THANK YOU so much for that detailed explanation. I have taken and had to pass/fail 😅 1 CS class (python) in undergrad and am hopeless so the details were very needed. I’m curious: are u software engineers or in the CS field?? I study industrial design, I took a few python classes a few years ago (mainly for data analysis). but I had a real long-term special interest in tech and computers (and video games lol) when I was a teenager, so that's when I first got into programming. I feel most comfortable in python, but I've learned a bit of c# for making games in unity, and obviously I've dipped my toes into CSS as well. oh and I've done some robotics projects with an Arduino (based on c++). i did consider studying CS but couldn't cope with a 100% stem degree without any "creative"/artsy elements lmao I don't have what it takes to be a phannie in stem

Heyy dear authoor, I dont know if you are taking question on these but I wanted to ask you about twine and coding. I’ve been interested in writing my own IF but vscode and twee and everything i’ve been reading so far got me super overwhelmed and I tried vscode and everything went red and error with templates I tried to use 😭 I was wondering what is your flow of coding the LAD and how did you started. How is story folders works, how do you structure the files and compile them
Anon... I'm shit at this but I'll try to help as much as I can.
Tbh, I touched a bit of everything before publishing anything. Idk how many games I started on renpy only to abandoned them because I was too lazy to continue and because I dunno how to draw and because I didn't know how to code it in a text only thing. Idk how many IF I started and are still gathering dust in my files and waiting to be rewritten properly, because I wanted to use choicescript at first but didn't understand a single thing lmaooo
I think templates are the most useful for a first IF, especially if you dunno anything about coding etc. I struggled a bit with mine at first (still am sometimes).
You also have to be sure to check if the template was updated for the latest version of twine and if you use the same story formats (SugarCube, Harlowe and... I don't remember the others). Make sure to check in the comments of the template you got too, sometimes some have answers to your potential questions.
My coding flow is a mess so anything I say will probably not help you. I knew some stuff before starting thanks to many attempt at publishing IF, even though I never published any until LAD. We're talking about maybe 2 years of attempts. So in the meantime during those attempts, I've watched some tutorials on ytb for exact stuff I needed, searched on google, on tumblr too (btw check @uroboros-if account, they have a lot of helpful stuff, that's where I found out how to deal with the pronouns, etc. and there's also @outoftheblue-if who knows much more than me (and I used one of their(?) templates! And @manonamora-if definitely will help you better if you got any question about twine!)
I think you should ask or search for the exact things you need. I did that most of the time and gathered it all somewhere in my files. Like, if you wanna know about how to code cycle choices, or how to deal with the pronouns of your ROs, or that kind of thing.
I doubt I've been helpful, but do feel free to head to my discord if you have more question about stuff!

previous anon here: dorian's predatory business practices are a lot like wattpad's if you know anything about that—they pocket a huge portion of the proceeds for every VN they publish and only give very few pennies to the actual authors, essentially using other people's work to line their own pockets, while pretending to provide a great platform for artists. Last I heard they also have terms that say whatever you upload to them becomes their property IP. it's the kind of situation where they convince artists its the easiest option for publishing a VN, when in reality there are other ways that are just as or even more simple that allow u to keep full ownership of ur work. I also have a grudge against them specifically because they bought up an indie VN studio that I was a fan of, put previously free stuff behind a paywall and otherwise ran it into the ground, and their social media people were very unprofessional and sent threatening messages to fans for making fan content.
Renpy takes some learning, but it's really simple once you know how it works. And besides renpy there are other VN engines that are even simpler (Unity even has a VN library called Fungus thats very simple and straightforward to use) TyranoBuilder is also a popular one. As for chapters, there are absolutely people on itchio updating their VNs a chapter at a time, although i dont know if its in the way youd want; pushing each separate chapters as updates to the main game, or releasing each chapter as a separate game come to mind as options.
(i'd honestly even offer to convert the game to renpy for you since ive been working extensively with renpy for the past 2 years and am very familiar with it and how to work it, if it meant i could save one artist from the clutches of dorian, but that feels too much like overstepping 😅)
So i am not sure if maybe they have changed things, but with games self published to them they own 0% of that IP so I will own Gravehearts 100% only if they where to buy it from me then they’d own it but i personally do not see that happening lmao. From what i understand about it is it is like Webtoons but for VNs anyone can upload to it but they still own it like how i still own Horizon Walkers even though it’s on Webtoons and Tapas. They do take a % of what you make so that is why I would love to also have my own app or game on itch as well!
I have a decent following for my artwork but who knows what that vendiagram is for people who like VNs is, so if i where to publish the game somewhere by itself i don’t know how well it would do because I don’t know if i have the audience for it, also i don’t know if people would even see it when i post about it cause social media sucks. So like posting HW to webtoons so that people who read comics might see it that’s what I am kind of hoping for with posting Gravehearts to Dorian.
Again with Gravehearts i own it 100%, with publishing games there you can chose when and where people pay for things, and people do paywall love interests and main story stuff but i fully do not intend to do that because I don't want to do that. So I will not be putting any main story or love interests behind paywalls the only thing I would do as paid stuff are optional scenes with a character where you can get a nice full art piece of them from it! (Im also trying to figure out if i could put some kind of code on the image so people can download high res versions of it as phone wallpapers! So you’re actually paying for something more tangible)
However like i said previously i would love to make my own app for it, or something like an app or on itch, but i could maybe try do it in tangent with Dorian, so people who don’t want to support them can still support the story somewhere else! But it might take a little while for me to be able to do something like that because it’d be learning a whole bunch of new stuff and it is just me but I will do my best 👍

