I've been slowly obsessing more and more about asoiaf fashion in the past 6 month, and really developing in details how it would look in different regions, classes, etc (the North being the one I have the most complete picture on). And I wanted to put some of this to paper instead of endlessly turning it in my head before I go to sleep. Usually when I costume design it is confined to a specific character, I've never done like worldbuilding fashion design, but idk asoiaf really gets me going.
So here's the North ! I could have kept going and added more stuff, but if I try to spew all the shit that's in my head I'm never gonna finish this x) So I focused mostly on great houses/nobles fashion for this. Maybe I'll do a sheet for smallfolk or practical clothing like battle armour after I'm done with all the kindoms. I already have to continue the anti AI quest...
More asoiaf fashion
#my pinterest inspo board for this has grown sooo absurdly large - like nearly a thousand pics with 20 subfolders and so lol#I think I've seen every medieval/renaissance fashion pic on the website#like now I often recognize specific pinterest inspos on other people's asoiaf art lmao#asoiaf#a song of ice and fire#asoiaf fashion#valyrianscrolls#the north#house stark#fanart#my art#bear with me tho like I said I've never done worldbuilding costume design and I'm certainly not an expert in historical clothing#this is just for fun

ONCE UPON A TIME, THERE WAS A KNIGHT...
the visual inspiration for this was a combination of Frederic William Burton's Meeting on the Turret Stairs and also Bernardo Cavallino's The vision of St. Dominic receiving the Rosary from the Virgin
this was supposed to be just a one off illustration to get the thoughts out of my system, but then I started thinking about medieval politics and warfare and plagues and a castle and home as both a place of refuge, a prison, and a tomb, so perhaps they will end up as ex voto characters as well.
you may say, hey! that rosary looks like it has too many beads! it's a fifteen decade rosary, probably. dominicans are really into marian devotions. it works out.
also. spiral style stair cases. oh boy. it was that unexpectedly more difficult than I originally thought it would be to draw. the more I think about it, the less I understand them, even though I had a million photos of the stairs in front of me while I was drawing it.
⭐ I have a tip jar (ko-fi)!
⭐ and other places I’m at! bsky / pixiv / pillowfort /cohost / cara.app
#the economy and my bank account are in shambles and i ended up stress drawing this whole thing in one go#its so many lines. the next time i draw this. because i will be revisiting this composition. i want to use a different inking brush#i think. but the next time i draw this it will be with solid blacks on the stair case steps i think#hey here's a fun fact for those of you who aren't catholic. did you know that kissing the ring of the pope/a cardinal/etc#grants you an indulgence. cardinals also used to kiss the pope on the mouth. also foot and hand iirc. anyway#there are no cardinals in this drawing but im saying if you write medieval/renaissance smut about men of the cloth#you can really amp up the friction between holy and seductive with a lot of the (gestures vaguely) that.#actually another fun fact about cardinals. their fun sun hat (it's called a galero) has some fucking weird as hell fever dream (literally)#origin lore. so if seductive isn't your thing. the horror of a thing that you wear is also extremely fun#esp when you get into medieval gender performances of clothes and how they define a person etc#generic medieval tag#original tag

Sewing mid-16th century Venetian dress in doll scale - Part 2
I mentioned in the first post that I was meaning to do sleeves for the dress, but lost my patience after failing at it, so I decided to let it go for now. Well, for now has gone and I finally did it after failing couple of more times. I also made a new chemise for the doll (which I also made a free pattern for), since I wasn't happy with the first one and I'm much happier with the second attempt. So without further ado, here's the Venetian Renaissance doll finally finished.
First the new chemise.

Then the new chemise with the dress.
And finally the whole dress!
After all the struggle I'm quite happy how the sleeves turned out!

Ms. Codex 109 is a late 16th century Germany manuscript of the treatise "Feuer Buech," on munitions and explosive devices. It includes many illustrations of the various devices and their uses, and also features illustrations of men in colorful apparel. And the infamous Rocket Cat!

How do you think our babies (Denmark, Norway and Sweden) looked during Kalmar times? I always imagine Denmark growing up a bit during it because it's kind of a pinnacle of power for him!
I already showed what Sweden would have looked like, but sure! I think your image of Den makes a lot of sense.
In my personal headcanons, I think Norway was practically bedridden at the beginning of the union since the plague hit him especially hard. Due to his poor health, he depended on other people to do even the most basic tasks, which must have driven him insane. His poor health, being stuck indoors (leading to a lack of contacts and opportunities) and basically the absence of freedom sealed his fate for the next centuries going forward. Maybe the few times he genuinely rebelled and ran away were especially dangerous due to his condition, but he must have had so much built-up frustration about many things at the time.
Sweden came and went as he pleased, running away a lot when he got frustrated or upset. Sweden's unwillingness to cooperate drove Denmark nuts, so they argued a lot. I feel like Den had genuinely good intentions, trying to make this union they were forced into work. But he was also more experienced than the rest of his family, having multiple alliances to take care of, so he ended up taking the leadership role in most situations. So I don't think Denmark getting upset about Norway and Sweden running around with growing pains and failing to see the bigger picture is completely unjustifiable...
There's just too much to get into, so this is briefly a general picture of how I see the union. They were all physically young, and thus immature and stupid, so it's not surprising at all that the union didn't really work out at any point.
#hws denmark#hws sweden#hws norway#headcanons#my art#feels stupid posting swe twice but eh#trying to make them more youthful than their modern counterparts was HARD#my thought process being something like#-> den trying to fit in with his european allies and their renaissance fashion#-> swe's gear being thrown together last minute from basic everyday work clothes before running away once again to god knows where#-> nor being clearly sick and weak but still trying to upkeep his status for his own sake

One thing I enjoy about these pet portraits is that its unclear whether or not there's supposed to be a human body in there or if it's just a cat poking its head through a dress.

ascanio sforza & juan borgia
you ever think about how ascanio was a suspect in juan’s death. he was doing everything, schemes, sponsoring the arts, gambling, non stop political machinations, and also murder suspect! wow.
#Ascanio’s dynamic with each of the Borgia children is honestly so funny to me. Juan is the funniest tho#CHRIST you would not believe how many times I redrew Juan’s clothes before drawing a generic shirt#Italian Renaissance tag

Silk doublet and Pluderhosen, Northern Germany, ca. 1580/90.
Another personal favourite of mine: a pair of late 16th century Pluderhosen combined with a doublet from the same time. While both garments were most likely made by a tailor from the Hanseatic city of Einbeck, they were not meant to be worn together and were just placed like this by the museum for exhibition. While doublet and breeches look beautiful, they were heavily altered during the 19th and 20th century; the doublet´s silk sleeves as well as the red silk lining of the Pluderhosen are later additions and not a genuine 16th century feature.
The front of the doublet is slightly padded to form a so-called "peascod-belly", imitating 16th century breastplates. The buttons are just for decoration, the doublet originally closed with hooks and eyes. The most prominent feature of the Pluderhosen is the massive codpiece, which is lavishly decorated.
