Tentative rip name: Apotheosis to Heaven

A big part of why I opened up the Request Form, and why I continue to use it for ideas for the blog, is to give me inspiration in areas of SiIvaGunner to which I'm less well versed. There are some games and some rips by extension where I feel completely unable to write anything of substance, because I just lack the needed context for the rip to hit for me - but other times, the form opens my eyes to rabbitholes which I'm all too happy to delve into, through rips like Plantasia 2, mlp racism anthem (comix zone arrange), guess what​?​?​?​?​?​?​?​? and more. I've learned to trust eg_9371's judgement on quality as a requestee, and many parts of his massive catalogue of contributions have shown me quality in areas I'd never thought to look, through rips like kris gaming and Plasmaseeker. And so, I said, you know what? Let's give his endorsement one more shake, and approach a rip I'd initially looked past as not being for me. With that, I hit play on Ascension to Apotheosis - and was met with one of the biggest surprise hits I'd yet heard in the season.

Journey is a game that hits home for a lot of people, yet it was just outside of my periphery when it originally released back in 2012 - I was an 11-year old without a PS3. But even without attachment to Journey, Apotheosis as an ending theme to the game hits home to a degree I wasn't expecting, a swelling orchestral piece going through feelings of anticipation, sorrow, bittersweetness, acceptance, all throughout the span of a 7-minute long composition. The overall word to describe it, of course, would be grand. Yet much the same can be said, on the complete opposite end method, for the song with which Ascension to Apotheosis is being mashed up with, Ascension to Heaven by independant artist Xi. Like with the aforementioned Plasmaseeker, this is a song I know damn near nothing about, most prominently being featured in various Japanese rhythm games but seemingly also having a presence within the Geometry Dash community. Yet despite holding even less of an emotional connection to me than Journey did, it cannot be denied just how impressive of a piece Ascension to Heaven truly is, pairing a pounding electronic percussion with mellow strings and absolutely off-the-rails piano rolls - what feels like three entirely different forms of music and speed, mesh together for a piece with a sound I can only describe with the imagery of a lone bird flying toward the sun.

Loneliness, bittersweetness, strife, failure, perseverance - the emotions distilled into me through these two tracks are ones that were no doubt eons stronger for someone with attachment to either of the works from beforehand, and most definitely strong within ripper Neofall upon creating Ascension to Apotheosis. These are two songs that are both pulsing with emotion, yet accomplish it through very sonically different methods, one through swelling orchestral resonance, and the other through a pounding piano-driven rhythm. Yet that emotional core remains, and through some miracle and no doubt tons of love for the pieces featured, Neofall found a way to blend the two pieces into one grand feature - leveraging Apotheosis' atmosphere and grandure in order to use it as background scoring to Ascension to Heaven's insane melody. Even with one piece falling to the background and another to the foreground, however, it never feels as if one is overpowering the other - the two leverage one another's strengths seamlessly for a listen that manages to hit harder than just the sum of both's parts.

Without a thorough understanding of music creation or of either track's true sonic makeup, part of me does still feel uneducated, in a sense, to be writing about a rip of this quality in sound and scale - it's a mashup like many others, yes, yet every part of it feels ironed out and sandpapered to sheer seamless perfection between two tracks that would otherwise feel borderline incompatible. Yet...seeing such quality persist within areas of the channel that I remain uneducated on, feels like part of the magic of the SiIvaGunner channel. We are currently on SiIvaGunner's 8th year in the running, with its rippers having grown all the more able to express their passions and interests than ever before - and Season 7 and Season 8 have, in turn, given us some of the most ambitious, personal rips we've yet seen on the channel. Be it Luna, mi Amor, edge of a balcony, The Paragoomba and the Wiggler, or so many more, we've had an onslaught of rips still only made by one to three people that feel creatively driven and magical enough to be justifiably mistaken for months-in-the-making passion projects. And even without a direct tie to its source material, Ascension to Apotheosis gives me that very same vibe: Of one ripper seeing what can be done through utilization of two tracks close to their heart, and going absolutely hog-wild in ensuring the execution be up to the standards raised by so many other parts of the SiIvaGunner team.