You genuinely inspired me to make a Beatles dating sim. I'm working on it now, actually. Not the coding. Still gotta learn that. Story wise? Failing, but I'm getting there. Writing a Ringo route. (I'm looking at you, you know.) 😒
CBML was the first dating game I had ever played. Genuinely. I'd never really been a fan of them until I played yours. I've probably gone through the routes so, so so many times. I'm absolutely head over heels with this game. It made me feel so ecstatic. I love The Beatles with all my heart. And all of the routes had me on the edge of my seat. Other than the true route. What the fuck was that. I need answers as to why this was a good thing. Continuing on-! It was very well written. At one point I had to turn my laptop away to take a minute to ask, "what am I doing with my life?" To which destiny had me pulling the laptop back into my lap.
I LOVE your game. And your art, and your personality. Hell, I only got Tumblr recently and I already knew about you. You were everywhere.

If you are using renpy, it's really not that hard. There are a lot of tutorials online, and if you have any questions, forums and reddit has a lot of answers, or even people willing to help if you can't find anything. I didn't know coding either, but I figured it out!
I dont see how the true route was any worse than the others heheh... if anything its much more tame!
Yes, my prescense in Beatles online spaces makes me quite happy. I know there are people who hate me, but I am not ashamed of how I choose to portray and talk about the Beatles.
Regardless, I only aim to spread Beatles love. That's why I choose to make these games instead of just drawing self insert all the time. I think the Beatles are all nasty awful men but its been 7 years for me, and at the end of the day, they're real cute!

I just want to say I'm cackling at your april fools video, you did a fantastic job with everything from the sprite edits to the music and text! If you ever released the Renp'y script, I'd be over the moon.

I keep telling myself that I want to clean up the code, because I put things together really slapdash to get it done in time for April 1st.
The UI code that I wrote (which does actually handle things like character titles / sinner numbers, coloring the name box, showing the location name) is also functional but... messy!
I'm probably being too precious about it when it is essentially a joke project. If I try to "make it nice" I'll never finish, haha.

for those who don't know: each ace attorney characters have unique, very out-of-pocket animation for each character sprites when they get 'damage' / 'shocked' in court.
If TKP would also have the same thing:
Sam: Crumpled his ciggs box, proceeded to attempt to light it with a lighter that won't work before stopping himself because that's not allowed in the courtroom.
Eva: Whipped out and applied lipstick, it jumped out of her hands and she fumbled with it before she caught it and gripped it so tightly it snapped in two.
Morgan: Flipped frantically through his notebook, dripping cold sweat, before reading a page, then ripping it off to crumple and eat it whole.
De Leon: Typed something in their phone, grew more and more frantic until they pressed so forcefully that the screen cracked, and they jumped, fumbling as it jumped in their hands.
Oh how I wish The Kill Petition is more of a visual novel (e.g. Renpy style) media. I think it would really suit the mechanice and vibes.
Alas, I don't have enough resource nor skill for the graphics and illustrations. (And if anyone was going to send me 'Just generate with AI ✨😌' messages, I'm going to cut you off there because no. Just no)

