okay bluecollar!rafe but yall. can we make it MARINE!RAFE?? or more specifically MARSOC!rafe* who works for ward at cameron construction co. on leave?? like hello i need him bad guys.
cw: MDNI smut, cursing, stuff in public, food play, cum eating, military stuff, ass play, manhandling, 1 mention of fighting, recording
*marsoc: Marine Forces Special Operations Command - basically what COD men do
like he starts off as a standard private officer after enlisting when you guys graduate high school. he works his way up from private to corporal to sergeant major, and then eventually to captain, colonel, then general. i mean hes fucking unstoppable, hes blowing thru these ranks like nobodys fuckin business, and he not stopping anytime soon baby he in his primeeee.
he moves on to MARSOC and leads a small team on SPEC-OP missions in like borneo. hes literally the best of the best. his full file is like 4 pounds, full of successful recon missions, confirmed kills, successful captures of enemy targets, accurate tracking efforts, successful counterterrorism efforts, successful hostage rescue and successful direct action raids. when theres a REAL threat? they call LT Cameron. callsign? RAIDER
NOW. when baby comes home on leave he works at the family construction company ward owns, building giant beach houses for rich kooks. he eventually inherits cameron construction when ward gets too old to work and he helps ward retire bcs of the cash from being the most elite soldier in the US military. bae is tannnn bcs of construction work ofc, but also since being in the military he likes to go on runs and be in nature to clear his head. and yall alr know hes yatteddddd, both sleeves done by his boy at home on the cut, who happens to be a very talented tattoo artist (barry...)
strictly keeps a buzz for deployment but will grow out a mullet when hes home. signature gold chain is always on, and has a tat on his ring finger for you and maybe one on his forearm. does he have both ears pierced with fake diamond studs in? yes.
is currently in the blueprint stage for a beach house he wants to build you on figure 8 (and one in florida... and will probably start planning another one if he ends up having a long ship-out next deployment) even tho he despises rich fucks and is suchhhh a country boy. i mean hes like pogue!rafe but hes more of a mudding, dirt biking, bonfire, shotgunning beer, lifted truck, bar hop, football game kind of guy. and the most elite soldier in the US military ofc.
takes you on stargazing dates and fucks you in the truck bed, a big beach towel set down and his head in your neck while he ruts into you short and fast. occasionally gets into bar fights when some dick is tryna say sum to u. is such an ass man and will smack and grope that shit wheneverrrr whereverrrr - has zoned out of convos with people while feelin HIS booty up + loves to grip your pussy with his big ass paw when no one is looking.
has a super firm grip due to years of being a marine and WILL manhandle ur ass around - into various positions, onto the bed or couch or counter or etc., up over his shoulder when you gettin on his nerves. gets actually animalistic when yall fuckin, and yk that boy a munch. growls and grunts sooo loud the whole time.
will take you to the dock and fuck you on the family fishing boat. will christen any new bar yall go to by fucking you in the gross bathroom and carving both your initials in the wall with his pocket knife that ward gave him when he was 15. is kinky af but lets u bring it up bcs he feels awkward talking about it. is sooooo nasty - will eat his cum out of you with his whole mouth, eyes locked on yours, sucking your lips into his mouth. then, when it’s not enough, he drags you up to sit on his face and rubs your clit, watching you clench and letting his cum drip from you right onto his tongue.
will stick a thumb in your ass during doggy, while reaching for his phone bcs the way u throwin that ass back on him? yall bout to make another movie. loves watching you clean him up after round 5, when his dick is covered in his and your cum - will not let you miss a spot, even where it dripped down over his hefty balls to his ass. and he rarely shaves - uncut.
if it’s a hot day, he’ll turn the ac off and find you so he can lick the sweat off every crevice of your beautiful body while he’s fucking you over the counter. both of you completely butt naked bcs it’s hot. has a sweet tooth - will interrupt you while you’re baking and strip you, laying you on the counter like the dessert you are and eating the frosting off his favorite parts. get especially excited when it comes to sweets on your nipples.
honestly if that aint a FEASTTTT i dont know what issss

Just got out of artblock so easy on the judgement, please! Ok!! So I'm late to this, but I saw some art of "Southern Tord" and it violently ripped me out of artblock! SO GOOD!! AHAHAHAH!! Dude, Tord would fit in PERFECTLY with Southern culture. So here are my headcanons. I'm new to this AU, so this is my own spin on things! (This is set in the early 2000s, they're teens, and meet each other at Penn state university!)
-
Edd: An Ohio boy. Drawing is his escapism! There's not much else to do in Ohio so he has a lot of time for animation and world-building.
Tom: Born in Arizona, raised in Florida. A CLASSIC Punk ass. Graffiti, trespassing, skating, the works! He gives his skater friends stick n' pokes and piercings....they're not great! Dreams of the California Punk Ska scene.
Tord: Louisiana born and raised! Absolutely feral redneck. Masters degree in ducktape repairs, rustbucket mechanic, dynamite fisher, and hobby taxidermist! He has a camo hat with a fishhook in the brim. Feral.
Matt: Maryland boy. A rich boy. Same ole' himbo Matt! Probably scouted for modeling gigs AND/OR famous on Vine for being uncanny. Had a cute little boat. Sunk it immediately.
-
Inspired by @avikat-art !! Southern Tord is a DELIGHT, thank you so much! 💕💕
-
That's it!! Thanks! :DD

twenty one pilots: Heathens (from Suicide Squad: The Album) [OFFICIAL VI... This is actually a song from the suicide squad. But originally it was about slender man. And it fits with either one. They're treated like freaks. They're used like. kindling and like freaks and Ford observers and really their spies a certain type and their clowns. And we don't like them and they're going to be used and they're already trying to Midwest constantly these guys. go out there. We need to. curtail their activities and we need to do it now for real And we'll use this battle right here in Florida to do it. right here in Florida to do it. It is huge right now. We have a lot of stuff to do and we have a lot of people to tend to here. And we need to whittle it down. But the things like the uranium and sugar are doing it for us They are getting nailed. And it's heavenly, there's so many dying. It's not true. There are a lot. of a lot of them that are going. today is gonna be a banner day. It's gonna be huge right now. They had 5 billion for this morning. And they are down to around 2 billion with the whole Florida conflict. And they called three more. and they're starting to get serious about it. Those five quarter to half mile Caverns. are Filling with salt water right now They will be full by. 2:00 PM even though the tunnels are not huge. and it almost works better. Yeah, it's safer and Those particular circles are going to dissolve faster. It's not brackish water. And by faster, we mean in several days. they'll be gone, but today, the steam clouds begin and they'll be quite large. Yesterday, the water came in and it steamed everywhere, but they stuff was not exposed that much. And it washed out from. turbulence coming in and out And today it's sizzling and heavily and it just started 4 hours ago. There. It's heaving in places their esteem pouring out of it. And froth. There's enough froth. to fill up all of downtown. Put in Florida. And that's from all five. But that's a lot of froth in about 10 feet thick. or deep in its huge it's all over the place. And it looks very weird. Even disgusting. Nothing's out there. but it's gross and it is about three rad at the surface. as you go up, it reduces to about 1.7 red that will increase throughout the day. and the clouds will bring it up here repetitively. and you people will suffer. Most of you are not mutants. Except for Down syndrome. And there are lower level. Our sun is around to 9. and Down syndrome ranges from a 1 to 1.5 to a 2 And the really small ones are the two And here then we'll have to get out of here if everyone else dies And he says that And he says that's fine. I know how to drive a bus I drove a huge camper. They say they want the huge camper. And he says it's possible even with 20 of us because you're small and can sleep around 8 in each bed and I started laughing and laughing and said where will you sleep? And he says I can sleep in the chair. and they said that's not the greatest but we get it and says it might help my balls They said, we don't really talk that way, that that's freaking great. And it is. And she used the word frig like frigging, and hits this wife's name, and he didn't mean to, he says, and he's smiling. And our son says, don't worry, i'll underestimate you all the time. It'll be a great trip.. we'll go to Santa Monica, and we'll take over the rich folks. by you being their kids at school And they're smiling and saying, that's a perfect job. We think we'll take it. and don't worry if the bridge goes out, we'll use a boat to go over to the other side. And then smiling and laughing and saying, boy, that was a quick one. We couldn't get through it.. I can run a forklift too, They know how to do all that stuff And it's funny, 'cause you keep pointing it out, and they're saying, ok, good. But, yeah, they can get boats going and all sorts of things. So it's a possibility. because, yeah, these guys will probably check out. So we're gonna print.
