"It's AWESOME, isn't it?" Ricky knows his boyfriend is much more of a summer type, but he's used to the cold himself, and New York is probably the prettiest city during winter and Christmas time he's seen so far. "We should go ice skating at the Rockefeller Center tomorrow," It's a cliché, Ricky is well aware, but it also feels like something that every couple should have done at least once. Or well, maybe he just really wants THEM to do it.
Ricky lets himself be pulled in for another kiss, enjoying the fact that he has Jere back for now. It's still hard, doing long distance, but they've managed OKAY so far, or at least that's what he thinks anyway.
Tumblr media
Of course he was here, Jeremiah wouldn't miss being with Ricky for this Christmas party for anything. He and Conrad would spend Christmas together, and that was fine. He was going to have a good time now with his boyfriend. New York was so beautifully decorated and Jere really loved to see all of the cheer around them.
The party was nice and he got to see some of Ricky's friends, which was fun. He liked them all, so it was easy for him to feel a sense of peace around all of them. Taking Ricky's hand, he leads him under one of the mistletoe that was hanging up and smiles at him. "Hello, handsome." He smiles wider before they kiss and he wraps his arms around his boyfriend's waist. "I'm so glad that I made it too, but you know I wouldn't miss it. You and your friends and this party. And New York during Christmas time? It's gorgeous." He grins. "I really can't be happier than I am right now being here with you." He kisses him again and holds him tight.

Happy 60th birthday, John D. Rockerduck!
Although I may be late, 60 years ago, on December 3, 1961, the genius Carl Barks drew and wrote a comic book called "Boat Buster", where he first appeared, John D. Rockerduck, and who clashed with Scrooge and where Donald Duck participated in a boat race competition. Rockerduck was modeled on John D. Rockefeller, the king of oilmen of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Rockerduck did not appear much in American comics, but that is why he appeared very often in Brazilian and European comics, especially in Italian comics, where Rockerduck is a much bigger rival for Scrooge than Glomgold. Glomgold is also a great opponent of Scrooge and once Glomgold and Rockerduck were allies. Certainly, John D. Rockerduck has his ingenious partner, butler and secretary in one, and that is Lusky or Jeeves, Aunt Eider and his nephews Arsène, George, Patrick, Simeon and Ricky Rockerduck. Yes, we should not forget Rockerduck's parents, mother "Ciccia" and father Howard. Certainly, Rockerduck is involved in Oil tycoon and modern business, and often in conflict with Scrooge, he loses and certainly eats his hat. Unfortunately, unlike Glomgold, Rockerduck appeared only once in the animation and that was in the Ducktales reboot. Hopefully they will show up often. Certainly, as always, there are pictures of himself and his family through various comics and cartoons.
For me, he is one of the favorite characters in Duckverse and great villains. Happy birthday, dear Johnny! Yes, he is celebrating his 60th birthday!
If you are a fan of John D. Rockerduck, his butler Jeeves and his family, feel free to like this and reblog this! Happy 60th birthday, John D. Rockerduck!

DECEMBER 23, 2020
IT HAD ONLY BEEN TWO AND A HALF WEEKS since the Caledonia agents had sent their notes -- through high security and heavily coded -- back to Mr. Stewart and Caledonia’s Oxford home base, knowing with these notes more direction will be given regarding their mission assignments. Anxiety is high in December, though there’s many reasons why: awaiting their assignments, finals, the holidays, and of course the tragedy that had plagued the last Friday of the fall semester, something even a professional wouldn’t have been able to anticipate.
Winter break could not come soon enough, but it hasn’t begun yet. On the very last day of the semester, the five agents each received a letter in the mail from a different “family member,” assumed to be writing to them or sending them money before the holidays. But instead of Christmas cards, each of the double agents -- Cole Conner, Evangeline Astor, Allister Davis, Cecilia Casiraghi, and Christian Torres -- had received a single piece of paper in their envelopes, note coded and succinct.
------
Cole Conner,
You have been reassigned to seek out information regarding the death that had taken place on campus on December 18, including how it had happened and if anyone had been involved. Judging from Gallagher’s reputation, we expect foul play to have played a part in it.
------
Evangeline Astor, Continue your preliminary assignment regarding collecting information on notable students and their families, specifically targeting the following students:
Maria Flicke
Charles Eaton
Rizo Guinto
Fallon Sur
Tilly Longfellow
Maddox Discanio
Mary Sakamoto
Luc Montagnier
Trinity Ibarra
Dana Kristiansen
------
Allister Davis,
Continue your preliminary assignment regarding finding a way to bypass the firewall and run this program to try and find what kind of encryption they got going to get into the database where the files are stored. If necessary, use the following students for help, without compromising your mission:
Calypso Marshall
Ophelia Spencer
Arin Callister
Miray Tabak
Kassandra Sutton
------
Cecilia Casiraghi,
After careful consideration regarding your notes for potential recruits for the agency, your assignment is to recruit the following students, while using the utmost discretion:
Danny Ishida
Ting Zhao
Conor Edwards
Beatrice Fitzsimmons
Thalia Hall
Julian Eaton
Ace Rockefeller
Maria Flicke
------
Christian Torres,
Continue your preliminary assignment with monitoring our agents in the field. After receiving your notes on their progress, your assignment is to also monitor the following students closest to our field agents, assuring these relationships won’t compromise our mission or their productivity.
Nico Casiraghi
Anya Casiraghi
Natasha Volkov
Ricky Alonso
Marifer Valverde
Valeria Sutton
Kassandra Sutton
Mary Sakamoto
Rizo Guinto
Owen Musa
Tilly Longfellow
Maddox Discanio
Georgia Brandt
We’re also interested in seeing the rest of Cole Conner’s notes he hasn’t shared with us. Obtain the rest of his files and send them as soon as possible.
------
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2020
IT’S DANGEROUS FOR THEM TO ALL BE MEETING AT ONCE, and Cecilia Casiraghi can feel that danger in her chest, heart thumping on adrenaline and anxiety, as she makes her way through the forest in the middle of the night. She lets the flashlight on her phone and the light of the moon guide her towards their designated meeting spot, under the tree with the tire swing right beside Lac Forestier.  Cecilia feels a pang of annoyance when she realizes she’s the last to arrive.   “I got a little lost,”  she tells them with a huff, not sounding very at all sorry about it.   “I didn’t realize this is the furthest possible point from the campus.”  It’s not, but it practically feels like it.   “Will this take long?  It’s chilly out here.”
"And she finally arrives," Allister Davis says, pushing himself onto his feet to smile warmly at the other. "Was getting worried there, we thought that Gilly had got a hold of you." Even with his frustrations and desire to be inside, Allister still tries to joke around and keep up the act that everything was great and that nothing was wrong.
Cole Conner does a good job of masking it-- because, well, it's his entire job-- but he is always keeping a healthy level of panic at bay. He knows what happens here will inform the way the future can either go very well or very poorly for him, so his mind can't stop turning over possibilities and variables even as he pretends to be composed and quiet. "It's fine, just turn the flashlight off. It'll take as long as we need, so I hope none of you have plans." It's not a glare per say, but the look Cecilia gives Cole isn't particularly warm, though she does listen and shuts off her flashlight.
“You're the one most likely to have plans, Mr. Popular," Evangeline Astor pipes up, a not-so-subtle dig as she glances in Cole's direction, mainly irritated at the way he seems to self-dub himself the leader at these things. "So, I guess we should all state what things we plan to include in our report? And see where we overlap, or...maybe where we can contribute to each other's work," she points out.
"I'm mostly finished with my report,"  Cecilia throws it out there, making sure everyone knows that she's doing what she has to.  "I have a list of students that I think he'll be interested in, and really, whether they're on your lists or not doesn't really matter, does it?  Though I tried to stay away from encryption students,"  she adds, glancing over at Allister for a moment.
"Well, I think Evangeline is right,” Cole adds. “If we've doubled up anywhere we might be able to provide more insight for one another before we draw up a full report for Stewart. And, Allister, if you have any update on where you are with encryption, that'd be helpful as well."
