Alas! Broadway star and legend Chita Rivera has died aged 91.

My cat is named for her, and it's a funny story I feel I should share. See, in 2007 or so, Dude was working for the local alt-newsweekly (remember those?) and during the time he was there, Chita Rivera was scheduled to come to Buffalo for a show. The theatre editor was so excited about this that he insisted on having a 52-week countdown on the theatre page, which annoyed the graphic design department enormously because that page otherwise had a static header.

But it became a running joke. "ONLY FORTY-NINE WEEKS UNTIL CHITA RIVERA!"

The theatre editor was so excited he commissioned a mural of her to be painted on his dining room wall.

I'm not sure how this came about, but somehow she was offered and accepted an invitation to come to his house to dine on the night she was in town. I cannot imagine painting someone on my dining room wall and then inviting her over, but I also have never been the theatre editor in an alt-newsweekly; there are many things I have not experienced in life.

In the midst of this, that's when Dude and I got our kitten. It was like-- of course we had to name her Chita. So we did. But not just Chita. She's Chita Rivera, which confuses the vet enormously, because neither of us have the last name Rivera. "She's not related to us," Dude explained patiently to the vet receptionist, who did not find this enlightening.

Anyway-- she was apparently a wonderful guest to dinner, the show she came to do was delightful, it all went swimmingly. She apparently was not at all disconcerted by the mural of herself, which I suppose if I were a legend I might also not find that disconcerting.

And while she was there, she told them her margarita recipe. I have made this recipe on several occasions and please serve it over a lot of ice because it will kill you otherwise. It is refreshing and actually really delightful to drink. It does not taste as strong as it is. It is incredibly strong.

Lo: The Chita Margarita, in memory of the realest of them all.

Take 1 can of limeade concentrate and empty it into a pitcher. Refill the empty can with tequila, and add that to the pitcher. Now refill the empty can with cheap beer-- Corona will do, something pale-- and add that to the pitcher.

Voila! No, this cannot be scaled down. Please serve it over ice.

5.16 The Body

Buffy, Dawn, and their friends deal with the aftermath of Joyce's death.

The purposeful removal of music for the whole episode, the grief portrayed, the portrayals of people with varying amounts of interaction with death. It hits so hard.

This episode killed me. I have never watched anything that has fully emcompassed the feeling of loss and what it's like to experience death close to you than The Body. It is an absolute gut punch in the best way. I actually had to take a week off of watching Buffy to recover because I was so destroyed. 12/10 I don't think I will ever be able to watch this episode of TV ever again

One of the greatest depictions of grief and bereavement of all time. Both formally inventive and unique in its cinematography, sound design, editing etc. while also being an incredible personally affecting emotional experience.

There’s another buffy episode that probably deserves the title more, but I did have to give this one some recognition. For a whacky silly show about vampires, this episode is maybe the realest portrayal of death and grief I’ve ever seen. It’s not just a sad episode that makes audiences cry - I mean it is that - but it’s also this incredible examination of what it’s like to lose someone, and how the world shifts on its axis when that happens. The lack of any non diegetic music is an amazing touch to give this episode a sense of distance from all others. It’s real in a way that’s hard to watch but also unforgettable. Certain scenes and lines will always stay with me and will forever shape my feelings on life and loss.

6.07 Once More, With Feeling

In this musical extravaganza, Sunnydale residents find themselves bursting into song, and flame, when a demon attempts to make Dawn his bride.

The greatest musical episode of all time! Pretty much all of the songs are unironically bangers, it's better choreographed and shot than frankly a lot of the bad movie musicals that have been inflicted on us in the past few years, and despite the goofy concept it still manages to tell an incredibly affecting story about the protagonist's struggle with depression. Pulls off an absolutely monumental tonal shift from comedic musical theatre homage to devastating emotional gut punch that manages to never feel tonally dissonant

Best musical episode ever (character development, lots of bops, and spontaneous combustion)

It is the best musical episode of any TV series. It is whimsical, but also far from filler and major plot beats happen while the characters sing jaunty little toons about them. Willow and Tara have sex. Spike gets and angsty alt rock song about his unrequited buffy crush. Buffy admits that when her friends resurrected her she was violently ripped out of heaven and doesn't wanna be on earth anymore. Spike and Buffy kiss. Its the best. / Invented musical episodes and is also one of the only good ones ever to have been made. Changed the game. Insane that it’s as good as it is.

