'Forty years on from the year in which it is set, and released on the date of Winston Smith’s first diary entry, George Orwell’s seminal dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (not 1984, despite how this most recent retelling has chosen to style the title) has received perhaps its highest-profile adaptation since Michael Radford’s film. Andrew Garfield plays the reluctantly rebellious Winston, and man-of-the-moment Andrew Scott is a smoothly vicious O’Brien. Cynthia Erivo makes for a suitably feisty Julia, and Tom Hardy reprises his Bane boom as Big Brother, although his contributions are wisely kept to a minimum. The talented supporting cast includes What We Do In The Shadows’s Natasia Demetriou and Black Mirror’s Alex Lawther, and the score is co-composed by Muse’s Matt Bellamy. Lavish cinema and television ads have brought the show to worldwide attention, and yet it’s likely to receive a fraction of the interest that, say, Ripley will obtain. Why? Because it’s an audio drama.
Granted, Audible’s new production of Nineteen Eighty-Four, which is billed as a disturbing, adult-focused and immersive experience, is a million miles away from a distinguished actor reading an audiobook version of Orwell’s novel. At times, it goes further than you might expect in terms of the sex and violence quotient; there is a love scene between Garfield and Erivo that, somehow, manages to be wildly explicit without showing anything visual (one can only imagine what it was like for the actors to record that particular scene), and there are nasty scenes of torture and violence that are none less chilling for being conveyed through a mixture of dialogue and sound effects. (Yes, Room 101 gets its full measure.) Muse fans, meanwhile, will be thrilled by Bellamy’s score, co-composed by Ilan Eshkeri and performed by a sixty-piece orchestra, that blends somber strings and piano with percussive electronic beats.
Director Destiny Ekaragha and screenwriter Joe White should be commended for a faithful and smoothly gripping adaptation that adds in a few successful set-pieces, such as Winston having an attack of paranoia on the train that his minor acts of rebellion are about to result in his immediate arrest. If it’s listened to on headphones in a public place, as it no doubt is supposed to be, Nineteen Eighty-Four becomes a deliciously chilling immersion in literary paranoia; you’re standing around your fellow citizens wondering which of them you’re going to fall in love with, which of them will betray you — and whether that will be the same person.
Clearly, Audible intends this to be a marker in a series of blockbuster literary adaptations that will change the face (or, rather, ear) of the genre. There was a Sam Mendes-overseen David Copperfield last year, with Helena Bonham Carter as Betsey Trotwood and Doctor Who’s Ncuti Gatwa as Copperfield, but it barely shifted the dial in terms of audience awareness. Ninety Eighty-Four feels different, and not just because of its A-list participants, rock star composer and dread-laden subject matter.
In a year where the word “Orwellian” is likely to be used more than usual in the course of the British and American elections alike, and where any tech blogger will write lazy articles talking about the way in which Big Brother, Newspeak and the rest have become part of our daily social media culture, it’s good to be reminded of the power of the original, translated into this new form.
Yet I remain unconvinced that this will be the crossover blockbuster success that Audible so clearly believe it will. Enjoy it for what it is — a few hours of sumptuously conceived and acted Orwelliana — and let’s leave the question of whether this will eventually come to replace visual entertainment out of the equation. Until, that is, Christopher Nolan is recruited to write and direct an immersive audio adaptation. Then we’re talking.'

What are you top 10 must reads for understanding the divine feminine/Goddesses? Much love~
Hi there!
I love this question! And such a difficult one to answer simply because there are so many great books. I am going to answer your question in two ways: first, by providing a general reading list, and second, by providing a select reading list by goddess.
There are inevitably some setbacks to my recommendations--specifically because I have a limited background in many areas—but I intend to update this list in the future. To that point—thank you 🌺 to the person who asked me this question! You have inspired me to put together a “living” Goddess Recommended Reading list on my website. I will continue to update there in the future.
Worth mentioning: Many of the books I recommend are to some degree scholastic. But, all of which are readable and enjoyable to anyone inside or outside of academia.
Finally, right now I'm building my Journey to the Goddess YouTube channel where you can find my in-depth Interviews with scholars and artists about the Sacred Feminine. If you journey over to YouTube and enjoy what you see, please hit the “subscribe” button on my channel. Like the videos? Hit “like” as it will help my content show up for other like-minded souls.