Thor Freya
Zues Hera And reallyAnd really, the marriage are giving us to do it because you're such an **** trump. And we really are forced to. It's not. you doing it, and it's gonna be hell 'cause you're an idiot and you say it all the time. Hudson's Charm
Tumblr media
Hudson, Florida is a hidden gem that’s too easy to miss while driving US19 along Florida’s Nature Coast. Located on the western side of Pasco County along the Gulf, the unincorporated modern-day coastal town has quite an interesting past. North of New Port Richey, Hudson started shaping up when Isaac Hudson and his wife Amanda moved their family from Alabama in 1878. The Hudsons made the trip from Alabama in two covered wagons with their boys herding cattle in front of the wagons. The move was prompted when Isaac’s doctor suggested the move to the warm salt air would help his bronchial problems. Three years after they arrived, Hudson and his wife Amanda established the first post office in their home. Prior to 1874, Hudson had a total population of 16. The area was rough, mostly consisting of wild animals, brush, and swamp land. Before Isaac Hudson arrived with his family in covered wagons the isolated area was rich with wild deer, boar, and turkey. Some of the Best Fishing (and Sponging) Waters in Florida In 1874, Hudson’s first settlers started the commercial fishing industry. The Bush, Lang, Frierson, Knowles, Stevenson, and Brady families were as rugged as could be. Mullet went for a penny each. At the time, a typical breakfast consisted of mullet and yams. A few years after the arrival of those first families, the first commercial fishing business is believed to have been established by John Lang. Fish were abundant, and the catches were large. Families would travel from other areas for days to load their barrels with salted fish in Hudson. Commercial Mullet Fishing in the early 1900s courtesy of Florida Memory. Settlers often traveled from as far as fifty miles to buy fish, which they would split, salt, and pack in barrels. The average family would transport five barrels to fill on a trip! With the improvement of transportation and facilities for ice storage in the early 1900s, the fishing industry became the main interest in the West Coast Florida town. During this period sponge divers from Key West brought their boats into Hudson’s landing for provisions. They began hooking sponges with long poles, holding glass-bottomed buckets over the water to see the sponges in the clear water below. Hudson became known as a small fishing village that had made it through the Civil War. It was not until later that the Greek sponge divers came to the bayou where Tarpon Springs now stands. The First Cemetery in Hudson https://youtu.be/RNf6snn05Sg A short video of the Hudson Cemetery and its historic marker by Dorothy Pyritz. Hudson Cemetery was established in 1878 by the family of Isaac W. and Amanda Hudson who had settled the Hudson community, originally known as Hudson's Landing. In 1980 the Pasco Board of County Commissioners erected a monument whose inscription reads, “This burial ground was established by the family of Isaac W. and Amanda Hudson who settled the Hudson community, originally known as Hudson's Landing. The first burial was that of their daughter Melissa in 1878. This rugged pioneer family came to Florida from Alabama and lived in Madison and Chipco before moving to the Gulf Coast area seeking a healthier climate.” After the Hudson family settled, more settlers came. Life was simple but very hard. Food was never a problem as hunting and fishing were abundant. There was plenty for everyone. The men hunted and constructed needed buildings, crafting the things needed to survive in Florida’s climate, while the women did a lot of cooking, sewing, and quilting. The first school in Hudson was a small log cabin and students attended only three months out of the year. Alfred Hudson (1872-1968), a son of Isaac W. Hudson, for whom Hudson, Florida, is named. Photo taken on Dec. 25, 1959, courtesy of Michelle McLaughlin, who writes, “Note the wood stove in the the kitchen in 1959. My grandmother said that he used that stove until his death. I can hardly believe that, but the picture of the home in 1946 (remodeled by Hershel) does show the stove pipe, so maybe it’s true.” Big Wheels start Turning in Hudson In 1885 a railroad between Tampa and Brooksville was built. The days of coastwise shipping by sail were numbered and soon after,  this colorful period of Florida’s Gulf history was over. In 1902, a connecting railroad was nearing completion, called the Brooksville and Hudson Railroad. It opened in 1904, with free rides given from Brooksville to Hudson and back as part of the celebration. Turpentine and mill work were the two main sources of work before World War I in Citrus County. Of course, fishing and farming were the way people sustained their families. Image courtesy of Florida Memory. Another aspect of the early Hudson prosperity came from Week's turpentine camp. Then a big company from Georgia came in and built a huge woodmill. The town grew when the Fivay Company began cutting lumber and shipping it by rail to Tampa. Unfortunately, the mill shut down when there were no more trees to cut. Then the turpentine mill burned down. Hudson was forever changed. A Port for Soldiers and Smugglers During the Civil War, the coastline along Hudson was frequently used as a port for Confederate blockade-runners when the Federal Navy had all of the principal ports on the coast closed. Rumor has it that the coast was a rendezvous point for rum runners and smugglers during the prohibition era. The vast coves and inlets accessible only by boat allowed these real-life pirates to run their illicit operations with little interference. Prehistoric Discoveries On July 21, 2016, Beth Gray, a Tampa Bay Times correspondent wrote a fascinating article that tells the story of Heritage Pines resident Herb Elliott and his wife Paula coming across a 270-foot deep sinkhole with layers and layers of Paleo Indian artifacts. (The Paleo period is believed to be 9000 - 12000 years ago.) The Elliotts were excited about their find and recovered over 3,500 artifacts including arrows and various tools used by the Paleo indians. Today, pictures of the artifacts are viewable at the Heritage Pines clubhouse. A Town on the Move and a Public Beach Fivay.org tells us that on Dec. 24, 1953, the New Port Richey Press reported, “Street lights were installed this week in Hudson, on the Gulf. Hudson now has street lighting, telephone service, water system and other city conveniences. The purchase of the light fixtures and automatic switches was made possible by a fish fry and donations from the citizens of the community, with the cooperation of the Withlacoochee River Electric Co-op, who installed fixtures and switches. Seventeen lights were installed at this time, with automatic switches to operate them, lights will burn all night.” In 1959 Hudson boasted a beautiful new public beach. Development began in the area, with canals being carved out to build homes, which affected the commercial fishing business. A side effect of this development crippled Hudson's commercial fishing industry. Fortunately, today there is an abundance of fish and quite a few charter boats with captains for hire. There are some memorable sunsets to be enjoyed from Hudson. Image by Pat Manfredo Hudson Florida Offers Fun Activities, Dining and Magical Sunsets Today's Hudson is a beautiful little coastal town to live in or visit. There are several parks and plenty of popular local places to eat,  drink, and have fun. A day on the beach at Sunwest Park is heavenly and exciting at the same time. The beautiful white sand and water await those looking for a calm day of rest and relaxation or an adrenaline-pumping adventure. Rest and relax at SunWest Park or get your adrenaline pumping at The Lift Adventure Park, located at SunWest Beach. Image courtesy of The Lift Adventure Park Facebook. The Lift Adventure Park is located at Sunwest Beach. They offer wakeboarding, a rope-free floating obstacle course for those who love adventure with no limits. There is also the floating bounce house,  kayaking, and canoes. Professionals are on-site to provide support on all levels and these activities require reservations and cost. A visit to the Florida Exotic Bird Sanctuary is an unforgettable experience. A caring environment including parrots, macaws, cockatoos, and more is a wonderful experience. Trip101.com tells us, “Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by a diverse array of colorful birds, including parrots, macaws, cockatoos, and many other fascinating species. Knowledgeable staff and volunteers will guide you through the facility, sharing insights into the birds’ stories and the importance of conservation efforts on its guided tours.” Reservations are required for tours. Reserve a guided tour at the Florida Exotic Bird Sanctuary in Hudson. Image courtesy of the Florida Exotic Bird Sanctuary's Facebook page. Thrill seekers can dive into an immersive experience at Hudson Escape Rooms full of twists, turns, and puzzles that must be completed before the clock runs out. Trip101 describes the experience as a “fantastic and immersive activity that challenges the mind and fosters teamwork in a thrilling setting." Hudson is a Great Day Trip on the Nature Coast Hudson is the place for adventure on the Gulf of Mexico. Right next to Skeleton Key Marina or Hudson Marina you can get a boat with a captain and head out to sea for the day. When you come back, the beach and ice-cold beverages will be waiting. Yes, the seafood is so good in Hudson that Cranes and Herons regularly fish the shores. Image by Dorothy Pyritz. If you’re a fan of coastal cuisine, there are many fantastic places to visit. Next to Hudson Beach, there is Sam’s Beach Bar where you can sit on the deck and watch the colors of a magnificent Gulf sunset right before your eyes. Some of the best seafood around is at Inn on the Gulf, where everything is fresh and delicious. Their escargot is to die for! For burgers and ice-cold beverages, there’s Ollies on the Beach. All of these wonderful spots have outside seating for your enjoyment. To top it all off,  one can’t skip the Hudson Ice Cream parlor. Hudson is a small coastal town that perfectly captures the essence and feel of coastal Florida living. Resources: - Fivay.org - Hudsonfl.org - Trip101.com - Tampa Bay Times Read the full article

SMART BOMB
The Completely Unnecessary News Analysis
By Christopher Smart
October 3, 2023
THE BABY AND THE BATHWATER
Hey Wilson, guess what? The government didn't shut down, after all. Nobody knows exactly why because no one can figure out what the hell is going on. In May, the Biden Administration worked out an agreement with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to avoid a government shutdown. But McCarthy went back on the deal 'cause Florida firebrand Matt “Baby” Gaetz and a dozen crazies wanted to shut down the government to prove a point. What point? Don't ask silly questions. Baby Gaetz showed McCarthy he was serious by spitting in his face and calling him a pussy. To which McCarthy retorted, “Sticks and stones will break my bones but spit will never hurt me.” Well, not exactly. In order to win the Speaker's seat McCarthy promised Gaetz and his band of MAGAttes that if he didn't do what they wanted they could pants him. So McCarthy did as they said but they pants him anyway. Then McCarthy did something completely unexpected, he COMPROMISED with Democrats. WTF! In doing so he threw Baby Gaetz out with the bathwater, leaving him dripping with spite, absent his signature skunk-eating-garlic grin. An angry Baby Gaetz promised retribution and he got it on Oct 3 in Shakespeare-style as he led a revolt that ousted McCarthy from the Speaker's chair. Et tu Brute!
DON'T LIKE HOMELESS PEOPLE— SUE 'EM
Those damn homeless people are at it again — they're creating a nuisance on streets, sidewalks and public parks, according to a recent lawsuit and it's all Salt Lake City's fault. “Salt Lake City (read Mayor Erin Mendenhall) has adopted a policy of inviting and fostering vagrancy, public camping, public urination, public defecation, and the public use of illegal drugs on its property... ” What's wrong with you, Salt Lake City. Why can't you fix homelessness. Maybe they should sue San Francisco, too, and L.A., San Diego, Denver, New York City, Burlington, VT... And heck why not just sue the whole damn country. There are one million homeless people in this country — in 1980 there was only a tiny fraction of that. Here at Smart Bomb we just call it Reaganomics: quit spending money on the social safety net and affordable housing; cut taxes on the wealthy and money will just trickle down. A rising tide floats all boats and homeless people will just float away or drown. You're right Wilson, maybe we should sue the bastards who set up this economic system that makes the rich richer and the poor poorer 'cause Congress sure as hell isn't going to do anything about it. Or we could send the homeless away somewhere, like the Reagan National Library in Simi Valley, California. Call it The Grapes of Wrath.
LDS CHURCH: TIM BALLARD IS A BAD, BAD BOY
Well, there goes Tim Ballard's Temple Recommend. That's a bummer for a would-be Mormon hero, especially if he's planning a run for the U.S. Senate. As you will recall, Ballard invented Operation Underground Railroad (OUG), a nonprofit claiming to fight sex trafficking. IRS tax filings for 2021 show that OUG had 82.1 million in assets against 1.38 million in liabilities. Not bad work if you can get it. You guys seen any sex trafficking around here. Maybe you'd like to make a contribution. Ballard was big and getting bigger after “Sound of Freedom” — a movie based on his heroic work — became a box-office smash. Utah A.G. Sean Reyes was one of Ballard's biggest fans and went undercover with him in Colombia to flush out traffickers and save girls, or so the story goes. But now Shifty Sean is backing away from Ballard and won't endorse him for the Senate since several women complained that Tim made inappropriate advances. Tim also bragged that LDS Apostle M. Russell Ballard was central to his business dealings. President Ballard did what? Oops, you screwed up, Tim. He has stepped down as CEO of OUR, which is too bad 'cause rescuing trafficked girls is such a good gig. But that's peanuts compared to a Temple Recommend. Eternity can be such a long time.
Post script — That's about it for another fun-filled week here at Smart Bomb, where we read banned books so you don't have to. OK Wilson, do you remember in junior high the big hit that was Henry Miller's “Tropic of Cancer.” French people actually did that? Did our parents know? How could they? And no, “The Tropic of Cancer” was not in the school library. As the paperback made its rounds, all the good parts got underlined. That was cool 'cause it saved a lot of time. Those sultry James Bond books were popular, too. The dude knew how to work it. Where did Ian Flemming get that stuff. We obviously had a lot to learn. And then there was “The Diary of Anaïs Nin.” Holy smokes. Girls were thinking that, too. OMG! Banning books is hip again. Some parents and MAGA mobs are ripping books out of libraries and screaming at school boards and librarians intent on turning children into sex fiends or homosexuals or communists. Yes Wilson, it is reminiscent of the “War on Drugs. Don't want college students to smoke pot? Easy, just outlaw it. Don't want teenagers to know how the French have sex? Easy, just ban books. Right. Don't want middle school kids turning gay. Easy, just ban “And Tango Makes Three,” “Beyond Magenta” and “Captain Underpants.” Take that, Satan.
