[Review] Iraroji VOW (DS)

A solid DS nonogram puzzler with some surprising connections.

While on a holiday away I chilled out with this nonogram game, and continued it at home (it's quite substantial). Nonograms are known by many names: Picross to Nintendo fans; Hudson's games call it Illustlogic, short for illustration logic. This one shortens it further, using the first two Japanese characters of each word. I don't know what the VOW means but this is the follow-up to Nanpure VOW on DS, nanpure being another name for sudoku.

The funny ha-ha joke behind the development of this DS puzzle game is that it's made by FromSoftware, they of the Souls and King's Field and Armoured Core and what have you. But of course they've made lots of kinds of games: whimsical fantasy adventures, cutesy platformers, experimental mobile phone games, visual novels... so why not a nonogram game, especially when the actual puzzle design is handled by Conceptis, a longtime puzzle-creating firm. Their name for this kind of puzzle is Pic-a-Pix, and they're involved with the indie releases of the same name that I've played on 3DS and Vita.

Iraroji VOW understandably feels similar to those games. There's a mix of traditional and coloured puzzles, with sizes ranging from 15x15 to 25x25. The huge size means sometimes squinting a little to see the clue numbers, the column ones having been pushed to the top screen so that the gigantic grids can fill the lower screen. With 300 in total and the puzzles taking longer because they're bigger, this game kept me busy for a good long time.

The strength of these games on DS is the availability of stylus touch controls... but only if it's implemented well. You're only able to switch between marking, crossing, and erasing with a touch button, so I found it too fiddly. Luckily the button controls are quite good, with A, X, and B being dedicated to these respective functions which can always overwrite other marks. There's no additional hint function or auto-checking, but you can toggle whether the clues fade out as you solve them to make it harder, or whether they alert you when you make a mistake. While the difficulty level is quite high and there are few crutches, there are also no penalties for time taken or making mistakes. Screen wrap is a nice feature and unusually there is an infinitely available undo and redo function.

My main gripe is with visibility: some clue numbers are hard to make out on the larger grids, colour choices can blend in, and worst of all the selection cursor garishly highlights the whole row and column. There's also lots of visual themes to choose from, but most of them were too visually busy so I stuck with one of the plainer ones. On the note of presentation, I'm pretty sure that there's only one song that plays during puzzles which seems utterly bonkers; the vast majority of my time was spent with the volume off though. The single song is upbeat and jazzy but would surely drive anyone to distraction pretty quick.

The most unique feature of the game though is one that's difficult for non-Japanese speakers to appreciate. From what I can tell, there was some element of the development process where members of the Japanese public took photos of funny or unusual signs or text and sent them in, prompting a snarky reply [these may have been sourced from an external body]. These in some way inspired the puzzles that went into the game. So you get a blurred image and a brief comment as a sort of teaser, then on solving it the context and commentary are revealed. The puns and quirks can resist translation so this aspect is pretty import-unfriendly, but you can still solve the puzzles as normal and have a good time.

One feature I was unable to review is the multiplayer, which requires other connected copies of the game and maybe even the late Nintendo WFC. How does it work? Does it have unique puzzles? Who knows! Considering Jupiter only started implementing co-op on their Switch Picross games and only for local play, Iraroji VOW in 2007 was way ahead of the game in this regard.

Conceptis's puzzle pictures can look a bit wonky or simplistic at times, but at least they're clearly depicting something recognisable, and there were some impressive ones in here. The large sizes led to some interesting subjects, and some marathon play sessions. Of the many nonogram games on DS (many exclusive to Japan), this was a good one to knock off the backlog, and especially fascinating when I discovered the connection to the Pic-a-Pix series. Maybe From should start making smaller projects like this again!

Murder Mystery aka Jenna reviews a Sam and Colby video again

I gotta say this one was the most interesting as far a things they captured. Like the orbs was something I’ve never seen in on of their videos before so I thought that was cool.

Plus just it being the Lizzie Borden house brings a whole other layer to it. They’ve investigated place before, yes, but no where where something so brutal has happened in such a small space. I think that has something to say about the activity.