General Goddess book recommendations:
1)    “Goddess: Mysteries of the Feminine Divine” by Joseph Campbell
This book is a collection of his lectures on the Goddess. It was, essentially, my introduction into the Goddess. It is also a book that I return to from time to time for inspiration. I greatly appreciate JC’s unique way of emphasizing cross-cultural patterns and the psychological-spiritual meaning behind myths and mythic figures. Though not without a bit of controversy, JC was a brilliant comparative mythologist who truly believed that human beings could transform themselves through the wisdom of myth.
2)    “The Living Goddess” by Marija Gimbutas
Marija Gimbutas was an archeo-mythologist who dared to theorize that the people of Neolithic Old Europe and Anatolia were egalitarian and worshipped a Great Goddess. This GG was likely a prototype for the later goddess figures that we know today. She had, and still has, many critics in mainstream archeology, but I find her theories fascinating, plausible, and liberating!
3)    “Encyclopedia of Goddesses and Heroines” by Patricia Monaghan, PhD
Just a great all-around resource. She organizes by tradition, but you can use the index to find a goddess by attribute (i.e. sun goddess) or simply by name. I would trust any work written by her.
4)   “The Creation of Patriarchy” by Gerda Lerner
This book is been monumental in creating a solid theoretical framework for the development of patriarchy in the West and how it has impacted the lives of women and the role of the Great Goddess in culture.
5, 6 , & 7)
“The Politics of Women’s Spirituality” Edited by Charlene Spretnak
“Weaving the Visions” Edited by Judith Plaskow and Carol P. Christ
“Womanspirit Rising” Edited by Carol P. Christ and Judith Plaskow
These three books feature a variety of essays, poems, and visions by the “Founding Mothers” of Goddess Spirituality. These books offer context, including an historical understanding of the Goddess; how to make meaning of the Goddess and why that is important for modern women; and most important, they present the voices and experiences of women from many different traditions—not simply those of from the Judeo-Christian world. With these books, you can learn from multiple lineages and lineage holders such as Paula Allen Gunn, Gloria Anzaldúa, and Luisah Teish.
Four books I have not yet read but have been recommended to me by grad school collogues:
8)    “The Myth of the Goddess: Evolution of an Image” by Jules Cashford and Anne Baring.
9)    “The Chalice and the Blade” by Raine Eisler. A classic.
10) “The Spiral Dance” by Starhawk. An ecofeminist, permaculturist and Earth-based spirituality practitioner.
11)  “Dancing in the Flames” by Marion Woodman. She was a deeply treasured Jungian analyst and teacher who taught on the subject of feminine consciousness.
Goddess recommendations by tradition and goddess:
1)    Mary Magdalene
Okay, it’s no secret that I am a Mary Magdalene devotee and I could recommend book after book after book. But, knowing what I know now, here are three books that I would recommend people start with:
“The Woman with the Alabaster Jar” by Margaret Starbird for a well-researched approach to Mary Magdalene as bride to Christ.
“The Meaning of Mary Magdalene” by Cynthia Bourgeault for a mystical Christian approach.
“The Gospel of Mary of Magdala” by Karen L. King for a thorough academic approach.
I have a full list of recommendations here: https://www.sheislove.com/mary-magdalene-celebration
2)    Inanna & Ereshkigal
“Inanna, Queen of Heaven and Earth” by Diane Wolkenstein and Samuel Noah Kramer. A beautiful collaboration between folklorist and Assyriologist. Poetic, historical, and psycho-spiritual.
“Descent to the Goddess: A Way of Initiation for Women” by Sylvia Breton Perera. A feminist Jungian approach to meeting the unconscious feminine, or “underworld” goddess within. Mostly psychological, but also spiritual and historical.
“Uncursing the Dark” by Betty DeShong Meador. A reclamation of the wisdom of the goddess of death as well as the repressed aspect of women’s psyches and archetypal expressions; that which has been labeled “dangerous” by patriarchy.
3)    Greek Goddesses
“The Goddess” by Christine Downing. Full disclosure, she is a professor at my graduate institution.
4)    Pele
“Pele, Goddess of Hawai’i’s Volcanoes” by Herb Kawainui Kane
5)    Hinduism
“Awakening Shakti” by Sally Kempton. Love this book.