Well Wilson, it's just too bad Sean Reyes and Tim Ballard had to break up. They were such a great couple, going around the world in disguise to get them sex traffickers and save all them girls and then telling everybody how cool they were. It's just too bad — a shame, really. So what do you and the guys in the band have that might help with the big breakup:
I don't care if you never come home I don't mind if you just keep on Rowing away on a distant sea 'Cause I don't love you and you don't love me You cause a commotion when you come to town You give 'em a smile and they melt Having lovers and friends is all good and fine But I don't like yours and you don't like mine I don't care what you do at night Oh, and I don't care how you get your delights I'm gonna leave you alone, I'll just let it be I don't love you and you don't love me I tried to love you for years upon years You refuse to take me for real It's time you saw what I want you to see And I'd still love you if you'd just love me I don't care if you never come home I don't mind if you just keep on Rowing away on a distant sea 'Cause I don't love you and you don't love me

Parings→ peter Parker x reader
Warnings→slowburn, fake dating, fluff
Summary→when you lie to your mom about having a boyfriend before vactation peter steps in to help. But being in a fake relationship isnt as easy as you thought. especially not easy when you two have feelings for one another.
A/n→ here is part two of seasick! @spectacularlyspidey made me this lovely moodboard, I love Ren 🥰 I hope you guys enjoy it and I’m going to try and post it more often if that is what you guys want💗
Tumblr media
Toothbrush, Peter, you need your toothbrush.” May helps him pack. She seemed more excited than peter. Peter placed his clothes into bens old suitcase as if it was a chore. Hes scared, beyond scared. What if your family hates him, what if they think hes less of what they expected, what if they catch on? All the ideas and scenarios ran through his head.
“May, i've got it. I'm 19 not 14.” he reminded her and she pouted. She knew the whole plane, he had nothing to hide from her Anyways.
“You know that you can still say no.” she comes over to run a hand through Peter's hair. She knew when Peter had a crush, she always did. Although normally he'd get scared of going on a field trip with one or a study date, never a summer vacation.
“She needs me to do this. I told her i would and were setting boundaries on the plane so when we get there its not weird.” he told her and she hummed.
“I know you really like her, like more than a friend. I have a tingle too.” she teases and peter scrunches his face. “But think this can be a start, you maybe could start something here.” she kisses his forehead before leaving him in his rom to finish packing. He looks over at his phone to see the time, he sees how you’ll be at his house soon and picking him up for the airport. The airport where you'd meet your family in Florida where you’d go out to sea.
He shuts the suitcase and listens to the sound of it zipping up before flopping on his bed letting the time run out.
-
8 hours, it was an 8 hour flight filled with anxiety and fear. You had both agreed on a list. A list of things to do around your family
-forehead kisses are allowed(kisses on the lips not necessary unless needed)
-holding hands as often as we can
-snuggling up to one another
-going places together like the pool or restaurant
-pet names
-make up stories about each other
-hands always on one another
That was about it. That's all you two had to do and you'd keep it up for a week. Then when the two of you get home things go back to normal. Normal. That word hurt peters ears. Normal meant there were no real feelings and he'd have to let go of you.
“I-i can hold your bags.” he offered as you two got off the plane. He wore his Columbia hoodie with sweats, probably not the best option for landing in Florida but he was so nervous.
You give him a warm smile and nod. You were nervous too, for almost all the same reasons as peter. You wished you could have just taken ned, ned or another friend who was just seen as your friend. Someone you didn't have to think so much about kissing. Someone you didn't have to think about pretending to hold. Someone you didn't have to worry catching feelings for.
“Wait,” you stop him and he looks at you with soft eyes. “My mom is really....touchy. She loves hugging and she might kiss your cheek. It’s nothing to intentionally make you uncomfortable but i'm really sorry in advance.” you warn him.
He nods as from a distance your mom shouts your name. She's wearing a sundress and sandals, ready for a vacation. Your dad is next to her smiling ready to hug you, now he knew it was real. All of it was now real. If your mom and dad intimidated him he was scared to see the rest of your family.
“Oh sweetheart i've missed you so much, ugh New York is such a small yet big state. We wished college did hog you so much.” she kisses your cheeks.
“Mom, dad, this is my boyfriend...Peter, the one I've been telling you about.” you hold his arm and he's already smiling and going in to shake hands. Your mom takes him for a hug and gets pink lipgloss on his cheek.
He sees how much you look like her, the hair, the eyes, the smile that's so contagious, but the personalities are completely different. She was bubbly and happy all over the place while you, you were a little more reserved and only showed the good side to your friends. Save the best parts of you for the best people.
“Ugh i was starting to think she'd never get one, especially not one so handsome and smart.” she holds his arms giving them a squeeze. “Wow he works out too you can really tell.” You quickly take him back before he gets uncomfortable.
“Mom…” you warn and she scoffs.
“Sweetheart, you know I'm teasing. Your sisters are already boarded and waiting so we can leave when you two are ready.” sisters. You never told him about sisters. He didn't even know you had any siblings. He thought you were always an only child. You never talked about any siblings or really family except your mom and dad and occasionally your aunt.
But he can tell by your facial expressions that you were already dreading it more than him, dredging sisters but he didn't know why. He wasn't going to push it either. By the shift in your body he knew it was best to just question when you two were alone.
He willingly followed your family into a cab where you four set off for a week of one of the hardest masks he had to put on, the mask of pretending to love you when he really did but could never tell you.

Never being on a cruise ship before he had no idea what to expect. His bare knowledge being the titanic—which did not help his fear of the ocean—even for the smartest kid, normally, he didn’t know much about boats. He never even considered himself to be on one, until last summer he never even thought he’d be in Europe for his senior year of highschool. That’s how he had to think of this, Europe. Semi-relaxing, regular peter, Europe. This was a once and a lifetime opportunity for him to be on a cruise with no Spider-Man activity, No stress, nothing but the sun on his skin.
“So we eat dinner at 7pm, you kids can get all settled in...maybe find yourself at the spa or the pool. Don’t be shy to order room service, ugh the boy is handsome but skinny.” Your mom comments once again. You give her eyes and a groan as you follow her down the hall to your room. “Oh please, you eat too, you're starting to lose your color.” She picks up your arm and you take it back.
He didn’t think the teasing was that bad, sure the appearance comments were too soon but he thought it was all a part of her bubbly personality. May teases all of them to eat when they’re over. May has teased all of them but always in a nice way.
When Peter dated Gwen—his ex girlfriend—last year she was the same. Always telling Peter about his appearance but he never really cared what she had to say. He just really needed someone at the time to move on from you.
“Here is your room, you kids have fun.” She hands you the card and kisses your cheek. “Wear the sundress your sister picked out, don’t be late.” She warned and walked down the hall. Only a few hours in and you wished you would’ve made some crap excuse about having a late final or actually telling the truth.
You two enter the room and Peter is shocked. It’s a gorgeous beach themed room. If he were a child he would already be jumping on the bed and touching everything. You seem to just drop your bags on the floor and immediately go to the bathroom. He leaves you be, taking in the beauty of the room, the California king bed, the wall hung T.V. The view of the ocean that made him slightly nervous but he didn’t mind. There was a dress on the bed, the sundress your mom wanted you to wear.
“Oh fuck.” You rub your face seeing that there’s the one bed. You thought maybe she’d at least use some sense and get two beds, that or a two roomed hotel. “I’m sorry pete, I thought she would maybe get us two rooms or—“
Another thing he seemed to notice was how money didn’t seem to be an issue for your family yet you never seemed to come off as well off. You lived in a small apartment like peter, your clothes were mostly thrifted or old, you ate ramen about three times a week and if it wasn’t that it was cheap pizza. Just like the rest of the group. You never came off as rich, it shocked him to even hear about a cruise, it shocked him even more that you could just say about how they could’ve gotten two rooms on a ship.
“It’s a California king,” he gestures. “We’ll fit without touching each other.” He calms you with a soft smile seeing how stressed you were.
“You’re not too scared of ships are you?” You ask him remembering how he said something about being afraid of the water.
“Well...Uh...no but yes, it makes me nervous but—“ your hand places itself over peters for comfort and he freezes up. You notice and quickly take your hand away.
“It won’t feel like anything trust me, you don’t feel the ship rock or anything. It’s not the titanic.” You reminded him as you picked up your phone and looked at the time. You two had plenty of time to get yourself ready.
“So….” he clasp his hands together and you look over to him. “For dinner how should I act?” He questions. You’re getting comfortable in the bed already while he’s still scared to touch it.
“Just be Peter, um...maybe a hand around my shoulder at one point or hand holding? Just like our list said. Really sell it. They’re gonna ask a lot of questions of how we met and stuff like that but I can do all of them if you want.” You tell him and he nods.
“Right,” he responded thinking the best thing to do was just be peter, the peter you knew, not the peter who was totally in love with you. “Just be peter.”
And that’s all he had to do.

April 9, 2021: Some Like It Hot (1959) (Recap: Part Two)
I’m considering a historical post for Marilyn Monroe...
Tumblr media
After all, the life and tragic death of Norma Jean Baker is interesting, and I enjoy educating myself about film history and its greatest figures and stars...but I dunno. This isn’t really a starring vehicle for her, and I’d be better off doing a Tony Curtis or Jack Lemmon retrospective. But...I’ll make that decision by the time I get to the Review. We’ll see, is what I’m saying. If anybody actually specifically wants me to make that as a post, let me know! Maybe I’ll do it regardless.
Tumblr media
But OK, let’s get into the movie once more! I’m enjoying the shenanigans in this picture, so let’s see more of them! First part is right here!
Recap (2/2)
Tumblr media
On the beach, the girls are all having a good time, “Daphne” included, when Sugar suddenly runs into a mysterious man wearing a stereotypical rich person sailing outfit. This is, of course, Joe, but he introduces himself as “Junior”, the heir to the Shell Oil company, and owner of a yacht. And yeah...Sugar’s fooled and Sugar’s hooked. She invites him to come to his show that night, and he says that he’ll try to come.
Tumblr media
This is to Jerry’s frustration, as he immediately recognizes Joe (obviously), and tries to expose his trickery to Sugar by going back to their room to tell “Josephine” about the whole thing. But SOMEHOW, Joe’s able to sneak back in and jump into the bath, suit and tie on. Dude’s slick. Sugar leaves, and an irritated Joe gets ready to fight Jerry. But just then, the phone rings, and it’s that naughty boy Osgood (HIS WORDS NOT MINE), who invites “Daphne” onto his yacht after the show that night. Opportunity.
