🌱 fixed a huge rip on one of my grocery bags 🧵🪡✨️ tbh i'm still not 100% sure it's structurally sound, but if it rips again i'll just keep adding leaves 🌿

Just the lining in this canvas tote bag and it’ll be good to go! I’m not gonna put pockets inside this one, but I do have two outside pockets, one on each side.
You can’t really see it because I used matching thread, but I quilted the canvas before making the bag it give it a: extra strength and b: thermal batting so I can haul cold groceries better.

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate! This year I made my family reusable gift bags to put their gifts in. I got the lucky cat fabric from Kyoto when I visited Japan. 😻 It was fun to sew them and I can't wait to make more!
Image description: A photo of four drawstring cloth bags on a table. Two of the bags have a tan colored lucky cat pattern print exterior fabric with black lining. The other two are the same pattern but in black, with a red lining. All of the bags have red ribbon drawstrings. The bags are on a plain printed table cloth and there is a Chrismas tree in the background.

Not saying we shouldn't use reusable bags regardless, but does anyone else find it disconcerting that as a whole reusable bags have gone from literal canvas (cotton, linen) bags to just another form of plastic (PET), albeit one that can be reused? Like I'm not even one of those rabid "we must ban ALL plastic no matter what!" people and I still find it odd and a bit depressing
#reusable bags#canvas bag#pet plastic#take your canvas bag take your canvas bag to the supermarket#I'm saying this as someone who uses PET bags for the record because it's all you can find in the stores these days

Matching canvas grocery bags for me and my mum. She loves red, so she got the red interior.
The lining is also waterproof raincoat material, so she can just wipe the bag out very easily if something spills without needing to wash the entire thing. (My lining is just beige cotton fabric, so I don’t put liquid or meat in it LOL)

At the end of the day though, instead of getting bogged down by the crushing weight of capitalism's death grip on our planet, do what little you can. Yeah, a reusable bag might take a lot of carbon emissions to make- so instead of going out and buying a specific bag and living with that, use that tote bag from that one summer camp that's been chilling in your closet for a decade.
Take an old pillowcase with a cute pattern on it and add two old headscarves tied in braids as handles.
Bring a laundry basket to the store and put that sucker straight into your cart.
Heck, ride your bike to the store and use the basket that's attached.
None of this is going to fix what's wrong.
None of this is going to make the carbon emissions that have already happened not have happened.
None of this is going to make a difference... Unless we all try, a little bit.
A lot of us trying, and failing to be perfect, but still trying to do our best to reduce our impact on the environment, is so much better than only a few of us somehow doing it perfectly.
Studying sustainability has taught me that the answer to things like “is it better to use paper or plastic bags?” always ends up being something like “we would need to perform an extremely in depth study on the entire life cycle of both types of bags from virgin material collection to product recollection, compare things like amount of product each type of bag can carry, material usage per bag, how frequently double-bagging is occurring, and take into account a ridiculous number of factors down to the fuel efficiency of the trucks that transport them and even after all that we would have to try to find a way to compare whether the higher carbon emissions of producing and transporting paper bags is better than the fact that the plastic bags will be plastic bags for the next thousand years. And at the end of the day all this research would ultimately not be particularly useful because our waste collection streams in the US are so fucking bad it’s depressing.”
And then someone will ask about reusable bags and you’d have to do the study again only to reveal that you need to use the reusable bag like a couple thousand times to offset the carbon emissions it takes to make the reusable bag and make it worth it over disposable bags and that’s not taking into consideration bags breaking before then or being forgotten about completely.
The answer always leads to “it’s incredibly complicated but our current practices are so terrible we would need a full scale restructuring of our economy and practices to such a degree that can literally never happen because our government is lobbied by the people who make money off of said unsustainable practices.”
So the answer to “paper bags or plastic bags?” is that we need to destroy capitalism