It is a blessing that we can be eight years into this channel's life, and still have rips of this caliber slip entirely through the cracks as if they're nothing but everyday, average rips. Today, the hearts of the SiIvaGunner team is on full display at just about every day of its operation - and I am eternally grateful that such seemingly niche pursuits like Ascension to Apotheosis remain part of that.

Us Outcasts Oughta Stick Together, No? (Teaser)

Wei Ying x Xie Lian

Premise: What if child!XL caught a glimpse of Heaven's Only Death God? WWX dies like in canon, then became a ghost, performed an outstanding feat, resulting in him promptly ascending. He later befriends XL post-first ascension and becomes his staunchest ally and more....

IMPORTANT NOTE: This is a planned multi-chapter crack!fic that has already been outlined. Here's a little sample of what to expect.

There was an odd, cool sensation forming in his fingertips, crawling upwards to his wrists, elbows, shoulders, reaching all the way up to his neck. Draping over him like a blanket. 

The little prince’s eyes fluttered open, confused. 

Strange. He was covered beneath layers of soft fur, all the windows were tightly shut to keep the winter chill at bay, the flames within the fireplace still crackling away. 

The ten year-old boy sat up on his bed, groggily rubbing away the sleep from his eyes.

It didn’t…. it didn’t feel oppressive or scary, so not a nightmare.

Then…?

A low, melodious tune drifted into his chambers. Xie Lian felt goosebumps erupting all over his body. The sound had a soft and ominous feel to it. 

Climbing out of bed, Xie Lian cracked one of his windows open and peeked outside.

The music was coming from the palace’s courtyard. 

Beneath the moon’s glow reflecting on the snow covered ground, the little prince could make out the figure of a man, playing an eerie lullaby with his dizi, swaying to the music, dark robes fluttering with the night breeze in a soothing rhythm. Numerous ghost-fires swirled around him in a slow-moving whirlwind of emerald flames. 

Xie Lian watched, entranced as one-by-one the ghost-fires crumbled away, like ashes in the wind….not dispersed, but gone . 

To Xie Lian, it appeared as if they were no longer a part of this plane of existence. 

The little prince had heard so many sinister tales about Heavens’ Only Death God. How he can only be seen by young children and the dying, how he always brought revenge for those whose lives ended unjustly, how he possesses strange powers that can break the strongest of minds and drive them to insanity. 

But to Xie Lian, he resembled a night siren. Meant to soothe troubled minds and lull them to sweet dreams. 

Pretty…. The child thought, eyelids becoming heavy from the melody, ready to sleep while standing as the god’s song reached its end, movements slowing to a stop. 

The figure suddenly turned around, facing the boy that had been staring at him throughout the whole ritual. 

A handsome face, glowing with the widest of smiles looked back at Xie Lian, moonstone eyes crinkling. The god titled his head to the side, curious.

Xie Lian could only smile back and wave! 

The god paused. Slightly startled at the action. 

Normally whenever a child saw him and recognised Wei Ying for what he was, they would start crying and screaming for their mothers. 

The Death God hesitantly waved back before dissipating into a murder of crows. The whole flock flying away to one direction, never once breaking formation.

What a weird kid…. Wei Ying mused. 

800 years later…

It started as weak, barely noticeable tremors, growing into violent quakes, impossible for the average mortal to remain standing, ultimately escalating to the skies of the very Heavens shattering with lightning.

Many gods, old and young, watched. Most in anticipation, some in irritation at all the ruckus.

But they all couldn’t deny their inquisitiveness, it had been a while and they were curious about the new addition. 

“What a fuss! Just hurry up and ascend already!”

“Any idea on who it might be?”

“No, but whoever they are, they must be strong!”

The blinding light finally died down. Allowing the impromptu crowd to get a good look at the new god.

“Is this some kind of joke?!”

“Why is he here?!”

“This must be a mistake!”

Xie Lian didn’t pay any mind to the sneering crowd of displeased gods. Golden-brown eyes rapidly scanning everyone gathered there, desperately searching for that one familiar face. 

Suddenly, a horse barrels through the mass! Its rider shouting at everyone to move out of the way, dammit!  