Tumblr media
Joe hatches a plan, with the reluctant help of Jerry, who’ll keep Osgood occupied as Daphne. Meanwhile, he’ll sneak onto the yacht as Junior, and pass it off as his own yacht for Sugar’s benefit (and his own, obviously). With the plan in place, the performance goes on that night. And that GIF of Marilyn doing a shrug that I keep using? It comes from this song right here, which serves as Sugar’s leitmotif throughout the film. And...it’s Marilyn Monroe, and it’s also that DRESS, and it’s my teenage crush on Monroe coming back WITH A FUCKING VENGEANCE, and...it’s also a catchy song, not gonna lie.
Tumblr media
Using flowers given to “Daphne” by King Simp Osgood, and a pre-written note, he tells Sugar to meet him that night on the yacht. After the performance, both Sugar and Joe make their way to the docks, and Joe commanders Osgood’s motorboat to get to the yacht, posing with his fake-ass accent all the while. Seriously, either she’s rolling rocks on her Sense Motive checks, or he’s just throwing away natural 20s on Bluff checks. It’s ridiculous.
Tumblr media
On the yacht, Joe bluffs some more (equally terribly), and notes that they’re alone on the boat. However, he claims that he’s both impotent and unable to fall in love, emotionally and physically. This is a result of psychological trauma from his Princeton girlfriend falling off of a cliff in the Grand Canyon, just as they were about to kiss for the first time. Jesus Christ, the fact that this is working so well is astonishing. Sugar tries to cure him through multiple kisses, and he responds with very little reaction, the clever devil. Which is particularly difficult as she basically attempts to seduce him. And it’s Marilyn Monroe, so...I mean come on.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, poor, POOR Jerry is forced to dance at a local Cuba dance hall with Osgood, who’s frustrated by “Daphne’s” constant attempts to lead. Nice touch there! The humorous interludes of their dancing interject Sugar and Junior’s make out sessions, which are VERY against the goddamn Hays Code. And eventually, Jerry actually seems to start enjoying his dance with Osgood, and they actually close the place down until morning! Huh. That leaves Osgood none the wiser, as they leave the yacht just as he’s arriving.
Tumblr media
Joe goes back to their room, where Jerry’s still dancing the tango, and he has an announcement: he’s engaged! To Osgood! What? I mean, that’s a set-up for some SERIOUS trust issues down the line, but...huh! For 1959, that’s surprisingly progressive...sort of. Jerry’s SPECIFICALLY in this to marry a millionaire and get a quick divorce and alimony payments every month. Huh. I mean, it’s slimy, but at least he’s open-minded. Osgood even gave him a bracelet absolutely covered in diamonds.
Sugar comes in to tell “Josephine” and “Daphne” about her night with “Junior”, and everybody’s happy (I mean, not Jerry, but he’s OK). Shame if something happened, like the arrival of the mobsters trying to kill Joe and Jerry.
Tumblr media
So, the mobsters trying to kill Joe and Jerry arrive, under the pretenses of being “Friends of Italian Opera”, and are in search of the two witnesses of the garage massacre. Detective Mulligan is also in search of them, and is in Florida alongside Spats and his men. The two narrowly escape them in an elevator, then immediately go to pack their shit and GO!
But Jerry doesn’t want to leave Osgood so unceremoniously, and Joe feels the same way about Sugar. Over the phone, he manages to get ahold of Sugar as “Junior”, and tells her that he must leave unexpectedly, and that he’s to marry an oil heiress in Venezuela. This crushes Sugar, understandably, but he also gives her Osgood’s diamond bracelet! Aw, poor Jerry.
Tumblr media
Poor Sugar, too. As said previously, she’s crushed, and she goes to Josephine and Daphne’s room to get some bourbon. “Josephine” tells her that she’ll move on in time, but she replies that that’s impossible, given that there’s a Shell gas station on every corner. Fuckin’ OUCH.
Things get even worse when the two leave their rooms via the window, only to be spotted by Spats and his men, and are this time recognized, due to Jerry leaving his gunshot bass on the porch where they can see it. They attempt once again to escape, changing costume to resemble a bellhop and an old man in a wheelchair, but get recognized and chased, until they wind up under a table in a banquet hall where the “Friends of Italian Opera” are meeting.
Tumblr media
Led by Little Bonaparte (Nehemiah Persoff), the members are, of course, all members of the mafia. Bonaparte is greatly angered by the massacre, as Toothpick Charlie was a friend of his. Through a comically over-the-top mobster speech, he basically telegraphs that we wants Spats dead. And when they bring a big cake out to celebrate Spats’ birthday (which isn’t for another four months), a mobster springs out of the cake, and kills the entire Chicago mob assembled, all with Joe and Jerry still under the table in front of them.
After the deaths of the mobsters, Joe and Jerry take their chance to escape, while Mulligan comes in to investigate these deaths. Our musician duo manages once again to escape, performing a quick change act and turning back into Josephine and Daphne. They make a plan to escape via Osgood’s yacht (as the mobsters are watching the roads and airports), and Jerry makes the call. Joe then hears the siren call of Sugar, singing a lamenting song in the lounge with the band.
Tumblr media
Watching over this sad song, Joe laments his actions, and makes his way down to the stage, still disguised as Josephine. And he just kisses her, right on stage. Which...fuck me, this movie takes place in 1929? THE SCANDAL!!! But that’s quickly diffused when Sugar AND the mobsters recognize Josephine (and Junior) as Joe, and Joe takes off in hot pursuit.
Tumblr media
Both Josephine and Daphne manage to escape yet one more time, and make their way to the docks with Osgood. And chasing after them is Sugar, in love with Joe after all that, and the two come together in a loving embrace. Meanwhile, in the front of the boat, Osgood and Jerry have...well, the only thing I already knew from this movie, and arguably the most famous ending to a comedy film ever made. Go ahead and watch it, because I’d rather not spoil it.
youtube
That was...a very funny film! Is it the absolute funniest film ever made? I don’t think it is personally, but it’s definitely in my top 10! I’ll analyze Some Like It Hot more soon enough, in the Review! See you then!

Choose Your Own Adventure: Pogue Style
summary: you and your brothers are tasked with looking after your baby cousin when things quickly go south. where will you choose to look for your cousin, and who will you run into?
pairing: reader x ?
word count: 1,089
beta’d by: @thatjohnd and @shawnssongs (thank you both so much!!) they’re both absolutely wonderful people and you should check our their writing!
The Dock The Kitchen
a/n: so this is something new i’m trying out. my indecisiveness couldn’t decide who to pair reader with so i just decided i would write four different versions and turn this into a sort of choose your own adventure fic. basically, at the end (once i’ve written the different versions and linked them) you pick a location which will link to a different pogue’s fic. i’ll link the fics up here but also at the end. i am so excited for this, and i hope y’all are too!
Tumblr media
Being the youngest of three children, you didn’t really have any experience when it came to like... looking after kids. It wasn’t like there was any occasion for there to even be kids for you to look after. That is, until your dad’s younger brother got married and had kids of his own. And then suddenly you were like an older sibling. You were always looking after your younger cousins when they came to visit or when you went down to Florida to spend a couple weeks with your dad’s family. Out of all of your little cousins though, you had an especially soft spot for Jaime, the baby. Everyone doted on him, but he was like your baby so you would keep a close eye on him whenever he was around.
This year, his parents were celebrating a milestone anniversary, and therefore needed someone to look after the kids while they went on some cruise or something. Most of them would be at various summer camps anyway, so when they called up your parents, they assured you all that you would only be looking after Jaime. And to you and your brothers’ credit, all three of you took looking after Jaime very seriously. Most of the time, when your parents were working in the restaurant, y’all would have to take care of him. Feed him, change him, bathe him, entertain him. And you were happy to do it.
So when your parents told you, right as you and your brothers were heading out to surf, that they needed you to look after your cousin, the plans for the day were changed with only slight disappointment.
“I’m telling you right now you’re a hazard to children everywhere,” Christian snapped at Diego in the passenger seat.
“Wh-- kids fuckin’ love me.”
You rolled your eyes at him as you covered your cousin’s little ears. At six years old, he delighted in repeating everything you and your brothers said, and if you were being honest, the three of you rarely had any filters.
“There is no way in hell that your idea of letting Jaime sit on your surfboard would end up in anything but catastrophe!”
“I mean, it worked in Lilo and Stitch,” you said.
“See? y/n is on my side,” Diego smirked.
“They’re pointing out an example from an animated movie, dumbass. Bringing him to the country club to make fun of all the white golfers is much more child friendly,” Christian told him.
“Are we teaching him to be a bully though?” you asked.
“No, because golfers deserve to be bullied, just facts.”
“...That checks out.”
Jaime laughed when you made a face at him and wrinkled his nose as he attempted to touch it with his tongue. You ruffled his hair and grinned. Cute kids were your biggest weakness, not that you would let anyone know that. You and your brothers tended to keep to yourselves, which was only getting harder now that both of them were in college. You found yourself in a tentative friendship with Kiara Carrera, another outside at the “Kook Academy” as you liked to call your school. The two of you only really hung out at school, although you would occasionally text each other or wave when you saw each other around the island. You were pretty sure her friends didn’t like you though. So you tried to stay out of their hair, never pressing Kie to hang out with you when you knew she would rather be with her boys. It could get pretty lonely, especially during the school year when you didn’t have your brothers to keep you company, but you dealt with it. Better than trying to hang out with anyone else who lived in the figure eight, and anyone from the Cut automatically assumed you were like the rest of the Kooks. You couldn’t really blame them.
“Yo, is that Kie’s van?” Diego asked, stirring you from your thoughts.
You looked out the window as Christian parked to see the beat up Volkswagen Kie and her group drove around in. You smiled at the ‘eat the rich’ sticker on the back. While you hadn’t seen her in over a week, she’d texted you last night to tell you about something stupid JJ had done at John B’s place and how Pope was this close to actually smoking one of JJ’s joints. As much as you told yourself you were fine being alone, and as much as you knew the Pogues weren’t fond of you, you still couldn’t help but want to be a part of their group. At least just a little bit. And it had absolutely nothing to do with the fact you had a tiny crush on one of the Pogues. None at all.
“Shit guys, I gotta pee real quick,” you told them as you stopped and put Jaime down. “I’ll only be like a second.”
Your brothers waved you off, and so you ran into the nearest bathroom while they waited with your cousin. You always forgot how fucking nice everything was at the country club, and the bathrooms were no exception. There were little cups for mouthwash, as if that was something absolutely needed, but you had to admit it was kinda tempting. Like, it was provided for you, so why wouldn’t you use it? And now you realized why everyone on the Cut thought Kooks were pretentious, entitled assholes. You kind of were with your fancy bathrooms and mouthwash.
“Hey guys,” you greeted as you left the bathroom. “Sorry I took so long, I got distracted by the mouthwa-- where’s Jaime?”
Christian and Diego looked up from their phones in a panic to see your baby cousin wasn’t with them. Diego even looked at his empty hand as if he couldn’t believe he didn’t notice Jaime’s wasn’t holding it.
“What. The. Fuck. I left you guys for like two minutes max!”
“He’s a small child! They can slip away easily!” Diego argued, his voice cracking in distress. “He couldn’t have gotten far! He’s like three feet tall! His legs can’t cover much ground!”
“Just fucking split up!” Christian snapped.
