anyway. yep! my headcanon is that the mushroom series of heartless were essentially like early versions of ansem. experiments to see if creating a heartless with a will of its own were even possible. (the mushrooms just wanna play charades and go on nice walks! they wont steal your heart because their instincts tell em’ to! they’ll only snatch it if they feel like it <3) how can you make an “immortal” successor if they cant even understand the research you left for them? so thats why they were created!

dark will always take up immediate issue with those who mock love or emotion as weak i think. irrational at times? sure, he can agree. sensitive, vulnerable? absolutely; inherently, (as a synonym for sincere,) but the moment someone starts legitimately calling love a weakness or an exposed vein only meant to be punctured and drained from, that's when he starts to get angry. dark, as someone who already bears an inherent callousness and apathy, who knows just how easy it is to be cruel, destructive and belligerent, always admires daisuke for the boy's heart and tender, stubborn emotion. like sugisaki's interview mentions, dark is likely someone who bears continuous witness to and understands just how much intense effort can go into someone doing their best in trying to be kind to others; he thinks that he himself never could, at least not even close to the same way that daisuke steadily tries to maintain. those that would mock or scoff at daisuke's, if not the overall idea of kindness, dark won't hesitate to snap at and call weak, pathetic, or cowardly in return. those who prey on others' feelings and scorn or abuse them aren't proving that kindness is a 'weakness;' they're only fouling good things that could have even otherwise been their own with their own 'malicious crap and garbage.'

Something about this place set Sora off.

He was down in a crouch, hands out in preparation as he looked around the landscape. He didn't smell anything dangerous, and he wasn't hearing any movement, but something in his instincts had been triggered, and he was on the verge of shifting just in case.

He didn't realize it was his "heart" reacting, his new sense of "darkness" activating at the strange rules of this universe.

Pools of shadow formed around him, and Sora whirled around to see himself surrounded. Dark entities emerged from the depths, with glowing yellow eyes and sporting a strange emblem. What the-

Sora shifted, summoning his demonic traits and growling in warning. These things weren't demons, he could tell that much, but whatever they were he had a feeling they weren't friendly.

So does Sora have a nobody of his own?

And usually a powerful heartless is made from a powerful heart. So was Sora only made into a shadow because his heart wasn’t powerful?

The Ariel / Riku Parallel and the future of Sora and Riku

This is a parallel I see covered a lot of the time but when it's mentioned the comparison usually involves Naminé in place of Ursula.

The parallel typically follows:

Ariel is Riku. They both wanted to see the outside world.

Sora is Prince Eric.

Naminé is/was Ursula (Vanessa).

Naminé (Ursula) used witch like powers to place Sora (Eric) in a trance and blind him from his true light/the one, Riku (Ariel).

It's a direct parallel that needs little analysis or explanation.

I have also seen fellow Sorikus touch on this parallel with the Final World tunnel scene where Sora notices that the Light is Riku much like Eric notices "the one" who sang to him and saved him in the storm is Ariel.

My theory is that this parallel goes beyond just the tunnel scene. In fact, I believe that Nomura is following the KH2 Atlantica storyline for Sora and Riku's eventual romance later in the games. Walk with me here.

The KH2 Atlantica story begins with Ariel saving Eric after a storm. She immediately falls in love, and sings to him. He wakes up just enough to hear her singing, she goes back to Atlantica and her father breaks her statue of him, her heart breaks and Ursula makes her contract with her...you know the tale.

In the KH2 version of this tale however, Ariel falls into a deep depression because she knows she can't be with a human up on land as a mermaid. Not to mention her father's hatred of humans casted fear and doubt into her. When Ariel and Eric defeat Ursula, Ariel reveals to Eric that she is actually a mermaid. However in this scene, Ariel hangs her head in shame and tells him "goodbye" anticipating that he would not accept her as she was. To her surprise, he does accept her.