"Of course she's right, that's my captain for you!" Allister says with a wide grin, referring to Eva and their last conversation with each other. "Me? Oh, I have nothing. Haven't done anything since we've been here," Allister tells the group with a straight face. It doesn't last as he chuckles to himself, making sure not to be too loud. "I'm kidding, obviously. I have some names, working on getting more. I don't remember them all off the top of my head, I have them saved on my computer." Cecilia elbows Allister lightly in the ribs.
"Thanks, Allister," Eva gives a slight shake of her head, because he's ridiculous. "You don't remember any of them?”
"Okay, maybe I remember like two or three but! I'm not sure if Blaire, Rocky, and Stacy are even their real names." The three girls who run the gossip blog. Call him ridiculous or a dumbass but he has his reason to seek out these three.
"You don't know their...real names? I think we're going to need a touch more detail than that," Eva says, unable to keep the condescension out of her voice. “A lot of my initial work is fairly obvious, I'll admit, the biggest legacy names on campus – though I'm sure Cole has a lot he could contribute regarding the Sutton family. Aren't you joining them for Thanksgiving dinner?" Her tone is almost mocking, she can't help herself.
"I'm afraid your job might be the most difficult of us all," Cole tells the other boy. "Breaking through without getting caught, I mean." As Evangeline speaks, Cole is about to agree with her until she brings up the Suttons, and he has to hold back the instinct to tense up. "It's expected of me, yes.”
"It's a shame you wasted a year dating Val, when I'm sure I could get just about any information you have on her from being her roommate this year,"  Cecilia sends a shrug in his direction, and Cole doesn't bother in taking too much care to hide the slight annoyance on his face as he brings a hand to his temple.
"I'm very sure, Miss Casiraghi. And while I am genuinely glad you all get to come to a Gallagher while there's no threat, last year was a much different story."
"Oh yeah, didn't someone die last semester?" Nex to him, Cecilia rolls her eyes at Allister.
"Yes, two girls died last semester, in the old mill...due to the Brotherhood? Allister, this is basic Gallagher knowledge,” Eva reminds him. “That said, Brotherhood or otherwise, nothing should be able to stop us from completing our mission. If anything, it should keep us alert that we're not the only people trying to infiltrate Gallagher's walls. And don't worry, Cole," she flashes him a smile this time, "this year, you have us for support next time you can't hold it together when faced with an obstacle. But speaking of getting sloppy..." she trails off, opening her notes, "you know Rizo Guinto, correct?"
Cole is calm, polite, and demure as he simply replies, "I'm glad you're here," with a gentle smile on his face, despite his own anger beginning to rise. And then she mentions Rizo. To his credit, Cole doesn't falter, but inside he does steel himself. "I know him, yes. What have you got Evangeline?" he asks.
Leaning into Cecilia's personal bubble, Allister whispers, "how much you wanna bet that she's gonna deck him before we leave tonight?"
"My money is on Eva,"  she whispers back, though not nearly quiet enough for the others not to hear.  "Also if you find out who actually runs the gossip blog, let me know."
"I'm glad we can help," Eva assures Cole, "and hopefully we don't run into any similar hangups – a threat to Gallagher's reputation could be good, but never at such a cost. It's more about...what he's got," she frowns slightly, "he's very interested in you, Cole. To the point where he's done quite a bit of research on your interests and background. I don't know whether he's a threat, but we should be keeping an eye on him. It's a bit suspicious. I know I shouldn't have to tell you this, but...be careful."
Cecilia’s head whips back to where Eva is when she talks about Rizo, lips curving into a surprised smile.  "Aw, does someone have a crush on him? Cole, you dog. That's adorable. Nobody tell Valeria."
“You should ask him about it," Cole tells her point blank. "I'm sure the information he has will be very useful to you. Now, should we get back to the matter at hand? And viable leads, Miss Astor?" he goes on, after giving Cecilia a very pointed look for her annoying remarks.
"I'm just saying...you're Mr. Popular around here," Eva notes, because dating the president's daughter certainly comes with an amount of recognition, "there are risks with that." She grimaces at the way everyone keeps asking her what she's got while continuing to offer up nothing for themselves, but fine, it's like they're begging to know why she's better than them and she'll oblige. "I think it makes sense to look into the students with the highest clearance. The Suttons, Mira, Kass, and Val, and then Maddox and Tilly, Irene Bradford's children. There's family secrets, yes, but I'm sure the school itself has secrets we haven't yet uncovered."
"I personally have a nice, long list to send to Mr. Stewart,”  Cecilia pipes up unprompted, not bothering hiding the smugness from her tone, because she's proud of what she's accomplished so far. "I mentioned her to you already, Eva, but Maria Flicke and I are good friends, and she strikes me as the type completely suited for Caledonia. Danny Ishida, too, though he's a bit more reserved. Also first year, Ting Zhao." Cecilia glances over at Cole. "Am I saying anybody that sounds completely out of line?"
Cole holds back a sigh from Eva's comment, because it certainly hadn't been his intention, but she's right anyhow. Initially Val had been a good lead because she was the quieter of the Sutton girls, a first year without as much of a stamp on the school as Kass. "I'll be fine. Do you think the twins have secrets?" he asks, a genuine question. Because aside from their parents, who the whole school already knows about, he can't imagine anything else lurking in their past. "Danny Ishida. That might be a good one," Cole agrees, because he has an inkling that it might actually not be.
"Wait, are you going for all of the Suttons or just the main three? Ting would be perfect for Caledonia!" Allister adds. A friend from Gallagher would be nice to have, especially when he goes back to being himself. "Okay, let's see... I got Calypso Marshall.... Arin Callistor and.... Miray Tabak."
"Right, you mentioned Ria to me. I've been looking into her family, I'll let you know if I find anything," Eva says to Cecilia, though she's definitely bitter that it's Cole that Cecilia looks to for approval. "I highly doubt there's much about the twins, their parents are what I'm more interested in. No one knows what exactly Irene was doing all summer, just that she wasn't here and her correspondence was limited, and she's known Laura since she was a teen, they seem...close. And their father's completely off the grid again...it's worth looking into. I think all of the Suttons are worth at least basic investigation. We're looking for information on the school and they're at the center."
"Is anyone looking into the Brandts?  Since I doubt what Allister is doing with Gigi counts,"  Cecilia sends a pointed look in his direction.  "It seems odd all three siblings are at a spy uni when their family isn't in the business."
"There's already the ordeal of Valeria and Kassandra’s father," Cole offers, if only so Eva will maybe back down even a little bit. "That's common knowledge, of course, but I'm working on more. I'm also looking into the Blacks, Alonsos, and Reign Tech. Results varying," Cole adds, and he hopes throwing some more darts on the board will help spread their resources than needling on just the Suttons. "Georgia seems to have... something going on, and getting close to her that way might actually bear fruit.”
“Just be careful with the Suttons,” Allister warns. “Apparently one of them is a Japanese Princess.” Chills run down his spine at the thought of Suzume. “Compared to her older siblings, Gigi is the best person to get information out of. Parker and Max are difficult to pry information from, but Gigi? A true clipmalabor! I’m sure the two of you have figured that out,” he says to Eva and Cecilia.
Eva glances towards the Scottish boy. "Well, Allister – you've spent so much time with Gigi, have you discovered anything useful? I think it's possible, however Parker and Maxine likely have more access to their family's accounts, they probably know things Gigi doesn't, even as a true...clipmalabor, not to mention that Steve Park is hovering over her shoulder at all times. If you haven't gotten anything useful out of her by now, we might be wasting time – a look through Maxine's email accounts and correspondence is probably worth the effort."
"I've been friends with Gigi since the first day of school,” Cecilia comments, “ and all she's told me is where all her family's houses are. If you ask me, her needing a bodyguard in a spy school is ridiculous, but that probably shows how useless she is. You'd have better luck with her siblings." She's not the one looking for information, so she doesn't feel the need to disclose her relationship with Parker -- it's not exactly relevant.