“The Goddess in India” by Devdutt Pattanaik
“Hindu Goddesses” by David R. Kinsley
6)    Buddhism
“Wisdom Rising” by Lama Tsultrim Allione
“Dakini’s Warm Breath” by Judith Simmer Brown
“Buddhist Goddesses of India” by Miranda Shaw
7)    Black Madonnas
“Black Madonnas: Feminism, religion, and politics in Italy” by Lucia Chiavola Birnbaum
8)    Yoruba Diaspora
“The Divine Horsemen: Living Gods of Haiti” by Maya Deren. A slightly dated book but very good introduction to Haitian Vodun.
9)    Ecofeminism – If you want to understand the connection between the treatment of the planet and women under patriarchy. Timely in terms of understanding the psychological components behind climate change
“Gaia and God” by Rosemary Radford Ruether
“Ecofeminism” by Vandana Shiva and Maria Mies
“Reweaving the World” edited by Irene Diamond and Gloria Feman Orenstein

Battle of the Blades Episode 1 Review
For those who saw my earlier post, I got to go to the live taping of BOTB in Hamilton...my tickets were the front row (excluding VIP) so I got a really really good view! Here is my review of the show. I’m gonna talk about all of the couples in the order they skated. I was also gonna talk about the judges and some comments on the show overall but I’ll save that for another post since this is getting long.
A quick intro into the format. So during the commercial break, which is about 3 minutes, the skaters on deck get to warm up. For most of it, everyone focused on stroking with a few timers for lifts in there. The skaters are scored in the 10.0 system rather than 6.0 in the past which was a little weird. For today’s show, Tessa and Scott counted as one judge (they gave one score together). I felt like I was watching NCAA gymnastics for a bit. In the past, eliminations were based solely on viewer votes; the scores were just guidelines. Now like DWTS, its a combination of viewer votes and the judge's scores. The bottom two based on that will be required to compete in a skate-off next week and the winner of the skate-off is selected by the judges. Winner stays, loser goes home.
I went with my younger sister who is a figure skater so the technical comments come from her. It was great sitting with her to get that insight. Scroll below the cut for all my comments.
Natalie Spooner and Andrew Poje
They were the first ones to go so they had the pressure of setting the bar for everyone. Nat was away at Hockey Canada’s national team camp for about 8 days and she only got back to figure skating Monday morning, leaving three full days of rehearsals before the show.
Naturally, Natalie seemed very very nervous in this warm-up, almost looking like she was about to throw up. She kept looking at the ground while skating (a big no-no, as per my sister) and I noticed a few times Andrew reminded her to look up.
While the warm-up may have been a recipe for a bad skate, the routine was anything but! Nat had a huge smile on her face and seemed to have fun the entire time once the program got started. There was one major lift, a knee slide in there, and some footwork. Andrew and the choreographers did a good job adding a little mix of everything and they highlighted that Natalie was a strong skater (compared to many of the others). Completely forgot the fact that she’s hopping back and forth between hockey and figure skates because of her national team commitments.
They ended with 27.9 (9.3′s across the board) for T-3rd overall.
Colton Orr and Amanda Evora
Amanda is the reigning BOTB champion so there’s a little bit of expectation for her there. She’s skating for Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada in honour of a friend of hers who recently passed away (I think he’s the father of one of her students, Grace Knoop?)
Overall, they weren’t terrible but there wasn’t anything exciting about them. They did two lifts and a death spiral but the remainder mostly felt like stroking. Colton was also very right and like Kurt said, didn’t allow his lower body to move freely and separately from the upper body. Time could help with this but they were in last place with 27.4 (9.2 from Colby Armstrong, 9.1 from VM and Kurt). They will need the votes and potentially a good skate-off next week to be safe for week 3. My sister thinks they’ll be the ones to go home first and I agree with her.
Sheldon Kennedy and Kaitlyn Weaver
tw: abuse, sexual abuse
Sheldon’s intro piece focused on the abuse he suffered at the hands of his hockey coach Graham James. CBC did not shy away from the topic. They stated that Graham kept trading for Sheldon in the junior leagues so he could keep abusing him. The intro piece then showed how Sheldon took this terrible thing that happened to him and made it his life’s mission to educate the world and have these discussions so it doesn’t happen again.
What was truly amazing was how the crowd erupted in cheers for Sheldon at that part. It felt like the entire country of Canada is proud of Sheldon for the person he has become. I could see Sheldon getting a little emotional by that response.
They skated to Wake Me Up by Avicii which kinda tells the story of Sheldon wanting to run away from hockey to escape his abuse but found himself again and found joy in his life. And this routine was the literal definition of fun and joy. Sheldon and Kaitlyn had the biggest smiles on their faces and were both having the time of their life.
