when i was at the nail tech school tour, the owner (director, i think is her official title?) asked me why i wanted to be a nail tech. this is something my therapist prepared me for!

one of the goals i had for therapy was gaining enough confidence to career switch. i was unemployed for the longest time, had a brief but unsuccessful stint at a local game store, and have been unemployed since. i refused to go back to retail and needed to switch.

my therapist would always notice my nails during a session. they are well-manicured and the color was always different each session. they are also my natural nails.

after a couple of unsuccessful tries at finding something out there for me, she asked to see my nails up close. she got me talking. since we communicate using telehealth, i showed her the nail polish collection i’ve amassed for 18 years, neatly organized in an ikea file cabinet.

she was impressed. nearly every color has its own drawer. she remarked, “i think this is what you were meant to do, patton. i think you should pursue this.”

i told her a story. it goes like this:

when i was a little kid, my mom would do my nails. my mom had a modest polish collection, stored in a small wooden box. they were older polishes, based on what i currently know. not from the 90s, when i was little, but earlier. some of them probably dated back to the 70s, but they were still good. back then, the range of colors was nowhere near as wide as it is now. it was pinks and reds, maybe a plum purple. my mom would paint my nails pink.

then in 1995 (i don’t know why i remember that year, but i do), the game changed. revlon had just put out its street wear line. finally! more than just pinks and reds and maybe that purple. there were blues, greens, yellows, even a black! i went gaga. my first one was a dark blue.

my auntie got me a markwins polish set for christmas when i was 13. it was HUGE. i think it was a 30-polish set. while everything else in the house may have been an absolute clusterfuck of a hoarder mess, i held on to my polishes.

when i moved out and out-of-state, i had three polishes in my possession — a frosty blue from mary kate & ashley (yeah, those twins), a orange from wild n’ crazy, and a sheer sky blue from revlon called bright sky. i still have the latter two! and i did my nails with bright sky last week!

i began to amass my collection once more. my mom was diagnosed with cancer shortly after i left home, and by 2009, my mom was dying. she signed a dnr (do not resuscitate) order, and by late summer/early fall, the time had come. my mom was in too much pain to continue. she was in at-home hospice care, in a hospital bed, hooked up to a morphine drip. i made my final visit. i was spending what little time i had left with my mom, watching tv, getting out any final stories we wanted to share.

my mom wanted me to do her nails one last time. she knew i brought polish with me, i always did any time i traveled. she picked out two colors — korean fruit and flower stand by carolyn new york for her hands (a light peachy coral crème) and cherry glaze by sally hansen salon for her feet (a slightly jelly neutral red)

it came around full circle.

my therapist was right. i was meant to do this.

Hi so I wanted to make this into one coherent post since my last one got a little messy.

This is just a general response to when people ask why I don't like Olivia. It has nothing to do with her association to Harry. It's all about her.

Possible TW - SA, homophobia, racism, rape, abuse

Supports Woody Allen - came up in 2007, 2013, and 2016 (Woody was accused of sexually abusing his adoptive daughter. He also married the adopted daughter of his ex-wife but that a separate thing)

Multiple allegations of her being racist. Some proof for this is in her tweet from 2012, defending Sacha Boron Cohen's Ali G bit at the Oscars (which wasn't approved to happen). Many Asian people took offense to his joke. Ali G also stereotypes black people and allows an environment where it's "okay" to laugh at black street culture. Regardless of if you're not offended by this or not, it wasn't Olivia's place to stick up for him.

She stereotyped lesbian relationships (to kissing and scissoring) and said she essentially wanted to be in one because she was bored (after her divorce from Tao and before Jason)

She compared coming out of the closet to coming out as a director. This is one that I was personally offended by because it is NOT the same. Coming out and navigating through sexuality is scary for most people.

Her "feminism" has been reduced to wearing t-shirts saying "FEMINIST AF" and speaking about how females need to spread their legs to show they're powerful.

Said "hookers" should be "mute and cross eyed", and joked about how people should be able to hire them for their partners when they're not in the mood/going away. This whole article is problematic tbh.

Was in a questionable Down Syndrome ad that somehow had more emphasis on her than Down Syndrome. Many people viewed it as ableist and harmful to those with disabilities.