The horse looked off and completely out of place beneath Heavens’ brightness. The creature was a deep midnight black with a greyish-green mane, glowing emerald eyes, mist puffing out its nostrils with every breath, the white bones of its ribcage completely exposed through the gaping holes in its sides, as if a great beast had taken a few bites out of it and left it like that. 

An Undead! How could such a foul thing even set foot here?!

The thrice-ascended god let out a cry of relief once he locked eyes with the unholy creature’s rider. 

“Ying’er!”

“Husband!”

“.....”

What?!

Since when did Heavens' Only Death God marry the laughing stock?!

Paused, Aheaded, Towers Too

Recently I made an account on Newgrounds, and today I beat two games which had music composed by one of my favourite composers of all time, flashygoodness: Tower of Heaven and Pause Ahead. On the Tower of Heaven side, I have played the game in the past but gave up around the end. Today I decided to beat it, and it was pretty fun! My patience has improved since, and being able to properly enjoy and master the limits given by the game was fun. The ending was very interesting, and apparently, there's another ending I missed. I'll get all the secrets later. Always been fond of the simplicity of the art style and music, near-perfectly capturing the limitations of the Game Boy (color) and in general looking/sounding beautiful. On the Pause Ahead side of things... holy shit. This game. Pause Ahead ekkjkasjsjksdajhsdojhdjsasdjsa this game so good The game is pretty simple on the surface, the main mechanic being pausing the world while you continue to move around, momentum affecting your movement as well. The first levels follow what any good game does (like Tower of Heaven hehe) and slowly introduces you into the world and the main mechanic before saying "fuck you" and instantly jumping towards kaizo bullshit in the best way possible. The levels get harder. Momentum is taken to the max. Pausing becomes your best ally. This shit was so good. It took me some time to get used to it, but eventually, I fought hard with my patience and got through the game and to the final boss, which took me some time (and a walkthrough sorry) to master, but it felt satisfying to finally beat it and witness the first ending. The first ending, because there's a secret path in one of the levels that leads to one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. The belly of the beast. So, small (so I thought at the time of starting to write this) substory before I continue. Rivals of Aether, a game I knew about for a while before I got to play it and another game flashygoodness composed for (there is even a Tower of Heaven stage inside it! with a tiny remix of one of the original songs, Luna Ascension) eventually got a Definitive Edition, and with it came a ton of new things. The milestone system, new adjustments, un-DLCing the DLC fighters, proper workshop support, etc. It was neat. One thing stuck out to me though. It was a song called Nihil Redux that plays on one of the stages, the Frozen Gate. An intense tune with energy and fear injected into it as if you're in the depths of hell fighting for a chance to live. I fucking fell in love with it from the first few seconds. The constant, unstopping rhythm and beautiful instruments got me hooked, and eventually, the song turned into a calmer, hopeful tune. You've escaped hell. You've managed to survive. and then it loops back to the beginning but tbf it's a stage track of course it has to loop that doesn't mean you're going back to hell lollllllllllllll or does it. After listening to this track like a million times through the in-game sound test, I decided to look it up on YouTube and discovered this little game called Pause Ahead, the original source of this remix. And so it loops back to the primary discussion. Nihil Descent. The original version of this song. I reached the secret level of the game where it plays, the hardest challenge. Two fleshy and difficult paths, both taking the main mechanic to the maximum. It took time, but one by one I figured out things. Pause-cancelling at the right times, patterns, etc. All slowly mastered one by one until I got the second ending.

Also, this happened I guess. lmao. I won't discuss the endings in detail for obvious reasons (play the game ehehe) but one felt great and the other surprised me in terms of story context. Also... yes, the music outside of Nihil Descent (including some tracks by another composer, Bill Kiley!) was great, in case I didn't make it obvious sorry. The art style of the game reminds me of Cave Story, very detailed lineless tilesets and enemies with a little protagonist guy person thing character going through pain and sorrow to hopefully find a bright future. Very inspiring and pretty. S12 Rewatch: the good, the okay, the bad and the ugly.

Okay, my spn s12 rewatch is complete! Time to recap!