This scene always struck me because at no point in the original film is Ariel ever ashamed of being a mermaid, she simply knew as a mermaid she couldn't live on land with the one she loved. Why would shame and fear of not being accepted for who you are be added to this tale?

And it doesn't stop there. All throughout the Atlantica storyline, we're told that Ariel and Eric's love is a "forbidden love". A love that shouldn't happen between mermaid and human, sea and land. We're told how a "love struck" mermaid in the sea felt she could only love her human soulmate from afar, that they could never be together despite her wanting them to be.

Who, in the entire Kingdom Hearts cast, does this sound like? Who else, if confirmed that he truly is in love with Sora, would have a forbidden love?

There is no one else other than Riku. Kai*ri, as a cishet female, would not have a forbidden love with Sora. Riku, as a demi/gay male, would have the forbidden love.

Riku has spent a good portion of this series loving and protecting Sora from afar, most often than not, without Sora even being aware.

Who would be more likely to be "ashamed" for loving Sora, and fearful of rejection? Kai*ri, or Riku? In fact, just as Ariel was ashamed that she was originally a mermaid and had to transform into a human, Riku was ashamed that he had to borrow the powers of Ansem and transformed into Ansem.

Now why do I say this parallel is going to dictate the future of Sora and Riku's relationship? Because KH3 pretty much follows half of this parallel already.

We already know that Sora discovered that Riku was his true light in the tunnel. He then forgets all of this ever happened and forgets that he ever saved Riku.

And not only that, but Riku's light is blocked out and Sora ends up thinking that the light belongs to another character.

That's right. Sora (Prince Eric) has yet another haze over his eyes. And instead of Naminé, this time Kairi is Ursula.

This is an exact parallel of not only Atlantica, but of what happened in Chain of Memories with Naminé.

Naminé describes herself as a witch who controls the memories of Sora and everyone surrounding him.

Naminé is Ka*iri's Nobody, also described as her "alter ego". Vanessa is in a way Ursula's human alter ego, they're one in the same.

Ka*iri, most likely, has a similar power. She may not use it consciously, but whenever Sora turns his focus on Ka*iri, he forgets all about Riku. This has happened since KH1.

Ursula used her power to make Eric forget about Ariel, the girl who saved him and sang to him. Let's also not forget that Ursula made an appearance in Dream Drop Distance when Sora and Riku were building their dream raft.

We're following the Ariel parallel, just a bit out of order. We're past the point of Ariel's (Riku's) depression. We're past the point of Ariel makes a contract with Ursula to transform into a human / Riku making a contract with Ansem to transform into Ansem. We're at the point where Prince Eric is tricked by Ursula / Sora realized who his light is but forgot and is currently under the false impression that Kai*ri is his true light.

Memory of Melody aside, KH3 is the most recent major title in the series. KH2 happened way back in 2005 and Nomura is STILL referencing it. This tells me this parallel is not concluded nor going away, rather, it's building up. Which means, we will eventually reach the conclusion of this parallel.

Prince Eric finding the one. Sora finding his light.

Every Disney parallel thus far has either reached a conclusion, or is still ongoing (such as the Riku / Hercules and self sacrifice for love). I highly doubt this parallel will be dropped before its conclusion, unless Disney or some Square execs drop the hammer on it and either force Prince Sora to be with Kai*ri instead of Riku or force Sora into some "power of friendship" spiel. Or if Nomura's hands get sweaty and he remembers the pressures of homophobia in society and ends up fearing the anger of the fanbase for pushing an LGBTQ romance. So although I genuinely believe it's Nomura's intention to pair Sora and Riku given the buildup of their relationship over the longevity of this series, and the Disney couple parallels between the two, he may end up cracking and decide against pursuing it.

Given that Riku in the Novels all but confirmed Sora is his light and love and Nomura approved it, I'm hoping that he has the confidence in his tale to propel this love into the mainline titles. Nomura DID say that the series has taken a directional shift, this may be the shift he's referring to all along.

So what would a Soriku love look like in future titles? Well let's look at the portion of the Atlantica parallel not explored yet.

