Opinion: we need to stop making fun of sephora kids and instead acknowledge that literal nine-year-old kids are learning at such a young age that they already have to preserve their youth and fight signs of 'early aging' while not even being a TEENAGER. like that’s genuinely insane to me. at that age, the only skincare they should be using is water and sunscreen. the real problem here is that literal children are so terrified of aging that they have full-blown sobbing fits when you deny them a 100-dollar-drunk elephant retinol.

i'm fascinated by the "Sephora kids" gen alpha phenomenon going on.
"kids don't have places to go anymore! stop hating kids!!!" claire's still exists?? boxed lunch??? hot topic which is like 80% kids stuff and disney anyways. game stores??? bookstores with the game/toy sections??? girl why are these children not reading manga or eating cookies in the food court or looking at CLOTHES?
i never would've been allowed to just run around alone in a mall if i was 9-10. that's insane. then i also would NEVER have gotten away with destroying shit, being rude to employees, rude to other customers??? this is a failing of PARENTS.
also like...... uh. when i was a teenager who was allowed to run around the mall, i couldn't even get away with hanging out with my friends in the massive glass elevator and being funny with adults (we greeted people like we were flight attendants with smiles, and pushed the button for the floor we weren't on) WITHOUT mall security coming after 20 minutes and threatening to kick us out lol. how was i almost kicked out of the mall for just being nice to people and giggling with friends on an elevator while these children are making "potions" and not getting tossed out?
also these kids buying like, a bunch of shit on a card -- i remember that i could barely use my "allowance card" from USAA when I first got it bc people kept assuming i was too young to have a real debit card. if they have mom or dad's credit card, ask for their id. lmao just start asking for their ID!!! if their parents aren't house training them that doesn't mean they can't learn.
they're 9 and buying retinol???? actives??? who are these little rich clueless children??? do they really exist? but i saw a lot of viral "christmas lists" go around this year with designer and luxury shit and i'm like...???

My mom just tried to tell me (in front of my 10-year-old brother, no less) that 30 is old and oh my fucking God I hate living in a culture that makes a monster out of aging I HATE IT
Getting older is a privilege and when I turn 30 and 40 and 50 and so on I’m gonna celebrate and I sure as hell am NOT gonna tell impressionable children that it’s “only downhill from here” or whatever the popular narrative is these days
Don’t even get me started on the demonization of the physical effects of aging lol there are 11-year-olds using fucking RETINOL now because of this disgusting culture we’ve been roped into and if that doesn’t scare the shit out of you you should probably reevaluate
I’m tired of the pessimism and I’m tired of the capitalist exploitation of that pessimism for profit
I’m so fucking tired

Hot take, but I do not think 10 years old children should buy retinol, or be near a Sephora. Where are their parents?! Mine would have given me the lecture of my life if I did half of the stuff they are doing

The world is headed towards catastrophes. Politicians are being shot. Wars are raging in places that we thought would never experience bloodshed again. My father's colleague's home no longer exists — bombed to the ground, just fire-blackened bricks tossed around. Small children and innocent women are being r*ped by adult soldiers. People are dying of hunger and illnesses. My friend — a young woman — returns home, to a war-torn country. We keep overworking ourselves to death just to earn enough money to put some food into our mouths. Healthcare is inaccessible. A new wave of dictatorships and police states is looming over our heads like a Big Brother. Exhaustion seeps into our bones like an infection.
“The new fashion trends you must try in 2024!” “Orgasmic blowjob tips to make your man explode.” “You need to try this new mascara!” “Ten reasons why men love large breasts.” “Retinol has many skin benefits — here’s how to use it.” “Try this exercise to get the booty of your dreams.” “Best protein powders to lose weight.” “Why is everyone obsessed with buccal fat?” “My newest XYZ shopping haul.”

Swedish pharmacy bans sale of anti-ageing skincare to children (Miranda Bryant, The Guardian, March 20 2024)
"A leading chain of Swedish chemists is introducing age restrictions on anti-ageing skincare amid rising concerns across Europe over the potentially damaging effects on children of their turning to such products prematurely.
Apotek Hjärtat, which has about 390 pharmacies in Sweden, is to stop selling “advanced skin care” products (including the ingredients AHA acid, BHA acid, vitamin A, vitamin C and enzyme peeling) to customers under 15 unless they have parental consent or a relevant skin condition.
It comes amid reports of a skincare boom among children in Sweden aged under 13, driven by social media.
One beauty chain told broadcaster SVT that 20-40% of its customers are now aged under 13.
Anecdotal accounts indicate growing numbers of children across Europe – including those as young as 10 in the UK – are also turning to expensive anti-ageing skincare in pursuit of more “youthful” skin, many influenced by what they have seen on apps like TikTok.
Experts fear the craze could be having a detrimental physical impact on such young skin and are concerned about the psychological impact of children obsessing over ageing.
The European Commission last year announced plans to limit the concentration of retinol in over-the-counter products from June to cut potential overexposure to vitamin A, which regulators have linked to skin disorders and weakened bones."