Not to take away from the fun, but they also skated probably the most difficult routine technically out there. There was an overhead lift. This is especially amazing considering Sheldon is only 5′10″ and Kaitlyn is 5′7″. Kaitlyn was not going easy on him and threw in a bit of the Yankee Polka pattern dance. YANKEE POLKA. AND they made sure to get the crowd involved too.
They received a well deserved, unanimous standing ovation. Like everyone was standing up, even the women with canes in the rows behind me. And they finished the night with 28.3 (9.4, 9.4, 9.5 from Kurt) in first place.
Amanda Kessel and Eric Radford
In the intro piece, you could see how much Amanda really looks up to her older brother Phil Kessel (Stanley Cup winner with Pittsburgh) and I think that’s so precious. She even chose Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto as her charity after seeing Phil bring the Stanley Cup to the kids and seeing their reactions and subsequently the work Sick Kids does for these children and their families.
Amanda and Eric skated to “Juice” by Lizzo so I was already excited for that. In terms of training footage, both Amanda and Eric posted a lot of lifts so I was excited to see what they were planning. They did do a fair number of lifts and a death spiral in there which were well executed. However, beyond that, I felt Amanda was very similar to Colton as she was very tight and rigid. Because she was the one being lifted, it was less noticeable compared to Colton–the lifts and tricks in a sense “broke apart” the tight skating.  They ended in second last, with 27.7 (9.3 from Colby, 9.2 from the others)
Brian McGrattan and Vanessa James
Brian McGrattan is a Hamilton Native so this was a homecoming for him. He lives in Calgary now but a lot of family and friends were here supporting him. Brian discussed his struggles with anxiety and depression which lead to alcoholism. He then sought treatment through the NHL’s alcohol abuse program.
Side note: It’s amazing that CBC, and these hockey players, are not shying away from these difficult topics. Brian McGrattan is a 6′4″, big, tattooed, enforcer. If he can come out on national TV and say “hey I struggled with depression and anxiety and I sought help”, I hope that inspires other boys and men to not shy away from these problems. The stigma with mental health is stronger with men and boys and I think people like Brian can make a difference. So kudos to the players and CBC for having these topics.
The program overall was elegant and vulnerable which is a completely different side to what people are used to for Brian, but he pulled it off really well. Brian truly opened himself up and was committed to the program. Technically they had some amazing lifts and a good connection. Overall they scored 27.9 to tie for 3rd with Natalie and Andrew but the individual judges were all over the place a bit (9.4 from Colby, 9.3 from VM, 9.2 from Kurt)
Bruno Gervais and Ekaterina Gordeeva
I’m just gonna start off by saying Bruno Gervais is an amazing dude. Just out of the goodness of his heart essentially, he started a charity with his close friend Max Talbot (husband of former Canadian Ladies’ Champion Cynthia Phaneuf) which provides underprivileged children with opportunities, ranging from sports to funding hospitals. They started this charity together when both were just 23 years old!
Katia is a queen. That is all that needs to be said. She was referred to as the G.O.A.T. by Kurt and Ron MacLean many times throughout the night, and rightly so. Both of them worked with Elladj Balde a fair bit which was very helpful for them. Elladj is trilingual (English, Russian, and French)–Katia’s first language is Russian and Bruno’s is French so Elladj communicated with them in their respective mother tongues.
Elladj’s influence was seen at the beginning of the routine with Bruno busting out some [very good] dance moves. His skating was very fluid and relaxed and he was very comfortable with the lifts, even doing a “combination lift” per se which involved a lot of twists and turns. They got a partial standing ovation from the crowd, the only other team to do so. I forget their score off the top of my head but they were in second place, close to Sheldon and Kaitlyn.
So that’s my review of the skates...stay tuned tomorrow for comments on the judges and the show overall.
Also, my messages are open if you want to ask me about anything in particular!

Parade of Democratic 2020 Hopefuls Push for Momentum in Iowa
A cavalcade of Democratic presidential hopefuls on Friday tried to turn a few precious minutes before Iowa voters into the momentum needed to catapult their campaigns in the pivotal state.
A rite of passage for Democratic presidential candidates, the annual “Wing Ding Dinner” featured five-minute speeches from almost two dozen contenders seeking the party’s nomination to take on Republican President Donald Trump in the November 2020 election.
