IT'S DONE! I have finished the initial scene by scene basic analysis step of revision prep!
This book is a mess. I have so many scenes to add, a few of which I have no bloody clue how to write. And there's a few instances of characters realizing the exact same thing more than once. But, I've been reading the rest of this chapter in my revision book and apparently the next steps are to map out the plot arcs and character arcs. So, that will tell me exactly where my issues are. I'll be starting on that tomorrow.
But, step 1 is DONE.

my partner, trying desperately to help me find a neat, tidy, logical conclusion, expressing all sorts of totally normal things that a story could do while i just thrash around on an enormous crocheted blanket it took her months to finish
me, sitting in the car after a drive at 6 am, furiously typing some of the weirdest shit i've ever bothered with, because it's emotionally satisfying, and it gets us where we need the plot to go
my partner, diligently requesting to read the work and upholding her part of the bargain: no comments until i'm done
me, relishing in building a monster i didn't dream of until five minutes ago, leaning as hard into fuckin wild times as i can

Tips for revising a short story opening sentence:
Re-write the first sentence of a short story 12 times in under a minute
Lose all track of how English works
Text said sentence to 3 people
Google how long palm trees live even though "old-growth" is a subjective descriptor
Re-write the sentence two more times
Switch the words 'cab' and 'car' back and forth until you leave it the way it was originally
Question your own childhood memories
Google if Spanish moss can live on palm trees
Curse AI summaries
Google if Spanish moss can live on palm tress + Reddit
Write this post
You know what the sentence might actually be fine
Should the M in moss be capitalized?
No

I feel like the Primaris should have been the catalyst for like, an imperial civil war. At the very least, much unrest in the house of Guilliman. Their existence, let alone rollout/integration, should have had many chapters absolutely rioting. It should be beyond the pale by several orders of magnitude and be seen as an enormous overreach by the more autonomy loving chapters, a blasphemy by the more orthodox chapters, and an existential threat to chapters with geneseed quirks. Plus anyone with any awareness of the thunder warriors should take one look at them and recognize the writing on the wall. Guilliman should absolutely recognize what they represent, what they imply. Like they're the leading wave of a paradigm shift that doesn't bode well for what came before. And I say this as someone who's not averse to Primaris, I just think they could've, should've, been a waaaay bigger deal. I know they loathe changing the status quo and we're never getting rid of the posterboys but I think we missed out on something interesting.

Is it just me, or is worldbuilding a trap for writers?
If you put it within the narration, then it's an infodump.
If you put it in dialogue, it's "as you know, Bob."
If you put in a little or don't put it at all, people will complain that your details are sketchy.
But it IS there, they complain that there's too much of it and that it slows the pace.
Oh yeah, and the exact info they want always comes either too late or too early, never at exactly the right time.
Bottom line, when it comes to worldbuilding, you might as well just do whatever you want. Seriously.

no one tells you this but once you stop drafting your story you have to actually do stuff and like. Think. instead of getting freaky with it.
