Double width weave blanket is off the loom! Unfortunately, I made a mistake in the warping phase and didn't realize it until I was halfway done weaving. In the middle, there are two repeats of the green square right next to each other. I know how to fix that if I tried this project again, and I do want to give it another go at some point. Overall, not bad for my first time trying this kind of thing!

I'm planning on making something like this
A simple stand that could be easily modified to be used as either a full on weighted loom for loger pieces with multiple heddle sticks for repeating patterns or i could use the anchored heddle stick as the bottom line for smaller hand woven pieces. It should also be posible to use it for anythin from knitting yarn to lace quality threads as it has no pins or ridges or any other dividers limiting the width of the piece or the thread count.
Kind of primitive but i like the idea of the simple home-made design. I also happen to have an empty wall between 2 doors in my hobby room where it would fit just perfectly
I have a mighty urge to make myself a standing frame loom and absolutely no idea what to do with the eventually producted fabric. For past few days, my brain has been wired with "society is a construct, weave NOW" and absolutely no answer to the question "but why?"

Rigid Heddle Loom (part 3).
Last post the frame was built and the heddle held. It now only (and by only I mean “oh god there’s still lots to do !”) required a way to turn and tension the thread on the take up bars. This requires 6 things, 4 knobs to go on the end of the bars for the user to turn and a ratchet on each bar to stop them rotating under tension.
Ratchet first. The plan here was to design this and then get them 3D printed, partly because that’s a very accurate way to build things but mostly because that’s what all the cool kids are doing these days.
Design was (ahem) simple:
Again in FreeCAD.
This CAD file was then sent to 3DPrintUK to be printed using their Selective Laser Sintering printers (non of this extruded plastic toy printer nonsense for me !).
In the meantime the knobs were made. These were turned on the lathe from a single block of wood:
then cut up and run over a bull nose router bit to give them some ridges:
Drill some holes in them for the bars, put an indent in one end of each bar for the ratchet, knock up some pawls and Robert is your fathers brother:
Yea, I know many actual bits of work skipped, but I’m trying to make this interesting, ok ?
And finally we have a finished loom:
The take up bars have a 2nd smaller diameter dowel tied to them to make it easier to tie the warp threads to and the whole thing got a coat of varnish for protection.
Now all I’ve got to do is sit back and watch “the other half” knock out a few scarves or whatever !

Shoe laces!! I didn't feel like breaking out one of my ridged heddle looms to do a weighted warp so this will have turns every 4 repeats. #tabletweaving #cardweaving

Trying More New Things
In my last blog, I mentioned that I had purchased a ridged heddle floor loom. Since then I have woven numerous dishtowels, place mats, scarves and guest hand towels. I have discovered that it is one of the things that I really enjoy doing. It takes the better part of an afternoon to warp the loom, but the rest can be done in spare moments, which makes it convenient for me. I have given all but one dish towel away as gifts, but would like be be able to sell some in the future. I keep the loom warped and ready to go.
These dishtowels were my first project. They can be put in the washer and dryer and are so absorbent.
I also was able to take a couple of classes from the city of Roswell--
Blacksmithing, where I made these two hooks--
and pottery using a potter’s wheel to make these two bowls. I enjoyed the classes but neither is something I would like to do long term.
Now, broom making is something that I have learned to do that I would love to do more of. I have TAUGHT a couple of classes and hope to teach more. But, I love just making brooms for my own enjoyment.
My first two brooms. On the left is a hearth broom and on the right is a cobweb broom.
I took my broom making class at Foxfire in the Georgia mountains. They have classes in a lot of different old crafts.
My classroom at Foxfire.
We went up the day before my class and stayed at the Dillard House. We usually go there at least once a year. I always do the River Ride while there. So relaxing and beautiful. One of my very most favorite things is being on a horse!!
Since being on a horse is one of my favorite things, I take every opportunity to ride. I have some friends in the mountains near Dahlonega that have horses and will take me trail riding. Since I have ridden with them a lot, we decided to try a ride to the Etowah River from their house, have a picnic lunch, let the horses play in the water and then ride back. 4 1/2 hours in all. Most of that was riding :)
My horse -Little Man- decided he wanted to do some splashing. Since we didn’t want to get wet for the ride home, he got a slap on the rear to make him stop :)
Winter is on it’s way but we are looking forward to the holidays and then Spring. There is never a time not to try something new and fun!!

What’s a backstrap loom @systlin, and is it at all similar to the scrap wood ridged loom I’m desperately trying to convince myself Not To Build Just Yet?
*has no power tools*
*has no scrap wood*
*has barely enough impulse control to keep from amending these issues*
I can send you the instructions for it I’m so hype
Edit: I HAVE DISCOVERED YOU CAN MAKE A HEDDLE FROM POPSICLE STICKS AND OH FUCK YEAH I AM DOWN BC I CAN MAKE PLAID MUCH EASIER NOW
Edit #2: This heddle will be for the frame loom I’ve *Already Started Building* and I’m soooo excited
Well fuck guess I’mma have to build a backstrap loom huh
@dancing-thru-clouds is a horrible influence

Why not use a grand piano bench for a 32 inch ridge heddle loom, when you refuse to buy the stand? More money for fiber and dyes! Not the best, but something to do while still under the weather. #thekraftykrafter #thekraftyweaver #weaversofig #weaversofinstagram #makersgonnamake #makeallday #createdtocreate #artandsoul

My sister is visiting so I warped up my little cricket loom for the first time in a while because my big loom can't leave the office. I had to jury rig it to weave with two heddles but I think it's working pretty all right, all things considered.

Warping up my loom for the first time in a bit. Excited to weave with the finest thread yet. Going to be a shawl in the Johnstone clan tartan.

My first attempt at using two heddles for finer cloth. Did I do this just to torture myself? Probably. I think it's turning out all right, but I am not sure. Guess we'll see when I start weaving. Also, for some reason, I chose a linen blend, so that will be fun.

After fixing SO many threading errors, I have finally started weaving. The fabric has more of an open sett than I would like, so when I do this again, I will use two 12 dent heddles instead of the 10 dent heddles I am currently using.

Took forever getting this set up properly, but I finally have it down. Weaving a blanket that is going to be double the width once I take it off the loom. I am basically weaving while it is folded in half. You can see the fold side and the open side in the pictures. Magic!

After wet finishing, the threads of my towel fluffed up quite a bit, but not enough to make the weave close enough for my liking. So I am warping up a new towel that I will weave using two 15 dent reeds since my second 12.5 dent reed isn't here yet. This time I went with the dark purple as my main color.