Iowa’s caucuses in February kick off the Democratic nomination process and can provide a candidate with crucial early momentum.
Despite the fact that many of the candidates urgently need to differentiate themselves among the horde, most of them trained their fire at Trump, not each other.
Some said Trump had inflamed social tensions with anti-immigrant and racially charged rhetoric, helping prompt mass shootings in Texas and Ohio last weekend that left 31 dead.
Pete Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, accused Trump of “coddling white nationalists.”
The suspect in the El Paso shooting reportedly posted a hate-filled manifesto directed at Latinos before the massacre.
Former Vice President Joe Biden said Trump “offers no moral leadership. He has no interest in unifying this country.”
Trump, he said, has adopted a political strategy of “hate, racism and division.”
Former U.S. Congressman Beto O’Rourke, who is from El Paso, did not speak at the event, but appeared in a video accusing Trump of fostering “hatred, racism and intolerance.”
Tim Ryan, a U.S. congressman from Ohio, urged Congress to pass an assault weapons ban.
“People are dying on the streets of this country, being killed by weapons made for the battlefield,” Ryan said. “This country will never be safe until we get these weapons of war off the streets.”
There were some signs of the ideological and generational tensions within the party. Montana Governor Steve Bullock, a moderate, decried sweeping progressive proposals that he said were “written for press releases.”
But when progressive U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren championed her plan to provide “Medicare for All” and levy a tax on the nation’s wealthiest, she received loud cheers.
Buttigieg took a subtle jab at Biden, who often touts his work as vice president under President Barack Obama.
“We can’t look like we’re the party of back to normal,” Buttigieg said. “What we have now isn’t working, but normal wasn’t working either.”
FARMER FALLOUT
There were also references to Iowa’s economy, where farmers have been caught in the fallout from Trump’s decision to slap tariffs on Chinese goods.
“Trade war by tweet is not working for our farmers,” Warren said.
After the event, Cynthia Donovan, 62, of Sioux City, Iowa said she was most impressed by Buttigieg and Warren.
Donovan, who has not chosen a candidate to support, said she was “looking for somebody who can unify. Somebody who can change some of the damage that this current administration has done on trade, immigration and humanity.”
The event, a fundraiser for the state Democratic Party that serves up piles of chicken wings, attracts activists and organizers in the Midwestern state whose support can bolster a presidential bid.
As the state that holds the first nominating contest each election cycle, Iowa plays an outsized role in picking presidential nominees. Only the top finishers in Iowa’s February caucuses will likely survive to continue their candidacies.
Underscoring the state’s importance, several 2020 candidates made Iowa their first presidential campaign stop this year. That included Biden, who said he was not taking his front-runner status for granted as he returned to Iowa this week.
U.S. Senators Kamala Harris of California and Senator Warren of Massachusetts both embarked this week on bus tours across the state to try to galvanize their supporters.
Throughout the weekend, some 20 candidates will also take turns appearing at the Iowa State Fair, ascending the infamous “soapbox” to deliver their pitch to voters and take questions.

#Jayma #Mays #Biography #Photos #Wallpapers #black #filmmaking #flight #food #hot #likes #makeup #music #sky #view
Three years after graduating with a degree in Performing Arts from Radford University, Jayma Mays landed on her initial on screen appearance with a guest spot in a September 2004 episode of NBC sitcom “Joey.” She followed it up with much more guest roles in such TV series as HBO mockumentary/sitcom starring Lisa Kudrow, “The Comeback,” HBO comedy-drama “Six Feet Under,” CBS sitcom “How I Met Your Mother” and FOX sitcom “Stacked.” She as well debuted on the huge screen alongside Rachel McAdams, Cillian Murphy and Brian Cox in Wes Craven’s drama/thriller Red Eye (2005), playing Cynthia, the assistant of a hotel manager (played by McAdams) who is held captive aboard a red eye flight to Miami.
Following her film debut, Mays returned to television guest starring in an episode of FOX’s critically-acclaimed medical drama “House M.D.” and NBC dramedy “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.” She also had recurring roles on HBO dramedy “Entourage” and NBC drama series “Heroes.” Additionally, she was cast in the comedic TV movie If You Lived Here, You’d Be Home Now (2006), starring Zac Efron.
Moviegoers subsequently saw Mays played a nurse in Clint Eastwood’s Academy Award-nominated film Flags of Our Fathers (2006), a war drama film which details the Battle of Iwo Jima and Raising the flag on Iwo Jima.