He bragged about repeatedly having sex with a 14 year old girl. He was 23 at the time, obviously making this a case of statutory rape and not just sex. Supports the brand Revlon, which is not a cruelty free brand yet she claims to be an animal activist. And just to be clear, Revlon claims they don't test on animals but they choose to sell their products in countries where animal testing is a requirement.

Was connected to Harvey Weinstein. Repeatedly hung out with him, sung his praises, was name dropped by one of his victims (Harvey proposed a threesome between the victim and Olivia). And believe me I would LOVE to look past this but it's unsettling that her name kept coming up, that she was name dropped by one of Harvey's victims (telling me her and Harvey at least had some sort of conversation regarding her sexual preferences), and that even when the time came for all celebrities to speak out she kind of skirted around the situation and redirected attention away from Harvey and onto all men in powerful positions.

POSSIBILITY of being capable of physical violence. More than one source has come forward to claim this. Not a ton of proof to support it, but I am personally inclined to believe it.

Lied about firing Shia LaBeouf from DWD to keep Florence Pugh and the cast "safe". In reality, she begged Shia to come back to DWD and that Florence needed a "wake up call". Please refer to this timeline and explanation.

So yeah, some of this stuff is worse than others. But in general, this is why I can't support her and why it bothers me she's linked to Harry. How shippers overlook all this is beyond me.

One woman’s frank talk—I’ll see you, the self, in dreams.

Earlier today, after having a gander at my reflection, I thought of people from the past—Specifically, a picture of my friend’s mom came to mind. It was her wedding day and she was in the backseat of a sprawling Cadillac. It was 1956. She was wearing chantilly lace. And she was smiling. Her lips were rouged dark. It was a black and white picture, but given the period, her lipstick must’ve been like Revlon’s Cherries in the snow. It was, from what I’ve heard, very popular in the 50’s. I absolutely lived for fashion from this day when I was younger, so I wore it too—Frequently, by the time I came across the photo.

Dare I say, I don’t think a generous smile of mine ever competed with the one of my friend’s mom, on her wedding day. In Cuba, around this time, it was popular to take a photograph of the newlyweds looking out back, toward the back window toward the street. I assume, the photographer must’ve been humped up on the trunk, with his lens peering into the car.

This memory of what was and possibly was stands out because by the time I had known my friend’s mom, she was anything but the svelte laced bodice’d, full skirted woman I saw pictured on her wedding day.

My friend’s parents owned a bodega. Now, unless you know of people who actually run or operate bodegas or restaurants; you might be surprised to learn that this particular business endeavor takes a lot out of a person, after it takes all your investment—And it was no different for my friend’s parents.

Her mom looked a lot older than she was. She wore these super faded, thinned out cotton vests/aprons/whatever you call them—and behind that sheath/a sagging shell full of wear and tear; the staggering cost of hard labor stared back at you.

She would arrive at the bodega sometime after four in the morning. She’d acquire the hefty pots with heafty lids; with accompanying long wooden spoons. She’d have black beans boiling for hours and white Canilla rice steaming by six am. Eventually, fish, meats and pork would be cooked; and the plantains would be fried; and the yucca would be boiled.

She kept her kitchen efficient. Clean. It met with the fast paced demands of the working folk who used to pace in quick during lunch or after work. She would not get home till after nine, only to then have dinner—wash everyone’s plates; rehash her waking existence again, while many of us were still sleeping.

By the time I met my friend’s mom, I could not have imagined her looking anything but how she looked—Until that is, I was made privy to her wedding day picture. Could she have imagined on her wedding day that her body would weather as it had?

Had she thought that she would continue to wear fine delicate dresses like the one she wore on her wedding day? She used to look so confident. Open to life. She was a red rose placed on a white marble altar.

I only got to meet the woman with lips prematurely sunk in toward the back of her tounge/signs of bad gums or teeth. She always looked deafeted. Not just by her posture, but in her eyes. Had I seen and recognized then the imprint of a devastation felt long ago? Did I have enough empathy to feel it staring back at me when we conversed? I hope I never looked so insightful to her.

Do you have any idea what it’s like to be one person one day, then another one ten years down the road? First, a proper lady. Then a functioning woman who is less romantic about womanhood? Her old picture wreaked of sophistication and polite manners.