Vitamin A plays a crucial role in preventative medicine by supporting various aspects of health and wellness. Some of the key functions of vitamin A in the body include:
1. Vision: Vitamin A is essential for maintaining healthy vision, particularly in low-light conditions. It is a key component of rhodopsin, a protein in the retina that helps the eyes adjust to changes in light intensity.
2. Immune function: Vitamin A is important for supporting the immune system and helping the body fight off infections. It plays a role in the development and function of immune cells, such as T cells and B cells.
3. Skin health: Vitamin A is beneficial for skin health, as it helps maintain the integrity of the skin and mucous membranes. It supports the growth and repair of skin cells and may help reduce inflammation and promote healing.
4. Growth and development: Vitamin A is essential for normal growth and development, especially in children. It plays a role in cell growth, differentiation, and gene expression, which are important processes for overall growth and development.
5. Reproductive health: Vitamin A is important for reproductive health in both men and women. It is involved in the production of sperm and the development of the placenta during pregnancy.
Some examples of vitamin A-rich foods include:
1. Liver: Liver (such as beef liver or chicken liver) is one of the richest sources of vitamin A, providing high levels of preformed vitamin A in the form of retinol.
2. Sweet potatoes: Sweet potatoes are a good source of beta-carotene, a precursor of vitamin A that the body can convert into retinol.
3. Carrots: Carrots are another excellent source of beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A.
4. Spinach: Spinach and other dark leafy greens are rich in beta-carotene and provide a good source of vitamin A.
5. Eggs: Eggs contain vitamin A in the form of retinol, as well as other important nutrients.
Including vitamin A-rich foods in your diet can help ensure that you meet your daily requirements for this essential nutrient and support overall health and wellness. It's important to consume a balanced diet that includes a variety of foods to meet your nutritional needs.

there’s this specific type of male that is attracted to fitness that is just so………..i want to kill them instantly
like as an example at crossfit yday there was this ultra-jacked husband of one of my classmates (he’s not a crossfitter or member afaik, just a husband of a crossfitter).
to start off with, he was going around the entire time trying to be playfully distracting to his wife like physically touching her the entire time she wasn’t actively running or lifting. she was trying to pay attention to the coach.
and he went around loudly asking the other men in the class questions that were basically just a dick-measuring contest about areas of fitness and all of his accomplishments or whatever.
and then he was trying to show off on the bars and kept talking loudly about who fucking cares what but just. such an arrogant dude, really already was under my skin before the clock even started
a peacocker, basically. peacocking like it was his shitting career
so after class everyone was totally wiped out and cooling down, and it came up in general convo that the world record for the fastest 2-mile had been broken recently by Ingebrigtsen
Mr. Husband immediately bellows “WHO’S GONNA RUN 2 MILES WITH ME” and kept annoyingly arrogantly badgering everyone in the room to do it until his exhausted wife (who had also been tending to their 2 babies DURING CLASS while he did ????? we just dont know) looked over at the other women nearby and rolled her eyes and went “yknow, he’s gonna keep doing that, and yet he knows i’m gonna be the one that HAS to say yes.”
so in the end he made his exhausted wife—after a particularly difficult one-hour class, where she had been deadlifting at near 100% capacity, and where she had also been pausing intermittently to tend to her children—oh, and this same woman btw had JUST been in conversation with another woman near me about how she was forced to skip her bloodwork appointment the previous day bc “the family” wanted to go to the pool and was simultaneously worried about a suspicious lump on her collarbone—this asshole forced her to run 2 miles with him and time it.
i didn’t stay long enough to see the result but god fucking damn i hate men so much oh my fuckign christ
it must be incredible to have that level of entitlement. you’d never have a single worry on earth. entirely smooth retinol brain of a male

I know it's probably a dumb question, but I cannot understand the parents of the 10 year olds that wear make up now. Why are you allowing your child to drop money on useless and potentially harmful stuff. Why are you giving money to your child to buy skincare.
My parents wouldn't have allowed me to do that either (despite being very liberal and my mom wearing much more make up than the average woman in my country at that time), this is why I'm confused. My mom also explained to me (and she didn't do a day in high school) that these products were for adults and could ruin my skin or cause me allergy if I used them. She asked me why I wanted to wear make up (and I was 13), I said because I thought it was fun and she agreed. But full face(and full face over a decade ago isn't the full face we have now!)was still a no-no, I couldn't go to school with lipstick on for example.
If I had children I def wouldn't allow my 10 year old to do a 14 step skincare. I'd ask myself why she feels like she needs all of these products and then I'd have a conversation with her about it, maybe have a dermatologist explain to her that no, she doesn't need retinol or whatever that shit is going on.
A 14 year old wanting to try some makeup? Sure, experimenting and trying different things is a part of being a teen. Not that I would agree, but ok, just don't go to school wearing 30 layers of it, when it will be awful because it's 30C with 86% of humidity most likely she will reach my conclusions on her own.
But 10 is a very very different age to be into this kind of thing, and there is something very very wrong with young children playing skincare.

The amount of kids I see coming in buying Drunk Elephant products is insane. These kids who look like they are between 12-15 years old are buying expensive retinol products at Sephora. I do try and tell them that Drunk Elephant has put out a statement that children should not be using these products and it can burn their skin because they are so young. I wish they would make it where adults 18+ cannot buy them on their own. It would help a lot if parents would monitor their kids better and keep them off TikTok. They have the worse toxic trends.
Social media and influencers
Toxic mindset you have look young no matter what
Same way I saw this 10 year old on tik tok doing skin care routine saying she using xyz to prevent wrinkles l, crows feet’s, and de-aging
Like sweetie you are 10 years old you won’t get wrinkles noooo time soon.

The fact that children and teenagers are using shit like retinol, vitamin C serums, hyaluronic acids, etc. is wild because apparently according to dermatologists none of those are meant to be used by anyone under 30 (unless prescribed by a board certified dermatologist for whatever reason)
If you're under 30 years old and have not been prescribed a specific product by a board certified dermatologist, your only "skincare" routine should be washing your face once to twice a day with regular soap and water, and applying a sunscreen of at least spf 30 every two hours between 10 AM and 4 PM