Ariel returned Prince Eric's pendant. The Crown Necklace theory and Shooting Star Memory has yet to be addressed. Perhaps at some point in Quadratum Sora loses his crown necklace, Riku finds it and returns it to him triggering the both of them to finally address the Crown Necklace with Sora remembering that Riku is the one who gave it to him in the first place. Sora remembering that Riku was the light in the darkness and not Kai*ri is now a new plot point needing to be addressed. Just as Eric realized Ariel was the one he was looking for all along, he declared his love for her. Sora will eventually realize Riku was the one he's been searching for all his life and will probably apologize for not realizing it sooner.

Not to mention the Hercules parallel of self sacrifice for true love has also yet to be addressed on Sora's end. He's still figuring out what love is and what love means. Both the Ariel-Eric and Hercules-Meg parallels end with a confession of love. That confession may just be how Kingdom Hearts ends.

Additional Note: Do I think there will be a Soriku kiss? Maybe, but it most likely won't happen in-game.

I instead believe that Soriku will be confirmed with a koibito tsunagi - an interlocking hand hold that roughly translates to "lover's connection". Nomura and other Square Enix devs have used this before, especially in FF7 Remake when Aerith takes Cloud's hand and interlocks his fingers with hers (on their date towards the end of the game), further confirming her feelings for him. It's a subtle way of showing a character's affection and I think it will be fitting for both Sora and Riku.

He has so many similar things to Luffy, even when he's angry. It's just so goofy. I really hope he'll be like anti-hero or something like that to this arc. I have the theory that Loki is innocent and didn't kill his father. It's like when King Riku killed his own people but the truth is actually Doflamingo control over him. But anyway, next chapter we'll see more!

Various random concept arts of: Boss Monster Roxas (akin to Xion's form in KH Days) Inspired by the Headless Horseman fable. (Sora as the king, and Roxas, the horse that carries him... also inspired by a concept in the BLEACH anime. Not to mention, Samurai captains were typically horse-back riders so this wicked headless horseman centaur boss monster RoXAS- liSTEN I LOVE THIS CONCEPT OKAY) 

Roxas's keyblade armor (though may make a separate post for a more detailed original version) 

Roxas's non-keyblade Nobody weapon: Swords. 

Xion's non-keyblade Nobody weapon: Scissors (puppet on strings? seems like a good weapon. Based off her weapon's design in her boss monster form.) 

Namine's non-keyblade Nobody weapon: Kogai Sword Needle (small, but deadly when used at close range in a panic) 

And Roxas and Vanitas, listen man I am currently writing a 66K word fanfiction featuring these two; at least two or three years in the making. I have so many thoughts and feelings about them, and the fandom is sleeping on the potential of these two, I swear. So just for fun, I saw Riku and Sora combine a keyblade, and I figured I'd try the same for Roxas and Vanitas. One light keyblade surrounded by two- creates the Keyblade "Heaven's Gate" that rains sharp daggers of light and darkness down upon enemies. It also has a second ability, to summon and control a Nobody-Unversed named Cerberus Spine, inspired by Hell's Cerberus. Not sure why I went with a heaven-hell religious theme here but... idk it seems cool. Light and Dark, Heaven and Hell I guess. I'm sleep deprived but the keyblades were cool to makeeeee

I just had a random plot bunny attack me at work. What if Desmond Miles was reborn as Sora from Kingdom Hearts with no memories of his former life? He goes through Kingdom Hearts (the first game) as normal but once we hit Chain of Memories things start to change. The plot of CoM is Memories and what is and isn't real. As Marluxia (or was it Axel) put it, "To lose is to find, and to find is to lose." Rather than Namine, Sora begins to remember his life as Desmond Miles. Kinda scaring Donald and Goofy. However it kinda goes away for a bit when Namine restores Sora's memories, for Kingdom Hearts 2 and Dream Drop. Yet Kingdom Hearts 3 is where it can get interesting again. Change out one of the 13 vessels for either Clay or Lucy and have Sora start to have an existential crisis and by the time of the Remind DLC when Sora uses the power of waking to save his friends, it's such a Desmond move that both parts of him are at peace.

