The character designs and ideas are really stepping it up IMO, every episode seems to get better! That was really sweet! And no boring parts! I’m really loving it (I’m so high on dopamine rn that I forgot what happened hahah, so I can’t really elaborately. Honestly, this was the first time while watching this anime where that happened to me. Which… actually is a good sign! Because I usually get this for EVERY r&m main series episode I watch for the first time hahahaXDD it’s that good)

It’s a huge shame that many people seem to really hate this show for some reason. I will never apologize for liking something and you shouldn’t either! Keep loving what you love everybody

some of my mutuals on here inspired me to get off my ass and actually watch the anime soooo heres my lil opinion on the thang

tldr: its meh but i'm holding out hope for the next eps, also apparently controversial(??) but i like the art style

i came into it knowing that the anime heavily leans on like. the weirder sci-fi concepts that the rnm multiverse allows. i mean. just look at Rick and Morty vs. Genocider but like. its an interesting concept sure but the execution is not the best-- it really worked better in its occasional shorts/special format it had before

its attempt to be a little more serious than the original show is meh-- the unconnected plotlines shit is something rnm has done before (roy game. interdimensional cable. mrotys mindblowers. blah blah) but it had yk. comedy to fall back on-- without that aspect it just feels very uhhh. nothing burger-y

but i only find this episode semi-acceptable just cause. its only the first episode. i'm assuming they're just trying to lay down everything now and they'll smooth everything out in the next episodes....hopefully

though it honestly feels like the writers are doing this towards the community/fans HELPPPP

also. why must we give morty a love interest yet again. can a boy exist without a random love interest being there. i don't know i'm okay with the potential of new characters coming in (shout out to frank. random ass guy) but i hate when mort just gets a random love interest SDKJFH hopefully they expand on her a little more as a character-- i thought she would just be a one off thing but then i remembered she's literally in the opening so. whoopsie!

ok but. for positives. i like the art style-- which i am shocked to learn is. not recieved the same?? the animation is choppy yeah but from what i remember the anime's always sort of been like that and i very much enjoy the funky color palettes n shit the anime's been doing.. yummy as fuck

also i'm glad they have the same/(or similar i didnt check) japanese vas for the anime-- question though for those who're reading this. is there an english dub???? from where i watched (argh me matey) there was only a japanese dub but i'm pretty sure some trailers had english vas so. idk

anyways yeah those're my thoughts

Some thoughts on Rick and Morty: The Anime

Spoilers ahead

Instead of doing a review for every episode I’m going to give some thoughts on the first episode and then do a final review at the end when the whole series has wrapped.

Voice Acting

I’m still baffled that they didn’t use the original voice actors for the English language dub. Maybe there were scheduling conflicts or they wanted more of a separation between the American version. Regardless, the actors do a fine job of being faithful to the characters. I really love Rick’s Japanese voice actor (Yōhei Tadano) who captures Rick’s personality and yet makes seem like the 70 year old man he’s actually suppose to be.

Morty and the VR Bisexual Sandwich

The majority of the episode revolves around Morty’s adventure in a VR game created by Rick to keep Morty distracted while Rick and Summer are doing more important things. We are introduced to our first original characters, Elle and Frank. Elle has appeared in several of the previews and has been set up as the main love interest. In fact, it’s implied that have a history even before he first meets her in the VR game. Frank, on the other hand, we haven’t seen before and we don’t yet what their relationship will look like at this point, but there are some romantic undertones. Throughout the game (which seems similar to Roy from Mortynight Run) we see Morty or Morties live a life that parodies Citizen Cane, has a romantic dinner with Elle, share a warm embrace with Frank, and is gifted a Nander Dragon’s Tear/Sweat from his partners. It is implied, however, that the VR game may not purely be a simulation due to the introduction of…

Long-Haired Rick and Troubles in Interdimensional Paradise

During the simulation, Morty meets a version of Rick we’ll just call Long-Haired Rick who informs him that the lines between dimension are becoming blurred and flowing into each other hence the reason this Rick is able to interact with a Morty even though his Morty has long since died. It’s rather nice to see a Rick who openly mourns his lost Morty and is a nice departure from the cynicism of the original show. Of course, the reason LHR and Morty are speaking with one another is the same reason our Rick is stuck in limbo with a nonfunctional portal gun and entropy bomb/not bomb with nothing but Summer to help guide him home. The dimension are bleeding into one another setting up the main conflict (possibly) of the series moving forward.