You immediately bolted, thinking of the different places he could go. There was the dock because he loved boats, or the kitchen because he loved food, or the veranda because he liked looking at the pretty birds, or the computer lounge because he had discovered Club Penguin. Where would he be?

“Alright, keep a lookout.” JJ reminded you as you pulled up to the hotel,”We’re behind enemy lines.” he pulled out the gun, ignoring how John B argued with him as he loaded it, in full display. “Can never be too careful.” JJ reminded you.
“Hey, I predict bringing a weapon to a four star hotel will likely cause more problems than it solves.”
“Thank you, Pope.” John B sighed.
Kie leaned forward, her head sticking through to the front of the VW, “I swear to God, I’m gonna throw that gun in the ocean, JJ. Put it back.”
You reached through the window and snatched the gun off him, leaning over and handing it to John B, glaring at JJ as you pulled back out of his van window.
“”You can’t grab a gun like that!” he leaned forwards to argue, but at the look of your face when you turned around, he sighed, hopping out of the car, “Can’t forget my badge - professional bus-boy.”
“So where are we going now?” Pope inquired, following JJ to the doors.
“We’re getting the internet because only rich people have electricity right now.” JJ explained, leading you through the crowded, steamy kitchen and trying to grab some bits of food as he did, calling a greeting to a guy named Andrew. “See they got the backup generators going? Kooks don’t miss a beat.” he led you to a door, which opened to a load of computers.
“Sweet Lord, the internet!” Pope ran to the computer, sitting down, “I’ve missed you.”
“Let me get in there,” JJ spoke, “gotta check on my insta models.” you rolled your eyes, walking to the window and watching the ant’s nest of rich people thrive. You heard Pope type in the coordinates, and walked back to see what was going on. After the discovery of it being only 900 feet, and JJ telling you about the drone-camera-thing and his dad’s redundancy, you left again, not wanting to stick around for long.
--
“Pope, we’re not stealing the drone, we’re… borrowing it.” John B tried to justify.
“‘Humans are the only animal that can’t tell fantasy from reality.’” said Pope vaguely.
“Did you come up with that?” John B asked.
“Albert Bernstein came up with it,” he clarified, “but it applies to this whole treasure-hunting thing. So, which is it? Fantasy, or reality?”
“Why’re you so weird, Pope?” JJ asked, concentrating on rolling his blunt.
“It’s fantasy, but possible reality.” Kie suggested.
“Reality.” John B looked around at the group.
“Virtual reality.” JJ muttered, flicking his lighter on and going to light his blunt. You snatched the spliff off of him.
“The smell’s doing my head in.” you said, ignoring his hurt expression.
“Keep the signal clear.” Pope agreed.
“You know what your problem is?” JJ piped up, glaring at you.
“You?” You quipped, raising your eyebrow as if to say ‘I dare you’.
“No!” he shook his head, holding your gaze, “It’s that you take everything so seriously! And you don’t bother to find out what really happened. You make an assumption without knowing the full story.” he didn’t break eye contact with you. John B stopped the van, and you inhaled, holding your anger in.
“My problem,” you seethed, “Is that there is only one way to take most things. I don’t need to know the full story, because the message came through - loud and clear - regardless.”
“Well maybe,” JJ started, the pair of you ignoring the faces of your fellow pogues as your voices rose, “if you knew the other side to the story, you would know that that’s not how it was meant.”
“Really?” you laughed incredulously, and you could tell he knew he was entering a danger zone, “Because there’s only one way to take it JJ! Please, please, enlighten me on literally any other way I could have taken it!”
“Okay,” John B said, overpowering your argument, and drawing your attention to the shocked and confused faces of your friends, “Y’all need to sort your shit out, in the meantime, JJ, Pope, the gate’s open, let’s go, and Y/N, get ready, getaway driver.”
You moved to the driver’s seat, grumbling about being a getaway driver as you watched the three boys run through the gate, which was crawling shut.
You waited for about ten minutes, bored out of your mind as you held a hardly engaging text conversation with a girl from your old school. Your bored brain’s trance was interrupted by the cutting sound of a dog barking. You looked through the wire gate, seeing that the guard had left the car. You jumped out of the car, slamming the door as you ran to the gate, pulling yourself up and over, jumping down the other side in a well-practiced manner, running towards the barking.
You scaled the rows of boats until you saw the guard, calming the dog down as he shouted to a boat. From your angle, you could see a rucksack. JJ.
“Excuse me?” you yelled, and the guard turned his attention to you as you walked towards him. “Uh, sorry, Officer, you left the gate open.” you lied, racking your brain for a lie to distract the man. “There was a girl with a flat tire.” Please, Kie, be there.
“I know.” he responded gruffly, and you nodded.
“Well, Sir, she’s like, panicking ‘cause you ran off, and she has to get to the ferry. You should probably help her out.”
He looked you up and down suspiciously as you played with your hair, battering your eyelashes lightly. He sighed, walking away, the dog in tow. You waited until he was out of sight, and earshot, to call out to JJ. His head appeared over the side of the boat, and then he stood and jogged down the steps to face you. You barely spared him a glance, heading towards the impound yard at the back.
“C’mon, shithead.” you murmured, hearing his footsteps follow you, catching up and joining your stride.
“Y/N,” he attempted, trying to catch your attention as you stared straight on.
“JJ,” you mocked, “I don’t want to talk about it. It should never have happened, and I’m sorry it did. Can we move on?”
You didn’t wait for a reply as you stormed off, towards the others, leaving his heart breaking in the dust.
--
“Kie,” you sighed, collecting glasses from one of the tables, “I told you, okay? He pushed me away. I mean, message received, loud and clear.”
“But you were drunk, maybe he just didn’t want to take advantage of you?” she offered, and you put the tray of glasses down, sighing and looking over to her.
“He just kind of, walked off.” you reminded her, “He just pushed me away and walked off. I felt like such an idiot - it was so humiliating, I mean he flirts with me, he asks me about all the right things, he wants to know about me, and who I am in a way that no guy ever has before. And I guess I got so caught up in my feelings that I didn’t realise they were one-sided. He pushed me away, and there’s only one way to take that. Besides, you saw how he acted at the yard.” You dropped your head into your hands. “How do I face him Kie?” you could feel her rub your back, “How do I face him, and the boys - he’s definitely told the boys - after I embarrassed myself like that?”
She sighed, taking your face in her hands, “With your head held high, like a fucking a boss, because it’s his loss.”
“You’re a poet and you don’t even know it.”
--
You had dined at the Wreck, still ignoring JJ and agreeing to reconvene at the Chateau in the early morning to test the drone, which was what you were now doing, as the sun began to creep over the marsh, dawn only having been an hour ago. Pope and JJ stood next to you, checking the camera, with Kie and John B in the water and you sat on the side of the pontoon.
“God bless geeks, Pope, truly man.” JJ said, looking at the screen. “What would we do without you to control the drone?”
“It’s not a drone,” you pointed out, “It’s an ROV.”
“Shut up, shut up.” He said, looking out at Kie and John B, “It’s too early for that right now.”
“Hey, once we get footage of the wreck, we’ll bring it to a lawyer in town and file a claim.” said John B.
“It’s such bullshit, why do we have to do that?”
“Well there is maritime salvage law.” You pointed out.
“You can’t just go to the bottom of the ocean and scoop a bunch of stuff up.” confirmed Pope.
“I know, I know, it’s just, lawyers aren’t cheap, bro.”
“JJ, we’re about to get our hands on 400 mil, and you’re worried about being cheap?” you snorted.
“And as soon as they see the footage they’ll work for a comp.” John B explained.
“How do you know all of that?” Kie asked.
“‘Cause my dad said it. Like, a million times.”
“This tether is like, really long.” Pope pointed out, “In the wrong weather it could get pushed around.”
“Then we’ll go in dead calm.” you shrugged, glancing at the storm clouds above you, “So not today.”
“So now we just gotta wait around for the right weather.” You pulled up the weather app on your phone, “Or tomorrow, thank God.” You stood up, “I gotta go anyway. I’ll be back tomorrow evening, so see you guys then.”
The pogues looked confused and you shrugged, “I have a ferry to catch.”
“A ferry?” Kie asked.
“Yeah, my brother’s driving from college to Florida to meet his girlfriend so he’s passing through, I said I’d meet him on the mainland until he leaves tomorrow.” you explained, grabbing your bag. “See you later.”
--
“Do you ever think about Mom?” you asked, taking a scoop of ice cream, making Lewis look at you, nodding slowly. “‘Cause I feel shitty, like yeah, she did some fucked up shit, and is one of the major factors as to why I’m now living in some islands on the other side of the country, but, she keeps calling me, and I want to pick up. Does that make me a bad person?”
“No.” Your brother shook his head, “She’s our mom, you’re still allowed to talk to her, even if you can’t see her. Besides, we deserve some closure, so if you can get it off her, then do.”
You nodded. “I miss her. And I miss how happy Dad was when he was around her. How happy we all were. It hurts that she did that to us.” you looked out to sea, watching the islands in the distance.
“Me too, little sis, me too.” he leant against the bollard next to him.
“So, you have a girlfriend.” you grinned at the way he blushed, “How long you been together?”
“Eight months, since the start of college.” he smiled.
“I’m happy for you.” you smiled at the thought of him finally finding the right girl, he deserved it.
“Thanks.” he grinned, “How about you? Any guys in the Outer Banks catching your eye?”
You thought about lying, but you decided you’d done enough of that for a lifetime. “There was, but I don’t think so anymore. Things are… weird.”
“Oh yeah, what’s his name?” he nudged you.
“JJ. I thought we had something going on, but I guess he made it clear that that was fabricated.”
“How so?”
“We were like, hanging out everyday, and flirting and shit, but he kinda rejected me when I kissed him.”
“It’s his loss, any guy would be lucky to have you. But if you need me to kick his ass, I’ll get on that ferry with you and do it like, as soon as I can.”
“You’re so extra.”
“You got friends?”
“What do you mean? You think I’m a loner or something?”
“It’s a simple question!”
“Yes. Yes, I have friends.”
“Good friends? They look out for you?”
“Yeah. I’ve known them a month and they’re already better friends than any of my old ones were. They’re the one reason I’m glad I live in the Outer Banks now. I love them, weird as it sounds. And they love me.”
You went back to the motel he’d rented you rooms in, and sat on your bed, opening your phone and staring at the many missed calls from your mom. You tapped the call button, holding the phone to your ear.
It rang twice, then the line opened with a small crackle.
“Hey Mom.”
“Sweetie,” you could almost hear her relieved smile, “How are you?”
“I’m… uh, I’m good. I’m settling in. How’s Chris?”
“That’s great! He’s good, we’re good. Thank you. For calling back.”
“Why did you call, Mom?”
“I wanted to apologise. I’m so sorry. What I did - it tore us apart, and it was unforgivable. And now I see the situation you’re in and I wish I could take it back.”