Then he wakes up back on earth near the Grand Temple 11 years later, as the sixteen or seventeen year old Sora, or is it Desmond?

I’m gonna be honest with you, my highschool crush was Roxas so I wanna keep him in this idea but, my god, it would be so fun if Sora’s ‘nobody’ turns out to be one of his Bleeds.

But… we can actually keep Roxas since his looks is based on Ventus who was resting in Sora’s heart but we hint at his connection with Desmond Miles by making the prologue of KH2 dwell on his family and it’s talked about how he has an older brother, younger sister and younger brother. Namine later admitted that she wasn’t the one who wrote that in. It was Roxas himself who added that ‘detail’. ‘DiZ’ suggested that it was Roxas’ subconscious taking a bit of ‘memory’ from Sora but that doesn’t make sense when Riku tells him that Sora was an only child.

The real reason why they needed Roxas to merge with Sora is because Sora’s memories and Desmond Miles’ memories are not stable. His experience in Castle Oblivion and Namine’s powers only served to widen the gap between the two sets of memories.

Roxas, being both Sora and Desmond as his nobody, is meant to cover the gaps to stabilize him.

When the time came when Roxas and Sora became one, Desmond Miles’ memories go to sleep to stabilize Sora.

It wasn’t what DiZ wanted. He believed Desmond Miles’ memories was necessary for Sora to grow and defeat Organization 13 but they have no idea why Desmond Miles’ memories refused to resurface.

Until…

KH3 happens and everyone remembers Xion.

Because sure, one of the 13 vessels turn out to be Lucy or Clay (or maybe even Cross) but the most they were able to do was tell Sora that he wasn’t the chosen one. Desmond Miles was the chosen one. He just so happened to be a vessel to the real chosen one and Xehanort’s goal had been to awaken Desmond Miles to control Kingdom Hearts because Kingdom Hearts was an ‘artifact’ from another dimension that appeared in their dimension.

And Desmond Miles was an otherwordly soul, the only being that can control Kingdom Hearts.

And the reason why Sora can’t fully remember his life as Desmond Miles?

Because he wasn’t the true vessel.

See…

Desmond’s true vessel wasn’t actually Sora.

It was Ventus.

Sora was a ‘replacement’ because of what happened to Ventus.

And that was why Xion doesn’t have any of Desmond Miles’ memories nor did she ever take his face. She was an imperfect replica so she wasn’t capable of even trying to hold Desmond’s memories in the first place.

Cue Sora having an existential crisis of who he truly was because he was honestly getting on board with the whole idea of being Desmond Miles as well.

HEY we don't actually see any scarring in the kh series but with how intensely sora and riku fight each other with keyBLADES in kh1 like.... there should be SOME sort of scars given to each other

sora and riku sleeping together and riku getting up in the middle of the night from phantom pain from his scars and going to sit in the bathroom shaking in pain and trying to soothe the aches that just won't go away until sora (who's a very clingy sleeper and often wakes up whenever riku gets out of bed) comes in all bleary eyed to check on him

you okay, 'ku? he asks while rubbing at his eyes and trying to shake the sleep to give his boyfriend all his attention

phantom aches, is all riku will answer with as he nurses a cup of warm water from the sink

sora grabs the very nice expensive lotion and gently guides riku back to bed to massage him and try to ease the pain

as he's massaging his boyfriend sora traces over raised ridges of scar tissue over his torso

riku rarely if ever talks about his wounds but tonight he's feeling open to sharing and as sora traces a scar that nearly bisects his chest

that was from when you had to stop ansem while he was controlling me

sora flinches, fingers stilling

how many scars are from me? he asks in a small voice as he pulls away

riku looks away and his silence speaks volumes