hi, i have quit loa ever since i began reading your posts and the content you link on them. i am however struggling to know what i do next, yk? like i was so stuck in this belief for the past few years and i kind of shut down all the other religions and beliefs - thinking that everyone else was wrong somehow.

i know this is very selfish and problematic but it is a behavior that was endorsed constantly by loablr and loagram... so yeah. i also feel very hopeless somehow, as if everything else i can try wont have any effect :( - v (ill start signing my asks like this so u know its me)

Teaching that all other religions and beliefs are somehow wrong or ineffective is pretty common cult behavior, so it's not too surprising that you heard it here. The Law of Assumption community might not think of itself as a cult, but they regard Neville Goddard's teachings as infallible even though they're riddled with contradictions and unprovable assertions, so.

It might take some time to get this bug out of your brain, but in the meantime I can assure you that there are ways to make your life better and find happiness without buying into everything these people teach. Many, many people have done it.

(This whole claim that every happy, successful person is actually using the Law of Assumption is just shit they're pulling out of their asses, because they sure as hell didn't go ask all these people what they believe and practice.)

There are many things you can do. If you found that practices like affirmations and "assuming" that you were cool, smart, attractive, etc. genuinely made your life better, you can keep doing them. This video provides a good example of how to apply these sorts of techniques within a healthy framework. (I personally call this type of thing "headology," the name coming from the Discworld novels, where witches frequently use little psychological hacks to make seemingly magical results occur.)

You can also follow blogs created for trauma survivors, or blogs that post healthy forms of positivity, like this one, or this one, or this one. Also, Reasons For Hope is a good blog to follow. You can also read this article, Please Help Me: What to Do When You Need Help.

(Remember, contrary to what the LOA community teaches, you have more options than believing that you're responsible for literally everything that happens to you or wallowing in a "victim mentality." Jaden and Yusei, my beloved blorbit. The painfully monstrous and the painfully human. The narrative foils of all time. Jaden Yuki, the creatchur autism boi of all time. <3 I need to write about them more.

I know what you mean about the new shows. I'm still a ways off from watching them, but I still want to remember they exist but keep forgetting. What do you means vrains is six years old??? (<- was not even a yugioh fan when vrains was airing) You're telling me there's probably going to be new one after that??? That the days start coming and they don't stop coming?????

Shoutouts to the sevens and go rush fans. They are the mightiest of soldiers. I know nothing about their shows but I'm hesitantly penciling them into the groupchat au anyways because I have seen maybe three clips but I know this funny little alien guy is near and dear to my heart.

Obviously there's a bit of a shift between Vrains and the Sevens era, being made for new audiences, a little tone shifting (which we LOVE, because any franchise that stays the same forever is no bueno.) and that makes it easy to group the first six shows into one group. But I also think there's a fascinating dialogue between shows 1-3 and shows 4-6. I didn't realize it until I was a good way into Arc-V, but each of the second trilogy protagonists sorta reflects the first three.

With Yuma and Yugi, it's very purposeful, a stated "return to form" with the chipper kid and his ghost companion who lives in his special necklace. And when I was gushing over Yusei in 5Ds, I got a lot of people saying "Man, you're going to love Yusaku." They're both the rbf hacker protags who fight the government. Lots to love.

But Jaden and Yuya????? Did not imagine I would come out of Arc-V going "omg they're foils. They're the same story through a different lens. They need to TALK to eachother and bond over their shared experiences."

Even leaving out my pet theory of "Zarc Was An Incarnation Of Jaden In The Original Timeline", they're just so. *clenches fist* The childhood trauma of being a weird kids and masking with an overly bubbly personality only to learn the great anger they've been trying to hide is powerful enough to rip apart reality and they're secretly harbingers of destruction.

By the end of GX, I think Jaden has wonderfully come to term with that. By the end of Arc-V, I think Yuya hasn't.