When we let ourselves go, it doesn’t always occur in one flash. The unentanglement of woman can be awfully slow. I think to all it must’ve taken her to keep stable, in a country where your’re almost immediately despised, before you’re quasi accepted.

She always looked frayed. Torn. Like the hem of her cotton vest/apron/ whatever you call it. Was it a quiet rebellion that kept her from buying a new apron? Did the stained apron loudly speak/though no one listened—about how she was more than a beast of burden? That when she looked at herself, she in fact clearly remembered—I wasn’t always this way—She wasn’t. Maybe she needed people to see that.

When I regarded my reflection this morning, my mind gravitated to her, and I understood, in some real humble way how people become shells and how surviving whisks the flesh away; while leaving the soul stranded on some locked down island. It’s as if today, she was a genuine part of me. Maybe temporarily?—

I look out of some old car’s back windshield. The road is behind me. The car just keeps going forward. Who’s driving? I’m not looking forward. I might be fixated to a part of me wearing Cherry Red lipstick—I’m also wearing white Chantilly lace. I come back to my living moment, and then I remember my earthy flowy dresses perfectly lined up in my closet. But I’m not wearing them—And they are not wearing me.

Designing a garment for the customer called Luciana Ramirez who is a hispanic environmentalist from Buenos Aires, Argentina and is 41 years old. She is a seasonal shopper, currently wearing high street clothing such as River island and Next but aspires to wear designer clothing such as Dior and Jean Paul Gaultier. Ramirez owns the profession of environmentalism in Buenos Aires but also has done some international work in New York and Ottawa, furthering her career. To her work, she drives her Mitsibishi car and she wears a natural look, and when going out for a drink with friends, she goes for a glam look, both looks containing high street makeup brand such as, NYX, Revlon and Mac. Above all she is a mother of 3 and a wife. In her free time, Luciana loves to spend time with her friends, family and husband, going out to bars, dining at restaurants and doing her weekly exercise by taking yoga classes.

As someone who works in tv do you have any tips or tricks you could share? Just about like being on tv and such?

Well, I can give some tips, but I work on crew, I actively avoid being turned into Cast (yet somehow I’ve been on air more than the crew members who WANT to be on tv). Here’s what I can give, but it’s probably not what you were looking for:

If you’re being interviewed in any situation, try to answer questions in complete sentences. For example if you’re asked about your favorite color say “My favorite color is _________”, not just the color itself.

This gives them the option of cutting out the interviewer in edits, and just overall makes it easier on the producer and editor to use the footage as they need. Generally speaking like 85% of what you say will be cut anyways.

Unless it’s a live interview, don’t hesitate to stop yourself and re-state something in a different way. Editors will want you to sound good, so they’ll help you a lot.

I once spent a solid month editing audio for an interview with a Buddhist monk because he kept sucking his teeth and it made a weird sound. The length of the piece kept changing (2 min, 5 min, 4 min, 7 min, 9 min, 4 min) so I had to just edit the audio on the raw interview so I could make each individual edit faster.

Makeup isn’t as complicated as people think. The blunt truth is that TV lights makes E V E R Y O N E ‘ S skin look greasy and oily, no exceptions. Still, you can buy a $3 compact of what looks like white powder (Probably called HD or Photo-Ready). Don’t spend a lot of money on it, don’t let Revlon convince you you need their $12 version. It’s all just talcum powder.

The powder breaks up the light so your skin looks like skin on TV and not a swamp monster thing.

Any makeup beyond that is what we call “beauty makeup”. That’s like if you contour, put on lipstick, eyeliner, etc. Do all that as you wish, then put the HD/Photo-ready powder on top. 

Especially focus on forehead (double-especially at hairline), beneath your eyes, nose (double-especially the tip), upper lip, and chin. Cheeks as needed, but that area tends to see less direct light and so it doesn’t look as oily.

In general, unless you’re reading off a teleprompter directly into a camera, just pretend it isn’t there.

This goes for news interviews, general interviews, etc. 

As we say at the station “Keep calm and don’t look at the camera- look anywhere but the camera.”

If you DO NOT want to be on camera (if a crew is grabbing general shots on the street or something)—

Just go up to the camera man, patiently wait while he finished his shot, and then say ‘Excuse me, I’m going to be over there, can you please try to avoid getting me in the shot?”