“Did you guys know that Gigi died when she was younger but came back to life? Now she can speak to the dead! Not just any bodyguard, he’s a Park. That name means a lot around here.” Though, there’s not much that he’s gotten out of Steve so just like Gigi, Allister is useless for this mission. “You want me to hack into Maxine’s email accounts? Easy enough. I can also check out Parker’s, I’m sure he’s hiding something as well.”
"Right, very useful, Allister, thank you," Eva deadpans. "You'd think someone in need of a bodyguard wouldn't be giving out all of her personal addresses...which sort of leads me to believe that she's probably not involved with whatever her family is hiding. Yeah, I think that's a good start, since they're both involved with the family business, if there's anything there, that could be a way in.”
"The Brandts aside, I think we'd all do well to either focus on current leads or find new avenues. I trust you're all blending in as well as Cecilia is?" Cole asks sarcastically, knowing that Cecilia was making friends with practically everyone (and maybe even more than that). "I'm sure I don't need to tell you, but stay alert. We should keep each other posted on anything that might be trouble."
Eva gives a short nod. "It's true, we all have our own work to do, but we should be looking out for each other. This was...not extremely productive, but it was good to talk, I guess."
"We didn't come all this way just for this, did we?" Cecilia huffs, and she'd agree with Eva that this doesn't feel very productive.
"It's necessary, nonetheless," Cole replies plainly, and he's hardly concerned about how annoying he may come off to any of them. "We'll have more to do after we hear back from him."

“Margetta Hirsch Doyle ’45 was a regular student at William & Mary. Her friends called her 'Getta' and she was a Kappa Delta. Doyle kept a diary and wrote about her philosophy quizzes, described how much she enjoyed making Red Cross surgical wrappings and mentioned hours spent spotting airplanes from campus buildings. Doyle was a student during World War II.
During the second World War, William & Mary became a predominantly female campus. While many college-age males fought abroad, women kept up the war effort from Williamsburg. In between their studies and social life, students volunteered with the Student War Council and the American Red Cross. Along with other service work, they, like Doyle, made surgical dressings and spotted airplanes, sometimes in groups and sometimes alone.”
Margetta Hirsch Doyle's Entries for May, 1943:
MAY 1
Happy May Day! It was Saturday and so we didn’t do much. Cary, Beth, Mrs. Dalthud and I went marketing and made out pretty well. Cary and I made the first major mistake of our careers as housekeepers. We bought birdseye fish for dinner (no points) and naturally thought we should keep it frozen in the ice box. By the time Lizzie and Flora arrived there were just so many chunks of ice lieing there. We all howled hysterically over it and had a vegetable plate dinner (I hope the fish will thaw by Monday!) This afternoon Cary and I went down town and to the Wigwam. I wrote some letters, changed the bedding on my bed and generally wasted time - worked tonight. I received a card from Bill Brennan - his 29 day training is almost up.
MAY 2
Such an unusual little day! We slept unusually late and then Beth, Punchy and I dressed to go to church. As we came out of Bruton, Joy Allen pounced upon Punchy and me saying Cary had walked by with two ensigns and a lieutenant j.g. and wanted us to walk up to the Lodge and meet them. Bewildered, we looked at each other with a what-the-heck attitude and walked on up. Sure enough, there was Cary with three naval officers! We soon became acquainted and had loads of fun drinking champagne cocktails and eating dinner. After awhile we came back to the house and played the vic. It was really a terrifically pleasant afternoon. Cary, Punchy and I pored through the want ads and I wrote six or seven letters of application to see how the land lies. I tried to phone Bill Brennan to wish him a happy birthday but couldn't get the call thru.
MAY 3
Things may seem “awfully dismal” at times but I’m really so very lucky and the bright spots of life are so nice. Tonight - brazen hussy that I am! - while down at work I placed a call through to Bill Brennan again. It wouldn't come, but the little operator kept trying (pull!) and finally just after I got back to the house the phone rang and a voice said “Boy! This is wonderful!” Ya huh, ‘twas Willy and gosh it was super talking to him. It wasn't at all like a typical long distance conversation - we just said dumb old things and deep things and you’d have thought we were both in Hollis rather than in Billsburg and Atlantic City respectively. So nice! Oh I forgot to mention that I got a perky letter from him too. I’m beaming obnoxiously. I wish…….. My life has a mysterious element too. This evening while I was out two darling marines came to see me, one of who “was a very good friend of a girl from home.” Vague, but I hope they come back!
MAY 4
I’ve still glowed all day from last night’s phone call, and even now nice things keep happening. At lunchtime the package man came bearing a gift for me: a lush "bon bon" spoon with an awfully sweet note from “Mom” Brennan -- I was so tickled with it, and love her good. We rushed today informally - Betty Marie Ellett for lunch and two other girls for dinner with the usual accompanying intra-sorority feeling. Initiation for Jinx Richardson, Ann Wilson and Eleanor Ramsdell was last night and so we had a cup service at seven o’clock this morning - then classes, marketing, fun and work. I received real nice letters from Mother and Daddy and a faintly perky one from Bill Boyd. He is trying to stall off his furlough until June when I’ll be home. Gosh, I hope it’ll work. I’m so lucky! Flat Hat mentioned Punchy’s & my badminton defeat.
MAY 5
This morning was the annual convocation for the tapping of the members of the junior class chosen to be Mortarboard and ODK. It was very impressive and full of suspense, since supposedly noone knew who was to be selected. Fran Pendleton was one of the five girls to get Mortarboard and we’re all very thrilled about the whole thing. The other girls were Margie Lentz, Katie Rutherford, Marion Ross, and [Lebe] Seay. Mary Wilson Carver is the new president. Punchy, Carolyn Harley and I went up on Barrett roof sunbathing and got faintly tanned. Then we went shopping for Mother’s Day gifts and had our pictures taken at the telephone office. Per usual when having our pictures taken, Punchy sneered and I had “my fixed look” sat on the camera, but we’re celebrities anyway. Beth & Marty won badminton matched over Gamma Phi.
MAY 6
“Rabbit - rabbit” really worked this month cause things keep getting better ‘n’ better. Today was a usual Thursday: marketing classes (Econ outside in the Sunken Gardens), archery (I’m off the 30 yd line at last) and swimming. After that we went downtown to the official dedication of the U.S.O., with music and speeches, including one by John D. Rockefeller, ‘Jr. ‘Twas sort of impressive. Yearbooks came out today and it’s the best Colonial Echo in years. We spent considerable time in poring over it, laughing and "ohing" and "ahing". Remember the marines I wrote about Monday night? Well, Warren Ripley came back this evening and is awfully nice. He knows Mary Claire Willard from St. Mary’s and she gave him my name. -- small world. He, a goon, Mavis Bunch and I went to the movies (”Truck Busters” was horrible) and then to the Lodge coffee shoppe
MAY 7
I’m awfully tired, and in a bad mood though still awfully happy about everything. Such a nice life? Nothing exciting happened today. I didn't go marketing, but instead went up in the Library tower for two hours - once with Cary and once with Midge - spotting airplanes. I managed to get a bit of studying done for my philosophy quiz which I sleepily took. (B- on last week’s) I went over to the office to get a social card for Warren and ended up talking in Louise’s room; then I wrote letters to both Bills and fooled around. Holly Rickis has come back for the weekend - it’s natural to have her here. Work was bitter - everything went wrong and the time dragged. A “nice voice” called me up and chatted and a sailor walked us home. Such a masculine life as I’ve been having glimpses into. I can’t get over it! Floyd wrote me from Hunter Field, Georgia
MAY 8
The weekend has come and I’ve resolved to purely have fun - and how it has started! This afternoon Beth and I went downtown to do our weekly shopping for odds and ends and then she Punchy and I went sunbathing by the practice house with Danny and Eleanor Ramsdell, It’s really hot too! Warren came by with two other marines to tell me that they were going to Richmond and he mightn’t be back right on time for our date tomorrow night. Seeing the other two marines I promised Beth & Punchy dates tomorrow night - and I dood it. Every few minutes, after we were all together I would say “Do you really want to do to Richmond?” and finally we talked them into staying for a howl of an evening. We saw “Air Force” one of the best pictures I’ve ever seen, and went to the Lodge. Ray and Dick kept wanting to be in Richmond, and kept making all sorts of classic remarks! Such fun!
