Very recent tag on my last post, but all credit goes to my partner again. They were sitting next to me while I cycled through Google image search "1920s flapper dress," going 'no. no. no. god no. no. absolutely not'.

just started dunmeshi (anime version) and while i'm only up to ep 8, the thing i'm finding the most remarkable about it is how it portrays expertise
like, everyone in the main party has something they're really really good at, to the point where it's obvious why a party would want this person in particular to come take on the challenges of a dungeon, and why this particular combination of skill sets has allowed the party to get as far as they have. that's great writing, but it's not what i find remarkable.
the remarkable parts are:
everyone in the party has something in their skillset that the others could benefit from learning
even the experts don't know everything about the field in which they have expertise
#1 is pretty common in stories where skill acquisition is how the main characters progress (i'm thinking of things like naruto and dbz, where learning new techniques is how one advances in the power scheme of the world). the way dunmeshi handles it strikes me as different and interesting, because instead of The Main Character assembling an armory of skills by mastering The One Skill each secondary character has to teach, everybody is learning from everybody, and they're picking and choosing skills that are relevant to their areas of expertise. the example that comes to mind is senshi learning how to spot and avoid traps from chilchuck - he's never going to become better at it than chil, but he's learning it because it's a useful thing for him to know how to do.
#2 is what i find the most remarkable, because i don't know if i've seen it done before. the example that comes to mind most readily is senshi - who seems to know everything there is to know about the monsters he's familiar with - not knowing that lighting a fire around the red dragon's body is a potentially deadly misstep. that's a piece of information laios has, despite being orders of magnitude less familiar with the dungeon than senshi is. but it also makes perfect sense that laios would know that and senshi wouldn't, because laios has encountered a lot of dragons and read a lot about dragons and senshi hasn't.
and in my experience, in a line of work where i'm surrounded by a bunch of experts in a similar field with markedly different skillsets, this is how experts interface and how expertise functions in real life.
and it's made me realize that experts written without those two aspects fall completely flat for me.

I'm not built for watching movies w straight dudes cause I can't say the things I want to say like, "James Bond would benefit from puppy play," "He should seduce a man next," "If I made a Bond film, I'd have him infiltrate a bdsm club as a sub" etc etc.

2024 Book Review #29 – The Expert System’s Brother by Adrian Tchaikovsky
Tumblr media
My public library tragically lacks the Tchaikovsky books I actually want to read (one day I shall get my hands on City of Last Chances. One day...), but it helpfully does have a random assortment of his other stuff. Among that other stuff was this rather charming little novella – hardly anything to set the world on fire, but it was a fun easy read to break the streak of a couple of disappointments.
The story follows Handry, a boy growing up in a village guided and governed by ‘ghosts’, immortal systems that fuse with and warp a suitable host to allow them to interact with the rest of the village as lawgiver, doctor, architect, or whatever else the village might require. After a deeply unfortunate accident, he ends up partially ‘severed’ – cut off from village and the world around it in a very real way, incapable of digesting food, avoided by animals, and inspiring aa visceral fight-or-flight reaction in everyone who sees him. For a time, his sister helps him survive on the village’s periphery, but when she’s selected as it’s next Doctor, her ghost finally takes a look at him and decrees he is incompatible with the community – and so he is forced to flee and wander the earth, and ends up learning the real state and history of the world.
This came out in 2018, but everything about it feels very classic sci fi – generally in a good way, to be clear. The story that exists primarily to be able to tease and then exposit about worldbuilding, the setting of an alien world inhabited by colonists who have forgotten their history and the source of the technology they rely upon, the absolute plethora of random bits of weirdness that are only really revealed implictly because they are totally normal to the protagonist (the six-legged and four-eyed bodyplan of most wildlife, for example), even the overarching theme of the perfect virtue of curiosity and questioning both charismatic authority and received tradition. It was a fun time! Made me a bit nostalgic for all my dad’s old ratty paperbacks I read as a child.
It’s definitively a novella-sized story, and I’m immensely glad Tchaikovsky didn’t try to drag out longer than it is. There are some intriguing points that are never followed up on – the tool-using and home-building aliens which every casually treats as wildlife and casually exterminates or drives out when they need more land, to begin with – that I assume are what the sequel follows up on? But this ended in the right place, and even with his voice being so present in the narration I’m not really sure Handry is enough of a character to have sustained a full novel in his head. Certainly none of the other characters got any more characterization than they strictly needed.
So yeah, no real complaints, it was an enjoyable read – but on the other hand in three months you’ll probably need to remind me that I’d actually read this.

really not loving the way i try to get therapy for anything and the therapists just end up being like. what if you got assessed for autism. well what if i did!!! what would you do differently if i had a diagnosis!!! do that anyway given that a diagnosis wouldn't actually change anything and it's not like there are meds and the waiting lists are a zillion years!!!

Neither of us loved the show (The Girl from the North Country). We both agreed the performances were great but the show itself was a bit of a jumble. The music didn't seem to connect well. My companion thinks she would have liked the show without the music. I think I would have liked the show without the play. Clearly, the things didn't go together.
In terms of Dylan, it made me want to watch I'm Not There again, which I really loved when I saw it in the theater. Might see if I can find it somewhere.