“But you can’t, Mom. You destroyed my life, and you called to kill tow birds with one stone - pretend to seem like the caring mom you proved yourself not to be, and to clear your own conscience. Well fuck you. You really wanna know how I’m doing? I haven’t talked to any of my close friends from Cali because you made us move so suddenly that they thought I’d hid it from them. They all think I’m a slut, and I couldn’t win the fucking court case because of you! You left Dad high and dry, for a rich dude you’d known for a month!”
“Y/N,” she sighed through the phone, and you noticed that your cheeks were wet and stiff with tears.
“No, Mom. Don’t call again. Don’t try to contact me. I thought this would help get me closure, but your apology is just an excuse! I - I don’t ever wanna talk to you again.”
“I love you.”
You hung up, falling back onto the motel bed, and letting the sobs shake your body with such force that you couldn’t breathe.
--
You got back late the next day, when the sky was falling into darker hues every minute. You were tired, but you missed your friends. You dropped your bag off in the hallway and headed straight over the road to the Chateau. You found them in the hammocks. “Hey.”
Kie squealed, jumping up and tackling you in a hug that made you stumble back.
“Missed you,” she smiled, “had to deal with these shitheads by myself.”
“Sorry.” you smiled, climbing into the hammock with her as the boys protested to her insults.
“You missed some good waves.” John B commented.
“You guys know I don’t surf.” You chuckled. “I’m sure they were great though.”
“But you should surf.” JJ said, sitting on the other end of the hammock, both of your feet thrown over his. “How’s your brother?”
“I’m good without that hobby.” you laughed. “He’s good, enjoying college. What were y’all talking about?”
“How JJ believes in the gold.” Kie smirked.
“Oh my God, JJ, do you really believe?” John B joked.
“Totally. Wait, are we talking about four mil?”
“Four hundred mil.” You corrected, speaking softly, your anger at him seemingly having dissipated.
“I’m gonna dream about shipwrecks.” he rolled onto his side, as you and Kie giggled.
“Goodnight, Bird!” You laughed.
“Goodnight, Birdshit!” Pope mocked, making you all laugh.
“I love you guys.” You muttered, feeling Kie cuddle into you.
--
You stood at the bow, sunglasses on as you watched the waves roll out in front of you, and the wind bite at your skin, whipping your hair out behind you.
“Alright JJ, pin it here.” John B called, and you turned around, hopping off the front of the boat as JJ responded.
“Roger that, x marks the spot.” you walked to Kie, helping her with the wire.
“Alright, ladies and gentlemen.” John B pulled out the ROV, “To going full kook.” he plopped the drone in the water, high-fiving you as he walked back to Pope. Kie started feeding the wire through, and you sat down next to JJ in the cockpit, watching how he pouted when you stole his seat. “Alright, JJ, we’re right over it, ten seconds northwest.”
“Got it!” he repeated the instructions as he followed them. “Why are you in here?”
“I wanted to sit down.” You countered, swivelling the chair from side to side.
“One hundred feet!” Kie called.
“You could sit down outside.” he nodded to the benches outside.
“But then you wouldn’t get the pleasure of my company!”
“I wouldn’t call it a pleasure.” he joked.
“Two hundred feet.” Kie’s call came.
You put your hand to your chest in fake offence, “C’mon man, you’re breakin’ my heart!”
“Sorry, bro.” he said, adjusting the steering.
“Three hundred feet.”
“JJ why did you push me away when I kissed you?”
“Y/N, while I would love to have this conversation, now is not the time.”
“Four hundred feet.” Kie looked down, “The tide’s turning.”
“Hey JJ?” John B called out.
“Yup.” You responded for him, swivelling the seat towards John B.
“Ten seconds, easy. South-southeast.”
You swivelled back around, repeating the instructions and ignoring the  “Yeah, Y/N, I heard.” as he turned aggressively, and you shuffled the chair back.
“JJ, twenty seconds midspeed alright? South.” John B called.
You stood up, the sudden change in weather and instructions causing anxiety to gnaw at your stomach. You grabbed a sweater off the side, pulling it over your head to keep the wind from giving you hypothermia. You went to Pope and John B, hoping to make yourself useful.
“What’s going on?” You asked, looking at the storm clouds.
“700 feet!” Kie called, and Pope turned to you.
“A little bad weather, we’re fine.” He assured you, and you nodded slowly, knowing he could see you were still anxious.
You stumbled to the side as the waves crashed into the boat, JJ looking back at you, concerned. “This is not ‘dead calm’.” you mumbled as JJ peered out at the clouds.
“JJ, hold it steady!” John B called.
“900!” Kie called.
“JJ, we’re gonna turtle in this storm.” You said, watching the panic in your friends, as you fumbled with the sleeves. “Can I help with anything?”
“Sort the speed.” He said, moving so you could control the meter.
“920!” Kie yelled.
“Crank it north by northwest! Ten seconds!” John B called, panic clear in his voice.
“John B there’s too much current, we’re gonna lose it!” Kie yelled.
“South southwest JJ! Hard!” John B yelled, and you pushed the meter, turning quickly, working in tandem with the blonde boy.
“Half speed! Steady at this bearing, JJ!” He steered by his instructions as you slowed the boat.
“960!”
“980!”
You heard Pope yelling that you were at the bottom, and John B yelling for JJ to be steady, calling for quarter-speed. You slowed the boat again, both you and JJ looking at where the others crowded around the monitor.
“See anything?” JJ called.
You could see them mumbling, and their faces falling. They had found the boat, but came up empty. You helped JJ steer as they swept the wreck twice more, before running out of battery. You could hear Pope trying to bring the optimism back, but you knew it was futile.
“Guys, we’ve been through it three times, there’s nothing there.” you called.
“Shut up!” Kie shouted back, and you sighed, dejected.
“What? She’s right!” JJ backed you. You pulled your hand through your hair, taking the speed controls back off JJ.
“The gold could be buried, we don’t know!” Kie shouted, searching for something hopeful to say.
“If it was there, it would have been found on the metal detector, okay?” John B turned to face the group again. “Somebody beat us to it.”
You could see JJ getting frustrated, the sight of his best friend in pain clearly getting to him. “Or it was never there.” he muttered. You sighed, turning to check on your friends, who were riddled with frustration and anger. Eventually, you decided to go home.
When you eventually got back to the island, Kie pulled you aside.
“Are you and JJ alright again?”
“Honestly? I don’t know. Even if he doesn’t see me like that, I don’t wanna lose him. I talked to my brother about it, and I just feel like we should at least try to be good again.”
“You know we all love you either way right? And JJ cares about you, you guys have got to sort it out, you may have only known each other for less than a month, but I honestly can’t imagine how he’d be if he fucked things up with you.”
“You sure about that?”
“‘Course. Anyway, you’re coming out with me, Pope and JJ, maybe JB,  tomorrow anyway.”
“I am?”
“Movie night down in the Kook Green.”

I cannot hide what’s on my mind
I feel it burning deep inside
A passion crime to take what’s mine
Let us start living for today
“You are a worthless piece of shit.”
“Shut up!”
“Your mama knew!”
“Shut up!”
JJ’s fist strikes his bedroom door, although he wishes it were his father’s face. It probably wouldn’t be as painful, and he’d feel good about it. But his dad would retaliate like he always did, and JJ’s face couldn’t handle another black eye or split lip. Luke had already done a number on his face twenty minutes prior.
Luke turns up the volume of whatever rock song is playing throughout the house, and JJ clutches the sides of his head, digging his palms into his temples, the thoughts in his head drowning out the song. What the hell was he listening to anyway? Judas Priest? Black Sabbath? He had no fucking clue.
He should be used to it all by now. The loud music. The constant drinking. The verbal violence. The physical abuse. The mental manipulation. It’s been going on for years. And there’s no way to stop it.
The cut on JJ’s lip burns as a salty tear mixes with the dried blood. He drags his fingers across the bottom of his lip, wincing. Thirty grand in restitution for a boat he didn’t even sink. He should’ve seen the punch coming, anticipated it as soon as he slid in the passenger’s seat of the beat up pick up truck. But it happened so fast, over and over, until Luke’s knuckles were painted red with blood.
He doesn’t regret taking the blame, though. Even if he now has to scramble to come up with thirty thousand dollars, JJ’s glad that he did the right thing for once in his life. Pope was a good kid, had too much to lose. But JJ? He had nothing.
The music dies down in the living room and JJ peers toward the door, heart hammering against his chest as he waits for Luke to bust into his room. His fists are balled by his sides, ready to attack if necessary, but the door never opens.
JJ takes it upon himself to crack open the door, just enough for him to peer out into the living room and see Luke passed out on the sofa. Empty beer bottles are scattered along the coffee table and a pill bottle is just barely sitting in Luke’s hand that dangles off the couch. Just another typical Tuesday in the Maybank household.
It’s times like these JJ wishes he wasn’t an only child. Although he’s glad no one else is subjected to Luke’s abuse, the house gets lonely. Talking to his father is impossible. His mother is nowhere to be found, and he resents her for leaving him to live with a monster, to fend for his life.
He could always talk to his friends, though.
Ah, scratch that. They’re all busy tending to their own lives.
Pope’s in and out of scholarship interviews.
Kiara’s working overtime at the Wreck.
John B is glued to Sarah Cameron’s hip.
But there’s one more person left. One person that would always make time for him. One person he could confide in no matter the circumstances.
JJ retrieves his phone from the back pocket of his shorts, typing out a quick message.
Can you meet me at the dock?
He smiles as your name pops up on the screen, promising to meet him in ten minutes.
~
You watch from afar as JJ stands at the edge of the dock throwing rocks into the bay. The sun has begun to set, the sky now painted a light orange and pink, and there’s a slight chill in the air thanks to the open water. Tugging the sleeves of your hoodie down to cover your hands, you shuffle quietly along the wooden boards.
JJ’s body instantly relaxes when your arms circle his middle, forehead resting against his back. The cologne on his body mixed with his natural scent is what keeps you still against him until he turns around to hold you. He needs this hug. You can just tell.
“I owe thirty grand for sinking Topper’s boat.” His voice is defeated, arms limp around your body.
Wherever trouble was, JJ found it. He was always getting into scuffles with the teenagers on the other side of the island, parents turned their noses down at him, and the cops had no problem blaming JJ for crimes he didn’t commit. The boy was an easy target.
You shake your head, refusing to believe his story, but asking the question anyway. “Why’d you do it?”
JJ pulls away, stuffing his hands in his pockets, eyes downcast on the dock. He doesn’t want to tell you the truth, but you have a guess as to who he’s protecting. “Just sick of everyone treating us differently because we live on the poor side of the island. Money isn’t everything, but it’s all these people on Figure Eight know.”
He’s not wrong. The rich kids on Figure Eight can’t separate fantasy from reality. They’ve never known struggle. They’ve always had designer clothes, food on the table, a roof over their heads, plus the perks. Motorcycles. Boats. Cars. Status. Friends. Opportunities. So much more than the average person could afford, or wish for.
And you were one of them.
It’s a wonder how you and JJ became friends. You knew of his hatred for rich kids before you’d even met him. But JJ saw something in you. You weren’t like the rest of them. You had a pure heart, kind soul. Being rich wasn’t a personality trait for you.
