I first discovered Reuben’s work on instagram during the 2020 pandemic, shortly after the death of George Floyd. His work surrounding racial injustice was inspiring, and spoke to many people to help begin the conversation around the subject. 

It was since then I started to become a big fan of his work, mostly his current affairs work. These varied around different topics from the importance to stay at home during the pandemic, along with the infamous “Party Gate” at Downing Street in which he portrays two police officers raiding number 10.

It was only recently I found out he was part of the team that created one of my famous billboard advertisements for the BBC tv series, Draclua. Where 3D wooden stakes are used with a lamp shining as the daylight leaves a Dracula shadow appears. Reuben has also worked with Adidas, Transport for London and most recently Arsenal Football Club.

THIS IS HOME: a Reuben Dangoor mural. 

Above Big Papa’s Peri Peri on Holloway Road stands a mural featuring Arsenal symbols and figures, past and present. It’s big. It’s red. It’s got a big cannon on it. 

Herbert Chapman and Unai Emery can be seen looking over a large sheet of plans. David ‘Rocky’ Rocastle giving the thumbs up. Ian Wright’s beaming in bruised banana bearing a bright smile sitting atop the cannon.

There’s also Bernd Leno, rolling balls across to the foot of the cannon, in front of Sead Kolašinac. Daniëlle van de Donk painting ‘Victoria Concordia Crescit’ on tippy-toe. Mesut Özil locking and loading. And the triumvirate of Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Vivianne Miedema, ready to shoot on sight. It bangs. 

A massive Arsenal fan himself, illustrator Reuben Dangoor was commissioned by adidas to produce the mural, to coincide with the launch of Arsenal’s 2019-20 home kit. Dangoor is also best known for his pieces celebrating the best of modern British culture and music, as well as pointed political and social commentary.