I Just Listened To: MC24 / SIN24 by Charles Leclerc + Other music from him
Yesterday, Charles Leclerc released his latest single MC24 / SIN24 with not one but TWO songs! They are called “MC24 (1:4)” and “SIN24 (1:5)” respectively.
Tumblr media
So to celebrate, I’m going to go into detail about Charles’ music in order as well as review his new single below the cut. ⬇️
First off, a bit of backstory:
Formula 1 driver Charles Leclerc has always had a passion for music, but it wasn’t until the pandemic that the Monegasque decided to buy himself a piano so he could start learning how to play it during the off-season.
Tumblr media
After posting a story on Instagram of him playing some music on the piano, he received a lot of positive feedback from fans on it, and it inspired him to record and release his own original music on streaming platforms such as Spotify and iTunes.
Tumblr media
“AUS23 (1:1)” was born, released on 25th April 2023. It was named after the Australian GP he competed in that year. A sweeping, cinematic piano piece with synthesised strings as backing to support the main melody. Hans Zimmer’s Interstellar soundtrack may come to mind, and according to Charles, he’s actually one of his idols in music. In an article on EssentiallySports, he stated, “I think everything by Hans Zimmer is good. Otherwise, I like Coldplay.”
Fans LOVED “AUS23”, and the track currently sits at 15.3 million listens on Spotify as of 18th February 2025.
Tumblr media
Then came “MIA23 (1:2)”, nearly a month after the success of “AUS23”, on 8th May 2023. This track was named after the Miami GP Charles competed in that year. This is another emotional piano piece using the same strings in the background to support the main melody.
“MON23 (1:3)” was released a month after that on 14th August 2023. It was named after the Monaco GP Charles competed in that year, but this time, it wasn’t released the day after the race had taken place. The melody remains pretty much the same; the only difference being that the strings are replaced by a synthesised choir.
Let me highlight this particular track for a moment: I think “MON23” is a very special piece because Monaco is where Charles was born and a place where he currently lives. It’s a place that’s very personal to him, and this is evident upon listening to this track. It’s gentle, it’s atmospheric, and almost holy sounding in a way, like something you’d hear in a church. Charles himself has described in the past that he "[believes] in God,” but he is "[not someone] who would pray or go to church". Whether it was done intentionally or not, I personally think it’s a nice little touch. In my perspective, I imagine “MON23” as his journey from birth to where he is now: A Formula 1 driver from Monaco who wants to win races, and most of all, win his 1st World Championship title in the sport.
In February 2024, Charles travelled to Paris to a music studio to do a collaboration with the “Piano King” Sofiane Pamart. They spent 2 days working on 4 different piano pieces for the EP DREAMERS. The tracks are called “Focus”, “Heartbeat”, “Limitless” and “The Dream Continues”, and they are all references to Charles’ Formula 1 career. The album was then released on 16th February 2024.
Tumblr media
If you compare the DREAMERS EP to Charles’ solo work, you can hear the differences in how each track is composed. In “AUS23”, “MIA23” and “MON23”, they sound more experimental and minimalistic. They have simple yet catchy melodies, and they all have a particular style that is unique to Charles. The arpeggiations, the way the music is structured and sectioned, how each of them start and end, things like that. Whereas in DREAMERS, it’s clear there is more involvement, more range, more keys being played because Charles and Sofiane are sitting side by side playing different keys and pitches, trying to emulate the feel of a Charles composition. It sounds more polished and professional that way. It’s not a bad album by any means; far from it. It’s just they don’t sound very Charles -like to me. It’s a solid effort nonetheless and I enjoyed listening to it! 😍🥰
Now we finally get to MC24 / SIN24, Charles’ brand new single, which he released yesterday! This announcement came completely out of the blue (Pun not intended) as he usually posts a few behind-the-scenes clips and previews leading up to the release to get a taste of what the music sounds like to fans. I’ll give him this though: It had been a while since he released some new music to the public, so I can forgive him there. Anyway…
“MC24 (1:4)” retains that familiar sound we all know and love from Charles’ solo work. This time, it sounds like it’s recorded live in his room because you can hear a little bit of background noise in some places such as the piano keys being pushed and Charles shuffling in his seat. Also, there aren’t any other instruments playing in the background; It’s just him and the piano. So simple yet so lovely.
“SIN24 (1:5)” is pretty much the same as “MC24” in terms of style and quality of the recording, but this one sounds much more dramatic in comparison, especially in the middle section. At least, to my ears. It’s great!
Tumblr media
I have created a playlist of all the music he’s released so far, and listening to every single one of them in release order, it’s so fascinating to me how much he’s improved over the course of two years. I’m so happy for him. Keep up the fantastic work, Charles! 🥹🥹🥹
Overall, Charles Leclerc’s music is so charming to listen to, whether you’re a fan of him or not. If you haven’t heard of any of his music, I highly recommend checking him out if you have the time. 🥰

This article is part of our Japanese Obscurities feature. We put out a whole book about them, which is available as both a full color hardcover and a Kindle ebook from Amazon! If you’d like to see more of these features, please check out the book and if you enjoyed it, leave a five star review so we can do a follow up with even more interesting, offbeat, or historically important Japanese games!
Although the 90s saw plenty of Japanese developed first-person shooters, only a few of them reached the PlayStation. Among these was Expert, a Wolfenstein 3D-like shooter where you play as a member of EXPERT, a SWAT team that must ascend and clear out a government building occupied by terrorists.