hey, i'm sure you get stuff like this all the time, but i just recently discovered your renpy games, and holy shit, they were such a game changer for me! i kept trying out hypnosis stuff, but nothing put me in trance like i think therefore did. it's very exciting to be able to return to trance because i know what it feels like now, but even aside from my interest in it as a kink, it's done so much for my emotion/bodily awareness in general :) like wow, i can actually feel and influence my thoughts and emotions and mood changes inside my body?? wild lol. even just guided meditation never worked for me because i would get too caught up wondering if i was calm yet, and they always sort of took it for granted that i already know what my body and mind actually feel like. NOTHING else guided me into such an immensely calm and nice-feeling state like those games, AND i got to have a ton of fun while i was at it. my anxiety management skills have Skyrocketed since then! thank you for sharing the amazing work you do!!
This is really cool anon! My games are definitely not intended to be therapeutic but I think it makes sense you had this effect because I emphasize awareness and observation a lot when I do hypnosis :) Makes me feel proud and confident that this is a good direction to go for people like yourself who have a difficult time with trance because (many times) they don't really know what to look for or how to look. VN Anon here. Sorry if my ask caused up a stir. I genuinely wanted to compliment you on your efforts with your first VN and understand your inspirations behind it without coming off too strong.
I was so invested with how you approached Sonic and Knuckles' conflict -- it's a very solid adaptation of what tends to be the heart of their disagreements. I was a little caught off guard when I was trying to help Amy, so I did feel like I was thrown for a loop when I accidentally prioritised her external conflict over her internal conflict (I got a real good scolding from Sonic TwT). And Cream's event made me feel personally responsible and protective of her, and the background story that Vanilla wants the best for her but considers discouraging her dream of becoming a baker made me feel a bit seen lol. So I commend you for making me feel human emotions like I'm a part of the cast even as Sonic's buddy^^
The unique spin you added with the puns, the dogs, Knuckles' weeb deal was a fun break from expectations. And your thoughtfulness over avoiding narration fatigue is also something I appreciate heavily since I'm frankly not a vn player by trade. I was interested in seeing your spin on the cast since I tend to agree with your thoughts on the game cast.
Currently still on the meta section (the character swap is entertaining), but I like how Eggman is a genuine threat, an absolute control freak, and sees me as a tool! Guy's a hilarious bastard as always!

Thanks! Originally it was going to be a kinetic novel (linear VN with no choices) but due to my inexperience with RenPy at the time, I couldn't figure out how to make branching paths; every choice tended to loop back around, so I decided to work with that conceit instead.
OaS isn't fully non-kinetic, but it isn't fully kinetic either. Only one choice really matters, which determines whether you get the bad ending, and even that can be reversed if you know what to do. You might just have to suffer for it a little, is all.
Without getting too spoilery, each choice has a "bad" alternate route, which is implied to be Eggman veering things off-script. You can see this as early as the first choice, where he pops in with a jumpscare. Because there aren't a whole lot of choices, I tried to make each one weightier than usual, as well as fairly obvious.
The overall idea is that you'll evaluate each situation and choose the option that's best for the characters, rather than something you may personally want them to do. ex. Sonic says he's getting stir-crazy, so it would be kind of imposing your will on him to be like "no, stay home and read a book." The original plan was to tally each of the player's bad choices and have Sonic issue a warning if it looked like the player was on the path towards a bad ending, with each one slowly increasing the volume on the alarm. But, again, due to my inexperience with RenPy, I didn't know how to set up those variables. What I wound up doing instead was a more binary system where one choice is the "good" choice that progresses the VN like normal, whereas the other is the "bad" choice that loops you back around following a jumpscare.
There's nothing in the code that will punish you for making poor choices - you won't get any friendship points docked or anything like that - but since the game is about friendship, I was hoping Sonic's admonitions would be enough. The deterrent needs to be a little harsh in the absence of flagged variables.
(And that's before Vanilla puts the fear of God in you. :P)

Ty, I'm glad you're enjoying it. ^^ And no rush. I'm still working out the bugs in Antigravity.
Two recommendations, though: don't try to rollback or button-mash if you can. RenPy doesn't remember the last action you took while you're in the battle loop, so if you try to rollback during battle, it'll take you to the title screen.
I do want to see if disabling rollback will fix the issue, but that's for later. I'm currently working on making more maps.