Their dynamic in the gc AU is very much to me Yuya is still struggling with Z-arc stuff, but not saying anything about it because that'd be weird, so he just kinda frets about it until he hits a breaking point and Jaden gets to offer his advice on dealing with all this.

I am so interested in exploring this that it actually got me started writing fic again,,, which I haven't done in like a year, so wish me luck. I'll keep y'all updated :)

Angst aside, they're also just. One braincell between them. Theatre kid and guy who has never once acted natural in his entire life. Kid making a scene at a Waffle House while his friend slowly eats the entire menu and offers suggestions. Jaden is a pokemon fan and Yuya is a kingdom hearts girlie, I've decided this, and they takes turns infodumping to each other. Jaden summons duel spirits so Yuya can ride around on Hiphippo even when he's not dueling. They trade funny things they've heard their dragons say. They're eldritch and inhuman and best friends, your honor.

I mean, I had. But I didn’t usually care, you know? Or I got out of it, twisted it somehow, so that I was actually in the right. But in this case, there was absolutely nothing that I could do to twist this truth. Even if I found a way to, I couldn’t bring myself to lie to her anymore.

“I’m sorry,” I said, giving her the most pleading look I could make. 

“Don’t give me that bullshit,” Cloud fired back. “You always do this. ‘I’m sorry. What did I do? Oh, I didn’t know that would hurt you. Please forgive me. I didn’t know.’ Fucking bullshit.”

“I swear to you, it’s not.”

“Shut up. Of course it is. You always know what you’re doing. You’re too fucking smart for your own good, and I hate that you use that against me. Against everyone. The world isn’t against you, Sol, or maybe it wouldn’t be if you didn’t try to sabotage everything good that flies your way.”

“I swear to you, I had no idea that you didn’t know what you were signing up for when you joined the Exorcists.”

“Oh, sure. Sure you didn’t! Cut the crap for once in your fucking life and be honest with me. Don’t lie to me, Sol. You have no idea how insulting that is.” 

The way she said it was more painful than anything else I’d ever experienced, even dying.

I swallowed, stepping forward and reaching out my hand to her. It was kind of terrifying, like if I got too close, she would rip my entire hand off. “Cloud, please listen to me. If I have ever meant anything in my entire life — and afterlife — then it’s this. I’m so sorry. I didn’t know how much it would hurt you. I was being selfish.”

“You were,” Cloud snapped, but she softened slightly. She took my hand, and my heart swelled. She was so beautiful, the way she stood there. Even with that scowl on her face, I had never loved someone so much.

Usually when people were angry at me, I convinced myself — and them — that I was actually right. I was great at convincing people. Manipulation was my whole thing. I’d done it to so many people, probably even Nixie sometimes. It came naturally. 

But not with Cloud. For once, I wanted something real. And she was the realest thing I’d ever had.

“You were being so fucking selfish, you know that?” Cloud muttered, glaring at me. But she didn’t let go. Her fingers interlaced with mine, and I tried not to be distracted by the butterflies in my chest.

God, I was such a sap for her. It was kind of disgusting, honestly. I hated how I always folded for Cloud. I never usually did, not for anyone. That was my only rule for everyone (besides Nix). 

Apparently Cloud was another exception to that rule.

“How was I supposed to tell you that, though?” My voice cracked slightly. “Just… tell you that you had to go down and massacre people? It doesn’t mean much to me, doing that stuff — but I knew it would matter to you.”

“Then why didn’t you warn me sooner?” Cloud said softly.

“I didn’t want you to leave,” I said quietly. “Like I said before. I’m selfish. I’m a selfish person, Cloud, and by that I mean I will hold things back from you if it means that you’ll stay just a little while longer.”

“So would you have let me go into the Extermination just like that?”

“I don’t know,” I admitted. “I hope not. But I don’t have enough faith in myself to say no. So I can’t answer you. I wish I could.”

Cloud’s hand tightened around mine. “I thought we were going to be honest with one another, Sol.”

“I want to try,” I whispered. “God, I want to, but that’s not… normal. For me, at least. That isn’t how I am.”

“Listen,” Cloud said, suddenly serious. “You can tell me anything, I promise. And I won’t get mad. As long as you don’t lie. I will never be mad at you for telling the truth, no matter how shitty the truth is. Okay?”

