8/19/23 Update
Hi tumblr,
I haven't started school yet, so there hasn't been much to update on. I'm not sure if I talked about my classes for the fall, but I registered for Chem-100 and Biol-107. These are both online courses. I initially was gonna take Chem in-person, but after remembering what it was like going to school last semester, I decided to try to get an online class. My school is a 45 minute drive from my house... I can't drive yet so I have to take the bus which just makes this even longer. They often DID NOT follow their schedule and drivers would just take off if no one was there. Like bro...you're 10 mins early...YEAH NO ONE IS THERE YET. People would complain, nut the drivers suck and would still just take off. Also...LOTS of weirdos on the bus. So, I've opted out.
It was hard to get this Chem class though. It said they had openings, but that it was also waitlisted. Waitlisted usually means that it is full, which this class was not. I really wanted this class, so I could be more flexible so I asked a few people. I asked the professor of the class who never got back to me. I asked admissions who at first told me it's waitlisted and I have to wait... like girl I know you didn't read my email because I said it's waitlisted but also shows open seats... so I emailed admissions again saying something along those lines and then they got me connected with someone who works on the STEM courses. She was able to help me and I finally got in! All the people I asked and they either didn't give a shit or just completely ignored me.
The lesson I learned from this is that if you want something you need to go for it and that people really don't care, so again if you want it you need to put that effort in because no one will do it for you. No one cares as much as you do.
I can't wait for when I'm an RT in a couple years. Time are so tough right now, and I won't even lie those checks would be life changing. I know school will be tough, but I have to get out of this. I hate living like this. We're not even check to check. We're hoping for a miracle every time.
Some more related to RT would be that I finished my general ed more the degree! 7 classes were required and I got 3 A's, 2 B's, and 2 C's. The C's were from when I first started school during the pandemic and I had also just graduated and was dealing with some health issues. I've grown, persevered, and learnt from my mistakes while in school. My grades have been better and I'm proud of myself :)
Now I'm working on the prerequisites for the program. There are 3 and I got one done so far: algebra with a B. I need Biol 107 and Chem 100. I'm so excited to see this all filled out and feel the pride in my chest of knowing that there were tough and sleepless night but I pushed through and will be closer to having a fulfilling career which allows me to live my life the way I want to live it.
That's actually one of the things that drew me to RT was the flexibility and pay. I want to be able to spend half to more than half of my time not working. I want that work life balance that RT can provide. I've had my fair share of health issues. Lots of testing and procedures. I know it can be scary and you're very vulnerable at those moments. I was lucky to have staff that cared for me and helped make those moments less scary. I would like to be able to give the same experience to others. I also have family with COPD and asthma. I have asthma as well. I've had some really bad attacks. I'll work hard to give my patients the best care that I would have wanted for my family or myself.
I know I'll make an excellent RT. I've also considered pediatrics since I have a background with kids and honestly love working with children.
Well that's it for now. Not huge updates, but still some new thing in my life and on my mind.

Trying this again…happy Respiratory Care Week to all the Respiratory Therapists out there. COVID tried to take us out, but we are still standing strong by the grace of God. Hug your work family & enjoy this special week. If you know an RT, take a second to honor them this week. It will mean more to them than you will ever know. ❤️
@okiegungirl my ride or die, soul sister, partner in crime. Work would not be the same without you.

Hi everyone!
I'm starting this tumblr to document my journey to hopefully becoming a respiratory therapist!
I finished a prerequisite for my program this summer term: PSYC-101 as well as a class that wasn't needed, but may end up being helpful ALDH-139. ALDH-139 is Medical Terminology. I registered for it as I knew I wanted to go into the medical field, however I wasn't sure what route I wanted to go. I either wanted to go for respiratory therapy, sonography, or medical assisting/phlebotomy. The 139 class was needed for medical assisting, but it may be helpful in future classes.
(I'm really proud of myself this term. It wasn't easy taking two 6-week courses, but I DID IT!!! I GOT As IN BOTH! I TURNED IN EVERY SINGLE ASSIGNMENT AND DID EXTRA CREDIT!!)
I haven't been admitted into the program yet, however that is also part of what will be documented. Hopefully my struggles can help someone else who is looking into joining this field. I'm nervous and unsure of how things will go, but I'm going to try anyway because I know why I'm doing this. To give myself and my loved ones a better life.
So, stick around for the journey if you'd like, and hopefully see me at the end of it all as an RRT!

