coming to the lord of the rings books after having already seen the movies it was quite strange to finish reading fellowship of the ring and have it end with boromir still alive. i was like “huh that’s weird i KNOW that death isn’t something the movies invented.” and then i started the two towers and he died on page 2.

I think I've figured out the #1 rule of story telling...
Most of the credit has to go to Cardinal West on YouTube, specifically his video essay on Puss In Boots: The Last Wish (TLW). I've literally paused the video to write this.
Towards the end of the video, he begins talking about how TLW follows almost textbook story structure, but the predictability takes nothing away from the experience. He used LOTR as an example, specifically when he introduced his parents to the movies.
His father, after watching part 1 of Fellowship, said he felt like the ring is going to end up in the volcano. Well... yeah. It does. And most of us, even if we went in totally blind like Cardinal's dad, probably figured that out pretty early.
But knowing that didn't ruin it for us. Yeah, we know the ring will be destroyed, but we kept watching because we couldn't stop from wondering what else would be destroyed.
So if you are going to follow any one rule when writing stories, I think it should be this; your audience can know where, but they can't know how.
Tell them the destination, but don't tell them what will be lost to get there.

Denethor being introduced as looking and feeling more like Aragorn than his own son Boromir is such a stark reframing of Aragorn and Boromir’s power dynamic for me, more brutal still that it comes so late. It’s the third book and suddenly I’m wondering, did Boromir see his father in Aragorn? Was it his burden that only he could see it? Is this why Boromir distrusted Aragorn? Is this why Boromir died putting all his trust into Aragorn? But Boromir’s been dead for so long now, all we have is Faramir’s word to go by, and he seems to think that Boromir’s failure was never really seeing their father for who he was. so I get nowhere, I just have these graves and this king.

I'm still really attached to my headcanon that Ivriniel of Dol Amroth has an acerbic, scholarly personality but is intensely loyal to her family, both by blood and marriage. I imagine she went with her sister Finduilas to Minas Tirith, was largely entertained by the Denethor/Finduilas courtship, but also entranced by the Houses of Healing and the depths of the archives.
As a result of all these things, she ended up firmly entrenched as Finduilas's companion, confidante, and general advocate of her interests. She never tried to replace Finduilas after she died, but she wasn't about to leave her grieving sister-sons, and Minas Tirith had become her home. With Denethor's and Adrahil's leave, she stayed in the City for years as a respected member of the Steward's family, until (to her great indignation) Denethor evacuated her ahead of the Battle of the Pelennor.
She's even more hardened after his death—they had otherwise gotten on very well—but remains a fiercely affectionate aunt towards her nephews and nieces, and despite the occasional personality clash with Imrahil, loves him dearly. After losing Finduilas, Adrahil and her mother, Boromir, and Denethor, she's all the more determined to do as much as can still be done for what remains of her family.

i can’t remember if i headcanon faramir to be 6′6″ or 6′8″, not that it really matters. what does matter is that he’s taller than boromir