I might be nitpicky, but I didn’t really care for the medium Amanda all that much. Like, you can tell she’s a tiktoker and she seems younger than then, idk I just got that vibe. Like almost the whole video it felt like she was just being like “Look at me! Look at me! Look what I can do!” Which I get it, if I had that power and was able to help them capture stuff I’d want to but after a while it got kind of annoying, I guess? Personally, I wouldn’t care to see her back in any future videos.

I’ve never met a medium, maybe that’s just how they are, I don’t know.

Also did Kat and Stas seem quiet in this video to anyone else?

I never heard about the kids in the house so I thought that was interesting to learn about. I suppose that gets glossed over with all the murder and stuff 😂

A lot of people in the comments were saying Colby has something attached to him because the kids were afraid of him. I don’t know whether I believe that or not, but it is a good idea to get cleansed after visiting places like these. Especially since Amanda sensed/saw a few demons there. (also the comments seemed to love Amanda so maybe it is just me)

I find it really interesting how Colby, Kat, and Stas all have these reactions to ghost presences, like feeling lightheaded or getting emotional or just having a certain feeling about a room or place, and Sam just...doesn’t.

He’s certainly more of the skeptic between the duo so that could be why, but it’s interesting to me that he (or his soul as my spiritual aunt would say) isn’t open to things like that.

The tour guide guy was a gem, he was so fun to listen to and I’d love to have a tour done by him if I ever go there.

As for the other caretaker lady, she was a little creepier. Maybe just the “have fun with the demons” thing gave her that vibe but definitely creepy.

Also for her to say that and then them possibly encounter them?

I wonder if demons like to attach themselves to places like this because of the awful things that happen in them. Like demons feed off of that kind of stuff and if you let them get to you they’re not going to let go.

And as much as I didn’t really care for Amanda, she was right in saying that they shouldn’t mess with that shit. Whether it’s for views or not, that’s just downright stupid.

this hell week was mid at best. i’m not blaming sam and colby tho, i just think their first hell week was really good bc they visited the classic most haunted places and then their first season had a really strong narrative and purpose across all the episodes so it’s difficult to beat that. i’m always excited to see whatever they come out with but when they say “this is the best evidence we’ve ever gotten” on every investigation it’s like Be for real rn…. I hope next season they start to visit more international locations or do longer investigations like stay in one place for a few days

i honestly feel like both hell weeks were average at best. the only reason the first one felt crazy was bc it was first. also, snc hadn't been doing all paranormal last year. they started 2021 out with 25x25, then stopped bc it wasn't gaining views, did paranormal for a hot minute, went to chernobyl, and then did hell week. there had been a long enough pause between content, and i think them going back to the conjuring, alone, added to hell week feeling special. but in reality… it was basically the precursor to what they ended up doing this year. it just felt cooler back then.

but that's not to say that hell week is lame. i think it's fine. i think it's better to not look at it like some monumental season that was supposed to change everything for snc. i think if we look at it as another season, then it's on par.

i'll have more to say about it in my big review of hell week, whenever i get around to writing it this week lol

i think their best season was season two. but at the same time, i don't like to look at their content grouped together, even if that's how they market it. some videos just aren't gonna live up to the hype, that's just realistic. and i do think they try to oversell every video, but… if they just said "oh, this video's fine." i think we would be a bit confused haha

They say necessity is the mother of invention. Or should I say, if you want it, you gotta learn how to make it. Well, this is what happened in a span of hours looking for a channel edit of this door from Ambtions that makes the handle recolorable, that sadly went to the cc void.

This simple (wait did I say simple?!) texture edit of the Simple Door from Ambitions now makes the handle as the 4th CASTable channel, making both sides of the frame as a single channel, while both sides of the door remain separately recolorable.

Available as a default replacement, and of course requires the Ambitions EP. Simply put in Mods\Packages folder to install. You need to edit your already placed door in CAST to see the changes.

Rating: 4/5 stars

Okay like I think this is the comfiest merch that I’ve gotten. (I have the mint koala sweatshirt and the black hoodie with the reflective ghost, for reference.) It’s incredibly soft and almost feels like I’m wearing pajamas, which is nice if I don’t want to put on real clothes but still have to venture out into the real world.

