After the Dawntrail graphic update nerfed Alyx, I used fantasia to change a few features and Cope, basically. Over the last month I'd gotten used to her new face - even come to like it - until I'd get into gpose and try to capture her like I used to. None of the angles and shapes were the same anymore. I'd look at screenshots from weeks prior and feel utterly despondent that the face I knew for almost 10 years was just GONE.

While the actual feature shapes definitely changed (some due to new facial bones, some are just. completely nonsensical choices) I realized through close scrutiny that a lot of the difference was due to the lack of definition in the skin texture. I can't 3D sculpt, but I CAN paint, so I finally took matters into my own hands and manually edited the highlander face 1 diffuse in Procreate. I basically added shadows where they had removed them, and drew in what feels like a brand new version of the old iconic upper lip.

The eyeshadow is still a little funky up close, but I'm literally so relieved and happy I could cry. I almost did last night when I first imported the texture.

She's back. A little bit different, but she looks like herself again. She's back. WE'RE SO FUCKING BACK.

It was such a wonderful surprise that Marina was actually the focus of the cliffhanger of the penultimate episode of the entire series. They have been one of the main and most important emotional cores of the show. It was so bittersweet & disheartening to finally have that for a w|w we've fought for, for so long, only for it to be taken away far too soon.

… the world is changing right now as we’re standing here, the world is changing and it’s beautiful… now what I know is that I want to be in this beautiful mess of a changing world with you… I loved the 360 tracking shot of the proposal scene. It was a grand, dramatic effect, like their world was spinning out of control.

On a bigger scale, the 709 ending sequence was the ultimate climax of the arc of their relationship - a revolving juxtaposition of their biggest dream & deepest fear realizing at the same time. With Helm, a younger queer woman who looked up to Marina, yet again witnessing another of their important milestones, with Carina. While Maya was with Andy, her best and oldest friend & teammate. They've walked in and out of so many fires - literal or otherwise - together. They just talked about how far they've come and where they were heading next.

I love how the writing, directing and editing of this episode worked together to create something larger than the sum of its parts. Like 704, but bigger. Both episodes had great visual storytelling too. Even before the climatic scene, the arc shots around & the blocking of Maya or Carina spoke volumes.

They were either thinking of or looking for each other. Their expressions and tones conveyed the fears & hopes not entirely revealed by their words. The foreshadowing.

The love scene also centered them - their desires and pleasure. I could also see this scene doubling as a trigger shot scene.... where Carina helps Maya with the shot, kisses it all better then takes it further... Carina is an expert on orgasm for pain relief after all 😏

While I get why they didn't include it (because 4e fucked with the tieflings and now we have archdevil tieflings and the og hereditary tieflings in the same space, and the former are hogging the limelight) I think it would've been interesting to have Bhaal tieflings as a subrace option. They wouldn't look as flashy as the others - no horns, no technicolour skin or tail, for example (unless their mortal parent was a tiefling who looked like that, I guess) - but they would be highly inclined towards violence and murder. Deity descended planetouched are known for having birthmarks in the shape of their ancestor's holy sumbol, so maybe they'd have the Circle of Tears, or a bone dagger marked somewhere on their skin.

I mean, Durge's origin pretty much covers everything they'd bring to the table, so it's obsolete, but the thought stays in my head:

The first generation Bhaalspawn did reproduce: Abazigal had at least one son; Yaga-Shura was attempting to create half-giant progeny; most of the romance epilogues feature children (this was intentional, the original BG3 was supposed to have Charname's child as the protagonist, apparently). There were hundreds of Bhaalspawn who reached adulthood; many of them would've had the opportunity to marry or have children, knowingly or accidentally.

I've said this before, but again, the offspring of a quasi-deity and a mortal is a tiefling, genasi or aasimar and the divine blood may go dormant and activate generations down the line too. It's also not unknown for the planetouched to become pawns in their ancestor's games, and entire lineages (not simply the first half-outsider child alone) may be created intentionally.

Notably, Abazigal's son Draconis - a grandchild of Bhaal, and not a demigod - was not part of the giant prophecy his father, aunts and uncles were drowning the world in blood over (except as a pawn of his own half-mortal father, anyway). These planetouched mortal children would've been passed over unharmed and unnoticed (too unimportant on the divine stage). I wonder how many of Bhaal's grandchildren and great-grandchildren are running around? How many cousins might Orin have? How many nieces and nephews might have Bhaal's strings tied around them? Is resist Durge going to leave behind their sister/niece drama only to run into another one in the future?

(I am aware that it appears BG3 has ignored/handwaved away the existence/possibility of these guys: I don't care. BG2 left these plot threads and I will be taking then and running off with it.)

god i love a time travel fic, theyre always so fun, esp when its pre-relationship characters meeting their future established-relationship selves. i think theres enough really really good fics of that nature already out there though, so my one is actually the opposite! a sanji from six years in the future gets devil-fruit-ed back to the merry, where he and zoro are still together. the initial idea focused on the present timeline and zoro trying to stop the breakup before it happens, but i found exploring what could cause them to break up and the fallout of that + going back to your present after having just seen how much love you used to have more interesting. snapshot of said breakup:

Zoro flinches. He presses back in almost as quickly, kissing Sanji again in the hopes of distracting him. It’s too late, though. He’s already been putting it off too long. Sanji pulls away. “I just need some time,” Zoro says with frustration. He grips Sanji's arms to keep him from retreating further.  “Zoro…” “I'm not used to it, that's all, I just need a little more time, Cook!” Desperation curls at the edges of his voice and Sanji feels so much worse.  “We can't keep doing this. It's messing with everyone now.” “I love you.” “I—” A deep breath. Recenter. No distractions. “You know it's not about that. You resent me.” “The fuck I do.” “Maybe not yet, but you will. I understand, too, I—” “It wasn't your fault.” “It doesn't matter! Don’t fucking patronise me! We both know it doesn't matter how it happened, just that it happened. I don't want you to hate me. I don't want to fester in this for years, your resentment and my guilt, and the only thing we have left is bitter and ugly. We deserve better than that. You need to let me go.” “I lo—” “Let me go, Zoro. We can come back from this, for the crew, as crew, but only if we stop now,” he does a poor job of keeping his voice even. His next words are a pleading whisper. “Don't make me hate you.” Zoro blinks once and the wet sheen in his eye is gone. His mouth is a hard line when he nods, short and jerky. He lets Sanji go. It's the worst thing he's had to feel in his entire adult life.