“I just,” Dragging a hand through his hair, JJ gazes at you sadly. His frown tugs at your heart. “I just want to get away, you know? I can’t hide it, but I’ve had thoughts about leaving the Cut, the OBX in general.”
Now that’s something you never would of thought would come out of JJ’s mouth. He lived and breathed the Outerbanks. He didn’t know anything else.
“Where would you go?”
He takes a seat on the end of the dock, feet dangling just above the water. You join him, sitting close, head on his shoulder, toes skimming the cool water.  “Paris. England. The Yucatan,” JJ chuckles, nudging you. “That’s long term.”
“What about now?”
JJ exhales, thinking hard. “Maybe Florida. Or Texas. California, possibly. I want to go somewhere warm, like OBX, with a beach and some palm trees,” JJ looks down at the top of your head, resting his cheek on your hair. Your presence calms him. “And I’d take you with me.”
He knocks the breath out of you. You were never one to plan for the future, but the future is all JJ can think about it. And he sees you in his future, wherever he decides to be. How could you possibly tell him that the life that was destined for you would always be in the Outerbanks, breaking his heart in the process?
“Don’t you want to start living? The way we want to?” JJ asks softly, fingertips grazing your leg. Goosebumps rise on your skin at his intimate touch.
“I already am,” you say, considering his words. “My life is here, JJ. I can’t leave it behind.”
“No, it’s not,” JJ retorts instantaneously, voice unwavering. “This life you’re living? It’s not yours. It’s your parents’.”
Bringing your knees to your chin, you reposition yourself to look at JJ, whose staring out at the bay, blue eyes scanning the water, tuffs of blonde hair dancing in the breeze. It’s the first time that night you really took notice of his face. Dried blood dots the corner of his mouth, and a purple bruise rings around his eye. There’s a tick in his jaw and his fingers drum quickly on his leg. He’s tense. “How so?”
He’s never been anything other than blunt. He hides nothing, letting you know how he thinks, what he feels. “Because you don’t stand up to them. They drag you to yacht parties on the weekend because you’ve never told them who your real friends are. They think Susie Milligan and Delia Pratton are your best friends, except they have no idea that you can’t stand them and would rather be surfing with Kie and John B. They make you stay in and study your dad’s old college textbooks, convinced you’re going to be the world’s greatest attorney, but you complain to Pope that the material is dry and you’ll never be happy working as a prosecutor.” Pulling a cigarette from his pocket and then lighting it, JJ takes a drag, puffing out the smoke before turning to face you. “You let them dictate what should be your life. What is it that youwant to do? You never talk about the future, but one day it’ll be here, and it’s sooner than you think.”
His eyes are focused as he waits for you to consider his question. The truth is, you know what you want, but you’ve never said it aloud. No one ever cared to ask, except for now. Except for JJ.
“I want to be a marine biologist,” you’re confident in your answer, and it leads you to spill more. A weight lifts off your shoulders. “I want to go to school in Hawaii or Australia and learn about animals, nature, sea life. I want to surf, fish, and wear flowers in my hair, embrace my free spirit.”
JJ’s smile encourages you. Opening up to him is so easy because he understands. He listens. And he wants the same freedom as you do. The only difference is, JJ will chase after his dreams.
“I want to learn how to play guitar, climb a mountain, run a marathon, learn Chinese, ride in a hot air balloon,” you take a second to catch your breath, feel the chill of the breeze on your legs. “I want to find love. Maybe get married, have a kid or two. Adopt five kittens. Build my own home with a pool that has a waterfall. I want to try escargot, visit a rainforest, and see the Northern Lights. I want so many things, JJ.”
“Then let’s do it,” JJ says, standing and pulling you to your feet. A smile lights up his face as he grabs your hands in his. It’s the happiest you’ve seen him in the last hour, but it contrasts with what you feel inside. “Let’s start living.”
~
Never gonna change my mind
We can leave it all behind
Nothin’s gonna stop us
No not this time
“Hawaii, huh?”
You look up from your soup. Kiara leans against the bar top, watching you curiously. JJ has gone off to the bathroom, the perfect opportunity for Kiara to grill you with questions.
“He seems pretty adamant,” she remarks, flipping hair over her shoulder. “What’d you say?”
The spoon clinks against the metal bowl as you set it down, dabbing your lips with a napkin. “I didn’t answer.”
“Don’t you think you should?” Kiara asks, playing with the beads on her bracelet. “From what JJ said, he seems pretty sure that wherever he goes, you’re following.”
“Oh, he’s set on us moving to the west coast, but I can’t just leave the OBX,” you counter, shoulders slumping. “My life is here.”
“Then why did you tell him all the things you wanted to do if you don’t ever plan on doing them with him?”
The million-dollar question.
“Because I knew he’d listen,” you say quietly. “I didn’t think he was serious about us leaving together, though. We’re sixteen, Kie. What sixteen year olds do you know drop everything and leave their home behind? And besides,” your laugh comes out strangled, “My parents would never let me leave. You know how they are. They don’t even like that I’m friends with JJ. They think he’s trouble, a bad influence. How do you think they’d react if I just up and left with him?”
Kiara leans in close, whispering, “That’s why you don’t tell them.”
You roll your eyes as Kie laughs. “I’m not going to change my mind on this, Kiara.”
Her face turns serious as she chews on the corner of her lip. The gears turn in her head as she contemplates. “Would it matter if I said JJ’s in love with you?”
Your eyes roam her face, waiting for a laugh, a smile, a teasing wink, but her composure is kept intact as she stares at you. Your face falters. “He—what?”
She nods. “What boy asks a girl to travel the world with him if he’s not in love with her?”
Color creeps up your neck, mouth dry, heart beating irregularly. Your body is jelly, almost sliding off the bar stool, but you slink back further into the chair, hands gripping the arm rests. “Are you sure?”
“If I was a gambler, I’d bet it all. That’s how sure I am.”
“I—no,” you dig in your purse for some cash, slapping the bills down in haste. “I’m either going to disappoint JJ or my parents, and I can’t disappoint my family. So, no, JJ being in love with me doesn’t change anything,” you say, exhaling a breath. “I’m not going with him.”
“Well, that’s good to know.”
Kiara’s eyes expand, and you freeze. JJ’s boots pad against the floor as he pushes through the front door, angrily stomping into the night. You thank Kiara for the dinner before rushing outside to chase a visibly irritated JJ.
“JJ, wait!” Your hand clamps down on his shoulder, spinning him around. The look on his face is disheartening. You try to cradle his cheeks, something you normally did to comfort him, but he pushes your hands away. “Please, stop.”
“You were never planning to come with me, were you?” JJ questions, twirling a few of the rings on his fingers. “You were just…what? Entertaining me?”
“JJ, my life is here, in the OBX!” The words that use to flow perfectly off your tongue don’t even sound right anymore. Part of you doesn’t believe them. “I can’t just leave it all behind. And my parents…God, JJ, they’d never let me go with you. I mean, we’re so young.”
JJ nods, although he doesn’t understand. He knows you. He knows your heart. He knows where you really stand. But he can’t persuade you anymore than he’s tried. “I’m taking my dad’s boat and I am leaving tomorrow. I’m getting out of here because I know what I want and nothing is going to stop me.”
JJ turns, and your heart squeezes as you watch him leave. Your fingers twitch, begging to reach out to him. This can’t be it. He can’t be leaving you. “Is it true?”
He stops in his tracks, glancing over his shoulder.  “Is what true?”
You choke back a soft cry, voice croaking. “Are you in love with me?”
JJ faces you, staring absentmindedly. He wants nothing more than to hold you in his arms, kiss your breath away. But he keeps his distance, shoving his hands back into his pockets, whispering, “It doesn’t matter, because it wouldn’t be enough, anyway.”
~
Back home, you’re surprised to see your parents still awake, chatting softly at the island in the kitchen. You hastily wipe away any leftover tears before they can hound you with questions.
“You’re home late,” says your father, giving you a look. He’s the stricter parent of the two. “I assume you have a good reason?”
You keep the conversation short. “I got caught up talking to JJ. I lost track of time.”
Your mother wrinkles her nose, wine sloshing in her glass as she takes a sip. “How many times have we told you to stay away from that boy, Y/N? He’s trouble.”
“He’s not trouble,” you fire back, wishing you had come up with a lie instead of telling them the truth. “You’re just judgmental.”
“That’s enough,” your father snaps. He runs a hand over his tired face. Being an attorney has aged him ten years. And to think he wanted to send you down the same dreadful path. “I’m having lunch tomorrow with DA Lance Nicholas. I figured you could come along, ask him some questions--.”
“No.”
Your mother stares at you quizzically. “No?”
“Is tomorrow a bad time?” asks your father, loosening his tie. “I’m supposed to meet with him next week as well, if that’s better for you.”
You feel the rage building up inside of you as you remember JJ’s words. You let them dictate what should be your life. What is it that you want to do? “No, dad, there will never be a time that’s good for me to meet the DA, because I don’t want to meet him. I don’t want to be a lawyer.”
You’re sure they’ll yell, give you a hard time, but the laughs that come out of their mouths are surprising. You don’t understand why they’re laughing, but you’re determine to stand your ground, speak up.
“You’ve never once asked me what I wanted to do with my life.”
“Well, yes, because—.”
“Because you planned it for me.”
Your mom glances at your dad, unsure of how to continue the conversation. “Sweetie--.”
“I’m not going to law school,” The light dims in your father’s eyes, face growing red as your tone grows serious. He’s silent, but it doesn’t scare you. “Because I want to be a marine biologist.”
“Honey, listen,--.”
“I want to travel, see what the world has to offer me. I’m tired of being your puppet. I’m tired of pretending to like Susie and Delia. I’m tired of going to stupid yacht parties with out of touch rich people. I’m tired of reading college textbooks about a career I don’t even want while I’m still in high school. This is my life, and you don’t get to choose how I live it.”
Your mom speaks up after what feels like an hour of silence. Her eyes are full of sorrow, voice low, disapproving. “What happened to you? You’re so…outspoken.”
“It’s that damn Maybank kid,” your dad’s forceful voice cuts right through you. He slams his fist on the counter, startling your mom. You stand your ground, unflinching. “I always knew he’d corrupt you sooner or later.”
“Corrupt me?” A laugh escapes you. He can’t be serious. “He helped me, dad. He taught me to stand up for myself, which is what I’m doing right now. He taught me that there’s a life outside of our world in Figure Eight. JJ helped me realize that I don’t belong here,” your mother’s face drops. Guilt briefly flickers across your face. “I belong with him, wherever he goes. Whether it be California or Texas or Hawaii. I belong with him.”
“You are sixteen years old,” your father reminds, looking at you in disgust. “You have no clue what you’re talking about or what you are doing. Go on, get out of my sight.”
You shake your head, turning your back on your parents. It didn’t matter what they said. They wouldn’t be able to stop you from chasing your dreams, from living your life the way you wanted to. They could say you were too young, too naïve, until they were blue in the face. But you know what you want, and no one, especially not your parents, would stop you.