Also, the vinyl logo isn’t stiff at all (which sometimes is an issue, at least for other brands). I usually don’t enjoy vinyl logos cause they can be stiff and don’t allow the shirt to move that much, but this one hardly even feels like vinyl.

The stitching is quite nice, as well. For the most part, it looks really well made and like it would hold up well. The only issue is that there are a few loose threads on the cuff of the sleeve, but I was able to just clip those.

As for sizing, I think it runs a little big. When I got the koala sweatshirt, I got a large and it fit perfectly. So I got a large in this sweatshirt, I was a bit surprised that it was a little more roomy. Not so much that I was drowning in it, but enough to kind of add to the coziness factor.

My only major complaint is that it’s a little thin. The sweatshirt and hoodie I got before had a little bit of a thicker fleece on the inside, but this one isn’t quite as thick. Which isn’t usually an issue, and could be nice on slightly warmer days. But I did get a lot colder than usual when I went out (but bear in mind, it’s 26°F out. However, my other hoodie and sweatshirt have also provided me adequate warmth in similar temperatures without the need for extra layers). So if it really cold out, you should probably put another shirt or two on underneath (which, given the roominess of the sweatshirt, you are able to do that without feeling restricted).

Also, this was $40, so slightly on the expensive side and, while the quality is overall good, I would say it is slightly overpriced, given that I’ve gotten sweatshirts at Walmart with the same quality level, so do with that what you will.

Also, slightly bitter that I got the 25x25 sticker and it’s being shipped separately (and by a different shipping company, but that’s fanjoy for ya 🤷🏻‍♀️). That being said, it did arrive quickly and I think the sticker is coming tomorrow or Tuesday.

So overall, a good buy (though kinda overpriced) and I think this might become my new favorite sweatshirt 😂

Hey a 25x25 review a day late, but that’s their fault for posting on a Thursday. Anyway!

I gotta say I much preferred this one to their last two videos.

Colby the designated driver lol. I would probably trust him to drive that whole way, but I would be extremely nervous the whole time.

Brent did get an upgrade man. I wonder if after SnC went their last time it helped build his revenue a little bit. He did say he gets messages from fans all the time.

Also the animals in this video? Amazing. The bull not liking Colby was hilarious. Apparently larger animals don’t like him as much as Hummingbirds and Bees.

Nate gives me daredevil vibes man. And he seems like a crackhead so that’s a dangerous conversation.

I actually forgot about a lot that happened in the last Cerro Gordo video so it was nice to have a refresher and a new, different video.

Also this place is perfect for good cinematography and it was amazing. Gotta give my usual props to Justin for his amazing camera work.

Sam and Colby, I hate to break it to you but I don’t think you were as cleansed as you thought lol. Ghosts happenings, bad luck.

Nate and Alex being skeptics is a breath of fresh air (as I often say). I love Jake and Corey, again don’t get me wrong, but having the four of them experiencing this stuff without necessarily believing in it is really interesting to watch unfold. And them trying to think of rational explanations instead of jumping straight into panic mode? Amazing.

Like the lights? And the car? That’s crazy. And already similar to the experiences from the last Cerro Gordo video which is interesting and makes me think it’s maybe less bullshit because the happenings are kind of consistent.

That was a fun video! Not too much hauntings, not too much treasure hunting, not too much drinking (in the video, they drank a lot). 

They seem excited about the videos that are coming so I’m excited for them too! Hopefully these videos start to get a little more “back on track” I suppose I would say.

I don’t have too much to say this time. It was a fun video and that’s all I got on that!

So I may be remembering wrong, but Sam did his End of an Era….basically his “I turned 25” video on his personal channel right? And they basically reflected on 25x25. Wasn’t Colby suppose to do the same when he turned 25? Or was that JUST a Sam thing? Maybe I just misunderstood….. I just think it’s weird for them to have The End of an Era video on Sams channel if it was suppose to be meant for like the both of them turning 25..? they basically uploaded "skin" and "end of a era" as their last videos on their personal channels, so i think it was on sam's and not the duos bc that was something sam wanted to post for his last time. also same has done end of the year reviews for a while now so i think that's just his thing to recap the year.

i would have liked to seen colby's perspective on 25x25 and what he did, especially when it comes to skin. but i've made that very apparent lmao