“Okay,” I breathed. I took her other hand in mine, and she let me.

Fuck. I had fallen. Fallen harder than Lucifer, fallen deeper, fallen faster. I was like an angel whose wings had been ripped off and discarded. I was like an angel who had realised she didn’t even need wings at all, because simply falling was so much easier.

At the same time, I was terrified. I wanted my wings back to protect me from the landing that I knew would be all too painful. Too rough. I knew if I ever lost her, I would probably lose myself in the process. These past few months with her had made me feel things I’d never even experienced when I’d been alive. She’d done something to me, and I couldn’t be more grateful that she had.

No matter how much I trusted Cloud, I didn’t trust her enough to stay. I didn’t trust anyone enough for that. 

So I tried not to fall any further.

“I’m not exactly sure what I want to do,” Cloud confessed, with a small shrug of her shoulders. “I joined the Exorcists because I thought it was just Heaven’s army. Not that we actually needed one. I kind of thought it existed for no reason. I wanted to be close to you. I had no real idea what I was signing up for.”

If I was being completely honest with myself, maybe in my subconscious, I hadn’t mentioned it because I didn’t want to see her reaction. I’d assumed someone else would, or that she already knew.

Or maybe somewhere, deep inside, I kind of already knew she had no idea. And I wanted to keep that from her. That would have been a stupid fantasy. It never would have lasted. 

“I’m sorry,” I began. She cut me off.

“No, no, you aren’t.” This time she didn’t sound mad. She sounded exhausted. “You aren’t sorry for tricking me and you aren’t sorry for going on killing sprees every year. Otherwise you would have stopped doing both a lot earlier. What you’re doing is… honestly? It’s horrifying, Sol.” 

“I don’t think it is.” There was a sickening taste in my mouth as I said it. Kind of like vomit; I couldn’t hold it in. A little bitter, as if I didn’t completely believe what I was saying.

Cloud looked sceptical. “Really? You don’t think killing innocent people is justified?”

“They aren’t all that innocent.” I sighed. “We have to take measures sometimes, even if they can be… questionable. Look, Adam knows best. He’s been around longer than anyone. He knows what those sinners are like. Nothing’s ever going to change.”

“People change, though. They’re dead now, Sol. Let them be dead in peace.”

Then what will I have to do? Everything will be pointless then. It would be boring and hopeless and I wouldn’t be useful anymore.

We were silent for a little bit, but it wasn’t awkward. Despite the situations we found ourselves in sometimes, it was never awkward around Sol. It always felt comfortable, like I was where I was meant to be, even if neither of us were speaking.

My gaze slid over to her. She seemed to be thinking hard about something. If only I could mind read.

“I’m not cancelling the Exterminations or anything,” I warned her. “So don’t even think about that.”

“Oh, I know.” There was a glint in Cloud’s eyes. “And I didn’t expect you to. That’s just how you are, Sol. It doesn’t matter how much I like you — there’s always going to be a side to you that just can’t be helped. Too bad we’re on opposite sides now.”

“What?” I blinked in confusion, and she finally let go of my hands to pace back and forth. A grin was forming on her lips. 

“Didn’t you hear me? We’re enemies. Technically.” She laughed at my stunned expression. “I’m going to take you down, Sol. You and all of your shitty morals. I don’t care if you want these Exterminations, I don’t care if Adam wants them, or Sera, I don’t give a shit.” 

“So… you’re informing me that you’re going to rebel against my army?” I frowned.

She nodded. “Exactly. It’ll be an inside job, of course. I’ll rally some other Exorcists to be on my side. Watch me. I’m going to stop all of this.”

I raised an eyebrow. “You are, are you?”

“Yep.” 

I leaned in closer, my forehead almost touching hers. “You sound so confident. But hey. You’ve told me now. I can get you kicked out. I can shut down this thing before it even starts.”

“Oh, you could. But you won’t. I know you won’t.” Cloud wrapped an arm around my waist, pulling me close against her, and my face immediately flushed. She smirked. “Look at you. You’re hopeless against me. And you don’t want me leaving, do you? You’ll let me destroy everything you’re working for, and you’ll watch, so long as I stay.”

She was right. 