~
So take your hand in mine
It’s ours tonight
This is our rebel love song
Staring down at the note in your hand, you exhale a sigh before dropping it on the kitchen counter. You sign it with a kiss, letting your family know you love them, before venturing outside, quietly closing the door behind you.
The last night in your house was spent packing, constantly checking that your bedroom door was locked to keep the helicopter parents away. There wasn’t much you could fit into the duffel bag, but you squeezed as much as you could, the contents varying from clothing to toiletries to small mementos you didn’t want to leave behind.
The plan was to surprise JJ at the dock. Tugging your duffel higher onto your shoulder, you walk with a content smile.
When you reach the dock, your heart rises to your throat. JJ stands with his back to you, one foot on the dock, the other in the boat. He’s ready to take off, and your legs break out into a sprint, daring him to leave you behind. “JJ!”
The voice makes his ears perk up. He turns, wide-eyed, smile brighter than the gleaming Carolina sun. JJ’s heart swells as he watches the girl he loves run after him, one hand waving frantically in the air, the other tugging the bag higher on her arm.
“JJ, wait!”
But he’s not going anywhere. He’d never go anywhere without you.
You drop the bag onto the dock, launching yourself into JJ’s body. He wobbles slightly, arms coming around your middle, pulling you as far into his chest as you’ll go. You fit perfectly.
“You came,” JJ breathes into your hair, kissing your forehead. The soft pecks are quick, friendly.
It’s not enough for you, though.
You grab his cheeks, pressing your mouth to his, hard. Your heart reacts, beating wildly. The feeling in your body, the sensation you get from kissing JJ, it feels like sunshine. Warm. Blissful. Happy.
There’s no hesitation as JJ kisses you back. His hand creeps up your spine, pressing you impossibly closer to him, almost as if he’s testing to see if you’re real.
It’s all real. You, the kiss, the moment.
He pulls away, slightly breathless. His eyes flicker to the dandelion lying on his drawstring bag, and a smile tugs at his parted lips. He’d picked it for you on his way to the dock, just in case.
“It’s true,” JJ says, reaching down to tenderly pick the flower. Doe-eyed, you watch as he tucks the dandelion behind your ear, shielding the stem with a few strands of your hair. “I am so deeply in love with you.”
“And you were going to leave without ever letting me know.”
“A part of me hoped you wouldn’t let me leave without you,” JJ answers, helping you settle into the boat.
“You’re right,” you smile. “I couldn’t let you leave without knowing I’m in love with you, too.”
The kiss that follows is better than the first. It’s softer, more intimate, and it feels like a rainbow.
It completes him.
It completes you.
After grabbing your bag from the dock, you help JJ untie the boat before joining him at the wheel. The boat rumbles to life, sailing slowly across the open bay. A new life is just in the distance.
“You ready?” JJ asks. There’s nothing in his eyes other than hope, nothing in his grin other than happiness.
Taking his hand, you smile. “I am now.”

They’re gonna get on a boat and there’s a thunderstorm? What demon did they piss off because they have the worst luck, I swear. God the luck thing needs it own post man because damn. And that is a huge boat.
“I- I don’t know how to...drive it.” I love Nate. I relate to his humor.
Hello, Roxanne, I love your accent.
Side Note: Colby’s random bandana around his arm is random.
“The last time this happened to me, Roxanne, I threw up in an air plane.” God, I just love Nate. His one-liners are great. If 25x25 was a TV show, Nate would be my favorite character, no lie (Sorry Sam, Colby, Justin, and Alex)
Captain Sex Magnet omg, glad you’re not lacking the confidence department there Colbs. Of all the things Colby is know for he goes for “Sex Magnet.” Why not like, Captain Emo or something? 😂
Will the Sam’s nipples jokes ever die? Probably not. It’s been years now.
First challenge looks fun, but they hit that water hard man, maybe it’s just the sound effect but it looks painful. But nobody’s hurt and I’m probably being dramatic lol.
Side Note: Looks like Sam has graduated from his little red swim trunks
Aw Justin got sick, poor Justin. He’s so positive though, ready to get back at it. I appreciate that boy.
I love how Justin and Nate do these like majestic swan dives and Sam and Colby just fucking SPLASH. And then they keep falling off the board together.
Oh, those are some dark clouds. Sam’s right, they look evil.
Flawless transition there from thunderstorm to fishing. But at least they didn’t fucking get caught in the storm or anything. Thank god.
“We drink responsibly” HA PAST VIDEOS CALL BULLSHIT YOU ALCOHOLICS
Side Note: Justin is a fast swimmer, damn.
Okay, I’d jump off that cliff. Finally, a 25x25 challenge I’d actually attempt.
Serious props to Sam for this one because I bet after breaking his back there’s some serious anxiety there for him. Was it stupid? Probably but considerably less stupid than jumping off your roof onto a fucking bean-bag. My GOD that was so fucking stupid.
Justin is a badass. He just goes for it off that first cliff while the others move to a shorter one and then Colby, Nate, and Sam are like Nah Bro and Justin’s like fuck yeah I’ll jump and flip off this literal slippery slope.
I totally zoned out Sam and Colby’s end monologue for what’s next because a) I know what’s next lol and b) Nate it just messing with his sunglasses and necklace and totally taking my attention.
As always, gotta give the cinematography and editing some love because they are awesome. That one shot of Sam underwater after having just jumped off the cliff and the voice over? Masterpiece. Wanted more areal shots to see the island, but I mean I’d be worried about losing the drone to the ocean to I see why they probably didn’t do that.
Fun Video! On to part 2!
Part 2:  EXPLORING ABANDONED MILITARY SCHOOL (stranded)
Ah, the return of the XPLR thumbnail too. Shocked faces and an arrow pointing to nothing. Wish they would’ve done a “standing in front of *abandoned place* with our arms out” one too, but the scared on is fine lol.
“WHAT”S UP GUYS IT’S SAM AND COLBY” *music plays* “TODAY WE ARE-”
Oh, the sudden wave of nostalgia that gave me for no reason, wow. I didn’t know how much I missed the old videos until this one.
What I didn’t miss? The amount of freaking anxiety they give me. Like this whole video felt like I was there with them, that’s the level of anxiety I had.
They are so like worst case scenario guys too, like I get it, but come on. If it was light outside would you be as freaked out by the other people on the island? Probably not.
I guess that’s all part of the experience though, haha.
This place was really cool. I always think like, yeah, the jungle seems fun but then I remember the fucking spiders and shit that are there and I’m like 100% Nope From Me.
Side Note: I don’t know how people live in Australia, tbh, that place is trying to kill you.
Colby touching all the animals. He just likes small, strange creatures, I guess.
Also they better be careful with those crabs they will fuck you up.
The smaller sand crabs I’ve actually seen in person before! I saw them when my family took a vacation to Florida and they were on the beach at night. They bury themselves in the sand like super-fast but my dad was able to catch a few so we could see them up close and it was cool! They range from really tiny, like dime tiny, to like tennis shoe big or bigger.
I just felt so at home with this video. Like the *LISTEN and the sound effects and the camera angles and the running. This video feels like it just catered to old XPLR fans lol.
The ending though, I was so unsure of what was going to happen. I was like “are they gonna end up stranded and leave us on a cliffhanger? Where did the boat go? What the fuck?”
And then turns out Justin just freaked us out for the laughs. Man, I love that guy.
I am excited for more of these videos. Like, don’t get me wrong, I love the new 25x25 style but it feels really good to see some of the older elements come into play too. I hope Sam and Colby continue to edit at least these next few videos.

Nobody between the ages of 18 and 40 lives in the Florida Keys by choice. You are either born here, or brought here by your parents. Nobody chooses to live here except millionaires and retired people.
When I was in high school, our yearbook had normal superlatives like Best Dressed and Class Clown and Most Likely to Become President, but we also had Most Likely to Get Stuck on the Rock, meaning they'd never leave the island. This award invariably went to rich kids whose parents bought them their own boat as well as a car when they turned 16, the kind of people who WANT to stay here because they don't need to work. They're on vacation 24/7/365. They wear long sleeve Ron Jon shirts and board shorts and wraparound sunglasses. They drive big white pickups with American flags and Trump stickers and illegal train horns and no mufflers. They throw their trash into the water. They catch fish and lobsters that are too small. They boys are all cops and the girls are all nurses, you know the people I'm talking about.
Well, I'm stuck on the rock and I'm dirt poor, so there's an exception to every rule.
I'm thinking of petitioning the school board to retroactively award me that title; our 10 year reunion is coming up in 2024, so I need to start putting the pressure on them now! The squeaky wheel gets the grease!

The Old man & The Seaby Ernest HemingwayIt’s one of the classic from American literature, it fetched him Nobel and Pulitzer and took his works to new heights.Story: Santiago, an old fisher man at a fishing hamlet on Cuban coast had been struck by ‘salao’, worst form of luck, haven't had a single catch in 84 days in a row and his young apprentice had to abandon him. But he still ventures into the sea the next day and goes deep into the blues and had to fight for a night and day to harpoon out a large marlin and ties it to side of his skiff. Unfortunately, the sharks surround him — feast his labour, his brother(fish). Later the boy wakes up him in his hut, exclaiming the villagers are awe struck by his catch and quarreling for its head — tired old-man goes to sleep, to dream about the lions of the African beach.Thirdeye: It’s ostensibly a very simple story, but is typical example of author’s ice berg theory: as only one eighth is visible the writer must leave the remaining for the reader to interpret and discover. For me it was ocean geography: Gulf stream, Florida strait, sea & land breeze, bio-luminance and it explores the rich fauna, flying fish, cod, dolphins, sea-birds etc. Moreover it’s story about Universal brotherhood, oldman respects & bonds with the nature and the globeThe old man and the sea,Is a short novel by Ernest Hemingway, published in 1952 and awarded the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. The story depicts a fisherman Santiago, who  engaged in a battle with the great fish marlin,  to drag him up.The story begins with this old man who fished alone in a skiff, who had went eighty four days without catching a fish and the narrator illustrate this as salao, which is the worst  form of luck..Throughout  the reading  we can  observe the  life of a fisherman, the relation between a fish and him,  how he hook the fish,  tasks related to fishing and his ardent connection with the boy ( his apprentice ).If you read this book,  you are able to gain the  vast  knowledge of  fishes, boats and i would  like to refer this book as a oceanography. The great determination and optimism of an old man, who endures a lot of pain and difficulties throughout his life  is  to be emphasized. In the amid portion of this book,  perhaps you could feel tedious as it deals with the interpretation of way of fishing, but at the disclosure part it's  very astonishing.I would like to quote some lines that hit my heart.."He had taken down the picture of his dead wife because it made him feel lonely & it now lay on the shelf underneath his clean shirt.” To me this symbolises her purity to him & also his love."You can kill a man but u can't defeat him ".This shows his  courage and determination towards the hurdles he had faced. This is a best written short novel and no page of this beautiful work could have been done better or differently, and to be read and stored in the portmanteau of lifetime belongings, only to be extracted and read again during difficult times….