MAY 9
Happy Mother’s Day -- and what a day! Being hot, we lazily relaxed around the house and didn't quite get to church. I wrote home and Bugsie, changed the bedding on my bed and dressed for dinner. In the middle of it Warren (who wasn't supposed to arrive until late this afternoon) came with Ray, and thus began the second day of my truly unusual experience. Since there isn’t much to do with a date here on Sunday afternoons we went for a walk through the woods and then sat and watched people playing tennis, after which we went to the movies and saw “Air Force” again. Then we went up to the Lodge for champagne cocktails and a howl of a dinner - amusing (!) episode about the time and the tip. What a boy! Mother phoned tonight - and then Harold from Camp Peary phoned me. He sounds nice but you can’t tell. He phoned the telephone co.
MAY 10
Nothing at all new again. Classes, marketing and quite a lot of studying this afternoon! I actually did some English Lit and then typed away on an interview for Psychology, letting my imagination run rampant with information. I really did get from Warren on the subject “Alcohol and You”. This evening there was the last W.S.C.G.A. meeting of the year, and then we went to an Economics makeup, disturbed by retreat’s being blown from the naval chaplains in our right ears. After that, we had song practice and sorority meeting, made vivid by stirring remarks about the state of the treasury and the consequences of not paying fines and the like. We had a dreamy serenade by Eddie Anderson and two other boys complete with guitar and drooled out the window at its romanticism.
MAY 11
I went to classes, and then as usual went downtown with Cary to do the marketing - was amazed that some boxes of puddings had arrived in town - it made our housekeeping have a bright spot for the day. Archery was nice in that I got off the 40 yd line in one try. I must have just been jinxed by the 30 yd line - I have a new lease on life now though. On the way back from archery, I stopped in to see Holly, Kay and Louise and talked to them for awhile before coming back to the house and getting ready to have my picture taken again for the Transmitter, the Telephone Co. periodical. Speaking of pictures, the Flat Hat came out today with our crummy picture and the writeup. Punchy and I are celebrities! Mother phoned about Daddy’s maybe coming down and to say she has the measles - imagine! Harold also phoned me!
MAY 12
Another awfully nice day! After classes and marketing I did my philosophy and then Beth and I rolled bandages for the Red Cross with Mrs. Pomfret. Beth and Punchy played badminton intramurals with Theta and won - I silently stood by and cheered. Warren was here when we got back & stayed till I had to go to work. He wanted a date tonight and Friday night too but I work both nights and so I got out of it very easily. He’s a nice fellow but a little too eccentric to be very enjoyable. In the mail I got a “big” picture of Bill Brennan in uniform. He looks good and it’s interesting to compare it to the other big picture I have of him. He’s so neat and how I’d like to see him! He enclosed a note as did his mom.
MAY 13
Gad! I’m weary! Today was another one of those days where nothing noteworthy happened but little thing after little thing kept piling up till I haven’t got much energy left. Why do I bother to mention classes, marketing and my athletic afternoon? I’m stuck on the 50 yd line in Archery and in swimming after I emerged from the pool, I slipped, leaped into the air and fell completely flat on my back -- I’m sore and my posterior hurts! At work everyone seemed irritable (probably just because I was) and things didn’t seem to get done right. It’s being paycheck night was the one bright spot -- by the way, with my remaining checks I’ve decided to pay for my $25 room reservation fee besides my ticket home. Then I’ll feel I’m doing something worth while and useful with my earnings.
MAY 14
Life keeps getting better ‘n’ better, excepting for some things of course, the chiefest among which being a meeting of two representatives from each sorority to which I went with Dr. Pomfret, Miss Wynne Roberts, Charlie Duke and Vernon Nunn all about eating in the dining hall next year and reductions (?) in rent, involving all sorts of amazing involvements. The fur was flying as we got in truly deep discussions. There’ll be another even hotter meeting next Monday evening. All the things that keep happening! Such a nice thing happened at work tonight! A Mr. Curyea, who has been calling New York to his wife quite frequently from Camp Peary asked me my number and when I came back from my relief a lush box of candy was waiting for me with a card which said “In appreciation of the service that I have received in my calls to New York City”. It was one of the sweetest things anyone’s ever done for me. Bugsie comes tomorrow! Life can’t get much nicer!
MAY 15
Such a beautiful life. Bugsie was supposed to come this morning but got lost through connections and finally arrived at 3:00 P.M. on the bus; Gosh! It was super seeing her again! We came back to the house and then walked around campus -- had a screwy time at dinner and afterwards getting dressed for a mass blind date - eight couples. It was super with us walking to the Lodge, Chowning’s, Rexalls #2 and going to the dance in Blow Gym with eight army lieutenants. It was a crazy evening but loads of fun, and I hope Bugsie had a kick out of it. Other lovely events: a cute letter from Jimmy Mooney and a perky one from Bill Boyd signed “All my love”. (slurpy, huh -- I’m so glad!) News that Bill Brennan is stationed at Hamilton College, N.Y. Oh things can’t get better
MAY 16
My poor feet! We crowded so much into this little day! First we went to Bruton for a service made completely memorable by the presence of British Admiral Pound, General Wavell & others. It seems that General Marshall and the other important allied military leaders have conferred in Williamsburg about future campaign tactics. As we prayed in church (all of us) it made me realize how insignificant I am in the powerful drama being enacted now. After church Bugsie and I went to the Lodge for dinner and then went sightseeing at the Capitol and Governor’s Palace, stopping at Lavery’s on the way. We went over to see Dossie and had supper with her in the dining hall. We had a typically crazy evening together in the house - Kay came over and we walked her home. Whee - so much done this weekend.
MAY 17
Still everything keeps on happening! Bugsie and I went downtown and did some marketing before I saw her off on the morning train - it was so swell having her here! This afternoon I attempted to do some studying and ended up by writing letters and indulging in bull sessions - also became a bit dreamy over a card and six page letter from Bill Brennan from Hamilton College announcing that things look awfully good so far as our seeing each other once or twice this summer is concerned. (Lovely thought!) This evening Becky and I went to the sorority representatives meeting for setting the rent problem with the administration. They’ve made concessions but even with having 2 extra girls in the dining room our individual room & board will increase about $25 a semester. Oooh! Touching last sorority meeting of the year.
MAY 18
Ooooh! I’m tired! Punchy and I slept through Philosophy, and I got up for the marketing sort of sleepily. In Economics I hesitantly began to read my report on Agriculture (1940-1942) and Doc Heidingsfield said it was one the best: therefore I love him good. This afternoon I graduated from the 50 yd line in archery and was happy to go in swimming on account of its being so very hot. At work tonight there were too many of us to record so I just sort of sat and was errand girl - terrifically boring - it’ll be sort of good not to work anymore. Mother called tonight to tell me that Daddy’s coming down this weekend - it’ll be swell and I’m awfully glad, but I can’t push off studying for exams much longer!
MAY 19
Today was the day when my conscience finally pushed me to the point of doing some studying - English Lit. - and I really got quite a bit of it accomplished, considering all that I have to do. So much work all at the end of the year (I know: it’s my own fault!) at 3:30 P.M. Beth, Punchy Carolyn and I took time out for trek towards the Wigwam for milkshakes and tin roofs to brighten our dreary outlooks on life. At work tonight I learned Rate and Route and that’s all the news there is about me. Mimi Jardine became engaged to MacGregor (a lieutenant in the navy who seems swell). Gollee - that’s the third in one little week for the KΔ house. Carolyn Harley agreed to take George’s miniature on her five hours off “campus” with him Saturday night, and Marty and Tommy are finally all set too. Such romance!!