99% of the time they’ll just say “Oh, yeah, sure, that’s fine” and even if they do get you in the shot, it’ll be super wide so there are a ton of people and you aren’t featured. Or if they’re also editing the piece (like news cameramen), they’ll cut around footage of you.

OR if confrontation makes you uneasy, just stare dead-eyed directly into the camera (bonus points for not blinking). If you make them uncomfortable, they won’t use the footage.

OR go up and tell them you DEFINITELY want to be on camera (or behave in a way that suggests it). If someone is too eager for attention they’ll specifically cut you out of the shot.

You can also just hold up a branded item (like a Starbucks cup or shopping bag) and prominently feature it along with your person. Unless that company is one of the sponsors of what they’re shooting, the camera guys will avoid it.

If a microphone is being put on you (properly), the crew is going to be all up in your space.

My general policy (since I’m the one who mics everyone) is that I will talk someone through exactly what I’m doing as I’m doing it so they don’t feel uncomfortable.

I ask them to please put the microphone up under their shirt and out through the neck, then say “Alright, now I’m just going to clip this right here and then pull the cord a little bit to get some of the slack out… And we’re done!”

If the lady has a dress on I warn her I’m going to be clipping the mic to her neckline, then pushing the cord down into her collar and around to her back, where I will use a little bit of (gaffers) tape to pin it in place.

I’ve trained the guys I work with to also speak like that rather than just grabbing people’s shirts and moving stuff around, if the person putting a mic on you just reaches for you ask them to please let you know what they’re doing at each step.

Just a note– don’t wear clunky necklaces that sit at the neckline, you’re an audio person’s worst nightmare.

If the mic is put on WELL, it will go under a layer of clothing to hide the cord. If the program is more lax or the audio person is lazy, the cord will just be left hanging out (which looks sloppy).

If you are putting a mic on a dress that has multiple layers/textures, clip the mic to the most fabric-esque of those layers.

I had to mic Natalie Cole (daughter of Nat King Cole) for an interview and while I went for the fabric of her dress, the other camera crew clipped onto a plastic petal she had. Their mic fell off 4 times because of the slippery material and the final time she snapped at them and then (nicely) asked me to fix the mic since mine hadn’t fallen off.

Natalie Cole was such a nice lady.

Celebrities aren’t as scary as they’re made out to be, UNLESS–

Generally it’s their manager who is a dick (so they don’t have to be because Image).

As long as you are professional, most celebs are normal people. Don’t ask for autographs or photos if you’re there to work (why I don’t have pics with most people I’ve worked with ), don’t shirk duties to stare at them. 

Job first. Ogling second. All celebs respect that.

They tend to have pretty packed schedules, so if you’re delaying them you are directly screwing up their day.

That being said, most still understand accidents on set happen with audio or video and won’t bite your face off if there’s a slip-up.

The meaner a celebrity is, the lower-level they are.

I’ve worked with sports stars, television stars, even an ex-President of the United States (Jimmy Carter, who I DID get a selfie with because he offered), yet the absolute WORST ‘celebs’ I’ve ever worked with are the ones you’ve never heard of with niche or tiny fan-bases.

Generally speaking, Celebrities didn’t get their status by being dicks (I mean legit celebs, not reality tv people). As long as you’re professional and treat them with basic respect, they’ll be cool. If they were impossible to work with they wouldn’t make it so far.

They also tend to be very well behaved when cameras are around.

So a conversation yesterday at the Village and a commercial during SNL made me realize two different yet related things. So I'm sharing a list of odd things I have never gotten over:

-Being told we didn’t have time to go to the giftshop at the Eltz Castle while on a field trip there in 3rd grade while we lived in Germany even though I saw kids from other classes in there.

-8th grade

-My sister ruining a tube of my favorite lipstick when I was in high school: Revlon’s Street Wear in the color called Blood.

-Carnivale being canceled (and I think it’s why to this day I have a hard time committing to scripted shows because before it I had no problem)

-My favorite bookstore ever having to close because their inventory was ruined by their sprinkler system going off at random and the insurance money was enough to cover the damages or rebuild their inventory. They specialized in disconuined editions and overstock and all sorts of other random things. Every time I drive by that building and it’s been redone and is now some type of high end interior design place I want to cry.
