A day in a life of RonToto: Germany & France (Part 1)
RonToto after their Vienna sojourn are finding themselves in Germany and for a while in France: (from top left) an old house and now a five-star hotel in Colmar, the St. Martin’s Cathedral, a boat ride along the Ill, at the foot of German poet Friedrich Schiller’s statue, the suite hotel where RonToto stayed, another timber house in Strasbourg, the Residenzschloss in Rastatt, and crashing at the wedding reception in a Stuttgart palace
After we solved the case in Vienna, and bc we did a lot of running here and there, unmasking our rich client’s long-lost lover, who happened to be a stage actor (I will tell the whole story soon, promise), he gifted us train tickets to Baden-Württemberg and the neighboring cities in France.
Ron and I visited the towns of Ludwigsburg, Stuttgart, Strasbourg, stayed a bit longer in Colmar, and then to a quaint little “baroque” city called Rastatt.
Lots of train rides, which fascinated me most of all as Germany and France in this region is only separated by a river in between, the Rhine. But wowza! The number of people who wanted to cross France on our third day was a lot. People were seated on the stairs and the hallways. It would be either be a disaster and a blessing. Just imagine if it were the time of COVID-19. Well, I am not a doctor but a police officer and I dare not to think about the possibility. Japan was in trouble when they pursued hosting the Olympics in 2020. I just read that the water quality of the river Seine was so terrible that they cancelled the triathlon the other day.
Anyway, we crashed a wedding reception in Stuttgart. Was not our intention though. The groom mistook me as a friend from middle school in an international school in Tokyo. Ron was so amused we had been offered a table and got to toast with the newlyweds for the new chapter in their lives. Two young women tried to flirt with Ron, which sort of ruined my day, but became hilarious though. Bc as soon as Ron deduced them they couldn’t wait to get away from him. Heh!
As soon as we reached Colmar while we waited for our hotel suite to be ready, we decided to go for a boat ride along the Lauch, which is connected to the Ill River that also flows in Strasbourg. Ron was also able to tick a box on his wretched list of what he wanted to do. Want to know what that is? Sitting on top of one of the half-timber roofs and sipping his black sugar syrup. I was so embarrassed but the owner let him get away with it. Lucky him.
On our second and final day in Colmar, there was a scheduled city trip around the town. Colmar is the city that is supposed to be the inspiration for Hayao Miyazaki’s “Howl’s Moving Castle’s” Ingary. It was a charming little town with the half-timber houses. So picturesque. That’s the word I learned from Ron. Stemmed from the 17th century it wormed its way to English language that could mean that the scene resembles a picture, evokes aesthetics and vivid. The old town feels like a museum, but many of them are still used either as a hotel or restaurant or both.
Rastatt is near the famous Baden-Baden. A small town that houses baroque palaces. It was a Monday when we visited it so not too many people were strolling around as museums were closed. Haha! That’s so nice to know.
Ron said we are going to make another stop in Europe until we are back to Tokyo for another client request. This is the first time I heard Amamiya was actually happy on the phone when I talked to her. Though one could never be sure.

Ruine Schauenburg
My hike in July took me to the South side of Oberkirch, while on the North side sit the ruins of Schauenburg castle. It's a short, but steep, climb from town centre (or you can drive up).
The castle was built at the end of the 11th century by the Duke of Swabia. It saw action mainly in disputes between local lords, most notably after much of the land around the castle was sold to the Margrave of Baden-Baden, around 35 km to the North. It became a ruin following a French invasion in 1689.
Today, a restaurant sits beside the ruin. When I was last there, there was a camera stand to take a clean selfie - you know, the one where you set a timer instead of holding at arm's length. That's where my photo on my professional website comes from.
As is the case from the South side, the castle has a good view of the Rhine plains, and Strasbourg cathedral sticks out. It would have stuck out even more back in the day, without the modern tower blocks. The lords of Schauenburg would have seen the massive gothic cathedral and its monumental spire being built... over the course of a few centuries.
#Germany#Black Forest#Deutschland#Schwarzwald#Oberkirch#Schauenburg#medieval#castle#ruins#this was a significant visit for me#I'll explain in the next post#clue's in the date though#2020-02

T9 Ahoi

The Enchanting Lichtenstein Castle
History Today we look at the picturesque Lichtenstein Castle, located on a cliff overlooking the Echaz Valley in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The castle’s location adds to its fairy-tale appearance and provides breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. It remains a stunning example of the blend between literature and architecture, inspired by Wilhelm Hauff’s novel "Lichtenstein," and brought to life by Count Wilhelm of Württemberg between 1840 and 1842.
Image attribution - Martha Sales
Hauff’s novel romanticized the ideals of medieval chivalry and heroism. The 19th century experienced a resurgence in interest in medieval history and architecture, a trend known as historicism. Count Wilhelm sought to create a physical embodiment of the novel's themes and settings. Neuschwanstein Castle itself was influenced by similar romantic and historicist ideals and a 2009 filming of "Dornröschen" - The Sleeping Beauty - further cemented Lichtenstenstein's place in popular culture. The family of the Dukes of urach which began when Wilhem was granted the title maintains ownership to this day. The castle serves both as a private residence for the family and a public attraction, allowing visitors to explore its historical and architectural significance.
What You Will See When you visit, you'll find the striking castle keep, complete with turrets and battlements that offer fantastic views of the surrounding Echaz Valley. The interior of Lichtenstein Castle is adorned with period furnishings, weapons, and armor, providing visitors with a glimpse into the romanticized vision of medieval life. Guided tours are available.

Where To Eat During your visit to the castle, there are several excellent dining options nearby. Restaurants such as Forellenhof Rössle and Albgasthof Lichtenstein offer delicious local cuisine and hospitality. For dessert, you can visit Bäckerei Konditorei Padeffke in Reutlingen, which is renowned for its delightful pastries and cakes. Though as you can imagine, there's more than one bakery. Accomodation For accommodation, one of the most liked places to stay in Honau is the Forellenhof Rössle, which offers cozy rooms and great dining. Its proximity to Lichtenstein Castle makes it a convenient and charming option for visitors. Places Nearby Hohenzollern Castle: Located about 40 kilometers away, Hohenzollern is one of Germany's most iconic castles. It’s perfect for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy exploring nature and engaging in activities such as hiking and spelunking. It’s a great family-friendly attraction that offers a unique underground adventure. Day Trips Stuttgart: The capital of Baden-Württemberg is approximately 60 kilometers from Lichtenstein. Stuttgart has a vibrant cultural scene and is famous for its automotive museums, including the Mercedes-Benz Museum and the Porsche Museum. The city also boasts beautiful parks, such as Schlossgarten and Rosenstein Park. For a most liked place to stay, consider the Motel One Stuttgart-Mitte, offering modern amenities, a central location, and reasonable rates. For accommodations, consider Hotel Krone Tübingen, boasting with modern comfort and a central location. Of course, you could always do what we do and look up potential AirBnBs in the area.