MAY 20
No more classes or anything, ceptin’ exams - I still can’t believe it -- Honest! ‘Tis all over but the shouting and I’ve even made up my double gym. Archery, with a tournament, was terrifically hot, and so it was super indeed to go swimming even though we didn't have a regular class. Now I can go on towards being a Junior (depending on my exams natchally!) I got a letter from the New York office of the American Tel and Til Co. telling me to come in, in June to see about a job. At least it’s something definite that I can look into to see what they have to offer instead of wandering around completely aimlessly. Mrs. Dalthud took over the marketing today; and we’re really elated about it. Three cheers! I washed my hair tonight and am comparatively smooth! So much studying to do and so little time to do it in.
MAY 21
So many things have happened again today. I went downtown and then paid my $25 room reservation deposit out of my savings. At ten o’clock the train came in and Daddy got off after a hectic trip. He, Cary and I went to the Lodge and found he’s rooming with a Marine major who is quite a character and has wild parties each night. Poor dad - he came here for a rest too! We had lunch in the dining room and then I read over some philosophy notes, just for the heck of it. More relaxing and then Punchy and I went to work for the last time. Im glad it's over in a way cause it’s getting sort of boring not to be doing anything new, but we’re going to miss the neat gang down there. A senior party back at the house with lush lovely reminiscences, singing, munching on candy bars, punch and lollypops. Such wonderful girls!!!
MAY 22
Day after day, things pile up! I went up to the Lodge and met Daddy for lunch, then coming back to campus for an Economics Review class. Warren Ripley and his mother (down to see him) came over to the house and then they went to the movies with Daddy and me to see “American Empire” one of the corniest Westerns I’ve ever seen. - ‘twas horrible. Beth and Punchy went up to the Lodge to meet us and we had a hysterical evening, including a yummy STEAK dinner, a trek to the major’s room, (meeting him and some of his gang.) and chatting with Chuck Gondak and other interesting people. We laughed and laughed together and really enjoyed ourselves. Marty became officially engaged to Tommy with a lovely ring. Mmmm! Perky letter from Floyd.
MAY 23
Another day at the Lodge! Carolyn Harley and I walked up to Bruton to meet Daddy for church. Reverend Wood, from Toronto, Canada, preached the sermon which was one of  the best I’d ever heard (personification of the Cathedral in Coventry and St. Paul’s in London - most unusual but stirring!) Kay, Lou Holly and Danny came up to the Lodge for dinner and more idle chitchat. Kay, Lou and Holly left soon after dinner to do some studying. but Danny stayed and the three of us relaxed in the sun. We had a bite (a bite, I say?) to eat in the coffee shoppe and then I came back to the house and dove into my English Lit. - my mind’s bleary as it always becomes at this stage of the game (and I haven’t even started to study yet!) Harold called tonight!
MAY 24
All morning I grinded over English Lit till I could scream - I’m so sick of the darned stuff! Daddy came up to the house to meet everyone and then we had a sandwich in the Greek’s. This afternoon we went back to the Lodge and sat around talking. Oh, and yes, I did some more English Lit. Dossie Hostetter came up for dinner and we reminisced some more. All the gals down here are so neat! I said Goodbye to Dad till a week from Thursday, and then came back to the house to cram some more. Such monotony! I received another cute letter from Bill Brennan and mail from mother.
MAY 25
Dad left this morning on the morning train but along that time I was hibernating in Wren with my English Lit. exam. Twas really a corker - most of it was fair, but as always I met my Waterloo on the spot passages. At least the darned thing is over and I’ll never have to think about English Lit. again. (one exam down and four to go: Eureka!!) This afternoon I stopped at Barrett with a birthday present for Holly, went to the Wigwam and eventually settled down to studying Psychology of the interview, rather halfheartedly. My brain can’t stand too much concentrated studying all at once. Gee, I’m living and breathing for a week from now when it’ll be all over. Such fun as it’s been though. A postcard from Harold.
MAY 26
Apologies, Diary, for the monotony of these entries but the fact remains that I’m a study bug and nothing else. My only communion with the outside world was a trek to Casey’s for shampoo with which to wash my hair; and after that I returned to Philosophy and Economics. Such a broadening intellectual viewpoint as I’m developing! Much excitement over Jinx Richardson! Supposedly she spent the night in town with Bill Lugar already married and is being shipped. Rumors are spreading fast and furiously. ‘Tis a shame cause she really is a neat girl inspite of all the confusion in which she’s been involved. Letters from Mother and Bugsie, saying she has to have her wisdom teeth dug out of her jaw. Poor gal! Also packages & empty cartons from Dad.
MAY 27
Another day of pure studying! I’d much rather have exams day after day, than sit and cram Psych., Econ. and Philosophy into my head at the same time and then wait to find out how much I don’t remember. I can picture me writing Psychological answers on my Economics exam! All morning and part of this afternoon I spent over at the Practice House reviewing Econ. (see! I said I was in a rut!) with Danny. It helped to see the various emphasis placed on things. Then this evening inbetween perpetual feasts (from boxes à la Hollis) and a phone call from Mother, Beth, Punchy and I rambled over Psych. I got a card from Bill Boyd - he’s been on maneuvers and is going out again - doesn’t lead to a very satisfactory correspondence; but when the real time comes……
MAY 28
My brain just keeps on getting wearier and wearier. This morning I had my Psych exams, and this afternoon Econ., both of which were entirely different from what I’d expected. Unless Doc Heidingsfield is terrifically lenient - there goes my A! Good and amazing news though: I got a B as my final grade in English Lit. Dr. Crane mustn’t have counted all my mistaken spot passages very much. I love him dearly for it. - for bringing my C up to a B when I hadn’t expected a C definitely. Then too, I learned I’d gotten B on my last Psych exam (taken weeks ago!) So, excepting for what I did on my exams today, scholastically life’s looking up. After supper, Beth, Punchy and I took a longish bike ride and it was such fun! Twas my first actual ride and rather long too. A letter from Colbie and cards from Dad.
MAY 29
All my stiff exams are now over. Three huzzahs! Philosophy this morning was completely fair and one of the nicest exams I’ve taken this period. Now there’s only Spanish left. This afternoon we were fed up with the utter filth of the room (I’m not kidding either.) and so again moved beds, dusted, vacuumed, and rolled the rug in moth balls. Then the trunks were moved in and the room looks like a confused mess of the nth degree. I thought I’d lost my keys of the trunk and called home; Mum is sending down the duplicated and “All’s Well that Ends Well” We packed, sold our books in the Wigwam (only collected $2.55 for three books though!) and revisited the telephone company.
MAY 30
The last day of studying and working a la intellect until September - I can scarce believe it yet!! We didn’t go to church but personally improved ourselves, while I did Spanish and Beth and Punchy finished packing their trunks. Then Janie Beth Punchy and I ran a final hasty comb through our hair and went to the Lodge for claret and dinner. It was smooth and we had a lovely reminiscent time, catting and chatting about people. Gad, how I’m going to miss the super Seniors. I’m not at all anxious for the end of the year to come. It’s all been one continuously mellow feeling full of laughs and a few almost-tears which have made Kappa Delta and all the super gang in the house so near and dear to me!
MAY 31
Such a snap of a Spanish final with translations of sentences like “How are you?” - would that they all had been like that! Anyhoo, it’s over and I’m beautifully and blissfully free. This afternoon I pulled open drawers; dumped things on my bed; and by a process of elimination, packed my trunk. I love to pack, and really enjoyed it. With frequent trips to town for returning extra board money and doing last minute shopping, the afternoon sped by till time for Cary, Janie, Mimi Boone and I to see “The More the Merrier,” a howl of a movie about the Washington housing problem, starring Charles Coburn, Jean Arthur and Joel McCray. Darling. Letters from Daddy, Audrey and Bill Brennan.

