Doing research using semi-structured interviews is all well and good until it comes to the point you have to transcribe the bastards.

Turns out I cannot physically listen to my own voice without wanting to die.

Simon Conner: Ancient Egyptian Statues. Their many lives and deaths. Cairo 2022.

Am enjoying the book immensely, especially his focus on agency and use life - a good introduction which offers a lot of contextual information. Overall quite refreshing.

How do you keep your readings (articles, books) organized for future reference? Like, when you're done reading a paper, what do you do with it so that when you want to return to it later, you'll be able to find it again?

so I put all the papers I read in Zotero and use tags to keep things accessible (because I can NEVER remember authors, no matter how many times my advisor refers to them by name)

when I remember, I'll attach the marked-up version of the PDF with all my notes (I historically use Goodnotes, but I'm not pleased with some of their business decisions lately and am taking suggestions on alternatives, ESPECIALLY self-hosted [I run a home server hahahaha])

for really important papers I (use the department's printer to) print them out and mark them up by hand, then put them in a pile where I probably never look at them again until it's time to write a literature review section of something

I'm slowly catching up on things and updating my various collection posts. So far, I've updated My Tarot & Oracle Collection and Works I've Read, so next is going to be Currently Reading & Queue.

I'm also looking forward to sharing my notes from the book I'm currently studying from, which discusses witchcraft from a primarily anthropological perspective, with respect to areas often overlooked by anthropologists as well. It's a nice blend of history and anthropology and has given me a lot to think about in terms of how witchcraft has become what it is today based on history and more recent resurgence.

Anyways, I'll share that in a proper review once I get to that point. :)

Travelling to the UK for a conference in a few months... frustratingly a lot of museums I haven't visited (yet) are barely reachable by public transport.

It's a minor issue, though! I'm very excited to go and meet some colleagues I have not seen in a long time.

I might also add a few photographs from my previous travels in the coming months to this blog as I am currently sorting through them :)

why does every farming/life sim game have a different fishing mechanic and no tutorial for it. you pull out your fishing pole and click on the water and the next thing you know hieroglyphics are flying around everywhere, there's a timer in the bottom right counting down from 47.4, and the whole screen is shaking violently and flashing red every time you move your mouse

Just in case anyone needs a history lesson:

The nazi salute IS the roman salute. Because. They specifically chose to use... the roman salute. To invoke the grandiose and history of the roman empire. Like. That was a specific choice they made when they were creating their empire. They didn't call it a nazi salute. THE NAZIS CALLED IT A ROMAN SALUTE.

They did not happen to create a salute that looks identical. They said "we like the roman salute because the romans created the idea of fascism, so we are going to use it." Fascism, if you didn't know, is derived from the ROMAN word for a symbol called the Fasces. It represents the ultimate power of a single leader over their subjects! I wonder why that would be really appealing for them as a symbol!

They were ALSO taking a little inspiration from us, Americans, because we were also using it in the early part of the 1900s!

Because Americans ALSO liked the whole "connection to the roman empire" part! If you think white people NOW have a boner for the roman empire, you should have seen them a century ago!

Americans, understandably, stopped using it, because we got in a war with the only other people who were using it more than we were and were creating some real fucked-up associations with it: THE NAZIS.
