safety & has literally fallen to his knees in grief at the prospect of loosing Leo.
Splinter & Leo both love each other in Rise but I think it is kind of interesting where Rise has taken what previously made Splinter & Leo so close in other iterations & instead caused them to clash instead

Rise of the TMNT is my current hyper fixation and I’m loving your AU.
I am curious about your version of Shredder/Saki. What’s his beef with Splinter in this AU? I know you’re using a lot of 2012 Shredder and a bit of IDW for him.
Also, what were his views/interactions/plans regarding the other turtles? I personally figure he planned on eventually having Leo kill Mikey and Raph, but maybe sending someone else to kill Donnie. Just to be safe. He spent a lot of time grooming Leo to be his pawn and that would be wasted if Donnie decided to blow them both up or something equally insane.
bad guy lore. Please!
Below is a bit from the big timeline located in my EW master post! Saki’s hatred is really based off being lied to for his entire life, and later finding out his parents were murdered by the man who basically raised him like a son. Regarding Yoshi, Saki’s mad at him for abandoning him to go run off to America. They were raised as brothers, but when Saki found out the truth, he killed Sho so quickly that it wasn’t very satisfying, so Saki vowed to end the Hamato clan.
Saki didn’t know about any of the turtles at all until Kitsune brought Leo before him. But even with the knowledge that there were two more out there, Shredder was only focused on poisoning Leo against Splinter—that was his main goal. He figured they’d be eventual collateral, but that he had enough control over Leonardo he’d follow any commands to kill them without question. But this hubris is what ultimately leads to Leonardo retaining a fond view of his brothers, and then finding the strength to leave to keep them safe.
And Saki had no idea that Donatello was related.

Rat Sons AU: Character Introductions
Hamato Sho aka The Ancient One
Tumblr media
more rambling & sketches:
Tumblr media
(Had a bit of fun merging 03's Ancient One with bits of Rise's Splinter and Grandpa Sho, then started working on his origin story and was like fuck it! Guardians from 03! But for the Council of Heads from rise! but who are actually kinda more like the Ninja Tribunal from 03!! if they oversaw the world like the Guardians/Utroms! but were also kinda corrupt and uncaring of the lives of mortals and
the good news is now theres world building lore happening i guess, not just character lore??? is that good news??)
anywho, this is Grandpappy Sho!!
He's a little bit of a gremlin. Kinda rude, kinda sarcastic, kinda feral, and kinda very much had it with catering to the rules of 'polite society.' Basically, dudes survived some shit and has now decided that he will make that everyone elses problem too (/affectionate)
He lowkey resents his lineage and how he was raised, in the sense that he often wonders what life he could have lived if his youth was not fully devoted to "becoming someone worthy of the Hamato name." But he's actively trying to let go of all that and focus on being whoever he wishes in the present. Hence, gremlin.
A gremlin that is also, however, a freakin fantastic father figure (he swore to himself that his girl will literally never have to think about 'earning' any name, Hamato or otherwise; if she wants it, it is already hers, and wether she choses to keep it is entirely her own choice)
lol a lot of that was in present tense wasnt it? but yall know that aint quite true.....
tho, it might not quite be wrong exactly either...
[rat sons au masterpost]
(easier to read/separated contents below the cut! (super long))
—————————
HAMATO SHO aka THE ANCIENT ONE
Page 1:
Pronouns: He/Him
Age:???
Color Motif: ~desaturated sea foam green~
Last heir of the Hamato Clan lineage (by blood, at least)
As a young man, he spent decades training tirelessly to become a master of ninjutsu, molding himself into a perfect soldier, fully dedicated to maintaining his family's status as one of the most powerful names in Japan
Was selected to become a Guardian — an elite warrior chosen by the immortal Council of Heads to serve as an agent of their will. He served them for several years, increasingly resentful of their corruption and disregard for mortal lives
Abandoned his post after the death of a fellow Guardian (Tang Shen's biological father)
Disillusioned with both the Council of Heads and the world at large, Sho shifted his priorities from serving a 'Greater Good,' to serving his own needs and desires (and those of the people he cares about). He became very openly sarcastic, cynical and crass (he also found the way this horrified the neighbors to be freaking hilarious)
Did not think he would be well suited for caring for a child and really only expected to serve as a temporary shelter for Tang Shen until a proper family could be found for her, like maybe a few months or so at most?
Jokes on u, old man. Guiding a young Tang Shen through the routines of their daily life, watching her interact with the animals of the farm, teaching her how to do tasks so mundane he'd long since stopped thinking about them, Sho found he enjoyed the role of a parent more than anything else he'd ever done
Given his own experiences with abusive powers, Sho raised Tang Shen to be a very independent thinker, encouraging her to pursue her own sense of right and wrong, and to always be wary of those in power.
Though he trained her in both ninjutsu and the mystic arts (the good kind), Sho's greatest hope was to raise Tang Shen to make her own choices, and enjoy a life free of ancestral burdens or any ghosts from his past
Tumblr media
Page 2:
Tumblr media
As a Guardian, Sho underwent what he would later call an 'involuntary spiritual awakening.'
This granted Sho use of the Council’s powerful mystic techniques through the manipulation of his own spirit and will. These teachings were a highly coveted secret, granted only to those in the final stage of becoming a Guardian, and they were often deadly to learn
The Council taught that a human could only access the mystic arts if granted the ability through Their own will, that the technique was one of faith, a sort of forfeiting one's own spirit in exchange for power
Sho, along with Tang Shen's bio dad (oomph he needs a name), discovered a way to refine the techniques of the Council, to create their own source of mystic power without the Council’s influence, pulling from their own faith, emotions, and spiritual connections
Naively, the two told the Council of their findings. They believed that this new method of accessing the mystic arts would be a great benefit to both current and future Guardians, as it was far less damaging to the human body and mind
The Council disagreed.
Weapons that do not depend on you for ammunition are weapons that can turn against you, after all.