I avoided the question. Partially because I didn’t want to give in, and partially because the mention of her staying had captured my attention. “Wait. Does this mean you aren’t leaving?”

Please say yes. Please tell me it’s true.

Cloud brushed an eyelash away from my face, suddenly gentle, stroking one of her fingers down my cheek. Soft and light, as if she was a butterfly. So harmless. Did she even know how much she affected me? Well, clearly she did, from what she’d just said before, but did she really know? 

She was probably the only person who could break me, snap me like a twig, and I would let her.

“Yes,” she murmured. “I’ll stay.” 

Maybe I actually was crazy, because I could have sworn that I saw love in her eyes as she said it. Why? Because it looked like a mirror, an exact reflection of the way I looked at Cloud. Like she was as obsessed with me as I was with her. But then, I had never been very good with emotions. Never with my own, let alone with reading other people’s.

But she’d said she would stay, and that was more than I’d ever expected. It was like a dream, one I never wanted to wake up from. It was too late now to turn back. I was chained to her. Whatever happened, no matter how complicated things were going to get, I knew I wasn’t going to be able to stop myself from following her wherever she went.

And so, I let myself fall.

Because you don't have forever to wait like he does.

So you yell, you cry, you ball your fists to stop yourself from hitting or shoving him. And he freezes up. He doesn't know what to do, what to say, how to make it better and stop your from hurting because of him. He's flustered, confused, and then you turn your back on him. He's absolutely lost, his unbeating heart pulling him in every direction. But he knows he can't lose you. Not like this. He cares for you too much. He really likes you. He... actually loves you. So he follows you. Because he doesn't want you to leave him. He's still silent as he thinks about how to never make you feel this raw again. But the way he stops you and just holds you tells you everything you need to know. He wants this. He just needs your help in figuring out how to do it right 🥺💔.

But if it doesn't work out right away he bails on the idea, and then he just never fucking tells anyone because he doesn't want it to be another thing added to the list of what he's not good enough for. (pardon me choosing violence with this I'm just in that mode apparently lmao)

30.) Funniest scene they had?: Oh man. Angel has had so many golden moments??? But what we were just talking about the other day, all that shit with the Swole Boys, is always going to be some top-tier shit. Like it just doesn't get better than that lmao

23.) Future headcanon: They way I know that the money from the end of the season is going to push the restaurant into a new era. And it's going to be great. And things are going to be going well. But I think that Carmy is going to get so wrapped up in all of that, that all of his trauma and all of that is going to get put on the backburner all over again. Because he's going to think that he's going to be fine because other things are fine. And that's not going to be the case. Like obviously there is still going to be chaos in the restaurant because it's a fucking restaurant but I really can't wait to get deeper into all the shit with Carmy and his brother. I can't wait to watch him rip those old scars open RAHHHHHH I'm losing my mind.

26.) When do you think they were being themselves the most?: I feel like his dynamic with Richie is really and truly what brings out some of the realest Carmy. Like not necessarily when they're screaming at each other (but that too) but also just. The jokes and the banter and the snark and the laughs. Like fuck, man, those two knew each other before all of the grief and they still have each other now and I think that's about as real as it gets.

5.) My favorite ship of them?: I've been thinking a lot about what kind of OC I would put with him. (Because I have...ideas. Like the way I'm lowkey waiting for Whumptober to be over so I can invest more of my brainspace into my Thoughts about him and this mystery OC in my head). But he can't be with someone that's a pushover. Which I feel like putting him with someone soft and all that is a nice thought but he's got some bite and I think he needs to be with someone who can match that. Someone funny, and witty, and definitely someone with their own damage. He can't be with someone who is going into the relationship with the intent to "fix him" because that's gonna drive them to an early grave. He needs someone who is kind and loving but will also call him out on his bullshit because he gets so far into his own head and up his own ass sometimes that he gets lost. He needs someone who is going to pull him out of that. The way I'm rotating through careers in my head trying to see which one fits for a potential partner for him. Someone in the restaurant business, maybe, because they'd have that in common. But I also think that if his partner was someone in a completely different field, he could learn a lot from them and I think that he would appreciate that a lot too. Fuck me I've rambled for so long I'm so sorry 😂😂