Transiting Sun enters Cancer
June 21 - July 22, 2018
Cancer: my need to give and receive emotional warmth and security (Bloch and George, Astrology for Yourself)
Solar transits, according to the experts:
Bernadette Brady: “A reassessment of personal identity.”
Steven Forrest: “The ego itself confronts the world - or vice versa.”
This transit of the Sun through Cancer features strong challenges at the beginning and the end, with blessings in the middle. It’s up to us to look for legitimate areas in need of improvement, as pointed out by the Sun’s light; and to take advantage of water-sign trines from Jupiter and Neptune for healing. As the US (where I live) is a Cancer nation, it’s easy to see the particular flaws this sign is prone to.
The stereotypical American is more comfortable where he is, snugly ensconced in his cozy shell, which he doesn’t want to share - there’s just enough room for him only. Inside this shell it’s easy to sort of self-obliviate himself from the troubles of the rest of the planet. He hoards his good things (and can be an extreme collector), ostensibly for the proverbial “rainy day” - which never seems to come. He’s stuck in a past, which he may or may not view with any clarity or with any critical thinking skills.
We all know Cancers like that - my late BFF was one - and if we ourselves have Cancer placements, we almost certainly “do” those types of behaviors when that placement feels threatened. So many of the challenging aspects over the next 30 days, unless we make an effort, will reinforce those less desirable traits.
The Cancerian isn’t usually going to seek out trouble, but when it lands on his doorstep he won’t turn away from it. Even if all he does is listen to the troubled person (Cancerians being the best listeners), he’s performing a kindness. He’s also capable of much more than that, when his prodigious sympathies are fully roused. His generosity is limitless. His notions of right/wrong are on the uncomplicated side, and at most he’ll mutter, “It was the right thing to do.”
Celebrities with Sun in Cancer:
Ringo Starr, 14th Dalai Lama, Julius Caesar, Richard Branson, Franz Kafka, Natalie Wood, Malala Yousafzai, Henry VIII of England, George Sand, John D. Rockefeller, Debbie Harry, Cyndi Lauper, Marcel Proust, Ian Curtis, Antoine de Saint-Exupery, Cat Stevens, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, June Carter Cash, Ricky Gervais, Diana Rigg, Helen Keller, George Orwell, Hermann Hesse, Carlos Santana
Friday, June 22, Uranus/Taurus sextile Sun/Cancer, 1:44
Off to a decent start, anyway. We’re learning about our connections to Mother Earth, and even if it’s “the hard way” we can still see opportunities for improvement. Use Cancer’s affection for the past, to find yourself more earth-friendly practices for your home. The Scorpio Moon impels us forward with sustainability.
Planets/Points affected lie between 0:44 and 2:44 of the yin signs Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces.
Saturday, June 23, Chiron/Aries square Sun/Cancer, 2:21
The Scorpio Moon is a factor here, too, except as an irritant for this aspect. It’s sesquare both the Sun and Chiron, and in fact this is an integral part of the Gibbous Moon chart. In a nutshell, we have some healing adjustments to make. Our tendency will be to bury the hurts deeply, but that’s only a temporary solution. A little courage is called for, here.
Planets/points affected lie between 1:21 and 3:21 of the cardinal signs Aries*, Cancer*, Libra*, and Capricorn*; and between 16:21 and 18:21 of the fixed signs Taurus*, Leo*, Scorpio*, and Aquarius.
Wednesday, June 27, Saturn Rx/Capricorn opposite Sun/Cancer, 5:51
This opposition could bring some pretty gloomy people into our lives. Saturn’s pessimism influences the Cancer Sun to retreat into its shell and lock the door tight. We are not facing reality clearly, and the overactive Cancer imagination amplifies everything to seem worse than it really is. And again, the Moon (in its fall in Capricorn) illumines the issues. Lighten up!
Planets/points affected lie between 4:51 and 6:51 of the cardinal signs Aries*, Cancer*, Libra*, and Capricorn*; and between 19:51 and 21:51 of the fixed signs Taurus*, Leo*, Scorpio*, and Aquarius.
Thursday, July 5, Jupiter Rx/Scorpio trine Sun/Cancer, 13:23
This is a waning trine, which is associate with Sagittarius and the 9th House - in other words, it has a double Jupiter influence. It “urges us to benevolently share our blessings with others,” and can be “a source of personal uplift and inspiration.” (Dynamics of Aspect Analysis, Bil Tierney) It can also make us inordinately lazy, so don’t waste these grateful vibes!
Planets/Points affected lie between 12:23 and 14:23 of the yin signs Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces.
Sunday, July 8, Neptune Rx/Pisces trine Sun/Cancer, 16:23
And this is a waxing trine, associated with Leo and the 5th House - for a double solar influence. Bil said, “It is an aspect of whole-hearted and vibrant expression,” makes us feel both lucky and impatient of restraint, and “best energizes itself when there are elements of recreational activity present.” It also can make us lazy and dissolute. A Taurus Moon is a bit of an intermediary between the two, and helps us ground/center ourselves in this ethereal love.
Planets/Points affected lie between 15:23 and 17:23 of the yin signs Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces.
Thursday, July 12, Pluto Rx/Capricorn opposite Sun/Cancer, 20:01
No matter how safe and secure we think we are, the world can’t be kept away forever. (See: Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Masque of the Red Death.”) That this happens on the day of a solar eclipse will no doubt drive that point home very emphatically. We need to remember how much even the tiniest action has a huge effect on the entire Universe - and then we need to break free of our comfort zones and damned well go out and do it.
Planets/Points affected lie between 19:01 and 21:01 of the cardinal signs Aries*, Cancer*, Libra*, and Capricorn*; and between 4:01 and 6:01 of the mutable signs Gemini*, Virgo*, Sagittarius*, and Pisces*.
Monday, July 16, Eris/Aries square Sun/Cancer, 24:05
The instinctual way to handle this one would be to turn our homes into fortresses to keep out those pesky unwanted “Others.” A better way might be to find ways to live our lives which are both practical and efficient, and cognizant of the fact that we are not isolated little entities.
Planets/Points affected lie between 23:05 and 25:05 of the cardinal signs Aries*, Cancer*, Libra*, and Capricorn*; and between 8:05 and 10:05 of the mutable signs Gemini*, Virgo*, Sagittarius*, and Pisces*.

Hair Hues of Radiata Stories
Here is the complete list of all the Radiata Stories characters (both recruitable and NPCs) taken from Fuck Yeah Radiata Stories and sorted by hair colour. There are a couple things I want to add.
First off, while most of the characters fit neatly into one of the eight categories, there are some characters whose hair colour was more ambiguous (i.e. dark blonde vs. light brown hair). I placed them where I thought they were best fit.
Black and blue are the same category because some of the black-haired characters like Cairn have a bluish tint and technically speaking, black pigment is really just a dark blue anyway.
There are some characters who are either bald or have their head covered so you can’t tell the colour of their head hair. Instead of classifying them as bald or unknown, I classified them based on the colour of their facial hair and eyebrows. This is why Dynas is in with the brunettes instead of the baldies.
While I could have made a separate category for pink hair, I ultimately decided it should just belong with red/orange because pink is just light red anyway.
Overall, there is a wide, diverse spectrum of hair colours and not all characters fit perfectly into their respective category. So if you think certain characters are miscategorised, well that’s your opinion and you’re entitled to it.
Long post under the cut.

Rudy Giuliani mansplains ‘witch hunts’ to witches
Rudy Giuliani, a lawyer for President Donald Trump and former New York City mayor, does not seem to understand why witches are offended by his use of the term “witch hunt” to describe Special Counsel Robert Mueller‘s probe.
Giuliani made the remarks in a tweet on Wednesday night and appears to be referencing a segment aired by CNN over the holidays, according to Mediaite.
During the segment, several witches spoke with the news outlet, and the author of Witch Craft Activism said the president using the term was “really disgraceful.” The segment said many witches tend to lean toward liberal ideologies.