The good:

American Nightmare: very good episode, compelling weaving of the American Gothic theme and the season’s overarching theme of family&love. David Perez has brilliantly written Magda as both Sam and Dean’s mirror, not an easy task but he managed it and it works perfectly. I very briefly touch upon it here.

Celebrating the Life of Asa Fox: delicious, delicious episode. I love Steve Yockey because he must hate the bunker as much as I do. I might be wrong but I think that in almost all of his episodes our fearless brothers are out and about, meeting new characters, expanding the horizon of the show outside the bunker’s confines. This ep in particular is close to perfection, I love it. Me rambling about it here.

The Raid: good rhythm, solid acting, dialogues are on point, Bob Berens did well with this episode. More thoughts here.

The Memory Remains: very good episode. Everything is thematically and logically weaved. Ketch sends Sam and Dean on a case as an excuse to raid their bunker. The case turns out to be about legacies&families and it’s a beautiful dark mirror to the Winchesters’ family history. I LOVED the imagery of the monster hidden in the basement, the meat plant as a horror setting, the tragedy that befalls those who don’t follow normative rules (the two kids that die in the episode are clearly coded as queer). The alternation between the BMoL’s scrounge of the bunker and the brothers investigating the case is very cool: both storylines give us a deeper insights into Sam and Dean’s life. John Bring wrote a very good episode. I wish he had written more of them!

The Future: I’m listing this episode here exclusively for Amanda Tapping’s directing choices. This episode is beautiful, the scenes are framed in a way that’s aesthetically pleasing to me. I think she managed to bring out more than the script was calling for. Actually, I think she managed to “save” the script where it’s weak. I just don’t understand why she made Sam and Dean look so gigantic compared to Cas, lol. Okay, it’s always like this but in this episode the Winchesters are… alarmingly bigger than usual. As far as the writing is concerned, I’m not sure I like Berens’ penchant for fanfic gaps. I’m okay with the “mixtape handover” missing scene, but what about Cas knowing that a. Sam and Dean actually have the Colt, b. Dean has stored the Colt under his pillow? I mean, he was in Heaven and ignored their calls so I’m guessing he knew about the Colt via Dean’s messages. But what about the frigging pillow? He went to Dean’s room sure to find it there. Sam didn’t even know it was there so how could Cas? What happened in those two weeks between “The Raid” (when Sam found the Colt in the BMoL’s base) and “Between Heaven and Hell” (when Cas was seduced by Kelvin and went back to Heaven?). And Dean has the Colt with him in “The Memory Remains”!Too many questioooooons, I AM CONFUSION, BERENS EXPLAIN!

The okay:

The Foundry: I liked the MoTW and how it’s entwined to the family theme, it’s believable and doesn’t feel forced. I liked the frostbite imagery, Berens doesn’t miss a beat and always reminds us that Mary was unjustly fridged.

Lily Sunder Has Some Regrests: ngl, very cool episode. But I feel like there was a little bit too much, a little bit too suddenly. I LOVE angel lore and this episode will forever be one of my favorites but it’s left me with more questions than explanations. Some of them are here.

Regarding Dean: the MoTW had huge potential but it wasn’t explored that much, it was more white noise in the background than anything else, which shame cause witches are cool. Nonetheless, okay episode, more here.

Stuck in the Middle (With You): this is another favorite episode of mine and probably the one that I’ve re-watched the most. It’s cool like that. But I don’t like Crowley’s ascension to the throne story/retcon. I think it cheapens the character. And why did he go to Ramiel? Back then there were two more princes of hell, why him specifically? Doesn’t make sense to me. And why did he go to him with three gifts like The Three Wise Men in One? Okay it serves as a huge red flag to Crowley’s unemotional demise. Still, me not likey.

Rock Never Dies: This episode has great potential but it feels so subdued to me. Even the actors’ performances are so lukewarm that the only one that stands out is the one from the guy playing Vince Vincent. Maybe that was the point, who knows. The pacing seems off to me and the characters are too defeated for an episode that’s so early in the season. But I loved seeing the brothers in black leather jackets so this goes to the “the okay” list :P.