#COVID19
I’ve been trying to put into words for a little bit now how I feel about being a frontline healthcare worker during this whole COVID-19 crisis. My feelings on the matter are mixed, but there are a few points I’d really like to make to drive home regarding what it is that, at least I, am facing everyday. Let me preface this by saying that I am a newly hired paramedic working for two really busy metropolitan services. In a 12 hour shift, I average 7-9 calls during ‘normal’ times. Often times, I work OT, pushing my shifts to 13-14 hours daily. Every call I wonder what I’m going to be going into. Sometimes it’s a nice old lady who just needs a check up for her blood pressure; other times I’m running head first into a multiple gunshot, multiple patient scenario and people’s lives are immediately affected by the care I render. Now we have this looming fear of #COVID19. I want to impress upon you that COVID19, while new, is not unlike other diseases that we, as healthcare workers, already need to be cautious of. We have patients with MRSA, VRE, C Diff, tuberculosis, pneumonia, HIV, etc, all of which are communicable that we need to wear appropriate protection for. What’s scary about COVID19 is not the fact that it’s a disease, but the fact that it’s a disease that we know very little about. It presents in so many different ways and we are still trying so hard to understand how the disease is transmitted and how it affects us. It’s our inability to know if we are prepared or not that scares me. Our protocols update so often regarding our protection and how we run our calls. The minimum PPE changes all the time. The availability of stock, what we wear, how we wear it, when we wear, and how we reverse isolate our patients changes all the time. We change our course of treatment - asthmatics now get IM epinephrine only, be cautious when you ventilate someone, don’t suction someone unless you’re wearing the appropriate PPE, what’s the appropriate PPE? All of this is stuff that is constantly evolving in the course of our care, day-to-day, and sometimes hour to hour. I’m scared for my family. I’m scared that I might bring COVID19 home to the people I love. I’m scared because I may not have donned the right PPE, or that someone may have lied to me during the screening process, or I forgot to wash my hands while doffing. I’m scared because I may be asymptomatic and bring it home to my mom, my brother, or my girlfriend. I’m scared of passing it along to the little old lady at the grocery store, or to the barista who’s trying to manage her student loans during this ‘unprecedented’ crisis. I’m frustrated. “Essential workers” are being heralded as ‘heroes.’ People are donating food and PPE, they’re buying us coffee, they’re standing in the streets and applauding us and standing on their balconies clanging their pots and pans in appreciation. In one breath, they thank us, and in the next, they tell us they don’t care. People tell us they don’t care by going out and getting their coffees, or by going to the beach to sun bath, or spread blankets in parks and have beers with their friends. We ‘heroes’ are asking you to do one thing. STAY. HOME. Don’t martyr us to make yourselves feel better about having a beer in a park. Your thank yous are empty because your actions show that you don’t appreciate the work that we are doing to keep you safe. I’m frustrated because what we are doing hasn’t changed. We have always responded to the dangerous unknowns. We have always taken care of other people. We will hold your grandmother’s hand while she dies. We will try desperately to save your little brother as he clings desperately to life just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. We will work tirelessly to make sure you have a second chance after making a poor decision that we know you immediately regretted. That’s what we do. But it’s taken a global pandemic to realize just how thin we are being stretched and how unappreciated we are. I’m sad because this pandemic has started to expose people for what they are. Selfish. Short-sighted. Uncaring. People would rather go to the park, get laid, get a coffee, drink a beer, send their kids to school, visit their friends, and party than stay home. I understand. It’s frustrating staying inside all day. I don’t enjoy bouncing between work and home. I can’t go out. I can’t vent my frustrations about my day by doing the things I would normally do. I would love nothing more than to go to the gym, roll on the BJJ mats, or rock climb again. I would love to sit at a coffee shop with my girlfriend and just hold hands and talk about whatever dumb shit we think about. But I can’t. Because this disease is new and it’s dangerous. Because, while it may not kill me, it could kill someone I love. It could kill the very people that I go into work every day to try and save. So please, stay home. Wear a mask. Listen to what the experts are saying. Because this disease is very real. In the last month, I have fought my hardest and lost 24 people to COVID19. I have had to look spouses, children, parents, and friends in the eye and tell them that their loved one is dead or might die. And that’s just me. My brothers and sisters in healthcare and first response see hundreds everyday. And you can’t be bothered to try and home school your kids or sit home and watch Netflix. Stay. Home.

BLUEberry muffins😛
.
. This social distancing/quarantining thing is really stressful. We tried to go skate around our home and literally got stopped by the cops because supposedly the public parks are closed. But then the kids at the fucking batting cages next to us werent stopped by them!?! Theres two of us and five of them!?! How is that fair? Or the same! Whatever though. So hard to get exercise at this time.
Also, I am a respiratory therapist at the only hospital within an hour in all directions and they legit sent me home and said “the state told us we can’t have PRNs” on the schedule”. They would rather be shorthanded because our PMRs are not high enough and send me home (i work full time hours every week) than have me there to help in this time of need. Its seriously crazy.