Apparently, Giuliani didn’t see much of a problem with Trump using the term.
“According to CNN witches favor Democrats and they are offended that the Meuller investigation is described as a Witch Hunt,” he tweeted, misspelling “Mueller.” “There is no reason for the witches to be offended because Witch Hunt derives from, for example, the Salem Witch Hunts where people were executed unjustly.”

The Salem Witch Trials were also referenced in the CNN segment. Last month the Daily Beast reported that many in the witch community were upset with the president’s use of the term “witch hunt.”
The president’s lawyers tweet defending the term caught some flak online.

You see, back in those days, rich men would ride around in Zeppelins, dropping coins on people, and one day I seen JD Rockefeller flying by. So I run of the house with a big washtub. I'd just used it that morning to wash my turkey, which in those days was known as a walking-bird. https://t.co/JQnziKlv5s

Giuliani’s tweet didn’t have any mistaken links in them at least—several of which have been added to his tweets in recent weeks.

Lucy and the Countess Have a Horse Guest
S4;E6 ~ October 25, 1965
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Synopsis
The Countess turns up on Lucy's doorstep with the only thing her late husband left her: a race horse. When she can't pay the stable fees, Lucy lets the horse stay on her patio. They hope it will race again one day, until it is discovered that the horse is pregnant.
Regular Cast
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball (Lucy Carmichael), Gale Gordon (Theodore J. Mooney)
Mary Jane Croft (Mary Jane Lewis) does not appear in this episode.
Guest Cast
Tumblr media
Ann Sothern (Rosie Hannigan, the Countess Framboise) makes the first of her three season four appearances at the Countess. Sothern had appeared in the first “Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” “Lucy Takes a Cruise to Havana” (1957) as Susie MacNamara, the same character she played on her show “Private Secretary” from 1953 to 1957. In return, Lucille Ball played Lucy Ricardo on her show in 1959. Sothern appeared with Ball in five films between 1933 and 1943. She was nominated for an Oscar for her final screen appearance in The Whales of August in 1987. She is buried near her home in Sun Valley, Idaho, a place also dear to Lucy and Desi.
Tumblr media
Herb Vigran (Veterinarian) played Jule, Ricky Ricardo’s music agent on two episodes of “I Love Lucy” in addition to playing movie publicist Hal Sparks in “Lucy is Envious” (ILL S3;23). He was seen in the Lucy-Desi film The Long, Long Trailer. He played the role of the baseball umpire (an eye doctor) in two previous episodes. He went on to play other characters in two more episodes.
The Veterinarian says he's been a horse doctor for 22 years. He never gives his name.
Tumblr media
Bill Quinn (Mr. Morton, stable owner) is probably best remembered as Mr. Van Rensalear on “All in the Family” and “Archie Bunker's Place.” This is his only appearance with Lucille Ball.
The character introduces himself as Mr. Morton, although the final credits list him as Mr. Frink. Morton is, of course, Lucille Ball's name by marriage to Gary Morton, the show's production consultant and warm-up act.
Tumblr media
Sid Gould (Porter #1) made more than 45 appearances on “The Lucy Show,” all as background characters. He also did 40 episodes of “Here’s Lucy.” Gould (born Sydney Greenfader) was Lucille Ball’s cousin by marriage to Gary Morton. Gould was married to Vanda Barra, who also appeared on “The Lucy Show” starting in 1967, as well as on “Here’s Lucy.”
Bennett Green (Porter #2, uncredited) was Desi Arnaz’s stand-in during “I Love Lucy.” He does frequent background work on “The Lucy Show.”
He does not have any dialogue.
Tumblr media
William Frawley (Horse Trainer) was already a Hollywood veteran when he was hired by Desi Arnaz to play Fred Mertz on “I Love Lucy.”  After the series concluded he joined the cast of “My Three Sons” playing Bub Casey. This was his final appearance before his death in March 1966.
William Frawley gets his own full screen end credit, listed as "And our own Bill Frawley as The Trainer."
Tumblr media
There are two live horses (Oil Well and May) and two foals (Lucy and Rosie) used on screen.
An uncredited and unidentified background actor leads Oil Well into the stable.
Tumblr media
This episode was written by Garry Marshall and Jerry Belson and directed by Maury Thompson.
Tumblr media
The original telecast included commercials for Wisk laundry detergent, Lux dish washing soap, Dippity-Do hair gel, and White Rain hair spray. There was also a promo spot for "The Ed Sullivan Show"
Tumblr media
This episode was filmed September 16, 1965. That was a big night for CBS, with the very first episode of “My Three Sons” after moving from ABC titled “The First Marriage”. It was also the first episode of the series broadcast in color, something “The Lucy Show” did three days earlier with “Lucy at Marineland” (S4;E1).
Tumblr media
Although William Frawley had left “My Three Sons” due to declining health, two of the “sons” had been seen on “The Lucy Show”. Don Grady (Robbie Douglas) had played Chris Carmichael’s friend Bill and Barry Livingston (Ernie Douglas) had played Mr. Mooney’s son Arnold. Barbara Perry was also in the “Three Sons” cast that night. Perry would do two episodes of “The Lucy Show” in 1966. Fred MacMurray teamed with Lucille Ball on “Lucy Hunts Uranium” (LDCH S1;E3) James V. Kern was the “Sons” director, a position he also held on “I Love Lucy.” “My Three Sons” was filmed at Desilu Studios.
Tumblr media
“Gilligan’s Island” also had marriage theme the night of September 16, 1965. That episode featured “The Lucy Show” actors Mary Foran and Alan Hale Jr.  Natalie Schafer (Mrs. Howell) had played Phoebe Emerson in “The Charm School” (ILL S3;E15).
Lucille Ball has restyled her hair for this episode.
Ann Sothern, Gale Gordon, and Herb Vigran all receive entrance applause from the studio audience.
Tumblr media
Rosie once again arrives at Lucy's home with lots of luggage, although not nearly as much as when she first arrived in Danfield (above). Once again, Sid Gould is one of the men delivering it and being tipped.
Tumblr media
Lucy tells Rosie that so far in Hollywood she has met:
Lassie's Hairdresser ~ Canine star Lassie was mentioned on “I Love Lucy” in “The Young Fans” (ILL S1;E20), among others.
The Man who used to dry off Lloyd Bridges ~ Actor Lloyd Bridges was the star of “Sea Hunt” (1958-1961), a TV series about a scuba diver which featured extensive underwater filming. It was previously mentioned in “Lucy and Viv Put in a Shower” (S1;E18) and “Lucy Buys a Boat” (S1;E30). Bridges played a doctor on the season five opener of “Here’s Lucy” in 1972.
Liberace's Dentist ~ Flamboyant pianist Liberace (well known for his continual smile), was mentioned on “I Love Lucy” in “The Diner” (ILL S3;E27). He will guest star on a 1970 episode of “Here's Lucy” playing himself.
Tumblr media
When Rosie says that her late husband left her Oil Well, Lucy says that she'll be in with the Rockefellers and the Vanderbilts. Rosie says she'll be in with the Longdens and the Arcaros because Oil Well is a racehorse. The former are two of the wealthiest families in America, although it was Rockefeller who made his fortune in oil as owner of Standard Oil. Eddie Arcaro (1916-97) held the record for winning more American classic races than anyone else. Johnny Longden (1907-2003, above) was one of the most successful jockeys of all time. By the end of his 40 year career he had racked up 6,032 victories. He played himself on “I Love Lucy” in “The Loving Cup” (ILL S6;E12).
Tumblr media
Rosie formally asks the Horse Trainer (William Frawley) to announce her as the Countess Henri Gaston Armand Jean-Louis Philippe Framboise Le Cul-de-Sac. The Trainer grimaces (in Frawley's inimitable way) and then shouts “Some dame is here to see you!”  After William Frawley's brief cameo as the horse trainer, Lucy says “You know he reminds me of someone I used to know.”  This is an obvious reference to his nine year history of playing Fred Mertz opposite Lucille Ball.
