Richard Westall (1765-1836) "Nelson and the Bear" (1809) Oil on panel Located in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London
The painting depicts an incident in 1773 involving Horatio Nelson, then a fifteen-year-old midshipman accompanying a polar expedition to try and find the Northwest Passage. Nelson and a friend were attacked by a polar bear, Nelson's musket misfired and he reversed it to try and beat the bear off with the butt end. His life was likely saved when the ice split in two separating him from the animal. In the background is the bomb vessel HMS Carcass on which Nelson was a crew member. One of the ship's guns is seen firing in an attempt to scare off the bear. It omits the presence of Nelson's comrade, showing him confidently standing up to the bear alone.

In his 45 B.C. book “Tusculan Disputations”, Cicero rewrites and therefore popularizes an ancient moral parable. In the roman philosopher’s version, the tyrannical king Dionysius II showed his subjects the looming danger of ruling over a city, by hanging a razor-sharp sword over Damocles’ head. Suspended only by a single strand of horsehair, it represented how death is always breathing down the neck of the ones in a position of power.
Today, to have The Damocles Sword over one's head is an idiom used to describe any situation threatening imminent harm or disaster.
Detail from Richard Westall, The Sword of Damocles, 1812, oil on canvas, 130 × 103 × 8.3 cm, Ackland Art Museum, own photograph of painting, Ackland Museum, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States of America

The Reconciliation of Helen and Paris after his Defeat by Menelaus
Artist: Richard Westall (English, 1765–1836)
Date: Exhibited 1805
Medium: Oil paint on wood
Collection: TATE Britain
Description
This painting is inspired by Greek legend: Helen was married to Menelaus, king of Sparta. Her affair with the Trojan prince, Paris, led to the Trojan War.
Richard Westall painted this scene for Thomas Hope, a wealthy collector. His London home had rooms designed and furnished in the different styles of the ancient world – Egypt, India, Greece and Rome. Westall modelled the figure of Helen on a Greek statue in Hope’s collection.
In the 1790s Westall’s Royal Academy exhibits were the talk of the town. His flashy paint effects divided opinion, however, and many thought his work was too stylised and unnatural.

Hades Carrying Eros to the Underworld
Inspired by a painting of the same name. (Richard Westall) When i seen the original i felt the concept had… a lot of potential. I’ll leave it to you to search it up, it’s much different than what I’ve imagined. ^^ Prints are available in my shop! In this colour (terracotta) and rose.
