Enfield said Hyde "carried on...like Satan" in the first chapter, and then the maid says he "carried on... like a madman" when he killed Carew. The way it changes connotation from "this guy isn't human" to "this guy is one of us gone wrong" at the exact time the boundaries between Jekyll and Hyde started to blur. The way that seemingly insignificant change of words completely changes the nature of what Hyde is-- from satanic spawn to regrettably human. I hate you robert louis stevenson you make being an author look easy.

let’s be real, if any of us actually ended up in a fandom universe (you know those stories, where some modern girl obsessed with the latest and greatest queer ship gets sent to hogwarts or whatever and tries to save the world) we’d fuck it up SO QUICKLY. at least i know i would, i would take one look at the new universe and ask “is anyone going to make things worse?” and not wait for an answer. oh no i cant use my real name for reasons? yeah now i’m ebony dementia darkness raven way and no one can stop me. i’m mysterious and unknown. i speak in riddles. i can and will kill people for fun. fixing the timeline? no, fucking the timeline.

tons of cool medieval-style chapter illustrations by the author

#the west passage #aroaessidhe 2024 reads #ooooh this is really interesting!!!#it’s like. you take those weird medieval illustrations and add some eldritch horrors and some alice-in-wonderland weirdness #and turn it into a strange fable-like adventure #it took me a little to get into it - I wasn’t sure about the writing style or characters initially- but it grew on me!#There’s very little detail about the world in the beginning but once I got a bit more into it and was like oh there’s just #weird and quirky little guys scattered all over this.#I was having trouble envisioning things and looked up the author half way through to find his art for it!#(I listened to the audiobook so was unaware there are also illustrations in the book) - that definitely refined my understanding of the vib #I didn’t actually have a look at all the chapter illustrations in the book til after and oh my god - obsessed #There’s so many of them and they’re perfect. I also enjoy the chapter titles.#And I think it’s one of those books that (for me) could teeter on the edge of like or dislike depending on surface level elements #and it went in the right direction 👍#there’s a tiny bit of romance (or: a relationship that has a romantic element) but not very much. and it is queer #also the worldbuilding kinda reminded me of keys to the kingdom (vaguely)#but like if the House was less populated and ur just following a random denizen who knows nothing travelling around. i should reread kttk #I know it means Ladies like Saints. but also every time my mind reads it as *sleasey man voice* ladiesss #oh also moment of appreciation for kuri huang cover art too

Definitely! (though I warn you, I'm fundamentally incapable of reading only one thing at a time)

For physical books, I'm currently reading The Warden by Daniel M. Ford, the novelization of My Neighbour Totoro, and trying to keep up on Dracula Daily (i am failing this)

For audiobooks, I've been relistening to The Series of Unfortunate Events (because I never actually read them all when they were originally coming out) and I juuust finished This Census-Taker by China Miéville and Ogres by Adrian Tchaikovsky this weekend. I'm about to start A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers.

#i bounce between things a lot :P it all depends on *`~Vibes~`*#once i'm done The Warden i'll probably get started on SVSSS v4 #this census-taker and ogres were both strange little novellas i was trying to wrap up so i spent a lot of time this weekend #working on a puzzle and just finishing them #completely bizarre but both gave me a lot to think about they both had some very cool writing and themes #as for a series of unfortunate events i'm officially the farthest i've ever been in the series!#i reread the first 3 books a ton - whenever i was at my friends house and she was doing homework when i wasn't since she was collecting the #but i kinda fell off them after the carnivorous carnival #waiting a whole year for the next book is hard when you're in elementary school!#anyway i'm enjoying them a lot as an adult i'm picking up way more nuance than i did as a kid (obviously)#and snicket's writing it always fun no matter the age #thanks for asking! i love an excuse to ramble about books >:3

#this was the very first Big Kid series i read as a kid #in like first or second grade #i still remember it #you know how ve schwab talked about doors into reading in that tolkien lecture #the sisters grimm was my door #my first love post magic tree house/rainbow fairies-esque chapter books #puck was my first ever fictional crush i was so obsessed with him #in fact to this day i have such a weakness for curls and it honestly might be because of that brat (affectionate)#i wanted his room so bad as a kid #also the whole strange cocoon plotline gave me my thirst for angst and it's remained ever since #sisters grimm #part of me wants to do a reread but also i'm scared it won't hold up (also i have no time)
