Potato Farming in Kenya: Exploring Furrow and Ridge Planting Techniques
Potato farming holds a significant position in Kenya’s agricultural landscape, contributing to both food security and economic growth. With its adaptability to various agro-ecological zones and high nutritional value, potatoes have become a staple crop for many Kenyan households. The favorable climate and soil conditions in regions like the Rift Valley, Central, and Western Kenya make them ideal…

ok this sounds insane but in 2018 i went to a few carnivorous plant talks at the botany conference in minnesota. i got caught up in conversation with one of the guys there who was a huge nepenthes guy who told me a story about another collector in the pacific northwest who'd been buying poached plants, like a huge amount, and eventually got staked out by the fish and wildlife service and arrested and had all his plants seized and went to prison for it. idk if i ever talked about this on this blog before-- i know i liveblogged a lot from that conference but cant remember what all i posted-- but ive avoided talking about it since then because i was never able to find like, news articles or anything covering it, but behold.... we now have proof it was real, and im like 80% sure this was this guy he was talking about. the raid happened in 2016 and they'd been staking them out since 2013. he had nearly 400 plants and had been sourcing many of them from poachers in indonesia and borneo.
remember folks: poaching happens with plants too! it's a huge problem not only in carnvirous plants (nepenthes especially, which this piece is dedicated to talking about) but also in native plant populations in the US, including native carnivorous plant populations (north and south carolina's venus fly traps, california's darlingtonia, and sarracenia from the east coast), native orchids (historically one of the most poached categories), desert plants/cacti/succulents, and slow-growing woody ornamentals (cycads, for example). never buy bare-root plants off ebay or facebook! your best bet is local nurseries (which usually purchase farm-raised plants that do well in a wide range of conditions, and as a result have a healthy population in the wild) or specialty greenhouses (more expensive, but at least in the case of carnivorous plants offer young plants bred from established adult plants in-house, raised in captivity).

Kairi
Howl - He’s naive about certain things and has a very limited education, but he’s inwardly very soft and would absolutely LOVE Kairi’s hair. He’s also big on touching / holding hands. If she’s keen on giving affection, HOWL WILL TAKE THE ENTIRE STOCK. He’s barely known affection and softness on his life despite having softness within him.
Ridge - He’s more grey and would find Kairi absolutely adorable, but due to being immortal, he’s more of an ONS kinda guy ‘cause he doesn’t want to outLIVE his lover.
Nix - Kairi is very pretty and Nix, gosh, he’d very blushy and wanting to impress her, but knowing that it’s likely that she might not want to put up with his natural temperature.
Wes - The shade of her hair reminds Wes of banana taffy and he LOVES banana taffy. He’s taller than her so that’s adorable to him, but he’s never really interacted with girls or guys as far as romantic type stuff, so he’d have to talk it slow. He looks grumpy and can be, but inwardly, he’s a big softie!! Expect a fair amount of blushing.
Yuè
James - He’d find Yuè rather handsome with his beard and general hairiness after being around so many other androgynous elves, and wouldn’t be bothered by the extra eye that he has. His last ears emote with his emotions and not everyone is charmed by that. He’d always want to try easing Yuè’s pain too—if he left him.
Hymn - Though Hymn is beautiful and James has had enough of that, Hymn also seems pretty scarred, and honestly, James would be curious about his life, how he got such scars. Though, Hymn’s muscular form is also not the norm for James, so there’s another interesting point—Hymn has to be very strong, from James’ eyes at least!!
Howl - Howl would find Yuè to be a good person because he takes care of people—well, he helps children—and that’s good. He’d wonder if Yuè would have been able to help someone like him, and also, he’d think that Yuè has kind eyes. He, who tosses aside who he used to be to be a better person, Howl would be very impressed by that !! Though he’d be curious about his additional eye though!
aaa these are all really cute! I think Kairi and Howl would be so cute/funny to put in a room together; two odd peas in a pod who need a little extra tenderness and care after hard lives.
James and Hymn in a room would also be so funny--James seems pretty curious and shy, and Hymn hasn't had a whole lot of experience with the world outside of his childhood and decade of cruel servitude. I think they'd both have a really good time learning about each other and their respective lives/cultures :D