Who We Are: I have mixed feelings about this episode. I think it’s one of those that are salvaged by the actors’ performances. This time they all brought their A-game, therefore the episode is okay. But I’m not sure how I feel about Sam leading some hunters with whom he has no relationship at all (and two of them killed him and his brother) to go and basically assassinate other humans. I dig the whole leader!Sam that Dabb was trying to unsuccessfully pull off during his tenure as showrunner. But it was weak. And coward since, in the end, it’s not Sam who cold- bloodedly kills Dr. Hess but Jody. I’m listing it in the “okay” really just because of the actors’ performances. The pacing was quite good too. Sam and Dean’s scene where they’re talking about how they thought they were going to die “blaze of glory” style is a veeeery good scene. I love it.

Twigs & Twine & Tasha Banes: cool episode, the parallels are paralleling and the themes are theming. I just wish they hadn't used the trite excuse “Cas is missing, Dean is depressed, let’s distract him with a case”. It’s a little bit lazy writing at this point because they’ve deployed this device several time by now (and they will use it again, alas!). I also wish they had showed us Sam and Dean talking about the BMoL with Max and Alicia cause, you know, they’re hunters and this is one of the main storylines of the season? Apart from that, solid episode.

Ladies Drink Free: Mixed feelings for this episode, too. I love Claire but I think the actress was not at the top of her game in this episode. I’d also loved at least a mention of Castiel, cause you know. But nothing, okay! And the girl’s death and possible Claire’s death too as fodder for Mick’s man pain? Mmm I’m not happy about that. Despite all this, the episode is still quite okay thanks to many “little” things such as Claire saying that that’s her life and she gets all the votes, Claire calling Sam an old skeezer (lol), Sam being quite excited by Kendrick’s largest collection of occult in the world and Dean skinny-dipping in the three-star hotel’s swimming pool. All the small things, as Blink 182 used to sing. All these small things make the episode enjoyable to watch.

The bad:

Keep Calm and Carry On: it’s a meh season opener. The only good thing is Mary and that’s it. I don’t get why they wasted two episodes on Toni Bevell and Ms Watt and then they backtracked and decided to have Mick and Ketch in their stead (also boo-hoo for the everlasting whitedudeism). I can understand Lady Bevell as she was in s11 last ep but Ms Watt? Why adding a new character if you already plan to kill her off right at the beginning of the season. Meh, bad.

Mamma Mia: only good thing about this ep is Mary reuniting with Sam, albeit for a 10 second scene. Not much else to say, tbh. Forgettable.

LOTUS: Guys, please. The President of the United States goes to a random motel and only one.ONE. agent goes to check the room and he doesn’t even check it properly? And why does Cas even need to hide in the closet if he can just wipe out the agent’s memories and he can’t be killed by bullets and surely not by combat? Also, Crowley can literally disappear and teleport other people away with him. Come.On. We’re all aware of the armor plot, all ready to suspend our disbelief but writers, please, put in some more effort.

All Along the Watchtower: the only reason I like this episode is for the little glimpses into Kelly&Cas’ little domestic and cultish dream-life. The rest? Meh. I mean, Lucifer conveniently showing up just like that? Castiel going after him into the rift to kill him with an angel blade (what was Dabb thinking when he wrote that? Who knows! He wrote Castiel as quite dumb, I must confess)? Crowley’s OOC suicide? I’d get it if he died in battle, the whole season was pointing to Crowley’s death. But sacrificing himself? No, I’m still not over it.

The British Invasion: when I first watched the episode I simply hated it. The cheap  dark Harry Potter parallels? No, thank you. But, truth be told, upon re-watching it, I think it was not that bad-bad. Still, I’m gonna put it in “the bad” because Buckleming brought back Eileen in this episode just to kill her off a few episodes after and I’m tired of this shit.

Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell: Look, I don’t think David Perez really understood Crowley’s character. Or maybe it’s just me. But Crowley in his episodes is off. Like, on one hand Crowley comes off as more human, on the other he was the one who let the hellhounds free. In hindsight, I know this was a way to show Crowley as a sort of wavering character ready to be killed off in the sunset boulevard of the alternate universe. Do I have to like it, though? No. Also (and this is a very small thing but it irks me a lot because it was intentional), Dean being super gross and disgusting is so OOC. I don’t think that Dean is a real germ freak. Or so I hope for his sake because of the life he leads. Life in greasy diners and dusty motels is literal hell for a real germophobe. But I do think that he’s obsessed with clean clothes, showers and with staying clean as much as he's possible for him. So Dean wearing the same underwear for four consecutive days? No way, that’s not Dean Winchester.