Final thoughts

I will say it did take a few watchthroughs to understand what was going on in the story because there is a lot of jumping around to different dimensions that can be easily missed if you’re not focused. This is not going be a show you can have on in the background while scrolling on your phone, so if you plan on watching this series expect to take your time with it. From what I’ve seen, I’m intrigued enough to keep watching to see how the story unfolds. I want to see how Morty’s relationship develops with Elle and Frank and what is LHR all about? I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

Non-spoiler thoughts after watching the first episode of Rick and Morty: The Anime:

I am feeling equal parts:

1. That was so much fun & I can't wait for the next episode (and to watch the sub on Saturday)!

2. Ohhh, this show is going to make me fucking sob at some point, isn't it?

I've been rewatching Rick and Morty on the adult swim app. Having been removed from the Szechuan Sauce Incident by 7 years and the show no longer having a strangle hold it seemingly once had on adult media, I feel okay with saying: I really like Rick and Morty.

The writing is really fucking good and creative and lends itself well to being playfully overanalyzed and nitpicked in the same way that adult fans talk about Gravity Falls.

Fresh example because I just watched the episode: They did a Captain Planet parody where the only difference between the original Planeteers and the parody characters is that there was no Element of Heart. The "useless" guy was the only component missing. And what happened to the kids that summoned Plaetina in their adulthood? They turned her into a national mascot that got paid by lobbyists and politicians. And the "kids" eventually tried to sell her to a foreign prince as a final "get rich" move.

And I genuinely believe that's BECAUSE Heart was absent. That the writers tried to tell a story with the 5th Paneteer, with some kind of "Love" or "Hope" ring but they COULDN'T. The exclusion wasn't because "heart is useless" the exclusion was to show that Heart was truly important.

Canon birthdayyyyys! At least kind of, since I'm not sure how canon we're considering info from the anime (which, btw I am thoroughly enjoying & need to make some posts about).

I've seen November 11th listed as Rick's birthday... somewhere before, so I'm going with at least that one being accurate.

Which makes Rick's birthday the day before the original airdate of Unmortricken, and my brain is feeling very Not Normal about that.

The Rick and Morty anime gives us Morty's birthday (Sept 19th) and blood type (A-).

This makes Morty a Virgo.

Rick (not the same Rick Morty travels with, but an alternate version) is listed as having the birthday Nov 11th (Scorpio) and AB+ blood type.

I’ve really enjoyed the last 2 episodes (3 and 4) of Rick and Morty: The Anime! When ep 3 dropped, something about the plot finally clicked. I really am even more into it now! These were both so great!

I find it super silly how many references this show makes to parts of the original, though it’s starting to become a lot now lol. I get paying “homage” and everything and I totally would be geeking out myself if I was asked to create my own spin-off universe series!

I really love all the situations the Ricks have gotten into, and Morty going off on his own seems really interesting! HE AS A SCI-FI FINGER LIKE HIS GRAMPA?!!!!!!!!!! 🥹🥹🥹 BUT OMG OH NO, JERRY! WTF XXDD

I really love “Ri-san” from the glimpse we got of his life (well, I mean the one it must’ve been before Rick collided with it) and dimension, and I so badly now want to draw him. Like, before our Rick’s reality merged with his… To explore his life before Rick discovered it. It seems so mundane and sort of sad, it reminds me of aspects of my Rick(s)!

(I’m so glad the Pocket Mortys ad at the end put a name to this version of himself XD He was super cute, and is it just me or did he look a little chubbier than regular Rick? lol I really appreciate the pear-shapedness of some of these character designs they’re so good XDD)

It was so interesting how Rick kept accepting his position. He was ready to just life in Ri-San’s dimension and die of old age, and was even happier to die of execution as long as his family was present for his death. I wonder why Elle showed him these realities/timelines/possible alternate reality outcomes??

This shit rocks, man. I’m having so much fun 😄 I love dming with mutuals about this show to talk about all the new details we find each week <:DDD💙 It’s been really fun! Love you all!