Tumblr media
This was William Frawley's final appearance on television. He died of a heart attack at the Knickerbocker Hotel, a few months after shooting this show. Desi Arnaz was grief-stricken with the loss of his friend and took out a full-page ad in the trade papers, consisting of Frawley's picture, framed in black, and three words: "Buenas noches, amigo!" Lucy had wanted Frawley to appear on “The Lucy Show” earlier, but because he and Vivian Vance did not get along, Lucy had to wait until Viv was no longer a regular.
Tumblr media
Oil Well's board and feed bill comes to $937.14. Adjusting for inflation, that would be more than $7,200 today. Lucy spent $86 for oats, which she tells Mr. Mooney is for baking cookies.
Tumblr media
Rosie says that Oil Well may be old enough to be the first horse to collect Medicare. Congress enacted Medicare to provide health insurance to people age 65 and older, regardless of income or medical history. President Johnson signed the bill into law on July 30, 1965, just two weeks after this episode was filmed so this was an subject very much in the news in 1965.
Tumblr media
MR. MOONEY: “Mrs. Carmichael!  We will talk about it right here, if you don’t mind!” LUCY: “Of horse! Of course, of course!”
When Lucy is trying to hide the fact that she’s keeping a horse in her apartment, she inadvertently (perhaps deliberately by the writers) quotes the lyrics to the sitcom “Mr. Ed” the most famous horse on television!
“A horse is a horse, of course, of course And no one can talk to a horse, of course. That is, of course, unless the horse Is the famous Mister Ed!”
The show aired on CBS from 1958 to 1966. The night before this episode of “The Lucy Show” first aired, “Mr. Ed” featured actor George N. Neise, who had played Mr. Carter (no relation) in “Lucy Becomes A Father” (S3;E9) a year earlier. In 1966, Bill Quinn (Mr. Morton in “Lucy and the Countess Have a Horse Guest”) appeared on “Mr. Ed.”  Jimmy Garrett, who played Jerry Carmichael, had done an episode in 1962. On a 1970 episode of “Here’s Lucy,” guest star Carol Burnett also mentions Mr. Ed.
Tumblr media
Lucy's checking account is known around the bank as ‘Mooney's Millstone.’ In this case, Mr. Mooney is referring to the Biblical proverb about “a millstone around one’s neck”, which means to put some burden on a person’s life or punishment that makes escape impossible. It also means to force somebody takes up some responsibility or a job that they are trying to avoid.
When the Countess sees Mr. Mooney, she addresses him by his real name, instead of “Mr. Money,” which was a running gag back in Danfield.
Tumblr media
There are two references to sending Oil Well to the “Glue Factory.” This has become a euphemism for euthanizing a horse (or any animal) but it is based in fact. Early adhesives were made from a process that incorporated animal bones and hides. The animal were generally horses (due to its shear size), but other animals were also used.
Tumblr media
The Veterinarian's diagnosis of Oil Well is that “She's pregnant!” When Lucy Ricardo was expecting a child in 1952, the network forbade the word “pregnant” from being mentioned on air.  Times have changed.
Tumblr media
When hearing that Oil Well is expecting, Lucy prepares the horse a lunch of dill pickles, strawberries, hot sauce, cod liver oil, and sardines. Lucy and Rosie assume that horses have the same pre-natal cravings that some women experience.
Lucy gets an irate phone call from Mrs. Goldaper, the woman who lives downstairs from her, about Oil Wells clomping about. Goldaper was Lucy's husband Gary Morton's birth name, so technically Lucille Ball is also a “Mrs. Goldaper.”
Tumblr media
As Oil Well is giving birth, Mr. Mooney sings “Sonny Boy” hoping it is a boy. "Sonny Boy" was written by Ray Henderson, Bud De Sylva, and Lew Brown and was featured in the 1928 talkie The Singing Fool sung by Al Jolson. It is ironic that a Jolson song should be sung in the same episode that features William Frawley, who had a long-standing and sometimes bitter rivalry with the performer.
Lucy reminds Rosie that she has given birth and is a mother (without mentioning their names). Rosie says her sister has also given birth, making her an aunt.
Tumblr media
Oil Well has births two foals, which Rosie and Lucy name... Rosie and Lucy!
Callbacks & Fast Forward!
Tumblr media
In “Lucy Wins a Racehorse,” a 1958 episode of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour,” Lucy also kept a live race horse (named Whirling Jet) in the house.
Tumblr media
Lucy Carmichael says she bought a special chair for Oil Well to sit in and rest, although the horse never actually sits on it on camera. It is possible that the producers were hoping to recreate the gag of the horse sitting an an armchair that was featured in “Lucy Wins a Racehorse,” but that Oil Well refused to cooperate. There seems little other reason for the chair and the dialogue. Also, there is a hard edit in the film as the telephone rings. Saved by the bell!
Tumblr media
Lucy jokingly tells Oil Well to chew his food 30 times before swallowing. When Lucy Ricardo is trying to delay getting to the theatre in “Lucy’s Night In Town” (ILL S6;E22) she tells Ricky that “ Everyone should chew their food 25 times before swallowing, just like the animals do.”
Tumblr media
While mixing Oil Well's food, Lucy says that when she was pregnant she always wanted ice cream with sardines. On “I Love Lucy,” Lucy Ricardo also craved ice cream and sardines, even sending Ricky out in the middle of the night to get it for her.
Tumblr media
She also mixes in some dill pickles, which was another craving that Lucy Carter said she had when she ‘faked’ her pregnancy in “Lucy the Part-Time Wife” (HL S3;E14).
Tumblr media
When Oil Well goes into labor, pandemonium ensues just as it did when “Lucy Goes to the Hospital” (ILL S2;E16). “Call the cab!” “I’ll call the cab!”
Tumblr media
In the panic, Mr. Mooney says “I’d better go out and by Dr. Spock’s baby book.”  Benjamin McLane Spock (1903-98) was a pediatrician whose 1946 book Dr. Spock’s Baby and Child Care is one of the best-sellers of all time. It was first mention on “I Love Lucy” in “Nursery School” (S5;E9) and again in “Little Ricky’s School Pageant” (S6;E10). Ricky often mispronounced his name as “Dr. Spook”!  Convincing their sons to deliver a cake for them, Viv calls Lucy Carmichael “The Dr. Spock of Danfield” in a 1964 episode of “The Lucy Show.”
Tumblr media
Live horses were also featured on “The Lucy Show” in “Lucy Visits the White House” (S1;E25), “Kiddie Parties Inc.” (S2;E2), “Lucy and Arthur Godfrey” (S3;E23), “Lucy Discovers Wayne Newton” (S4;E14), and “Lucy and Robert Goulet” (S6;E8).
Blooper Alerts!
Tumblr media
Luggage Jenga! When Porter #2 walks toward Rosie to be tipped, the baggage he has stacked topples over with a loud thud. He turns around to see what has made the noise, but does not go back to fix it and the scene goes on as if nothing has happened.
Tumblr media
Shut The Door! As usual on “The Lucy Show,” when Mr. Mooney enters Lucy's home he leaves the front door open.
What’s My Line! Lucille Ball jumps Ann Sothern's line when she's in the kitchen talking about her tin mine in the Alps.
Tumblr media
Sitcom Logic Alert!  When Rosie arrives at 4am, Lucy is wearing pajamas, a robe, with her hair in curlers, but still has on very thick eyelashes!
Second Story Horse! It has previously been established and confirmed again here that Lucy lives on the second floor, making the idea of Oil Well getting up the stairs and living on her patio quite unlikely!
Tumblr media
My Three Sons! When Oil Well is about to give birth, Mr. Mooney says “I hope it's a boy. I've always wanted a boy.” He forgets that he has three sons of his own: Ted Jr., Bob, and Arnold. Which brings our story full circle!
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Countess Have a Horse Guest” rates 4 Paper Hearts out of 5