The ugly:

The One You’ve Been Waiting For: The only SPN Nazi-themed episode that I enjoy is “The Vessel” and that’s because the real theme there is the Resistance. Not even Ben Edlund in s8 could make me like Nazi-themed SPN episodes so no dice here. I really liked Ellie, though. It’s a well written character and the actress was quite good. It’s a shame she was only there for one episode.

First Blood: Possibly my least favorite episode of the season. When I first watched it I kinda giggled the whole time for second hand embarrassment because it felt absurd. More here.

Family Feud: ugly, ugly episode. All I have to say about it can be found here.

There’s Something About Mary: Eileen’s death. I’m just saying this. Eileen’s death. I’ll never forgive them for how it was portrayed and how it was used for (very very weak) manpain. I don’t know what was going on inside Jared Padalecki’s mind when they filmed this episode but he totally seemed unconvinced, too. Just a very ugly episode.

13 overall good episodes against 10 not so good. I must concede that season 12 was NOT a bad season :P

Book Review: O Sacred Head, Now Wounded

How can you stay connected to Christ after the Easter season? In O Sacred Head, Now Wounded, Jonathan Gibson gives a liturgy for daily worship from Pascha to Pentecost.

Remember and Reflect

This 48-day devotional will help you remember and reflect on Christ's life, death, and resurrection. After Easter, I tend to miss the spiritual rhythms and routines of reflecting on Christ. This book helps fill the gap as you dwell on the Savior in the late spring and early summer.

What I most enjoyed were the special seasonal devotions for Ascension Sunday and Pentecost Sunday. The Scripture readings reminded me that Christ loves the Church, and the Catechism section helped me see that Christ stands as our advocate in heaven. Jesus, as our head, will bring us as his body to himself. The Spirit serves us as a pledge.

Queen Belacane wrote a letter to her unborn son.

It pain me more than I can say, I will not see you grow to manhood. I will not see your form, hear your voice, or feel your touch. Even still I will turn towards you, though your face may be veiled to me.

I pray and trust that I will be given sight to see what is in your heart. With eyes of fire I will watch over you, delighting in your happiness and mourning your grief.

Before long you will be a young man.

The lengthening of your limbs needs only time, if a boy merely eats, he will grow.

But becoming a young man in the true meaning of the word, to become a "fata" a chivalrous youth, something more is wanted. Your nourishment must be virtue, generosity, courage, courtesy and wisdom, must be your constant practice.

You must aspire to knighthood of purity and you must attain it.

For s long as men and women has risen towards good in thought, word and deed, so long has chivalry grace the earth.

Whenever revelation has come down the order of chivalry has rallied to the Prophet's call, renewing its fealty to the ancient covenant. Time and again with the sweat and blood of its worthies, it is redeemed it's vow.

In the earlier section of the book, the Queen explaining about the 5 pillars to her unborn son, about the enormous important of the five pillars and their spiritual value. Below is the section on Prayers.

Prayer is ascensions, when you bow down, prayer lift you up. As your head descends to the earth, your heart ascends to the sky. A chevalier needs a cheval .....

A real Ghazi, requires a mount of buraq's noble breed. And what is that ? The holy breath of prayer. The sigh that rises beyond time and space. Spirit rides the wind. I trust you will perform your prayers steadfastly. Prayer is both a solemn duty and a delicate pleasure. When you step on your prayer rug, you step on the world of becoming to the world of being. When you lift your arms and in praise the burden of the past and future falls from your back and your heart expands to greet the present of the present is another name for the eternal. Though you stand on earth you bow and rise in the temple of eternity. To pray five times each day with gesture, thought and feeling is to put in motion the tides of the rhythm that elevate your soul, deepen your peace, see you through danger, and guide you towards the fulfilment of your life's purpose. Hold to this rhythm when all else crumbles around you. Let dust return to dust, but prayers is heaven's portion.
